Surveys, Facebook, Club Race
and Passing the Torch
Surveys
Last year we restarted our Annual Carolinas
PCA Region Survey as a means to give you, our
members, a voice and to better know who you
are, what you want to do and how you think
things are going. While those phone calls,
emails and conversations at events are great
forms of input, this survey gives us an objective
measure of your views.
Doug Smith, Carolinas Region VP, has again
headed up the survey and he has made
tweaks to the survey based on your input.
Last year we had a great participation rate
(>300 members responded). This year we
would like to do better. Please take the 10
minutes needed to participate.
Facebook
We currently have 315 members on the Carolinas
Region PCA Facebook page. While there
are announcements about our regular Regional
events, there are other automotive events
announced and discussed.
This page is restricted, i.e. you have to ask to
join. That way we do not have to worry about
public comments or spam postings external to
the Club. To join, search on ‘Carolinas Region
- Porsche Club of America’. Join in on the fun!
Carolinas Region Club Race
Yes! The 2012 edition of the Carolinas Region
Club Race is on! This year we welcome a new
title sponsor, Hawk Performance Brakes. Accordingly,
the race this year will be known as
the ‘Hawk Carolinas Challenge’.
Our other sponsors are:
Autometrics / Foreign Cars Italia /
Renngruppe / McDaniels Porsche /
Carolina Orthopeadic / Martin Brothers
/ Renn-Link / Exclusive Motorwerks /
Pacific Institute / Robbie Strickland /
Chapter 10 Racing / North Shore / Rudtner
Racing
The event will commence on Thursday, 25
October with a Turn One Test-and-Tune, with
Club Race and DE Registrations and Tech
Inspections starting that afternoon. The will
be practice and two Fun Races on Friday
with a full race and DE schedule starting
Saturday morning.
If you are not racing or participating in the DE,
please come out and support your Region
and the event as a spectator. We have an
open paddock and everyone will be happy to
answer any questions you have.
ALMS at VIR
Many PCA members follow those other forms
of racing, i.e. the ones that turn left AND right.
Last year when we found out that Grand Am
would not return to VIR, a lot of you were disappointed,
as was I. But when I found out
that the ALMS was going to take its place
at VIR, the thought of the speed that the P1
prototypes would reach left me a bit giddy
(the Muscle Milk HPD ARX-03a lapped VIR
at 1:35.434 (123.352 mph) which beat the
previous record of 1:36.3 clocked by an ex-
Benetton F1 car in 2004).
Accordingly, plans were made post haste to attend.
As I have chronicled in this monthly article,
my son Cooper has been attending many PCA
events over the past couple of years. I have tried
to match the length of events, as well as distance,
to his level of endurance. He went with
me to ‘In Den Bergen’ this year, which entailed
a 3 hour ride to Waynesville. So I figured a 2
½ hour trip to VIR would be safe, knowing that
we would have to leave the race early (the race
start time was 2:30PM). So after buy off from
Mom, plans were made and tickets bought.
Cooper has always been a trooper when
travelling in the Cayenne, even though it
does not have a DVD player as we have in
the Family Truckster (aka Honda Odyssey).
He enjoys looking at the passing scenery,
singing songs and making astute observations
(‘Daddy, that man can’t hear you’). Put
it this way, he is better behaved than some
past adult travel companions ... and less
opinionated ... so far anyway.
Both Cooper and I had a great time. We met
up with Rob Purviance and his son, as well
as Bob and Nadine Saville, Hal Michael, Tom
Morgan and many other Carolinas Region
members. We walked the paddock and chatted
with the Flying Lizard Team. Cooper got
his Flying Lizard T-Shirt signed by all the drivers
and got a picture with Patrick Long and
Jörg Bergmeister. Both were very gracious
with their time and patience.
Top: Cooper and Dad arriving at VIR
Bottom: Cooper sharing a photo op with
Patrick Long and Jörg Bergmeister
Other highlights were Cooper getting his picture
taken with the Cooper Tire Girls and also
doing a touring lap of VIR (top speed was not
reported to Mom, but it was north of three
digits on the back straight). We also walked
over to the Ferrari Corral and took a few pictures
there also.
We settled in at the PorschePlatz for the beginning
of the race. Cooper was armed with
his newly acquired ear protection from the
Bass Pro Shop. He was clearly excited and
very focused. However, about 50 minutes into
the race I could tell he was starting to drag so
it was time to go. Within 2 minutes of getting
him into his car seat, he passed out. He slept
until Salisbury.
My Dad started taking me to races when
I was around 6 and I have always had fond
memories of those days. I am hoping to pass
on similar memories to Cooper. The next generation
starts now.
That’s it for this month. As always, if you have
any ideas, comments or feedback please feel
free to contact me at president@carolinas-pca.
com or (704) 906-0343.
In Den Bergen 2012
‘In Den Bergen’ continued its
strong year over year growth in
2012 with 142 registrants participating
in the fourth annual event on
August 10-12. It’s not a surprise. The low
key atmosphere of a People’s Choice Concours
and the beautiful setting in the mountains at The
Waynesville Inn Golf Resort and Spa results in a laid
back atmosphere for Porsche people to enjoy their cars.
What began as one person’s idea, Mountain Area member
Ron Becker, to share their passion for Porsche cars with the local
community and raise funds benefitting a local charity has firmly established
itself as one of the top events in the Carolinas Region and Zone 3.
The involvement of Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation adds to the event and
provides the Carolinas Region and Mountain Area, in particular, an opportunity to
give back to the community in which they live.
Sarge’s volunteers circulated with adoptable
pets during the event and put on
view its mini dog house collection box for
donations. “This is the fourth year that the
Carolinas PCA has promoted Sarge’s at
this event,” said David Butler, Mountain
Area Director and event chairman. Sarge’s
receives all proceeds from the raffle of donated
items as well as donations received
from the public and PCA entrants. With donations,
onsite fund raising activities and
the Carolinas PCA matching charitable
donation, the event raised $3500.00 for
Sarge’s. A check was presented to Gary
Smith, President of the Board for Sarge’s
on August 30. “It’s a pleasure to present
Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation a check
to support the services they provide”, said
Butler.
“Sarge’s is very grateful to the Carolinas
PCA, Mountain Area for raising this money
to help with the expenses involved in the
rescue of animals from the local shelter,”
said Smith.”In August, Sarge’s adopted out
49 dogs and cats. This ties the record for
the best August ever (set last year). Plus
we transported 54 dogs to Northeast rescue
shelters where they are more rapidly
adopted. The donation will go a long way to
provide needed medical treatment and fuel
for transports.”
This year’s ‘In Den Bergen’ registrants displayed
74 Porsche cars on the first fairway
of the Carolinas course at The Waynesville
Inn. Event registrants included PCA members
from Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina,
South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
The People’s Choice Concours winner
was Chip Perry of Blowing Rock, NC with his
beautiful 1958 Meissen Blue 356A Speedster.
Class winners are listed on this page.
‘In Den Bergen’ would not be possible
without our sponsors’ support! Luckily,
IDB continues to enjoy strong sponsor relationships,
including the ongoing support
of Pirelli Tires, The Waynesville Inn Golf Resort
and Spa, and TRG (The Racers Group).
Please show your appreciation for their
contributions at your first opportunity.
IDB 2012 began on Friday afternoon with a golf tournament that included sixteen participants.
Some followed the lead of Matt Motteler and enjoyed a drive of the ‘Tail of the
Dragon’ while others enjoyed circuitous routes to Waynesville via beautiful back country
mountain roads. Registration was fun with friends meeting, having a drink and making
plans for dinner later in the evening. Saturday morning found early risers in the parking lot
getting their cars ready for the concours and others enjoying the buffet breakfast.
We began concours placement promptly at 10:00 a.m. and all seven classes of cars were
in place thirty-five minutes later. What a beautiful sight. Concours registrant’s assistance
really helped the team accomplish their goal of prompt and orderly placement. Everyone
settled in enjoying the cars and adoptable pets touring the grounds with Sarge’s volunteers.
Lunch was a treat, especially with the sun breaking through the clouds chasing away the
earlier threat of rain. We removed cars from the course beginning at 2:00 p.m. and staged
for the Parade of Porsches through downtown Waynesville at 2:30 p.m. Afterwards was a
time for drives in the country or a lazy afternoon on the veranda of the Inn.
The evening reception began at 5:00 p.m. and featured tastings of Adobe Road wine served
by Martin Steger (TRG) and beer donated by Heinzelmannchen Brewery with Dieter Kuhn
serving three different draft beers. This was the first year we’ve included a beer tasting at
IDB and Heinzelmannchen Brewery and Dieter were a big hit with the group.
The Awards Banquet began at 6:30 p.m. After a nice dinner David recognized the planning
team, sponsors and donations to the event. Martin Steger spoke about the racing activities
at TRG. Following Martin was our featured speaker, Stan Amerson, Porsche Cars North
America, After Sales Manager. Stan spoke about the new Porsche Headquarters facility
being built in Atlanta and the continuing upgrade to Porsche technician’s certification processes.
Stan also spoke about his enjoying the event and being able to reconnect with old
friends. Stan commented afterwards that he was, “honored to have been with a group of
People that truly define Porsche’s Passion”. Awards for the event were distributed, along
with a drawing to determine Raffle winners and Silent Auction results were announced. David
closed the banquet agenda by thanking everyone for their participation, their donations
to Sarge’s, and to be safe on their return home.
Carolinas Mountain Area members Ron Becker, David Butler, Joe Esposito, Mario de Francisco,
Bob Herrmann, Scott Jordan, Dick Maybach and Matthew Pohsweg served on the IDB
2012 planning team. In addition, Van Becker, Jeff Scott, Doug Smith, Travis Penland and
Jim Peterson served in a support capacity and their assistance is appreciated very much.
Response was overwhelmingly positive again this year. Many participants commented on
the laid back atmosphere, the beautiful location and stunning display of the cars on the golf
course with mountains serving as a backdrop. The dates of August 9-11, 2013 are already
on the calendar for next year; make plans now to join us.
Autocross:
Don’t Always Believe
The Weather Forecast.
By Sean Steinbrueck
Sunday Sept. 16, was a strange day. This
would be the first time, that I can remember
having a potential rainout at an Autocross
event. Cari and I have been doing Autocross
for 4 years now. Approximately 22 events.
Up until today, we had never had it rain at
one of our events.
At 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning the Doppler
Radar showed it was raining down at Charlotte
Knights Stadium, and the weather
forecast was 40-50% rain all day. Neither
of us really wanted to putt-putt around in
the rain. So we made the decision to leave
the car and trailer at home, and just bring
all the timing equipment down and run the
event. Rain or shine. Right
By the time we got there at 7:00 a.m. the
rain stopped. Checking the weather again
still showed 40-50% rain. At about 8:00
a.m. the sky was almost all clear. Weather
forecast still showed 40-50% rain all day.
Another hour goes by, and we are getting
ready to start the event. Still clear sky, and
all of a sudden weather forecast shows
0% chance for the next 3 hours. BUT 60%
chance around 1 pm.
So, now Cari and I have to make a decision.
Does one of us run back home and
get the car & trailer or not We both come
to the same conclusion & Cari takes off to
get the Car, while I start running the event.
Now, we are in a time crunch. We know it’s
almost certainly going to rain in the afternoon.
So I push to get as many Dry runs for
everyone as possible before lunch.
Knock on wood, we did okay. Everyone
got 5 runs in before lunch. Never before
have we had an event where we got both
run groups 5 runs, BEFORE lunch. And as
luck would have it, just after we finished
lunch and started the event back up, the
rain came. Unfortunately, we didn’t have
enough Umbrellas for the corner workers,
and they were getting soaked. So, we
called it a day after the first group was going
on their 7th run.
Everyone seemed pretty positive that we
made the best of a potential crummy day.
Getting 5 dry runs finished on a day that began
with rain and ended with rain, wasn’t
too bad.
A few interesting notes for this event:
We had a new couple join the autocross
this weekend. Joan Carney and her husband
Kevin brought out their Red Cayman
S. Since this was Joan’s First Autocross,
Walter was in the car coaching as she navigated
the course. The First Lap, she was
taking it easy. Then she decided to let Walter
driver her car, with her as a passenger,
to get a better feel for the course and to
see what her car was capable of. He threw
down a very fast lap time of 52.5 seconds.
After they switched back, on her very next
run she dropped 13 seconds off her previous
lap. By the end of the day, she dropped
30 seconds from her first run. Outstanding.
The best part was the grin she had on her
face after each run. That is what Autocross
is all about.
Wayne Capwell, Ken Clayton and Andy Rutledge
were dead set on breaking my FTD
winning streak this year. Wayne set the bar
almost immediately, with a 49.465 on his
2nd lap. Ken then one-upped Wayne with
a 49.058.
On Wayne’s last “DRY” run, he was able to
knock a little more time off and finish with
a 49.014, which again, appeared to be the
Fastest Time of the Day.
Unfortunately, for Wayne, there was one
driver who was also gunning for FTD. Gregg
Henderson joined our autocross event for
the first time in his “Very Well Prepped”
Miata and finished the day with a blistering
48.966. Taking the Men’s Fastest Time of
the Day (FTD).
…Oh Yea…
Cari wound up making it back with our car
and trailer around 11:00. We unloaded
quickly and she got in line to grab a few runs
before the run group switched. Neither of
us had much of an idea of the course layout
because of all the chaos in the morning.
But, we each managed to squeeze in 3 dry
laps before the sky fell.
Cari pushed hard enough to get down to a
52.132, in just 3 laps, and secured the ladies
FTD... “Nice job, Honey.”
I wasn’t so fortunate. My morning wasn’t
going well to start, because of the stress
of a potential wet event, trying to get the
event setup quickly, trying to get everyone
as many runs as we could before the rain,
“what time was the pizza coming”, would it
get here before it rained, leaving the car at
home (Why did I do that), and of course
hoping Cari remembered how to hook up
the trailer correctly while being in a hurry to
get back. My mind just wasn’t in it. I DNF’d
my first two runs. Then on my 3rd run, I got
a 50 sec lap but, + 1 cone which came out
to 52.726. Uggg.
I wished I could have gotten more runs,
because, I started to settle down after the
3rd run. And get my head in the game. But,
alas, it was my own stupid fault for leaving
the car at home.
So, the moral of the story is; Bring your
Car. RAIN OR SHINE. Because, the weather
forecast is not always accurate. Actually,
it’s usually wrong, about 75% of the time.
Man, I wish I could work where I only had
to be right 25% of the time, and still keep
my job.
Executive
Council
Nominations
The nominating committee for Carolina’s
Region executive committee officers
for 2013-14 has completed its
work and hereby presents the following
slate of candidates to the membership:
As past president, Harvey Yancey will
also serve on the executive committee
during this term.
Voting will take place on our website or
by using the ballot on the next page.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve
the club as members of the nominating
committee.
- For President,
Doug Smith
I’m Doug Smith and I’d
like to introduce myself as
the candidate for Region
President in the upcoming
election. I joined the club
in 2008 and promptly attended my first
Mountain Area meeting and scheduled my
first PCA Driver’s Ed event. I also signed up
for the Fall Tour 2008 and my wife, Ro, and
I had a great drive and met more members
and friends. Before I knew it, I joined the
Sommerfest (Porschefest) 2009 planning
committee and had begun my path down
the slippery slope of club participation. I
joined the region board as a staff member
The voting cut-off date
is November 10th.
in 2009 and joined the executive committee
as Vice President in 2010. I have
worked on the Region’s member survey the
past few years and worked with a group of
members to help plan and facilitate the
new “opt-out” policy for the mailed copy of
Tobacco Roads - which has the potential to
significantly reduce the club’s largest single
line item expense. I’ve quickly realized that
club participation returns what you’re willing
to put into it - and for me, it’s been tremendous
fun, a bit of hard work, and most
importantly I’ve met lot’s of new friends. In
the daytime, I work for IBM from my home
office in Black Mountain where we leverage
vast amounts of marketing data, advanced
analytic techniques, and data mining to
help IBM deliver the best products and services
to our clients. I feel honored to be
considered for this important role and I’ll do
my best to serve the club’s best interests
and its members. I look forward to meeting
you at our next club event and I’d appreciate
your support in the upcoming election.
- For Vice-President,
Matt Pohsweg
As an introduction, I’m
Matt Pohsweg, and I’ve
been nominated for the
position of Vice-President,
having served as Secretary
for these past 2 years. My PCA membership
goes back to the early 1990’s, originally as
a member of the Peachstate Region, before
moving to North Carolina, and reside in the
Mountain Area. I had the opportunity to join
the Planning Teams for Porschefest 2009 &
2010, and In den Bergen for the past number
of years. As Secretary, I chaired the Bylaws
Re-write Committee, which undertook
the task of incorporating the foundation
of the National PCA bylaws, reflecting the
uniqueness of the Carolinas Region organizational
structure with 8 geographic areas,
and complying with applicable NC Statute
governance. The rewritten Bylaws were effective
7/1/2012, and I’m continuing to
chair the Committee, with the goal of re-writing
the Region’s Policy & Procedures. I feel
it an honor and privilege to be nominated
to this position, feel fortunate to have met
so many members already, the establishment
of new friendships, and look forward to
meeting you at future events. Please vote in
the upcoming election.
participating in PCA events
since 2000, a member since 2002, and
have been active in the Carolinas Region for
the past 10 years. I have assisted with hosting
2 Regional holiday parties and the 2005
Spring Tour along with numerous other area
drives, autocross events and other PCA related
functions within the Triad Area. In 2004,
I was bitten by the “autocross” bug and became
an avid competitor and since 2004
have missed only one autocross event.
In June, 2007, I became Goodie Store
Chair and joined the Region Board. Since
becoming a board member, I have not
missed a Board meeting. As Goodie Store
Chair, we have steadily increased the sales
volume and service to the PCA members.
In 2009, I started the Triad Area’s “Girls in
Porsches” (GIP) group. GIP’s have monthly
meetings with the purpose of having fun
while promoting PCA club activities along
with the opportunity to provide support to
local charities. I also served on the Bylaws
Committee (2010-2011) during the re-write
and approval process of the Carolinas Region
Bylaws and continue on the committee
for the purpose of re-writing the Region’s
Policy and Procedures.
It is an honor and a privilege to be nominated
as secretary. I am passionate about the
club and have a strong desire to continue
to contribute. Ballots are now out. Please
vote. Thank you for your support.
Driver’s Education Update
by Brian Powell
And for Desert
If our earlier trips to CMP and AMP were the appetizer and salad, then this month we finished off the entree. We had
102 drivers join us at Carolina Motorsports Park over the September 8-9 weekend to enjoy the fall Drivers Education
event. While Saturday was typical summer weather with a late afternoon shower, Sunday was a perfect fall day to enjoy
outdoors at the track. We had 5 drivers signed off for the solo group with Troy Anderson, Paul Lueskow, John Marshall,
Ben Mucci and Fernando Pena all getting their check out ride to advance to the White group. These drivers have had
several weekends of in-car and classroom instruction; having demonstrated the knowledge and skills required to advance.
So for your choice of deserts, registration is open for both of our upcoming dates. On October 27-28th, we will hold
Drivers Education in conjunction with the Hawk Carolinas Challenge. DE Solo/Instructor and DE Student run groups
will join the weekend’s activities, sharing the schedule with the Sprint and Enduro races. With the races, car show,
karting and other festivities, there’s something for everyone at Carolina Motorsports Park. While it may be a few days
before Halloween, I’m sure there will be some ghosts and goblins about.
Saving the best for last, we’ll be returning to Virginia International Raceway on November 16th-18th for our 3-day
season finale. This is the largest Carolinas Region event by far. Last year we hosted over 230 drivers from Florida
to Massachusetts. VIR is a fun, historic facility hidden away outside Danville, Virginia, although most folks would call
Milton, NC the real address of the facility. We drive the Full Course for the event, which has 17 turns and lots of elevation
changes spread out across the 3.27 mile track. In our typical format, Saturday and Sunday will offer student
and solo groups, while Friday is a solo-only day. We’ll
gather on Saturday evening for the year end reception,
enjoying food and drink to put the wraps on another
great DE year.
Greetings to all from Hickory!
We had another very good meeting with 24 in attendance. We had
two 1st time members in attendance, Reg Williams, who owns a 2007
GT3 and Mike Sigmon who owns a 06 Carrera S 997. Our 50/50
drawing raised $45.00 for the Hickory Soup Kitchen in Hickory. Our
monthly door prize was a PCA T shirt awarded to Bryson Kiser.
We have planned a Drive and Dine for November 3rd at the Gable
Haus B&B in Linville, owned by a PCA member. See www.gablehausinn.com
for a preview. The plan is to leave Porsche of Hickory at
2PM. Please see the advertisement in this month’s Tobacco Roads.
Several of our area members participated on the recent DE at Kershaw,
SC. Michael Vottorio shared his experience at CMP Drivers Education,
along with an on track video. We discussed the advantages
and dangers of Drivers Ed and Encouraged participation in the Autocross
as an alternative drivers experience.
We had 5 cars and 8 people on our Drive and Dine. Mark and Kim
came all the way from Spartanburg SC, Cliff and Fariba came Mooresville.
We started at Porsche of Hickory and took back roads to Blowing
Rock. Since the ladies wanted to spend some time there our trip to
Wilkesboro was shortened.
Heads up: the Goodie Store will be in Hickory in October, so bring your
check books!
This will be Sadie and Jerry’s last year of running the Goodie store,
and we do not know when it will come again so make sure to get what
you want now.
Enjoy the ride,
Mountain Area By David Butler
Meeting: First Saturday of the month at 10:00am
Harmony Motors, 621 Brevard Road, Asheville, NC
Check monthly area report for location changes.
Contact David Butler, Area Director
mountain-ad@ carolinas-pca.com (828) 252-1752
The Mountain Area meeting on September 1 began in north Asheville
for a planned drive over area mountain roads. After IDB concours preparation
on my C2S and planning and closeout activities, I just wanted to
get out on the road and enjoy my car. I was joined by thirteen members
in nine cars who seemed to have the same idea.
We began the day traveling north on Elk Mountain Scenic Hwy. This
route begins less than a mile off Merrimon Avenue, an immediate transition
from neighborhood to mountain roads. It was a welcome surprise
for those not familiar with the north Asheville area. This led us up where
we approached the Blue Ridge Parkway but just short of the BRP we
went back down into the valley towards Barnardsville. After a run west
on I-26 and US 19N towards Burnsville we turned onto US 19W North.
This is an interesting and fun drive with roads tracing beside creeks,
through valleys and beautiful mountain roads. Lots of sweeping turns
as well as tight turns sweeping up and down as you go through the
mountains. US 19W North intersects I-26 in TN where we began our
drive back to Asheville. While not as interesting a drive it sure is beautiful
and relaxing coming over the mountains from TN to NC on a pretty
sunny day.
We stopped at the TN welcome center for a break. A that point a few
went on to Asheville and others stopped and enjoyed lunch in Weaverville
at the Jack of Hearts.
Our next meeting is on October 6 at 2:00 p.m. until 4 p.m. Perry Stewart
is hosting a Wine and Cheese Social and presenting a Porsche
Heritage presentation. Hopefully the wine and cheese might interest
spouses and the presentation is to show why most of us have such a
passion for Porsches. RSVP requested, please see the Calendar on the
Carolinas website for location and RSVP details.
Also, I’ve sent information out to the Mountain Area and Area Directors
for the “Saluting our Veterans” car show on Saturday November 3
(10am-2pm) on the grounds of the VA Hospital in Asheville. Please support
this event; it benefits local veterans and their children. Entrance
fee is $10 plus one unwrapped toy. The organizers are presenting an
award for the Best Represented Car Club. With Mountain and possibly
Hickory and Upstate members participating, we could make a real impact
at this event.
Hope to see you at a future event.
On Saturday, Sept 1 a group from Sandhills linked up with a couple
of Triangle Area guys at Pic-N-Pig BBQ in Carthage for lunch. We
had a surprise guest join us… a “barn find” 1960 356 Super
Cab. It is owned by Larry Wilson and was on its way to his shop in
Florida for complete restoration. Larry is a collector and successful
vintage racer from Carolinas Region. The plan for this numbers
matching 356 is to compete at the Amelia Island Concours next
March.... an aggressive schedule! Thanks to Steve Gaddy for arranging
the logistics to show it to us.
We continue to add a couple new members a month to our Area
roster. The next dinner meeting is Sept 25 at Theos Taverina in
the Village of Pinehurst. We are trying some new dinner meeting
venues and members seem to like the variety, Thanks to Larry and
Deloris Lassiter for arranging this months dinner meeting. Stay
tuned to our blog at www.sandhillsporsches.tumblr.com for next
months venue.
On November 3 we have tech session at RTR Racing in Aberdeen.
They will demonstrate a chassis dyno using my GT3 and a
couple of members cars. Just across the driveway is Vintage and
Modern European Service. Owner Rick Mirabito will have an open
house for us after the dyno exercises.
The Triad Area rotated back to Big Shotz Tavern in Clemmons for
the September 18th monthly meeting and we had 48 members
and guest attend. We were pleased to see first time attendee Ann
Craven (B.J.’s wife) along with Triad Area member Eugene Reaves
(home for a visit from his job in China) at our meeting. The group
sang Happy Birthday to Charles Branch who celebrated a birthday
in September and treated Charles to a free Birthday desert. We
also recognized Triad members Dave and Fran Lumpkin (35 years)
and Mark Dole (10 years) on their PCA membership anniversaries.
Will Taylor passed along information on a “Cars for a Cause” charity
sports car event and Sue Burkett thanked those PCA members
that provided support during her recent surgery and recovery. Sadie
was there with the Goodie Store and Ron Reed displayed current
photographs on the overhead. Fred Baumann also provided
overhead photographs taken at a Porsche collector’s shop during a
recent trip to California. Serge Ayache was the lucky ticket holder
when Tanya Reed drew his ticket from the 50/50 split the pot entries.
Thanks to all for attending.
Past triad area hosted events:
Annual Swap Meet: Saturday, September 1st: The Triad Area
hosted the annual swap meet at the RennGruppe facility in Lexington,
NC, from 8am until around noon. The Triad area provided free
doughnuts and coffee for those members and guest that came out.
Unfortunately there was not a lot of participation from the membership
but we did have eight swappers come out early to set up and
displaying their goods. During the morning we probably had 30
members and guest drop by from all over the Carolinas Region and
I want to thank those folks for supporting the event.
Up coming triad area hosted events:
September Review
Triangle Area BBQ Run to Carthage – On Saturday, September 1st,
we had a Triangle Area BBQ Run after the Waverly Place Car Show in
Cary. We visited out favorite BBQ place (the Pik ‘n Pig) in Carthage
and met up with our friends from the Sandhills Area of the Carolinas
Region. They brought with them a friend who had just picked up
a 356 that had been sitting in a garage since the 1960s that he
planned to restore and show at Amelia Island next year. The drive
was beautiful and sunny, and the attendees had a great time. Special
thanks to Martin Salas for once again leading us on some awesome
back country roads to Carthage.
ALMS at VIR – A true high point of the month was the American Le
Mans Series race at VIR, September 12-15 at Virginia International
Raceway in Alton, VA. The weather was perfect and I spent two days
there, witnessing the practice sessions on Friday and the main event – Bob
October 2012 - Page 25
on Saturday afternoon. It was amazing to meet the drivers of the
Flying Lizard GT race team at the PorschePlatz hosted by the Blue
Ridge Region PCA. I also had the opportunity to join dozens of other
PCA members on parade laps just prior to the race on Saturday. Any
opportunity to drive that amazing road course is an amazing experience.
The best part about attending a professional race at VIR
is that the drivers and teams are at an arm’s length from you at
given time, and you get to see and feel what they’re experiencing
first hand. The weather couldn’t have been better, and I enjoyed
every moment. Several friends/PCA members of Carolinas Region
and Hurricane region were there with me, and we had two great days
at the track. Based on the drivers’ comments and the feedback
from Track Director, Kerrigan Smith, the ALMS will return again in
2013. I hope you’ll mark the dates in your calendar when they’re
announced. It’s well worth your time and a truly unique experience.
Carolinas Region Autocross Event at Charlotte Knights Stadium – I
participated in the Carolinas Region’s Autocross event on Sunday,
September 16th. I’m always impressed by the great people who participate,
the quality of the drivers, as well as the how well the event
is administered every time. This is my 3rd event this year and my
second year participating in the Carolinas Region’s Autocross Series,
and I’ve managed to win 2nd place in my class (P05) twice. While
it’s a 2.5 hour drive to the event from the Cary/Apex area, I wouldn’t
miss it. The time flies by because every run is so exciting, and I also
get to participate in running the event. Every driver is asked to work
the flag stations or the paddock area, and it really makes you feel
like a key contributor to the fun. The cars are also amazing to watch
as they fly through the course. If you’ve never participated before, I
strongly encourage you to do so in the future. The next event is listed
above and it takes place at the Greensboro Coliseum, only 1.5 hours
from the Raleigh area. It costs very little, and lunch is provided for
this 8am to 2pm event.
Lastly, for you track junkies, I hope you’ll register for the Carolinas
Region PCA Drivers Ed at VIR, November 16-18. Registration is open
now at www.clubregistration.net, and this event fills up quickly. If you
want more information about drivers ed events and what you can
expect, please give me or Brian Powell (Track Committee Co-Chair) a
call or send us an e-mail. Brian’s email is driversed@carolinas-pca.
com.
That’s if for this month. I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming
event. Please note that I will be away at the Chump Car Southeastern
Championship at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on October 13th,
racing with my team. But, I encourage you to attend either the autocross
event or the tech session at Leith that weekend (if you’re not
also going to be at the Chump Car race).
Have a great month, everyone.

Upstate Area By John Budinich
Meeting: First Monday of the month at 6:30pm
Quaker Steak & Lube, 10 Chrome Drive
Greenville, SC
Contact John Budinich, Area Director
upstate-ad@ carolinas-pca.com (864) 915-0011
Our September 10th meeting was very well attended with just over
40 members present. The 21 Porsches lined up in the parking
lot drew a great deal of attention. The Upstate Area continues it’s
growth trend as we added 7 new members / family members last
month alone. As the meeting date was changed due to a conflict
with Labor Day, Quaker Steak & Lube had us in a different room.
While this room was bigger and had a few other amenities in its
favor, it was a bit noisy. We should be back in our normal meeting
room going forward.
John Babinski, Driver’s Education Committee Co-Chair, reported on
the Driver’s Education event held at Carolina Motorsports Park on
9/8-9. John said the event was very well attended with over 100
participants, the weather was perfect and a number of blue group
drivers showed they are ready to move up to the next group. Those
in attendance are looking forward to the “Main Event” on 11/16 –
18 at Virginia International Raceway.
Robert Andrews gave an update on his participation at In Den Bergen.
He said the weather was ideal, there was a large turnout of
fantastic Porsches and the event was extremely well run. Congratulations
to David Butler and the Mountain Area members who put
on a great event every year. If you missed this year’s event, make
sure to put it on your 2013 calendar. In addition to the news of the
event, Robert also shared some other news - he got engaged while
at the event. Congratulations to Robert and his bride to be, Sandy
Sheller.
Kelle and John Corvin announced they will once again be hosting
the Upstate Area Holiday Party at their house in Greer, SC. The date
for the party is Saturday, December 15th. The party will follow the
same format as previous years, a night of friends, fun and our annual
charity auction. An email with the details for this event will be
sent out as soon as they are finalized. I will also include the details
in next month’s Area Report in TR.
Two other items of note were discussed at the September meeting.
An informal group is forming to share information and have technical
discussions regarding the older 911. This group is made up of
members who enjoy working on their own vehicles and will focus
on the air-cooled, non-computer assisted models. If you are interested
in participating in this group, send me a note and I can hook
you up or come to the October meeting and join their discussion
group. Finally, we are starting to plan a Fall Drive & Dine for either
late October or early November. It was suggested that we head to a
great, authentic German restaurant, Gasthaus Zur Elle in Prosperity,
SC. Once we find a “Porsche Friendly” route from the Greenville
area to Prosperity, we will send out the details.
As a reminder, there are some major events coming up over the
next few months. I encourage all members to check these out and
register as soon as possible. These include: 9/23 - Fall Tour in Banner
Elk, NC; 10/19-21 - EURO Auto Festival at the BMW Zentrum
in Greer, SC; 11/16-18 - Driver’s Ed at VIR and 12/1 – Regional
Holiday Party, Crown Plaza Hotel, Hickory, NC. Look for complete
details of these and other events in Tobacco Roads or on the Carolinas
Region web site.
