<strong>Official</strong> <strong>Spell<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Bee</strong> <strong>Rules</strong><br />
<strong>1.</strong> A <strong>panel</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>judges</strong> <strong>will</strong> <strong>be</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>complete</strong> control <strong>of</strong> the spell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>be</strong>e and shall declare the<br />
champion.<br />
2. The competition <strong>will</strong> <strong>be</strong>g<strong>in</strong> by all contestants <strong>be</strong><strong>in</strong>g given a word to spell.<br />
3. The Pronouncer <strong>will</strong> pronounce the word.<br />
4. The contestant may request the Pronouncer to re-pronounce the word, def<strong>in</strong>e it, or use it <strong>in</strong> a<br />
sentence. The source used for the def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>will</strong> <strong>be</strong> The American Heritage Dictionary,<br />
Second College Edition.<br />
5. No capital letters <strong>will</strong> <strong>be</strong> used.<br />
6. The contestant may pronounce the word <strong>be</strong>fore spell<strong>in</strong>g, after spell<strong>in</strong>g, or not at all. It is<br />
recommended that the contestant pronounce the word both <strong>be</strong>fore and after spell<strong>in</strong>g, to<br />
ensure the contestant understands the word.<br />
7. Hav<strong>in</strong>g started to spell a word, a contestant shall not <strong>be</strong> permitted to change letters already<br />
pronounced. If there is any change <strong>in</strong> the orig<strong>in</strong>al letters and/or the sequence, the speller <strong>will</strong><br />
<strong>be</strong> disqualified.<br />
8. Upon miss<strong>in</strong>g the spell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a word, the contestant shall <strong>be</strong> dropped from the contest. The<br />
next word <strong>will</strong> <strong>be</strong> given to the next contestant from the Pronouncer’s list.<br />
9. When the contestants are reduced to two people, the elim<strong>in</strong>ation process changes. When one<br />
contestant misspells a word, the other contestant shall <strong>be</strong> given the opportunity to spell the<br />
same word. If the second contestant spells the word correctly, plus the next word from the<br />
list, then the second contestant shall <strong>be</strong> declared the champion.<br />
10.If one <strong>of</strong> the two contestants misspells a word and the next contestant correctly spells it, but<br />
misspells the new word submitted by the Pronouncer, then the misspelled new word shall <strong>be</strong><br />
referred to the other contestant. If the other contestant succeeds <strong>in</strong> correct<strong>in</strong>g the error and<br />
correctly spells the next word on the list, then that contestant shall <strong>be</strong> declared the champion.<br />
1<strong>1.</strong>If both spellers misspell the same word, both shall cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>in</strong> the contest and the one who<br />
first misspelled the word shall <strong>be</strong> given a new word to spell. The contestant shall cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />
us<strong>in</strong>g Rule 9 until a champion is declared.
