President’s message
Recently we had the opportunity to submit to Fair
Work suggested changes to the hairdressing and
beauty award. We await information regarding the
next stage moving forward and will keep you informed
of the outcomes.
As always, I greatly value the feedback from industry
on what we are doing so please feel free to contact
me via the HBIA office any time. There is always room
for new ideas and improvements so feel free to give
any ideas regarding services or the industry in general.
We have many entries coming in for the competitions
scheduled for 20 May I am sure it will be another
great day and we will witness some wonderful work.
Following the competitions we will be accepting
nominations for the HBIA Awards. This is a great

Welcome to Salon Update. In the coming weeks
we will be staging the HBIA competitions as
well as our student awards evening. You will find
information regarding the event in the following
pages as well as our meet the judges night which
was a great success last year.
We will be sending out nominations for our awards
night in the coming weeks so please if you have an
outstanding apprentice or student can you please
nominate to HBIA.
I hope that you have all been receiving you
e newsletters which does provide up to date and
latest information and really is an easy way to keep
informed. These will continue as will the Salon
Update. If you are not receiving the e newsletters
please call HBIA offices and ensure we have the
correct details. We have also been delighted at how
many have been joining us on facebook and keeping
up to date with all of our news.
It was disappointing the see the decision by the
Government to withdraw funding of the industry
training boards. HBIA have been associated with

event and I am always heartened to see the wonderful
young people we get to meet via this awards process.
I look forward to being a part of it again.
I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Frank
Burgemestre. Our thoughts and prayers to Anne
and the Family. Frank was a wonderful part of this
amazing industry and will always be remembered.

our industry training board since it commenced and
are saddened that the Government can be so short
sighted in withdrawing support for what has been an
independent voice for industry.
Service Skills Victoria was formulated with a bi
partisan approach meaning it had salon owners,
union and industry organisations involved. The path
it followed was often difficult but it had always been
able to present to Government the real story without
bias. It appears the Government may not want to
hear the real story and hence feels there is no longer a
role for such an organisation. I will report to you in the
next Salon Update the result of this action.

Educator Awards recognises and
celebrates the outstanding students,
apprentices and educators working within
the hairdressing and beauty industries.
The HBIA Apprentice, Student and
Educator Awards provides an opportunity
for today’s industry leaders to recognise
the RTO’s and young achievers in industry
and encourage all who enter the industry
to strive for excellence.
