3. AUGUST WILHELM MARTIN KOHLHOFF was born 4 Apr. 1844 in Rütznow. He<br />

married ALBERTINE AUGUSTE THERESA GOETSCH, daughter of Daniel Friederich Goetsch,<br />

on 6 March 1868 in Rütznow. (14A) At the time of marriage his occupation was listed as a Ackernecht (a<br />

plowboy)<br />

August and Albertine immigrated from Hamburg, Germany to New York, N.Y. arriving on 9 Apr 1868.<br />

The 1880 U.S. Census shows that he and his family lived in Liberty Grove, Door County, Wisconsin;<br />

listing his occupation as a Farmer. (14) In 1882 the moved to what was then the Dakota Territory on a<br />

homestead near Groton. On 1 Jun. 1889he received a Land Patent (homestead) (15) and on 1 Nov. 1897<br />

he received another Land Patent (Timber Culture)(16) both of 160 acres, in Brown County, South Dakota .<br />

The 1900 U.S. Census shows he and his family lived in Hanson, Brown County, SD. (17) The 1910 U.S.<br />

Census has him and his family living in Aberdeen, Brown County, SD.(18) The 1920 U.S. Census has him<br />

and his family still living in Aberdeen, SD. (18A) He died 13 Sep. 1925 in Aberdeen, SD due to aortic<br />

insufficiency. He was buried at the East Randell Cemetery, Aberdeen, SD.(19) His obituary appeared in<br />

the American Evening News, Aberdeen, SD, 14 Sep 1925: (20)<br />

August Kohlhoff, 119 Sixth Avenue southwest, a prominent retired farmer, passes away Sunday morning at a<br />

local hospital at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 9 days following an illness of short duration.<br />

On Wednesday Mr. Kohlhoff was taken suddenly ill with strangulated hernia and was at one taken to the hospital<br />

and operated on but the shock proved too much and the end came suddenly Sunday morning about 2 o’clock.<br />

The Deceased was born in Greifenberg, Germany, on April 4, 1844. He was united in marriage to Albertina<br />

Goetsch, March 6, 1868, and they soon thereafter came to America to seek their fortune. They<br />

first resided in Wisconsin and lived there for fifteen years, after which they came to South Dakota, settling on a<br />

homestead southwest of Groton in March 1882<br />

In 1909 he retired from farming activities and moved to Aberdeen. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran<br />

church. He leaves to mourn hi death, his widow, ten children and eleven grandchildren. His only brother preceded<br />

him in death four years ago.<br />

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday afternoon at the Zion Lutheran church at 2 o’clock, Rev.<br />

Newall officiating. There will be a short prayer service at the house for the family at 1:30 o’clock P.M. Burial will<br />

be made in East Randell township, the former home of the deceased.”<br />

Another obituary was also issued in 1925. I do not have the exact date nor the name of the paper (21)<br />

AUGUST KOHLHOFF<br />

Aged Pioneer who formerly lived near Stratford died after short Illness<br />

Word came to Kohlhoff Brothers and sister Emma Wednesday of last week that their father, August Kohlhoff of<br />

Aberdeen, as seriously ill. They immediately went to Aberdeen where they found their father in critical condition.<br />

He was taken to the hospital and operated on but was unable to rally and passes away early Sunday morning.<br />

Mr. Kohlhoff was born in Greifenberg, Germany, on April 4, 1844, being 81 years, 5 months and 9 days of age at<br />

time of his death. He was married to Albertine Goetsch, March 6, 1868, and soon thereafter the young couple came<br />

to America and settled in Wisconsin. After 16 year residence in Wisconsin they moved to South Dakota locating<br />

five and one-half miles east of Stratford, where they lived for a period of 18 years.<br />

The old homestead was disposed of to Chas. . Schlichting and Mr. Kohlhoff moved to a farm, two and one-half<br />

miles southeast of Butler, were he lived for 9 years, selling his place at that time to Mr. Brandemuhl, who formerly<br />

lived near Groton. From Butler he again moved to Aberdeen, which was his home when death claimed him.<br />

Mr. Kohlhoff was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and according to the testimony of old friends and<br />

neighbors, a man of unquestioned honor and integrity.<br />

His only brother died four years ago. Besides his widow, he leaves to mourn his loss, ten children and eleven<br />

grand-children. The children are: Ferdinand, John, Emma, and Otto of Stratford, Joe and Frank of Leola, S.D., Mrs.<br />

C. G. Buchele of Wessisngton, and Minnie, Lydia and Laura of Aberdeen.<br />

The funeral service were held Wednesday, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, at 2 o'clock, p.m., Rev.<br />

Musall officiating. Interment was made in East Rondell cemetery.<br />

a. EMMA KOHLHOFF was born Jan. 1869 in Ephraim, Door County, Wisconsin (WI).<br />

(22) She accompanied her parents when they moved to Dakota Territory in 1882. In 1900 she was a<br />

dressmaker in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (22) On 27 May 1912 she was issued a land patent for 80 acres<br />

at Lemmon, SD, (23) and also on 27 May 1912 she received another patent for an additional 160 acres (24).<br />

The 1930 U.S. Census shows her living in Stratford, Brown County, SD. (25) She died at St. Luke’s<br />

Hospital, Aberdeen, Brown County, SD on 23 Nov 1949. (26) The Aberdeen American News, Aberdeen,<br />

SD, 25 Nov. 1949 contained her obituary: (26)<br />

"Stratford Woman Dies At Hospital<br />

Miss Emma Kohlhoff, Stratford, died at St. Luke’s hospital Wednesday afternoon. Funeral services will be held<br />

at the Presbyterian church at Stratford at 2 p. m. Saturday with the Rev. George Clarke officiating. Burial will be in<br />

Riverside Memorial park cemetery.<br />

Miss Kohlhoff was born at Ephraim, Wis. She came to Dakota territory with here parents in 1882, living with<br />

them on their homestead near Groton, where she grew to young womanhood. In her profession as a seamstress and<br />

designer she spent several years in Minneapolis, later coming back to South Dakota to make her home with<br />

her brothers, Otto, of Stratford, and Frank, of Leola. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and had been<br />

treasurer of the church at Stratford. She was also a member of tech OES.<br />

Survivors besides the two brothers with whom she made her home are four sisters, Mrs. C. G. Buchele, De Smet,<br />

and Minnie, Lydia, and Laura Kohlhoff, all of Aberdeen."<br />

b. FERDENAND KOHLHOFF was born 1871 in Ephraim, Door County, Wisconsin.<br />

The spelling of given name is based on entry on the 1880 U.S. Census, Liberty Grove, Door County,<br />

Wisconsin (14). Later documents lists his given name as Ferdinand. The 1900 U.S. Census has his<br />

residence in Hanson, Brown County, SD(17), and 1930 U.S. Census as being in Stratford, Brown County,<br />

SD.(27) He is listed as HEAD of the household. Katherine M. Kohlhoff, Age 12, living in the<br />

household, is listed as his Niece. He died 14 May 1948 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota<br />

(MN). (28) His obituary appeared in the Aberdeen American News, Aberdeen, SD: (28)<br />

"F. A. Kohlhoff, Stratford, Dies.<br />

Ferdinand A. Kohlhoff, Stratford, died in Minneapolis Saturday following a long illness. Funeral services will be<br />

held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian church in Stratford. Burial Will be in Riverside Memorial Park<br />

Cemetery.<br />

Mr. Kohlhoff was born in Ephraim, Wis., and came with his parents and family to Stratford in 1882, where he<br />

grew to manhood. He operated an implement and hardware business in Stratford until the time of his retirement.<br />

Survivors are five sisters, Emma Kohlhoff, Stratford: Mrs. Alvina Buchele, Erwin; and Minnie, Laura and Lydia<br />

Kohlhoff, all of Aberdeen: and two brothers, Otto, Stratford ; and Frank Leola.<br />

The body will arrive in Aberdeen early Sunday and will lie in state at the Gates Funereal home until shortly before<br />

the time of services."<br />

c. GUSTAV KOHLHOFF was born 1873 in Ephraim, Door County, WI. (14) He was<br />

also known as Joseph and Joe Kohlhoff. 1880 US Census has him living in Liberty Grove Twp, Door<br />

County, WI; 1900 US Census living in Hanson, Brown County, SD with the name of JOSEPH<br />

KOHLHOFF. (17) In 1932 he was a resident of Leola, McPherson County, SD. He died 7 Jan 1946 at<br />

St. John’s Hospital, Leola, SD. His obituary appeared in the Aberdeen American News, 8 Jan 1946: (29)<br />

Kohlhoff Funeral Here Wednesday<br />

Joseph F. Kohlhoff of Leola died Monday at St. Luke's hospital after a lingering illness.<br />

A resident of South Dakota since the early '80s' he was an early-day school teacher and for many hears had been<br />

in the implement business in Leola with his brother, Frank. Mr. Kohlhoff was born in Ephriam, Wis., and came to<br />

this state with his parents while a small boy. He attended rural schools, Eastern normal and 'South Dakota State<br />

college, teaching for sever years in rural schools of Brown county.<br />

Later he became a grain buyer at Ferney, Groton and Stratford before entering business at Leola.<br />

Survivors include the following brothers and sisters: Frank Kohlhoff of Leola, Ferdinand, Otto and Emma<br />

Kohlhoff of Stratford: Mrs. C. G. Buchele of Erwin and Misses Minnie, Lydia and Laura Kohlhoff of Aberdeen, and<br />

several nieces and nephews. Funeral services, in charge of the Schuhardt parlors in Leola, will be at the Gates<br />

funeral home in Aberdeen Wednesday at 2:30 p. m. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Cemetery".<br />

d. JOHANNES KOHLHOFF was born in February 1873 in Ephraim, Door County, WI.<br />

The 1800 US Census shows he was living in Liberty Grove, Door County, WI;(14) the 1900 US Census<br />

shows he was living in Hanson, Brown County, SD.(17) He anglicized his first name from Johannes to<br />

John. He married ANNA PULFREY in 1909 in Aberdeen, SD. (30) He died 10 Aug 10 August 1942<br />

due to pneumonia and complications at the St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen, SD. His obituary (30) appeared<br />

in the Aberdeen American News, 11 August 1942:<br />

John Kohlhoff, 60, Dies At Hospital<br />

John F. Kohlhoff, 60, Stratford farmer, died Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's hospital of pneumonia and<br />

complications.<br />

He was born at Ephraim, Wis., and came to the Stratford vicinity when a child. He farmed five miles east of that<br />

town. He was married to Mrs. Anna Pulfrey at Aberdeen.<br />

Surviving besides his widow are a daughter, Katherine Kohlhoff: a stepson, Ralph Pulfrey: four brothers,<br />

Ferdinand of Stratford, Joe of Leola, Otto of Stratford and Frank of Leola: and four sisters, Emma of Stratford,<br />

Minnie and Lydia of Aberdeen, and Mrs. Alvina Buchele, Erwin, S.D.<br />

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian church at Stratford with Rev. Arthur<br />

Alack officiating. Burial will be in East Rondell cemetery."<br />

e. ALVIENE KOHLHOFF was born 1877 in Wisconsin. The 1800 US Census shows she<br />

was living in Liberty Grove, WI, (14) the 1900 US Census in Minneapolis, MN (31) with an occupation of<br />

Dress Maker. In July 1917 she married C. G. Buchele in Broadway, SD. (20) The Obit of August<br />

Kohlhoff, her father’s lists all of his living children. His daughters are listed as Emma, Minnie, Lydia,<br />

Laura and one Mrs. C.G. Buechele. The only other daughter was Alviene and therefore it falls that<br />

Alviene is Mrs. C.G. Buechele. Also a newspaper article states that Mrs. C. G. Buchele , with her four<br />

children, of Butler, is here for a visit with her brothers, Kohlhoff brothers, and sister, Miss Emma<br />

Kohlhoff." (32), and another newspaper article states in part: “Ferdinand and Otto Kohlhoff,<br />

accompanied by their sister, Miss Minnie Kohlhoff, were among those taking the train for Aberdeen at<br />

this place on Sunday morning going up to escort that far on the way home their little nephews, Master<br />

Kermitt and Walter Buchele, sons of register of deeds and Mrs. Buchele of Webster, Day county.”(33)<br />

They lived in Bellingham, Erwin and De Smet, SD.<br />

f. MENNA KOHLHOFF was born 16 July 1879 in Sturgeon Bay, Door County,<br />

Wisconsin. (34) She was also know as MINNIE KOHLHOFF. The 1880 US Census shows her as<br />

residing in Liberty Grove, WI(14). The 3 March 1916 edition of the Aberdeen Daily American shows that<br />

she was then living in Nebraska.(35)1<br />

"Webster Reporter and Farmer<br />

Miss Minnie Kohlhoff, who is now a resident of Nebraska, but formerly lived in Day county and was deputy in the<br />

register of deeds office under Chas. Buechele, stopped off in Webster Monday between trains to call on friends. She<br />

was on her way to visit relatives in Aberdeen."<br />

The 1920 US Census shows that she had moved back to Aberdeen, SD. (18A) She died in July 1964. Her<br />

obituary appeared in the Aberdeen American News, 26 July 1964 (36):<br />

Kohlhoff Rite Announced<br />

"SERVICES for Minnie Luella Kohlhoff, 85, of 119 6th Ave. S.W., will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First<br />

Methodist Church with Dr. J. Harley Thompson officiating.<br />

Burial will be in the Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery.<br />

Friends may call at the Gates Funeral Home Sunday afternoon and until noon Monday. The casket will not be<br />

opened after the service.<br />

Miss Kohlhoff was born July 16, 1879 at Sturgeon Bay, Wis. and came with her family to the Groton area as a<br />

small child. She had been a resident of Aberdeen for over 50 years. She worked as a bookkeeper until her<br />

retirement. She never married. She was a member of the Minerva Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and of<br />

the Aberdeen Garden Club.<br />

Survivors include a sister, Miss Laura Kohlhoff, Aberdeen; one brother, Frank, Leola, and number of nieces and<br />

nephews."<br />

g. LETTA KOHLHOFF was born 21 March 1882 in Wisconsin. (17) Year of birth based on<br />

age of 10 at time of census. While her obituary indicates that she was born in Groton, SD, the 1900 US<br />

Census shows she was born in Wisconsin (17). The International Genealogical Index (IGI) lists her name<br />

as LIDIA BERTHA WILHELMINA KOHLHOFF. (38) The US Censuses shows that in 1900 (17) she<br />

lived in Hanson, SD, 1910 she lived in Aberdeen, SD,(18) 1920 she lived in Aberdeen, SD. (18A) She was<br />

employed in 1914 as a stenographer in Stratford, SD, city auditor’s office per an article in the Aberdeen<br />

Daily News, 11 February 1914. (39) She also lived in Leola, SD as indicated in a news article in the<br />

Aberdeen Daily News, 11 May 1909:<br />

"The Aberdeen Weekly News, Tuesday, May 11, 1909 (40)<br />

Miss Lydia Kohlhoff, former of this city will return from Leola where she has been with the Scott Land company, and will<br />

resume her position in the office of N. . Lundgren, of the Canadian Pacific company."<br />

“The Aberdeen Daily American, February 11, 1914 (41)<br />

"F. A. Kohlhoff of Stratford, who is engaged in the hardware business there, spent yesterday in the city visiting his sister, Miss<br />

Lydia Kohlhoff, stenographer in the city auditor’s office."<br />

In a letter to Mrs. Elizabeth Moll on 8 February 1951,(42) while living at the old homestead at 119 6 th Ave, SW,<br />

Aberdeen, SD, she wrote:<br />

“Now I am going to tell you some more bad news: Otto passed away on the 9 th day of October, 1950. He<br />

was ill only a few days. As soon as he became ill he was taken to the hospital in Aberdeen. We gave him every<br />

care and attention, and the doctor assured us that he was getting better, but he passed away<br />

very suddenly on evening. It was a very great shock to us. We can hardly reconcile us to the loss. Now my brother<br />

who were here at Stratford have all passed away, and Emma is gone too. So there is no one left at Stratford to take<br />

care of the hardware store. We have decided to see the stock of merchandise in the store and then the buildings and<br />

house too. We will take care of the farming interests for this season.”<br />

The hardware store she was referring to was the KOHLHOFF BROTHERS Hardware – Farm Machinery<br />

– Trucks, in Stratford, SD.<br />

She was the Second Vice President of the Brown County Territorial Pioneers Association from 1962 to<br />

1963<br />

Her nephew, Bob Kohlhoff of Leola, SD wrote that she died 6 November 1962 of a heart attack while out<br />

walking.(43) Her obituary appeared in the Aberdeen American News, 7 November 1962: (44)<br />

"Service Set For Retired City Auditor<br />

SERVICES for Miss Lydia Kolhoff, 82, of 119 6th Ave. S.E., will be held 2 P.m. Saturday at the First Methodist<br />

Church with the Rev. J. Harley Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery.<br />

Friends may call Friday at the Gates Funeral Home.<br />

Miss Kohlhoff was born in Groton where she grew to womanhood. In 1912 she came to Aberdeen and later<br />

graduated from Northern State Teachers College. She was appointed deputy city auditor of Aberdeen and later was<br />

named city auditor. She held that position for over 45 years. After her retirement, she became active in politics and<br />

was secretary of the Brown County Republican Committee. Miss Kohlhoff never married.<br />

She was a member of the First Methodist Church, Wesley Guild, Business and Professional Women’s Club,<br />

Literary Club and Brown County Pioneers.<br />

The Aberdeen City Commission Wednesday, in recognition of the years of service performed for the city by Miss<br />

Kohlhoff, endorsed a resolution of condolence and sympathy to be extended to her survivors. Survivors include one<br />

other, Frank Kohlhoff, Leola; Two sisters, Miss Laura and Miss Minnie Kohlhoff. both of Aberdeen; and a<br />

number of nieces and nephews.<br />

Miss Kohlhoff was dead on arrival Tuesday evening at St. Luke's Hospital after being taken there by city<br />

ambulance from an Aberdeen cafe."<br />

h. OTTO KOHLHOFF was born 9 May 1884 in Groton, Brown County, SD.(45) The 1900<br />

US Census show residence in Hanson, Brown County, SD; (17) the 1930 US Census in Stratford, Brown<br />

County, SD (25). An article in the Aberdeen Sunday News, 16 Apr 1916 (46) had an article regarding the<br />

Kohlhoff Brothers Hardware store:<br />

“Kohlhoff Brothers<br />

Otto, F. A. and J. F. Kohlhoff, proprietors of Kohlhoff Brothers general hardware and farm implement business,<br />

are three more pioneers of the town who were on the job from the first. They put up their building during the winter<br />

of 1906-1907 completing it in March of the latter year when they opened their store with a full line of hardware and<br />

farm machinery. In 1909 they added line of automobiles to their business, and this year have increased the scope of<br />

their business by the addition of a line of gas tractors.<br />

This firm is handling the only line of automobiles in the town, the Ford, Buick and Oakland cars.<br />

Their spring invoice of stock showed $9,000."<br />

This was the business that Lydia (Letta) referred to above.<br />

Otto died 9 October 1950 in Aberdeen, SD. His obituary was in the Aberdeen American News, Page 9,<br />

10 October 1950 (47) and the Aberdeen American News, Page 10, 12 October 1950. (48)<br />

"Otto Kohlhoff of Stratford Dies<br />

Otto Kohlhoff, Stratford, died at St. Luke's hospital Monday night after a short illness. Funeral services will be<br />

held at 2 p. m. Thursday at the Presbyterian church in Stratford. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial park<br />

cemetery.<br />

Mr. Kohlhoff was born at Groton. He had been a hardware dealer in Stratford for many years. He was a member<br />

of the Presbyterian church.<br />

Survivors are four sisters: Mrs. C. G. Buchele, De Smet; and Minnie, Lydia, and Laura, all of Aberdeen; and a<br />

brother, Frank, of Leola.<br />

The Gates Funeral home is in charge of arrangements."<br />

"Kohlhoff Funeral Rites Conducted<br />

Funeral services for Otto Kohlhoff, Stratford, who died at St. Luke's hospital Monday, were held at the<br />

Presbyterian church at Stratford Thursday afternoon. Burial was in Riverside Memorial park cemetery.<br />

Music was by a male quartet consisting of William Baggett, Dale Dayton, B. Dayton and Leslie Julson. Marlene<br />

McNeill was pianist and Mrs. Russell Serdahl was in charge of music. Ed Solberg and Russell Sosrdahl were<br />

ushers.<br />

Pall bearers were Clayton Baker, Earl Saunders, Adolph Dobberpuhl, Otis Christian, Lloyd Face and Bill<br />

Schwartz.<br />

Mr. Kohlhoff was the last member of the Kohlhoff Bros. Implement firm which had been in business since the<br />

establishment of the city of Stratford. He was born near Groton, the son of a pioneer family in Brown county. Mr.<br />

Kohlhoff attended rural schools in Brown county and finished his education in Aberdeen. He had lived in Brown<br />

county continuously with the exception of a few years in Day county.<br />

Active in affairs of the town, church and school, Mr. Kohlhoff was treasurer of the school district at the time of<br />

his death.<br />

Survivors are a brother, Frank of Leola; and four sisters, Mrs. C. G. Buchele, De Smet; and Minnie, Laura and<br />

Lydia, all of Aberdeen.<br />

The Gates Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.<br />

i. FRANK NATHANIEL KOHLHOFF was born 23 February 1886 in Ferney, SD. (49) US<br />

Census for 1900 shows his residence as being in Hanson, Brown County, SD; the 1930 US Census has his<br />

residence in Leola, McPherson County, SD. (50) He married MARTHA AMELIA SCHMIDT in<br />

Brownton, MN. (51) He was in business with his brothers who were Franchise Dealers for International<br />

Harvester Implements. (52) He died in April 1976 in Leola, McPherson, SD. (53)<br />

The following is an article that appears in the Leola, McPherson County, SD Centennial Book<br />

1864-1964 (52)<br />

“Frank N. Kohlhoff was born at Ferney, SD, in 1886. His parents were August and Albertina (Goetsch)<br />

Kohlhoff. Frank was united in marriage with Martha A. Schmidt. in 1909. Martha was born in 1886 to August and<br />

Augustina (Aste) Schmidt of Brownton.<br />

The Kohlhoffs moved to Leola from Nevada, IA in 1918. Frank and his brother Joe were franchised dealers for<br />

International Harvester Implements, having purchased the business March 19, 1918, which he operated until 1951.<br />

Mr. and Mrs. Kohlhoff were most active in community affairs. Frank served on the city council, school board, the<br />

75th anniversary committee was a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge. He and his wife were members of the Order of<br />

the Eastern Star and the Methodist Church. Mrs. Kohlhoff was a member of W.S.C.S. and the Disco Club.<br />

Martha died in 1957, Frank, in 1976. Frank and Martha were the parents five children:<br />

Mrs. P. H. Frank Kohlhoff, 71, Leola, died at her residence unexpectedly Wed. evening. Services are to be held<br />

at 2 p. m. Saturday at the Leola Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Schmierere officiating. Burial will be in<br />

Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Aberdeen.<br />

Martha Amelia Schmidt was born March 19, 1886 at Brownton, Minn., and grew to womanhood there. She<br />

moved to Butler, S.D. in 1907, returning to Brownton in 1909 where she was married to Frank N. Kohlhoff on June<br />

9. Their first home was established at Butler.<br />

Later they lived at Onaka, and in Iowa before going to Leola in 1918, where they have since resided. She was a<br />

member of the Leola Methodist Church and the Womans (sic) Society of that church; a charter member of the Disco<br />

Club and a member of the Leola chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.<br />

Survivors include her husband; one son, Ivan N (Bob) Kohlhoff, Leola; four daughters, Vera V. Kohlhoff,<br />

Chicago Heights, Ill; Mrs. David Flittie (Ruth), of Brookings; Mrs. Oskar (Grace) Cieseke, Wantagh, N.Y., and Mrs.<br />

Gene (Doris) Redman, San Mateo, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and seven brothers, Albert Schmidt, Long Beach, Calif.;<br />

Otto Schmidt, Selma, Calif.; Herman Schmidt, Butler; Henry Schmidt, Brownton; and August, Reinhardt and Arthur<br />

Schmidt, all of St Paul, Minn.<br />

She was a sister in law of the Misses Lydia, Minnie and Laura Kohlhoff of Aberdeen."<br />

Vera V. Kohlhoff was born May 10, 1910 to Frank and Martha (Schmidt) Kohlhoff at Butler. She attended and<br />

graduated from Leola High School and then attended south Dakota State College in Brookings, receiving a...<br />

It was part of a letter from Vera Kohlhoff to Mrs. Velera Kohlhoff Benz, wife of Ralph Benz,<br />

that listed some of the descendants of Daniel Kohlhoff and that eventually enabled me to tie the<br />

various branches of his family.<br />

attended S.D. State college I the 1930s. She married DAVID R. FLITTE in McPherson County, SD, on<br />

2 June 1943.(58) after which they moved to Brookings, SD, and operated a sales barn and dairy farming.<br />

Ruth Kay Kohlhoff was born Jan 9, 1914 in Nevada, Iowa. She moved with her family to Leola at the age of<br />

four. Her father operated an implement business there. She graduated from Leola High School in 1931 and<br />

attended South Dakota State College. She worked for a time in Brookings and Huron. She married David R. Flittie<br />

in 1845 at Leola. They made their home in Brookings where they operated the sales barn and also had a dairy farm.<br />

Mr. Flittie died in 1957 and she continued to manage the dairy farm for several years.<br />

Survivors include her father, Frank N. Kohlhoff, Leola; two sons, Bruce D of Brookings and Roger G. of Sioux<br />

Falls, one brother I. N. (Bob) Kohlhoff, Leola; three sisters, Vera Kohlhoff, Leola, Mrs. Oskar (Grace) Geiseke,<br />

Wilson Conn., and Mrs. Doris Redmon of San Jose, Calif. and two grandchildren.<br />

She was preceded in death by her mother and her husband.”<br />

<strong>IV</strong>AN N. (Bob) Kohlhoff, 61, Leola rancher, died Sunday, Feb. 12, of an apparent heart attack at Great Bend<br />

Park, near Alpine, Texas, where he had been vacationing.<br />

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. at the United Methodist Church in Leola with the<br />

Rev. Gideon Eberhardt officiating.<br />

Cremation will take place Wednesday at Sioux Falls and committal services for the remains will be held at<br />

Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in the spring.<br />

The Gates-Vik Funeral Homer is in charge of arrangements.<br />

Mr. Kohlhoff was born March 2, 1916, at Nevada, Iowa. He moved with his family to Leola in 1918 and has<br />

resided there since. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Air Force. He married Elsie Bentley<br />

July 6, 1943, at Boise, Idaho.<br />

He was a past master of the Leola Masonic Blue Lodge No. 154 and was a member of the Frederick Masonic<br />

Lodge, Tuscan No 81. He was also a member of the Aberdeen Elks Lodge, was a past director of the South<br />

Dakota Stock Growers Assn., was a co-chairman of the South Dakota Land Owners Sportsmans (sic) Council, a<br />

charter member of the South Dakota Production Records Assn., and various other cattle associations.<br />

Survivors include his widow, one son, Jeff, of Leola; two daughters, Kristine Kohlhoff, Sioux Falls; and<br />

Kathleen Warnick, Huron; three sisters, Miss Vera Kohlhoff, Leola; Mrs. Grace Giesecke, Wilson, Con.; and Mrs.<br />

Doris Redmon, San Jose; California and three grandchildren.<br />

ELSIE M. BENTLEY, wife of Ivan (Bob) Kohlhoff, was born 10 July 1920 and died 3<br />

LAURA Kohlhoff, 79, a longtime Aberdeen resident, died Thursday evening at Bethesda Nursing Home in<br />

Webster. Services will be at 4 p. m. Saturday at the Gates Funeral Home with Dr. F. G. Tannehill of the First<br />

Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery.<br />

Miss Kohlhoff was born near Ferney on Feb. 18, 1888. She came to Aberdeen as a young woman and had<br />

resided here until entering the Bethesda home 2 1/2 years ago. She was employed as a secretary in a number of<br />

local business offices. She never married She was a member of the First Methodist Church and Minerva Chapter of<br />

the Eastern Star.<br />

Survivors include a brother, Frank Kohlhoff, Leola; and a number of nieces and nephews. A number of brothers<br />

and sisters preceded her in death.<br />

Friends may call at the Gates Funeral Home beginning Friday evening."<br />
