of shooting or looting. But at night in the half
destroyed towns and villages, sitting at home at
the curfew of eight o’ clock you could sometimes
hear the distant shooting in the mountains. That
is the constant fear of the people in Aceh, the
fear of being caught in fire is even bigger than
the fear for another Tsunami.
Living in the war in Burundi or Aceh, constantly
afraid that rebels will pass by to steal and abuse,
is terrible. On top of this, a sudden wave takes
away half of your family, friends and belongings.
It is great to help providing at least a little care
and attention to those who need it so much. And
I learned a lot from how people deal with their
loss and their fear together. For example the three
guards who lost everything in the Tsunami and
got together on the roof of our warehouse calling
themselves ‘Baywatch’. I do miss the work for
Doctors without Borders, but it is really hard
to combine with a family. And it is good to be
back home.
