A p r i l 1 , 2 0 1 4 IS MY CHILD READY? by Theresa Whalen The Lebo Light P a g e 6 Lebo Kindergarten Round Up will be held on April 11 from 9:00— 10 :00 a.m. This event is for children, and their parents, who will be 5 on or before August 31, 2014 and are planning to attend school in the 2014 -2015 school year. Please contact Mrs. Linsey, in the office, for more information at 620.256.6161. I read this announcement, in the school newsletter, with both excitement and fear. Our baby will be eligible to start Kindergarten in the Fall! It is hard to believe just how quickly 5 years can fly by. It seems like just yesterday we were encouraging her to take her first steps and say her first words. She is ready....or is she? I went right to the source to find out if, in fact, our little girl is ready for Kindergarten. I met with Mrs. Ramirez, the Kindergarten teacher at Lebo Elementary, in March. We had a wonderful conversation about the things she looks for as children enter her classroom. In addition, we discussed how parents can better prepare themselves for entering Kindergarten. I asked her what skills she looks for as children enter her classroom, what should my child be able to do? Gross Motor (large muscle): Skipping Hopping Maneuvering Climbing Equipment Fine Motor (small muscle): Write about 50% of letters Write first name Draw basic shapes Cut simple shapes/lines Language Skills: Asking 'W' questions (who, what, when, where & why) Taking turns in conversation Tenses (past, present & future) Pronouns Literacy Skills: Letter recognition/sounds Book handling skills Read to your child, ask questions about the story Cognitive Skills: Number recognition Count objects to 10 Shape recognition Colors Social-Emotional Skills: Listening Following Directions Label emotions & handle emotions Opportunities to socialize with peers Health: Current Physical Up to date immunizations State birth certificate Parents: Give your child responsibilities at home. Allow your child to be independent in dressing skills. Get to know the school. Ask questions of the teacher. Attend Kindergarten Round Up with your child. Kindergarten is coming, ready or not. Jerry Wayne DeForest, 70, of Baxter Springs, Ks. and a former Lebo resident, passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014. He was born on February 3, 1944 in Ottumwa, Ks to Frances and Bertha Dyste DeForest. Jerry graduated from Lebo High School in 1962 and furthered his education at Emporia State University. Jerry is survived by his twin sister, Judy Shoemaker and husband, Jack of Baxter Springs, Ks.; two brothers, Glen DeForest of Maple Hill and Edward DeForest of Lebo. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Harry, Forrest James, Harold, and Norman DeForest. Kristen Lea Gilliland, 32, of Osage City, Ks passed away March 7, 2014. She was born June 20, 1981 in Emporia, Ks. To David L. and Linda K. Standiferd Gilliland. She graduated from Osage City High School in 1999. She is survived by her mother and step father, Linda and Tom Fancher of Osage City; a brother, Jason Gilliland and wife Amy of Osage City; and her maternal grandmother, Betty Standiferd of Lebo. She was preceded in death by her father, David Gilliland; her maternal grandfather, Paul Standiferd; and her paternal grandparents, Rodney and Reta Gilliland. We wish to extend our sincere thanks for all the kindnesses shown our family at the time of Kristine’s untimely death. A p r i l 1 , 2 0 1 4 The Lebo Light P a g e 7 BLUE RIBBON 4-H CLUB’S MARCH MEETING BY Lauren Williams, Club reporter The regular monthly meeting of the Blue Ribbon 4-H Club was held on March 12, 2014 at the Lebo United Methodist Church. The meeting was called to order by Junior Vice President, Audrey Durst. Flag leaders, Emma & Abbi Slead lead the club in reciting the flag salute and 4-H pledge. Secretary, Sarah Sergeant recorded roll call which was answered by ―Name a county in Kansas, but not the one you live in?‖ The February minutes were read by the Secretary. A Thank You card from the Lebo Food Pantry was read. Junior Treasurer, Blayne Linsey gave the Treasurer’s Report. Reporter, Lauren Williams gave the reporter’s report. Leaders’ reports were given by Dawn Williams and Karen Sergeant. Karen reminded everyone about beef weigh in on March 15 @ BVC from 8-10. She also reminded everyone about the county wide poultry meeting and the county wide swine meeting. She encouraged anyone interested in livestock judging to attend a beef judging contest on March 18 @ BVC at 6:00. Dawn congratulated the club on receiving top blue on Model Meeting at 4-H days. She shared with the club how much food was collected for the Neighbor to Neighbor food drive on March 8 th for the March community service project. She also asked the club to be thinking about a fair theme. Vickie Wolford would like all ideas by March 18 th . The extension office is looking for camp counselors. Dawn finished with informing the club of a favorite foods clinic on April 16 th at 5:30 in the courthouse basement. There was no old business. For new business the club voted to purchase new club t-shirts and to pay the county dues. The club also moved to tour the newly renovated state capital and to see the Coffey County square on the floor of the visitor’s bureau that the club helped fund. Acting Vice President, Laura Krueger presided over the program portion of the meeting. A project talk was given by Grant Williams about pigs. Audrey and Isaac Durst gave an illustrated talk about archery. Blayne Linsey gave a project talk about electricity. Song leaders Hannah Proehl and Lauren Williams led the club in singing On Top of Spaghetti. Recreation leader, Grant Williams led the club in playing musical chairs. The meeting was called back to order. The club recited the club motto and the meeting was adjourned. Refreshments were served by the Krueger and Shoemaker families. Grant Williams giving a Project Talk on Pig Essentials LEGION AUXILIARY The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Lebo Library March 4. Eligible juniors for Girl’s State applicants were discussed and seniors eligible for scholarships. It was decided to have the annual cancer fund benefit card party at the Legion hall at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, April 1.. We will play cards, have refreshments and each person will receive a door prize. Donations will be accepted at the door. Members are asked to bring door prizes and store bought cookies, candy bars, peanuts and microwave popcorn for the VA hospital for patients and their bingo game prizes. Everyone is welcome to come. We will have our regular business meeting after the party. Secretary, Betty Small AMERICAN LEGION HAPPENINGS Upcoming Events LEGION MEETING: The April meeting will be on April 1st. The May meeting will be on May 6th. All members are welcome! If you are a Veteran, Reservist or on Active duty and not a member of the American Legion, please join our ranks. Contact Tony Botkin, Ed Fisher, Frenchie Frye or Mick Sleezer for details. Notes and Votes The Spring Stag Supper is scheduled for April 12 th . If you are interested in helping us with the 2014 Spring Stag Supper, please meet us at the Legion Hall at 4:00 PM on April 10 th for cleaning and slicing duty! Cooking duties will commence around 4:00 PM on April 12 th if you’re more inclined to help cook them than slice them. Flyers are posted around town with details. See you there! Post elections are upon us. Post elections must be completed by May 1 st , so if you are interested in or thinking about being an officer in Post 323, please contact Tony Botkin at 256-6374, or Frenchie Frye at 256- 6061 no later than April 9 th . Legion members can expect to see ballots in the mail once the ballot is set. Please vote for your candidate and return the ballots prior to April 30 th . The American Legion Hall is available for events, parties, etc. Contact Ed Fisher, Tony Botkin, Frenchie Frye, Tom Zink or Mick Sleezer for available dates and times. Cost is $35.00 per event. Disability Items: The American Legion has a number of items for disabled/ injured persons. Wheelchairs, crutches, etc. Contact a Tony Botkin, Ed Fisher or Frenchie Frye for availability. .
