Leadership Spotlight
E. Tyler Miller
E. Tyler Miller is Co-Chair of the
Development Committee, with
Neil Hokanson, for the new Children’s
Garden. Tyler first became
involved with the Quail Botanical
Gardens five years ago when he
was taking several of his grandchildren
on an outing through the Gardens
and met President/CEO Julian
Duval.
“My father loved gardens, and I
grew up having a ‘victory garden’
and enjoying plants and trees,” says
Tyler. “It was a natural transition
for my wife Diane and I to get excited
about helping create a new
children’s garden for the community.
We love Balboa Park and all it
represents. We now have a unique
opportunity to create a lasting legacy
here in North County. We
also know that unless we act now,
there will not be any opportunities
to preserve our beautiful gardens
and open land.”
CHILDREN’S GARDEN - COME GROW WITH US!
Q uail Botanical Gardens has a wonderful opportunity to expand onto 4 ½ acres of
undeveloped property along its northern border. The first phase of this growth plan is a
place where children and families can enjoy the outdoors and experience the wonder of
being close to nature – a Children’s Garden. Through thoughtful design and creative
programming, the new Children’s Garden will provide a nurturing environment for children
and families to explore the natural world.
Tree House
Our one-of-a-kind tree, rising more than 20 feet
high, will blend manmade materials with living plants.
T he new Children’s Garden will offer
many new educational opportunities and
natural experiences for all to enjoy! Construction
is scheduled to begin in April
2008 and should be completed by the
Spring of 2009. A special thanks to the
many wonderful people who have dedicated
their time, talents, and funding to
this important and exciting project.
Many wonderful exhibits planned
for the new Children's Garden are
available to donors for "naming"
rights. (See the enclosed site map). If
you are interested in honoring or
memorializing a loved one, please
contact Tracie Barham for a list of
available naming opportunities.
Tyler, a Stanford graduate, is a partner
of Collins Development Company,
which develops, owns, and
operates retail and industrial buildings
in California. His interests
include Christian, community, and
charitable support groups and offices.
He also enjoys reading, gardening,
traveling, fishing, handball
and a little golf.
Tyler and wife Diane have been
married for 49 years, have four
children and 12 grandchildren.
"The formation of the Community
Advisory Council is an overt effort on the
part of the Board and Staff of Quail Botanical
Gardens to actively seek the advice
and guidance of leaders of the communities
we serve," said Julian Duval. "We are
delighted that Frances White has agreed
to serve as Chair of this important new
Council," he continued. With 43 members
already signed up, and having held their first
gathering, the Council will help inform and
educate business and civic leaders of the importance
of the Gardens to the region; help
generate enthusiasm and commitment for the
work of the Gardens and help promote community
pride through involvement in the Gardens.
Council members will meet once or twice
annually to review plans and upcoming projects
of the Gardens. If you are interested in
learning more about the Community Advisory
Council, please contact the Tracie Barham
