THE VOICE
June 2012
Happy Father’s Day
By Rabbi Howard Cove
rabbicove@kolemet.org
A number of years ago I heard a story about the
chaplain of Oral Roberts University, Bob Stamps. One
night Bob and his wife decided to go out for dinner.
They hired a babysitter to take care of their 2 little
children. The babysitter got distracted and the children
were in another part of the house for quite a while. The
boy, Peter Andrew, went into his parents’ bathroom,
took his father’s electric razor, and shaved a straight
line down the center of his head – like a landing strip at
an airport.
When the father returned home that evening and saw
his son, he was upset. He shouted; “Peter Andrew, I told
you never to play with my shaver! You are going to get a
spanking that you will never forget!”
Before he could lay a hand on his son, however, the boy
cried out “Have you seen my sister yet?” The father’s
heart sank as he went into his four year old daughter’s
room. He looked at her and almost fainted because she
had absolutely no hair on her head! The brother had
used the razor on his sister first.
The father grabbed his son and shouted “Peter Andrew
you will never forget the punishment you are going to
get!” However, before he could lay a hand on the child,
Peter Andrew looked up at his father, with tears
streaming down his face, and said “But Dad, we were
only trying to look like you (Dad is bald).”
Six-year-old Peter Andrew spoke a truth we fathers should
remember that our children watch us, look up to us, and
sometimes want to look like us.
Dr. Seymour Diamond, while doing research on children’s
relationships to their fathers, stated “I found that today’s
American father, on the average, gives undivided attention
to his children less than one minute a day, and gives them
partial attention for an additional 20 minutes while he
otherwise engaged watching television, working on a
project, or reading a paper.” Even though we say we love
our children, with regard to time allocation, how many of
us can say our children are a priority?
Most of us are familiar with the 2 nd paragraph of the
Shema – the V’ahavta. We translate this verse from the
Book of Deuteronomy (6:6) as “you shall teach your
children diligently and shall speak of them (the
commandments) when you sit in your house, when you
walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise
up.”
Change one word and see if there is a teaching we could
take to heart. Instead of saying, “you shall speak of
them” referring to the commandments, read it as “you
shall teach your children diligently and shall speak to
them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the
way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”
A father is a necessary and crucially important presence
in the lives of our children. We and our children deserve
the opportunity to develop positive, constructive, and
nurturing relationships. We must invest the time. When
we look back on our lives years from now, we won’t
regret not having worked longer hours. What we will
regret is not having spent enough time with our
children. Let us enjoy time hanging around our children
as much as we can. Let’s put them at the top of the list,
today and every day.
From Carrie
By Carrie Shames Walinsky
Kol Emet Educational Director
cwalinsky@kolemet.org
When I look back on yet another year, I reminisce about
the achievements, successes, funny moments, and
growth. I also seriously think about areas that need
improvement and how I can work to make things
better.
In our preschool, our achievements are many. We have
set the bar for other synagogue schools to achieve a
STAR 3. Our standards in quality care, professionalism,
and environment are all top notch. We have celebrated
meaningful moments as children with Autism and
Asperger’s have been accepted, appreciated, and have
blossomed in our school. We have kept a loving eye on
all our children and have also nurtured, supported, and
counseled parents to provide the best services and
support for their children.
This is our staff, this is whom we are, 13 women willing
to go above and beyond to make every school day the
most meaningful. I publically thank Lauren Young,
Robyn Trause, Sue Mager, Elyce Rosen, Maria Goldinger,
Heidi Bush, Denise Kaplan, Dana Robinson, Claudia Block,
Heather Finkle, and Iris Pearson for the love they have
given each and every child in our school. Along those lines
we say L’hitraot (see you soon . . . never goodbye) to Sue
Mager and Maria Goldinger who have been two
outstanding teachers and we will all miss them, but we
wish them the very best.
Our religious school has been blessed with the finest
educators and an amazing, dedicated group of aides and
volunteers who are beyond committed to the success of
our school. We have enjoyed great programs, quality
curriculum, and enthusiastic staff that make every class
memorable and meaningful. It is very common to hear
guest speakers share their positive remarks as to how
attentive, respectful, and intelligent our students are.
Todah Rabah to Hillary Kotzen, Aaron Walinsky, Adam
Strom, Bonnie Gold, Rabbi Cove, Fran Fried, Shari Beck-
Nahman, Vicki Umbro, Barbara Faber, Elise Bernstein, Sue
Mager, and Sari Hussey. You have all been an incredible,
passionate, and caring faculty. Our Kol Emet children are
very blessed to have you in their lives. Again, I bow
graciously to our 22 aides and volunteers who provide so
much to our students. They deserve so much for all that
they do.
As for improvements, there is always room to grow. In our
preschool we are looking to not only expand our
playground but also expand our early childhood skills. A
program called Positive Behavior Support will hopefully be
implemented in our school provided state funding is
approved. In religious school we are planning to bring back
our amazing enrichment program that created an extra
meaningful experiential facet to Jewish education in our
school. Plans are underway for a Rick Recht Shabbat Alive
program in December, and the Catskill Puppet Theatre
performing “The Town that Fought Hate” in April.
In the area of growth and improvement I encourage you to
always share your insight, wisdom, and concerns. We all
want what is best for all 286 children in both schools. As
your Educational Director I want to hear your ideas. We
are all on the same side – your child’s advocate. Consider
becoming a member of either the preschool or religious
school committee; we need your help and guidance.
And as a final note, I promised you the funniest moments
of this past year. It seems like every day there is something
The Voice of Kol Emet Page 2
to laugh at. But the awards go to Chase DeAngelo in our
preschool, and Micah Kubanoff in our religious school.
Chase who has become our afternoon late care mascot
witnessed my fall when I broke my ankle. He calmly
turned to his friend Brooklyn and asked, “Is Miss Carrie
going to die?”
Micah is a 2 nd grade student in our religious school. We
recently had a guest Holocaust survivor speak – Kurt
Herman, a very charming 83-year-old man. As always I
ask the children if they have any questions for our
guest. Micah raised his hand and asked Kurt if he was
interested in meeting his grandmother who is single –
he thought they would make a great match!
So there you have it in a nutshell, why I love my job so
much and why I am so deeply honored to work with our
amazing Kol Emet staff.
Have a great summer. I will always be a phone call away
if you want to share ideas.
isn’t Shabbat without some intellectual stimulation and
Torah study. Kol Emet congregants and scholars Edgar
House and Paul Levine enlightened us and delighted us
with their insights and humor.
Our day continued with different activities for all ages.
There was yoga with our own wonderful congregant and
President’s Message – Melody Katz
On the most beautiful day in the month of April, Kol
Emet renewed its long ago tradition of a Shabbaton.
What is a Shabbaton we were asked? According to
Wikipedia, Shabbaton means, “an event or program of
education, and usually celebration, that is held on a
Shabbat. Sometimes a Shabbaton is an entire weekend
with the main focus on the Shabbat.” As
Reconstructionist Jews living in two civilizations,
Shabbat has come to mean errands, sports, shopping,
laundry, and lots of schlepping. We haven’t quite
embraced the idea that the gift of Shabbat is to just BE.
BE thankful for what we have, BE with our friends and
family, BE with our thoughts, BE joyful and BELONG.
Our beautiful April day brought us all of these gifts and
more.
Shabbat began with a joyous, musical service lead by
Rabbi Cove and Susan Sacks. Our own congregant Josh
Rosenberg, on drums, added so much to the guitar,
tambourines, and our voices. There is a reason Jewish
camp has been shown to insure Jewish identity better
than almost anything else does. The joy of singing and
praying with our Kol Emet community with nature and
music all around us is what Shabbat is truly all about! It
resident yogi, Sherry Hanck, meditation with Levi
Gershkowitz, arts and crafts, and sports at the great
Briarwood facilities. After a delicious lunch that ended
with a rousing rendition of the Birkat Hamazon (blessing
after the meal), we had the first annual Kol Emet Maccabi
games under the direction of Coach Bob Fink. Besides
doing a fabulous job planning all the sporting events he
had too much fun riding in the golf cart and blowing his
whistle. From soccer to potato sack races the kids AND
adults had a wonderful time. Special honorable mention
goes to goalie Rabbi Cove who didn’t let anything get by
him and Charlie Lavine who wowed us all with his soccer
The Voice of Kol Emet Page 3
prowess. Have to give kudos to the old folks…just
kidding guys!
The end of Pesach has never tasted better with the
delicious pizza and pasta, water ice and yummy s’mores
Congregational Meeting Update, Long Range Planning
A committee of congregants has been meeting for several
months searching for ideas that will be useful in meeting
the needs of the congregation throughout the Jewish
lifetime. We have been guided by outside professionals
who have identified a broad range of age groups having
their own needs for what the synagogue can and should
provide.
Recently a series of congregational meetings were held to
explore, by age group, what was needed, what was missing
and several similar questions. Over 50 members attended
these meetings.
The Long Range Planning Committee is now analyzing this
information and will be prepared to make some specific
recommendations for programs / activities that YOU
wanted. The plan is to implement at least one of the
programs/activities shortly after the New Year. A few key
areas needing change were identified and we will explore
ways to enhance these aspects of Kol Emet.
Come to the annual congregational meeting on Sunday,
June 3 rd at 7 pm to hear more about the findings from our
series of congregational meetings.
Burt Sutker, Chair-Long Range Planning Committee
we all shared. Susan Sacks ended our wonderful
Shabbaton with a fun sing along at the campfire
roasting marshmallows, eating s’mores and being with
friends and family. David Gordon was our food manager
extraordinaire and made sure all meals were delicious,
prepared, and set up and on time!
I can’t adequately describe the wonderful Ruach (spirit)
and sense of Kehillah (community) felt that day. The
feelings coming from that day made me want to do just
one small thing to bring that mood to every Shabbat. It
made me realize the true gift of Shabbat if we could
only find it in our busy schedules to let ourselves BE.
Please join us next year on April 13, 2013 at Briarwood
Day Camp for our next Shabbaton and just BE. BE
thankful, BE with friends and family, BE with our
thoughts, BE joyful, and BELONG.
Kamp Kol Emet Returns for the Summer of 2012
It’s that time of year again as we start to yearn for
summer; Kids out of school, sunny days, warm nights,
and fun-filled weekends with BBQ's, swimming and
baseball.
During the week, many moms struggle with how to
keep their children busy and out of trouble. Camp
comes to our rescue for all ages. Kamp Kol Emet is
perfect for your 2, 3 or 4 year old. It helps ease the
transition into preschool for the youngest child and
helps bridge the gap of what can feel like a very long
summer for a 3 or 4 year old.
We offer a safe, nurturing environment for your child to
run through the sprinklers, do some crafts, and enjoy time
with their friends and energetic counselors. This gives
moms a few hours off to go to the gym, supermarket or
straighten up without worry. Please come check us out.
We offer a 3-day program Tues., Wed. and Thurs. from
9am-12pm with the option to extend an hour for lunch
until 1pm. Come for 1 week, come for 8! We also offer
Haley has decided to focus on Pediatric Cancer fundraising for her Bat Mitzvah
project. She will be collecting both the tabs from soda cans and the plastic bottle
caps from basically any bottle. The caps go to the Hershey Medical Center Pediatric
Cancer and they are able to generate money for recycling. The soda tabs go the
Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia where the money raised from the recycling
helps support the families staying there while their children are being treated. In
addition she is collecting money to provide a week of camp for a child with cancer.
It costs $500 for each child to go to camp. So far she has raised over $1,400. The
goal is to send as many sick children happy, even if it’s only for 1 week by going to
this special overnight camp. I have a fundraising website for people to make tax
deductible donations.
MITZVAH AND MEMORY
Death often brings more than sorrow and grief. It creates changes and all kinds of disruptions in our lives. In times of confusion,
pain, and personal loss, many of us seek support from community, and a connection with earlier generations. We do this through
participating in rituals and traditions from our Jewish way of life. Whether we consider ourselves religious or not, whether we
pray once or twice a year or regularly, we can derive meaning and rebuild our emotional foundation from the words, symbols, and
faith of our spiritual heritage. Our Thursday morning Minyan, Shabbat evening and Shabbat morning worship can provide the
spiritual nourishment and community connections you might need as you grieve a loss or mark the anniversary of a loved one’s
passing.
Coming to the synagogue on a Yahrzeit, anniversary, of a loved one’s death, and saying Kaddish, is a meaningful way to transform
our memories into a living tribute to our departed. Our own lives are made holier by rising to proclaim our faith in the names of
those who have passed. Please consider joining us in prayer at a time of Yahrzeit and perform a powerful mitzvah to pay tribute to
your memories.
