Events LexMar Engineering Text Marieke Ghijsen Photos Frank Kuijsters After a - for Singaporean standards - long ride, we arrived at Loyang Way for a company visit to LexMar Engineering. Once inside the building, the first thing that attracted our attention was the Diving Bell in the middle of the hall. Curiosity was born, were people actually supposed to go and stay inside this Bell? But, before starting the official part of the evening, and getting answers to all our questions, we were offered welcome drinks and a delicious buffet. After the drinks and buffet, Marieke Barker, CEO and owner of LexMar Engineering, warmly welcomed more than 30 ADB members to her company. She explained how the company started in 1996, and how it became what it is today. The name LexMar was derived from the names of founders Lex and Marieke Barker (besides this, it also means Law of the Sea in Latin). Back in 1996, LexMar was originally founded as a company providing equipment refurbishment and services to the diving industry. Over the years the company evolved and grew into one of the three major suppliers in the world of saturation diving systems. After Marieke’s welcome, several staff members briefly commented on the technical background of the systems, preparing us for taking a very close look at all the different components of a saturation diving system. Throughout the hall, at different locations within the manufacturing facility, 8 different staff members were guiding us through a whole new world. All the features of the Diving Bell were explained, the Saturation Control Module, the Dive Control Module, the Gas Management Module and the Decompression Chambers. A short insight will now be given for the non-attendees, but to be honest, you should have been there to hear the staff explain and tell you all about their equipment! People suffering from claustrophobia were offered a new way of experiencing this fear; not only are the divers in and around a Diving Bell for up to 8 hours, but this Bell can be submerged up to 300 meters below the surface, so surrounded by darkness. The bell itself has space for three people, but not much more than that. Considering the suits, gear and helmets they will be wearing, it does not leave much space to move around. Once the bell is in its position, two divers will go out, and one diver remains inside to monitor life support and provide emergency backup if required. When not working from the Diving Bell, the Divers live in the Decompression Chambers. The Chambers can best be described as a room somewhere between a space
