Bearings
With bearing customers now looking to secure long term partnerships on
existing and future projects with their supplier base, it is fundamental ERIKS
can accommodate their needs and be able to offer support at any
level. Our bearings experts strive to stand out from the crowd
and be considered first time, every time.
ERIKS’ bearing
experts offer
unrivalled
engineering
support at
all levels.
The right support
when you need it
In the ever changing world of OEM and
MRO markets, it is paramount the
Bearing Core Competence Centre
(BCCC) can offer support across all
disciplines, whether that be on the
shopfloor or in the boardroom.
Vital engineering support services come in
the form of qualified engineers, many of
whom are long serving ERIKS employees,
who are placed strategically within the
nine regions of the UK. With a knowledge
span from the manufacturing sector, as
well as internal sales and technical
support, we are able to support the
various business units within the
organisation from technical know-how to
project management at OEM level.
The BCCC office offers dedicated support
to the distribution network to assist with
pricing and availability as well as guidance
on the best manufacturer to use as a route
to market, generating the best growth
whilst offering a seamless transition
between enquiry and purchase order.
Savings with lubrication surveys
The lubrication survey of a customer’s
equipment and subsequent provision
of a lubrication schedule provides the
customer with a valuable document
which can produce savings throughout
the manufacturing operation.
The lubrication schedule is a best
practice document designed with
the primary objective of ensuring
Our staff always aim to provide the fastest
response times to customer site visits,
where required, in addition to supporting
the branch network on day to day bearings
and lubrication activities.
Through continued support to the ERIKS
network we are able to offer inspection,
investigation and impartial
recommendations to prevent bearings and
lubrication failure. This gives us more
flexibility when selecting a suitable
Premature failure
Bearing expertise
Nearly 2 in 3 of all rolling bearings
fail to reach their full design life.
Reasons for premature
bearing failure
ERIKS identify four main reasons
for premature bearing failure:
Incorrectly applied force will transfer for bearing mounting/dismounting and
of critical bearings.
An accelerated failure is then inevitable. For fitting solutions see Simatool
ERIKS help our customers to select the products and Simatherm induction
34% of premature failures are as a result of mechanical fatigue
If overloaded or shock loaded bearings find ERIKS bearing experts experience
Premature fatigue failure is also caused applications across all sectors helps us
international bearing manufactures at
our disposal.
36% of premature failures are as a result of poor lubrication
Most bearings require some form of ERIKS’ dedicated lubrication engineers,
lubricant and therefore rely on selecting source the optimum lubricant and help
the right lubricant, in the right quantity and choose the most effective delivery method.
specifying correct re-lubrication intervals. We can even manage your lubrication
Although ‘sealed-for-life’ bearings can be regime for you.
fitted, some 36% of premature bearing For lubricant solutions see OKS
failures are still caused by incorrect pages 92-93 (in Tools and
specification and inadequate application Maintenance section), for lubrication
of lubricant. It may surprise you to know solutions see Simalube automatic
that over-lubrication can be as damaging lubricators page 86.
as under-lubrication.
14% of premature failures are
as a result of contamination
Even tiny amounts of contamination
can adversely affect the operating
life of your bearings. Particles smaller
than a human hair can break down
the lubricant film (between the
rolling elements and the raceway)
leading to metal to metal contact.
Many premature failures resulting
from contamination are due to
inadequate sealing arrangements
as much as they are related to
harsh operating environments.
ERIKS’ own sealing division specialises
in the design and manufacture of seals
and our engineers are uniquely placed
to develop solutions that exactly suit
your application requirements.
Revolvo Split Roller Bearings
Reduce Fitting Time by up to 90%
In industry today there are huge pressures on engineers and maintenance
personnel to increase plant efficiency and minimise downtime.
That is why, when the unexpected happens, Revolvo Split
Roller Bearings are essential: because they can provide
a staggering 90% reduction in fitting time, compared to
their solid equivalents. And faster fitting means less plant
downtime – saving you £000s.
The split-to-the-shaft feature enables the bearing to be fitted
without requiring access to the shaft ends. Instead, it can
be built around the shaft, saving hundreds of pounds in
unnecessary downtime as there is no need to remove other
drive components.
bearings
For example: An ERIKS customer had issues with their gas
cool air fan application. Historically to change one retained
and one expansion bearing took 14 hours and 2 apprentices.
Following a consultation with ERIKS bearing technical
specialists they decided to switch to SRB 01 Light series units.
With supervision and training from the ERIKS technical
specialist the first installation took just 6 hours. In addition it
is now possible for the customer to change just the bearings,
as the cast iron housing outlives the bearings, within 2 hours
(1 hour for each bearing). Saving in the region of £216k per
annum in downtime, added to this the prolonged life of the split
bearings, which have so far provided double the life span of the
original units – then Revolvo Split Roller Bearings really are the
essential solution.
Available in 01 Light Series 35mm to 600mm, 02 Medium Series 45mm to 600mm and 03 Heavy Series in 100mm to 600mm.
Bearing Housings
This simple and flexible housing system offers solutions suitable for virtually all
applications. Offering a relubrication facility, they have excellent heat conduction
through a rib that also increases housing rigidity, and feature internal tolerances equal
to those of the bearing to be housed, helping to extend its life significantly. A vast
range of sealing arrangements, end covers and locating rings are available.
Designed in consultation with customers,
SKF’s split plummer block bearing
housings offer higher strength and
stiffness, as well as an improved bearing
seating. The result is longer service life,
longer relubrication intervals and better
heat dissipation. The casting has also
been designed to provide higher levels
of rigidity and heat transfer, as well as
easier assembly and dismantling.
Adaptor Sleeves
Supporting a full range of installation and removal
needs, Timken ® adaptor sleeves are used in
conjunction with a nut and locking device to mount
a tapered bore bearing onto a straight shaft using a
pulltype fit. Smaller size assemblies (17mm–200mm
shaft) commonly use simple nuts, whereas larger
assemblies (sizes >200mm) may use HMV hydraulic
nuts to assist in mounting.
Spherical Roller Bearings
NSK HPS Series
NSK HPS stands for ‘NSK’s High Performance Standard’.
Which is why our compact spherical roller bearings –
NSK HPS series – last twice as long as conventional ones,
even under the toughest of conditions. Even when limiting
speeds are exceeded by up to 20%, they continue to function
precisely and reliably.
Extremely pure Z-steel construction and improved internal design
characteristics are deciding factors in the increase of performance.
High precision finishing of the inner and outer rings, newly-developed
surface treatments of the rollers, super-finished raceway surfaces,
improved cage geometry and cage stiffness: these are just some of
the advantages of NSK´s wear resistant NSK HPS spherical roller
bearings. Downsizing and low maintenance costs are determining
factors in reducing the running costs of our customers’ plant.
NSK HPS spherical roller bearings do not just make a convincing
case through their compact construction but, by achieving double the
operating life of conventional bearings, they also significantly reduce
downtime and the associated costs. NSK HPS series bearings have
a temperature stability up to 200°C.
Why Self-Lube?
The original concept of this bearing type was to provide a fully
engineered solution including a housing and a shaft locking
mechanism. This included superior bearing sealing and sufficient
lubrication for life hence Self-Lube. Most applications do not require
re-lubrication but this feature was added as a later development for
Energy Efficient Bearings
Bearings
SKF’s Extended
Range of E2 Energy
Efficient Bearings
SKF E2 bearings are a family of performance
class bearings which have been specially
engineered and manufactured to reduce
frictional moment by 30% or more beyond
the already efficient SKF standard bearings.
This means that when compared to other
manufacturers’ bearings, the reduction
can be even more dramatic.
The new range now includes the most
common sizes for:
n Tapered roller bearings
n Spherical roller bearings
n Double row angular contact bearings
n Small and medium deep groove
ball bearings
Efficient
With potential application in many millions of machines – electric motors, pumps,
conveyors and other low-to-normal load applications – SKF E2 bearings have
the potential to make a significant contribution to global sustainability.
But the benefits go beyond energy savings. In most cases, SKF E2 bearings
run cooler compared to SKF standard bearings at equivalent loads and speeds.
They also reduce lubricant use and potentially extend the life of components
and the machine itself. The result is a reduced negative environmental impact.
Tapered Roller Bearings and Housed Units
Bearings
Tapered Roller
Bearings
Timken is a global leader in friction management technologies
and provides one of the most complete offerings of antifriction
bearings in the industry. Timken also offers the most extensive
line of tapered roller bearings available anywhere in the world.
These tapered roller bearings are uniquely designed to manage
both thrust and radial loads on rotating shafts and in housings.
Available in single, double and four-row configurations,
customised geometries and engineered surfaces can be applied
to these bearings to further enhance performance in demanding
applications. The tapered angles allow the bearing to handle
a combination of radial and thrust loads – the steeper the cup
angle, the greater the ability of the bearing to handle thrust loads.
Single-Row Tapered Roller Bearings
The most basic and widely used tapered bearing,
usually fitted as one of an opposing pair.
Double-Row Tapered Roller Bearings
With double cups and two single cones, these
are available in a variety of configurations for
general industrial and automotive applications.
Four-Row Tapered Roller Bearings
Combine the inherent high-load, radial/thrust
capacity and direct/indirect mounting variables
of tapered roller bearings into assemblies of
maximum load rating in minimum space.
Ball Rail Systems
Rexroth roller rail systems were specially developed for use in machine tools,
industrial robots and general machine construction applications calling for compact,
rolling-element linear motion guideways. They are available in various accuracy
classes, each with extremely high load capacity and high rigidity. Standard runner
blocks can also be supplied for special conditions of installation and use and for
special working environments. Wide Roller Rail Systems were developed to cater for
high moment loads and highest rigidity requirements. For heavy duty applications
there is a choice of Heavy Duty Roller Rail Systems.
Rexroth fabricates its guide rails and runner blocks with such high precision that
each individual component element can be replaced by another at any time. This
makes infinite combinations possible. Each element can be individually ordered and
separately stocked. Both sides of the guide rail can be used as reference edges.
Accessories can be simply attached to the ends of the runner block.
Automatic Lubricator
Make lubrication easy with the Simalube Automatic Lubricator! Failure to lubricate a
bearing correctly almost always leads to premature failure and high repair costs. But
lubrication can be a hassle. That’s why Simatec developed an advanced generation of
Simalube – an automatic single-point lubricator which has been proven millions of times.
88 Online Condition Monitoring
Bearings
Online Condition
Monitoring
Condition Monitoring is only as good as the data taken and the only way
of ensuring maximum plant uptime is to ensure the data is monitored
permanently. We offer customers the best system through our knowledge
of what’s out in the marketplace. The system is designed, installed and
commissioned so the customer gets permanent monitoring and can view
their data on-site or via an online portal, Machine WebWatch, which can
transmit alerts by SMS and email.
From here the customer can see how the machines are performing, via the configurable
screens, which can be as simple as a set of lights or as detailed as an analysis of the
defect and the corrective action required.
ERIKS has the largest team of condition monitoring personnel and monitors more critical
equipment than anyone else in the marketplace. We also have the experience to select the
attributes and alert levels specific to the application and to suit the customer’s requirements.
Machine WebWatch System
n Allows customers to go online to see how their machines are performing
n Sends out SMS or email alerts when an alarm is triggered
n Gives ERIKS technicians direct access to the system via a secure VPN connection
n Allows further analysis or alteration of the configuration without going on-site,
saving time and money
An example of this system has been installed at Revolvo – ERIKS’ bearing manufacturing
premises in Dudley – which is fully web-enabled and viewed via the internet portal, as well
as enabling remote analysis of the machine by ERIKS technicians if an alarm is triggered.
ERIKS monitors the grinding machine at Revolvo using IFM Octavis VSE 100 with
Hansford Sensors’ accelerometers, through an ERIKS-built converter.
Features of this specific system are:
n VSE100 has 8 digital inputs/outputs, two 4–20mA inputs, one 4–20mA output and
one logic output along with 30 internal variants (22 connected via SCADA)
n Non-volatile memory
n Spectral analysis
n OPC ethernet connection
n 4–20mA speed input
n Low cost
Benefits you could also share:
n Virtually seamless integration with site machinery and limitless configurability
n Non-volatile – Unit does not lose its programming when powered off
n Frequencies can be scrutinised or ignored depending on machine construction, for
example gear mesh can be ignored but gearmesh sidebands and harmonics analysed
n Can be connected to your SCADA system, allowing the information supplied to
be easily displayed locally or globally
n Alarms can be altered using the speed reference.
n Spectral information (harmonics of shaft speed for instance) can be tracked
n A four bearing solution is £000s cheaper than the nearest equivalent
