Driver’s Education Report: VIR By Brian Powell
Wow, What a weekend! The largest Carolinas event in history. Or at least as long
as I can remember. 238 participants from 25 different regions joined us at Virginia
International Raceway in Alton, VA. Drivers from up and down the east coast came in
for our 3 day event on November 18th- 20th. This weekend is always popular but this
weekend exceeded them all. Weather was cool but clear. Mornings did start out pretty
cold, but by mid-morning, the layers started coming off as temps warmed to mid-50’s
on Friday, rising to upper 60’s on Sunday.
Friday was our usual solo only day with drivers getting plenty of track time. When we
first started visiting VIR, Friday was an opportunity for instructors to learn the track
before having to instruct on Saturday and Sunday. It’s been so popular though, that
we’ve kept it on the schedule so more drivers can take advantage of the 3 day event.
By Saturday, students were checked in and ready to go sample VIR’s 3.27 mile course.
On Saturday, participants got to take family and friends out on the track as we offered
charity laps during the lunch hour. $350 was raised for Second Harvest Food Bank
of NC from the generous donations. The evening reception on Saturday provided everyone
the opportunity to swap racing stories and fish tales. We had a packed room
that evening in the VIR Pagoda, with OG Racing and Hendrick Porsche having donated
door prizes to award. The grand prize went to the driver who had attended the most
Carolinas Region DE’s this year. Vince Braswell was the winner having attended ALL
7 region DE’s. The festivities were capped off with the presentation of the Thomas J
Norby Award. This award is presented to an instructor from the Carolinas Region recognized
for their professionalism, expertise and dedication to the PCA Drivers Education
program. The 2011 recipient was a very surprised Jerry Kilcrease. Jerry has been a
regular instructor and makes many contributions behind the scenes from check out
rides to registration.
Next year looks like another great year. We’ll start off with our Winter DE Seminar in
late January. Look for more information to come. If you’re interested in Drivers Education
but don’t know where to start, this is the place. We’ll go over the DE program, walk
thru the requirements and answer any questions you may have.
