Secondly, there is an economic benefit. It is more likely to be a cost-efficient process when
people take more responsibility for assessing their own needs, planning and choosing
services to meet those needs. It is even more likely to save money when they develop the
skills to solve problems and take decisions about the bigger issues in their lives such as
where to live, who to live with, changing a service that no longer suits.
Thirdly, people will be less dependent on services. People who develop leadership skills of
assertiveness and problem-solving, motivation and delegation, are likely to use services as a
means to leading the life they want to live, instead of becoming dependent on them.
