Chatham Middle School is committed to providing a safe and secure environment. In addition, a proper<br />

learning atmosphere is essential for the education of each student.<br />

CMS Standard School Attire is an effective strategy to promote enhanced student appearance and<br />

behavior, which are key ingredients of a positive learning environment in which student safety and<br />

achievement are the highest priorities.<br />

DEFINITION OF STANDARD SCHOOL ATTIRE<br />

A. Pants, shorts, capri pants, skirts, skorts or jumpers in solid, dark colors of: blue, black, brown,<br />

or khaki.<br />

B. Shirts with short or long sleeves (polo, dress-style with button, turtleneck, mock turtleneck, or<br />

crew neck tee), in solids, stripes, and plaids.<br />

C. All shirts should be properly buttoned and tucked inside pants, shorts, skorts or skirts.<br />

IMPLEMENTATION DETAILS<br />

Students’ dress and grooming will be clean and neat. Clothes and appearance must be safe and not<br />

disruptive to the educational process. The administration reserves the right to establish additional dress<br />

standards as needs arise.<br />

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS<br />

A. The Standard School Attire policy will be in effect during the school year.<br />

B. Students will wear clothing of appropriate size. Approximate sizes are defined as no more than one<br />

size smaller or one size larger than the student’s actual clothing size. Pants, shorts, capri pants, skorts<br />

or skirts must fit at the waist and must not sag.<br />

C. The school will not require specific brands of clothing. No writing is allowed on clothing except logos or<br />

manufacturer trademarks which may be no larger than three inches. CMS/CHS logos, accredited<br />

college logos, and Armed Services logos are permitted.<br />

D. All clothing must be hemmed. No drawstrings, cut-offs or rolled-up cuffs are allowed on pants, capri<br />

pants, shorts or skirts.


PANTS, SHORTS, CAPRI PANTS, SKIRTS, SKORTS, JUMPERS<br />

1. Full-length pants, cropped pants, and straight-legged capri pants are permitted. Pants/jeans must be<br />

straight-leg or boot cut.<br />

2. The hemlines of shorts, jumpers, dresses, skirts or skorts must be no more than 4” above the knee.<br />

3. The top of the pocket area must be visible at all times.<br />

4. Leggings may be worn with skirts but not as pants.<br />

SHIRTS AND TOPS<br />

1. Long or short sleeve, 3 or 4 button polo shirts (golf shirt), oxford/dress shirts, turtle and mock turtle<br />

neck shirts, and crew neck tee shirts are acceptable.<br />

2. All blouses and shirts should be properly buttoned and pocket area of pants or skirts must be visible.<br />

Chests, stomachs, and backs must be covered.<br />

3. Sweatshirts/sweaters are acceptable as an additional garment over an approved shirt. All shirts must<br />

be “properly buttoned.” In general, this means that no more than the top two or three buttons can be left<br />

unbuttoned, even if an undergarment such as a crew neck tee or camisole is worn under the shirt.<br />

FOOTWEAR<br />

Students must wear shoes with a supportive back/strap that does not pass the ankle, with a heel height no<br />

greater than 2 inches.<br />

JACKETS<br />

Students may wear sweater and fleece jackets/hoodies to class as long as the pocket area of the bottoms<br />

can still be seen. All winter coats and oversized sweaters must be left in lockers during the school day.<br />

PROHIBITED ATTIRE<br />

A. Torn clothing is prohibited--No frays, rips, shreds, or holes.<br />

B. Logos or manufacturer’s trademarks with writing or images of substances that are illegal for teens<br />

(i.e. drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products) or are otherwise offensive, lewd, indecent, vulgar,<br />

obscene, profane, gang-related, or constitute racial or ethnic slurs.<br />

C. Tattoos must be covered at all times.<br />

D. Inappropriate jewelry includes: ring/studs in the nose, eyebrow, tongue, lip—jelly bracelets, rubber<br />

bands, silly bands, spiked jewelry, chains, collars, non-functional belts, large belt buckles,<br />

medallions, fishing hooks, and any other jewelry deemed dangerous by the administration.<br />

E. Head coverings such as bandanas, scarves, sweatbands, caps, do-rags or hairnets are not to be<br />

worn or seen during school time. Religious head wear is permissible. Headbands may be no more<br />

than 3” wide.<br />

F. Low rise bottoms, any other bottoms that do not completely cover the buttocks area or are<br />

excessively tight.<br />

G. Bottoms that appear to be pajamas, lounge wear, or sweatpants.<br />

H. Unsuitable materials for bottoms include: leather, suede, spandex, nylon, vinyl, and stretch<br />

materials (jeggings).Halter tops, tank tops, tops with spaghetti straps or any top that shows<br />

underclothing (bra, camisole, see through garments).
