Cont from pg 1 Dr. Hunter
December 10, 1942,
Dr. Hunter sent letter to Dan
Evans stating that he is in
Africa and is well. He also says
that he has had all the
traveling he wants for a
lifetime.
Mrs. C. H. Hottle, a neighbor
in Lebo, received the following
letter from Dr. Hunter that was
written March 11, 1943.
Dear Friends,
Well, yesterday your
Christmas card arrived and
thought that you would be
interested to know just when
the card arrived. … Get to
writing letters and get to
wondering who I have
forgotten to write to. Have
written one or two to Dan
Evans and hope that he put
them in the paper, for that is
the easiest way to write to the
whole bunch there at home.
This is a very foggy day
around here. Has been so
dripping that I thought it was
really going to rain. It is about
ten thirty and think that the fog
is about to raise a bit. We have
had only about three foggy
mornings since we have been
here. Haven’t had a lot of rain
lately and so think that the
rainy season must be over. The
natives all say so and say also
that the winter season won’t
last much longer. Of course,
the gardens are all in and so
are the oats. So guess that the
winters are never very severe
around here. Think that the
climate here is about like that
of Calif. that is lower Calif. If
they had the water here they
could raise about anything and
a lot of it. Water is really scarce.
The other day I was back in the
mountains about a hundred
miles and saw only one thing
that I would call a river. It was
about the size of that river
north of Lebo there or not as
large really. The water was
brownish yellow. Then I did see
three or four streams that were
not even as big as Frog Creek in
the dry season. Guess that the
one reason for the lack of water
in them is the lack of snow up in
the mountains and another is
that they do ditch some of it off
for irrigation.
How is that old ping pong eye
of yours doing? I don’t do a lot of
playing in this country, but did a
lot in England as we had a good
table right in our dining hall.
Here, we eat out in the open, so
there is no dining hall. ….Play
volleyball about every evening
from after supper til dark. Have
a pretty good time at that and
think that is it is very good
recreation.
Right now we have one of the
companies going through the
line here and we are giving them
a shot in the left arm and read
the smallpox vaccination that
were given a week ago.
Vaccinating soldiers seems to
be quite an army pastime
according to the soldiers. About
every time that they turn around,
they get a vaccination for something.
Right now, we are in the
process of giving them a
vaccination once a week for
three weeks and that is really
quite a job, also it is rather
amusing, for some of these big
old boys fall away from the
needle like they were being
killed. Some of them get so
tense that they are really making
a terrible face and it is always
amusing just to delay a minute
on them and let them get
calmed down a bit. After they
leave the dispensary this
morning, they are headed over
to the dental dispensary to get
their teeth checked for possible
need of care. Think that most of
these men are getting a lot
better care than they ever had
before, but to hear them beef
around here, one would think
that they are terribly mistreated.
Yesterday was Sunday and I
was invited out to dinner to a
Fr. home. They really believe in
serving the food around those
places. They have more
courses than a cat has lives.
Took exactly two and half
hours to get through with the
meal, then we went for a walk.
That is about the only
pastime that these folks have
as there is no gas for private
use and the only other thing is
to go to a movie. Don’t think
that these folks in this country
are much movie enthusiasts
as the one at home. Then last
night I went down to the Red
Cross threatre and we had a
nice orchestra for about half
an hour - military and then we
saw a picture called ―Ten Men
From WestPoint‖. After that
there was a Technicolor
Mickymouse affair about
increased war production. All
in all it was a very good
program. This threatre is a
very real one and very large
that the Red Cross has taken
over. It is surprising to know
how soft the seats are in it and
how modern it looks. Most of
the buildings in this town are
of the Spanish type and are
clay covered. Some of the
newer ones are very good
looking.
Think that I am about as
crazy to read the Fr paper
every morning as I was to read
the sports there at home. The
war news is particularly good
at this time and guess that is
just like following a pennant
winner there in the baseball
leagues there at home. Rostov
passed out of the Germans
hands yesterday. I lost a two
dollar bet on that one as I had
bet that it would fall before
two days ago.
Suspect that the R.R. traffic
is still pretty heavy there and
probably a lot heavier that it
was before I left. I never saw
so much stuff as comes in on
one of those victory
freighters. …
Sincerely, Dr. Hunter.
WITH YOUR CHRONIC
HEALTH CONDITION
The Coffey County Health
Department is offering the
"Kansas Optimizing Health
Program" (KOHP) developed
by Stanford University. This
highly motivational interactive
workshop series offers
strategies for learning to cope
with various chronic health
conditions (arthritis, diabetes,
high blood pressure, anxiety,
heart disease, chronic pain,
ect.) Participants will learn
ways to improve everyday
ways to deal with and reduce
pain and fatigue, discover
better nutrition and exercise
choices, communication skills
