Welcome to
Walton Lane
Good afternoon, and welcome to Walton
Lane for today’s West Sussex Football
League Premier Division fixture against
Newtown Villa.
We extend a warm welcome to our visitors
who make the short journey from the
Bognor area for today’s game, and to match
referee, Chris McInnes, from Worthing.
So, after a break of 44 days, it was pleasing
to finally get back to action last weekend
against West Chiltington.
Andy Probee and his team of volunteers
worked wonders on the pitch before the
game to ensure it went ahead, with local
residents kindly providing their petrol
mowers to give it a cut. Many thanks if you
were involved!
After the perhaps inevitable sluggish start
following such a period of inactivity, a muchchanged
Bosham gradually got into the
game and should have really been in front
going into the break.
However in typical fashion, it was the visitors
to strike first before Bradley Miles got his
name back on the scoresheet in Bosham
colours following his recent transfer from
Wessex League side, Petersfield Town.
Given the fact we had half-a-dozen regulars
missing for various reasons, a point from the
outset might not have sounded such a bad
result, however having laid siege to the
Chiltington goal was slightly disappointing
that we had to settle for a point against a
side who will be there-or-there-abouts at
the end of the season.
Good to see Billy Huntley back following his
lengthy ban – the former Fareham Town
man put in a good performance on the right
hand side of midfield against Chiltington;
while the game also gave a debut to former
Selsey striker, Dave Storey who recently
signed from Division 2 (South) side,
Boxgrove.
All three lads who came off the bench in the
closing stages played their part - Jack
Antony, Danny Mullen and Charlie Cooper -
and gives great cause for optimism for both
the reserves and general competition for
places when we have everyone available.
Although the weather has now been kind
two weeks in a row (don’t speak too
soon…!!) it’s perhaps ironic that James Ash’s
reserves are without a game again, however
have every chance of success in Division 4
(South) with four of their final five games at
home.
We have been in dialogue with the Sussex FA
this week in regards to our Football
Foundation grant application to support two
new youth teams at under 13 and under 16’s
next season, and have had a very positive
response – a final decision is expected in
early May.
After a season without the youth set-up, we
are excited to get this aspect of the club back
up and running again, which will provide an
outlet for football participation to local
youngsters, and hopefully assist their
progress long-term in to the senior set-up –
which is so important for a club at our level.
Our Community Amateur Sports Club
application has been submitted this week to
HMRC which will enable us to make annual
claims against donations and travel expenses
(anything is a bonus); while both manager,
Andy Probee and Matt Docherty attended
Hampshire FA Emergency Aid courses in
Portsmouth to assist our Charter Standard
application which we hope to push through
by the end of the season.
A quick note on today’s visitors, Newtown
Villa – historically a strong force in the West
Sussex League, and have beaten Wittering
United and West Chiltington convincingly
this season. Newtown also average nearly
four goals a game in the Premier Division this
season – and smashed seven past Faygate
last weekend, with Matt Russell scoring four
-so we’ll be in for a tough afternoon if we are
to avenge for the 3-2 defeat in this fixture
last season and keep our grip on top spot.
Enjoy the game, and Up The Robins!

W Chiltington 1
West Sussex Football League
– Premier Division
By Alan Price
In his first game since returning to the
club, Bradley Miles showed that he had
lost none of his goal scoring touch to grab
an important point for a much-changed
Bosham against fellow title hopefuls, West
Chiltington, and get the Robins title push
back on track after two months without a
game due to the inclement weather.
Both sides remembered the reverse
fixture from earlier in the season only too
well, and Bosham were fully intent on
exacting revenge to continue their League
momentum now the weather had finally
taken a turn for the better. The ground at
Walton Lane was soft but relatively dry for
the game, with volunteers working hard to
ensure a smart playing surface, which
belied the relentless rain it had taken in
recent weeks.
The opening was sluggish from both teams
- perhaps not surprising with the lack of
match football recently - and chances
were rare. However, Bosham, marshalled
excellently in the midfield by Miles,
started to show their metal and soon had
the blues on the back foot with new
signing, Dave Storey and stalwart, Neil
Redman, showing good pace and
awareness to crack holes in the West
Chiltington defence.
On the quarter hour Miles hit the bar with
keeper, David Williams well beaten.
This was shortly followed by another good
effort from the midfield maestro which
flew just wide of the target. Neil Redman
then went close from a free-kick which
was cleared off the Chiltington goal line.
Both Dan Clayton and Daniel Leppard were
becoming an increasing threat to the
Bosham back line but still struggled to find
a clear shot on goal in the final third,
leaving Bosham keeper, Simon Hasted,
with little to do as the half wore on.
Nick Edgington then launched one of his
surging runs at the heart of the opposing
defence and broke through on goal only
for Williams to come up with a sublime
save to keep the tie goalless as the half
time interval approached.
The second period was frenetic to say the
least. Both sides threw everything at the
other in search of the goal to break the
deadlock and the crowd were rewarded on
seventy four minutes when the blues
edged in front thanks to the redoubtable
Clayton.
The diminutive striker pushed forward
through a hole in the Bosham defence and
fired a low shot across goalkeeper Hasted,
with his shot nestling in the bottom
corner, to the delight of teammates.
Bosham regrouped and within a minute
were back on level terms. West
Chiltington failed to deal with a ball into
the heart of their box and after a short
scramble, the ball ended up at the feet of
Miles who blasted the ball home through
the crowd to deservedly draw Bosham
level.
Despite all efforts neither side could find
what surely would have been a winning
goal in what remained of the match so
both were left to leave the pitch
frustrated, but with Bosham certainly
feeling the better of the two sides.
Bosham now look forward to back to back
ties against Newtown Villa over the next
two weeks and will definitely hope for
maximum points on their continuing quest
for glory.
Blast From
The Past…
By Bob Probee
Saturday, February 6, 1988
Sussex County League Division Two Cup
Quarter-Final
Bosham 2 Little Common Albion 0
Bottom-of-the-table Bosham took a break
from league action in this quarter-final
match in the Division 2 Cup against fourth
placed Little Common.
Deputising boss Gary Brockway selected a
strong team - returning were Phil Andrews
and Dave Barnes; Rick Hatton made his first
home appearance of the season and Lloyd
Fowler returned after work commitments.
After a goalless first half, the Robins put the
pressure on in the second half and two goals
in eight minutes saw Bosham safely in the
semi-final. Mick Dillon scored the first after
the Albion ‘keeper had blocked the first
attempt and a right (!!!) foot volley from Rick
Kennett made the match safe.
Bosham: Malcolm Cook, Andy Gulvin, Dave
Barnes, Dave Rae, Pete Bender, Phil
Andrews, Neil Roe, Rick Kennett, Rick
Hatton, Mick Dillon, Lloyd Fowler. Subs: Pete
Hewett, Gary Macey. Manager: Gary
Brockway (deputising for Dave Wiseman)
Bosham went on to lose to an 88 th minute
solitary goal by Newhaven in the semi-final.
The final saw Chichester City triumph 2-1.
Bosham managed to finish the season one
off the bottom which was enough to avoid
relegation that season.
Saturday, February 23, 1991
Sussex County League Division Two Cup
Quarter-Final
Bosham 3 Newhaven 0
Bosham produced an excellent performance
against league leaders Newhaven to earn a
place in the semi-final of the Division 2 Cup.
After a tentative first half in which the
Robins held a ‘star-studded’ Newhaven side,
Neil Roe’s headed goal from an immaculate
Dave Barnes pass put Bosham in front twelve
minutes after the break.
An excellent individual goal from Jeff
Marshall seven minutes later knocked the
stuffing out of Newhaven and a clever freekick
from the recalled Rick Hatton sealed
victory in the 62 nd minute. Bosham were well
on top in the second half, playing some neat
football - Jeff Marshall could have earned
himself a hat-trick.
Bosham: Gary Penhaligon, Gary Macey, Dave
Barnes, Barry Strawbridge, Rick Hatton, Mick
Swyer, Neil Roe, Pete Bender, Jeff Marshall,
Lloyd Fowler, Ronnie Adams. Subs: Rob
Shorey, Phil Andrews. Manager: Neil Hider.
Bosham went on to lose 0-2 to Chichester
City in the semi-final played at Portfield (now
defunct). Chichester City went on to beat
Stamco 3-0 in extra time in the final.
Saturday, February 5, 1994
Sussex County League Division Three
Bosham 1 Seaford Town 0
Bosham entered this match as runaway
leaders of Division Three having won eleven,
drawn three and lost only once to date.
After a goalless first half, the match was held
up for 35 minutes when a serious looking
injury to Bosham’s Lee Smith that required
an ambulance to be called to the ground.
The game re-started with a free-kick for the
Robins on the edge of the box and Gary
Wheatcroft forced home Steve Clapp’s clever
delivery. Seaford tried desperately to get
back in the game but it was Bosham who
held out for yet another three points.
Bosham: Dean Waterman, Michael Watkin,
Sean Taylor, Pete Bender, Billy Cole, Alan
Parrott, Simon Pope, Martin Orzabal, Lee
Smith, Steve Clapp. Gary Wheatcroft. Subs:
Paul Wallbridge, Darren Gauntlett. Manager
Richie Reynolds.
Bosham went on to finish the season as
champions of Division Three to gain
promotion to Division Two.

Bosham Football Club – History
Formed in 1901, Bosham were founder members of Division Three of the County League in
1983/84 following a long and established period within local football. Their inaugural season at
the higher standard ended with a commendable fourth placed finish. The following year of
1984/85, the club finished runners-up to Oakwood, winning promotion to Division Two. To cap a
very successful season, Bosham also won the Division Three League Cup – a feat they were to
repeat in 2009/10.
Having won promotion in 1985/86, Bosham had mixed fortunes in senior football with their best
effort a sixth place finish in 1990/91, although the following season they were relegated back to
Division Three after seven years at the higher level. However, in 1993/94, they were promoted
back again as champions – albeit a short-live success, as the following two seasons saw
successive relegations back to the West Sussex Football League.
Following an overhaul of both players and management, Bosham enjoyed a resurgence on the
pitch resulting in one of their most successful seasons ever in 1998/99, winning the coveted
‘treble’ of the West Sussex Premier Division; Malcolm Simmonds Cup and the Centenary Cup – a
feat no other club has achieved.
1999/00 saw Bosham champions once again, making a welcome return to senior football and
scoring 109 goals along the way – an average of 3.6 per game - although following a mid-table
finish in 2000/01, The Robins found themselves bottom of the pile the following year and ‘yoyoed’
back down to Division 3.
The club once again struggled in Division Three, but a late revival saw them finish one place off
the bottom, five points clear of Uckfield Town. Although a relegation position, the resignation of
Oving – coupled with only Wadhurst United meeting the requirements for promotion - spared
them the drop.
Until 2006/07 – a year when Bosham were once again reprieved after a picking up the Division
Three wooden spoon – there had been signs of improvement, with the club appearing
reasonably comfortable in Division Three after many up and down seasons; and in 2004/05,
reached the Final of the Sussex Intermediate Cup, where they were defeated by Rustington.
Cup success again afforded the Walton Lane side in 2008/09 when they were beaten by a
solitary goal to nil against fellow Division Three side, Forest, in the final of the same trophy.
However Bosham did find the winning formula the following season, drafting in a largely
youthful squad alongside one or two more experienced heads, to lead the club to the Division 3
title for the third time; the Division Three Challenge Cup, and the Team of the Year award.
Unfortunately, league ground grading regulations were to this time go against Bosham and they
were denied a place back in senior football. Despite this knock, the club managed to keep the
majority of the side that earned their top spot the previous season, and gallantly went on to
finish in fourth place in 2010/11.
In September 2011, Bosham won a sponsorship deal with home improvement retailer, Wickes,
and featured in national newspaper, The Sun. Bosham fought off 300 other non-league clubs to
win the competition. The windfall funded a make over for the changing rooms, new kit, training
equipment and coaching.
After encouragingly winning six of their opening nine league games of the 2011/12 campaign, a
changeable Bosham side saw their season ebb out, as they finished below mid-table. However,
the club were demoted to the West Sussex Premier Division for the start of the 2012/13 season,
owing to ground grading regulations.
Under the guidance of Tony Hancock, the Robins finished in third place in their return season in
West Sussex Premier Division. Despite a positive start to the 2013/14 campaign, Hancock ended
his ten year reign in charge of The Robins, with long-serving player Andy Probee taking over the
role in November 2013.
Although Bosham have never competed in the FA Cup, they were entrants to the FA Vase
between 1986 and 1990, however in facing stiff opposition, never managed to win in this
competition.
