Explico Algunas Cosas
John Gourlay
Orchestra
Composed 2005
This short orchestral piece takes its title from the poem of the same name by the Peruvian
poet Pablo Neruda. In the ‘thirties Neruda spent some time in Spain and in “I’m Explaining
A Few Things” he expressed his reaction to the horrors of the civil war in which he lost
many friends. The music reflects the poem’s form which first gently describes the beauty
of Spain, but ends by declaiming “Come and see the blood in the streets!”
The piece was written for Fife Youth Orchestra and their conductor, Graeme Wilson
who gave it five performances in Lochgelly, Dunfermline, St. Andrews, Edinburgh
and Glasgow during their 2005-2006 season.
