Cast-in anchor channels are often installed
in the top-of-slab position. They
must lie flush with the horizontal top surface
of the concrete. Hilti anchor channels
incorporate a number of features

The challenge
Construction technology is in a state of
ongoing development. Modern, eyecatching
designs, new materials and
special requirements to be met by the
building all present a challenge and
place high demands on facade design
engineers.
IT systems have now become firmly
established as essential tools for planners
and design engineers. They support
these specialists in many areas of their
work and help them increase efficiency
considerably, not only during planning
but also in the implementation phase.
Research and development
In developing this new design software,
Hilti paid close attention to the needs
and wishes of users active in this field.
They requested that the volume of data
needed for installation of the software
and subsequent updates should be kept
low, that it should be intuitive and easy
to learn to use, that frequent users
should be able to make their own settings
to suit their own needs, that the
method of calculation and the results
should be transparent and well documented
and, moreover, that other documents
and product information should
be quickly and easily available.
The Hilti solution
Hilti offers a series of design applications,
selection aids and sources of
information in the form of PC software
under the name PROFIS. The fastening
design applications of particular interest
to facade planning engineers are Hilti
PROFIS Anchor Channel and PROFIS
Anchor. At Hilti, we not only guarantee
the quality of our products, we also
believe that making the latest developments
in construction technology as well
as advances in PC software available
to customers in a form that meets their
needs optimally is a task of central
importance.
These PC applications feature a uniform
user interface that’s easy to become
familiar with. PROFIS is installed in
modular form and calculations are based
on the most recent CEN / TS status.
When entering your data you can
choose between using the tabs or entering
the data directly in the graphical
3D-view which, of course, can be adjusted
during use, as desired.

The optimized anchor channel.
For fastening curtain wall facades securely.
The challenge
The shapes, styles and materials used
in the construction of facades are
becoming increasingly unconventional.
Accordingly, the fastenings used to
secure each section are frequently located
in the heavily-reinforced edge zone
of the supporting concrete structure.
The demands placed on these fastenings
in terms of their usability, loadbearing
capacity and life expectancy are
thus rising all the time. Cast-in anchor
channels are therefore the preferred solution
for securing heavy facades.
Research and development
By employing advanced computer simulation
methods and through intensive
testing of various designs, Hilti engineers
have optimized the classic rectangular
section of these cast-in channels. The
resulting innovative V-section ensures
significantly better loadbearing performance
at the edge zones of structural
components. Modified crack formation
characteristics ensure that loads are
taken up by a larger area of the concrete,
thus permitting higher shear loads and
reduced edge distances as well as
ensuring greater safety.
Thanks to new developments in plastics
technologies, the foam used for the filling
strip in the channel has excellent properties.
Not only is it environmentally friendly,
it also forms a very efficient protective
seal.
The Hilti solution
This new, approved channel system for
fastening curtain wall facades offers
many advantages. Available in a range
of lengths from 100 mm to 5850 mm in
seven different cross sections, it guarantees
great versatility and the installation
aid incorporated in the design of the
channel facilitates precise alignment.
A system consisting of end caps plus
the new foam filling strip effectively
protects the inner surfaces of the channel
during the pouring of the concrete.
The foam strip can be quickly and easily
removed without leaving any remains
and without damaging the channel’s corrosion
protection. The hot-dip galvanized
finish on parts of the system provides
proven long-term durability and,
thanks to the channel’s unique geometry,
only one universal type of bolt is
required for all relevant facade fastening
applications.
The new V-form allows higher loads
to be taken up close to slab edges
where shear loads occur.
End caps and a new type of foam filling
with tear-out strip for quick removal
keep the channel free of debris.
The Hilti cast-in channel system will
be approved for static and dynamic
loads as well as loads occurring in the
event of fire (approval applied for).

The challenge
The structure of a building changes dramatically
during the course of a fire.
Components become deformed and
facades bulge outwards. Conventional
firestop solutions can compensate for
these deformations only to a limited
extent. Gaps and cracks thus open up
between floor decks and walls or curtain
wall facade sections, allowing flames,
smoke and dangerous fumes to spread.
The spread of smoke and fumes to higher
floors of a building through openings
of this kind is a frequent cause of death
in fires.
Research and development
The sealing membrane created by Hilti
CFS-SP WB firestop joint spray is extremely
elastic and capable of adapting
to a gap width increase of up to 50 %,
depending on the type of joint system
used. In situations where conventional
firestop measures fail, Hilti firestop joint
spray provides a reliable, fire-resistant
membrane. This tested and approved
firestop solution considerably delays the
spread of fire to higher floor levels of a
building. Thanks to its outstanding flexibility,
this joint spray was one of the
Hilti firestop products used in the construction
of the Burj Dubai.
The Hilti solution
This spray-on firestop coating from Hilti
makes the task of sealing joints at curtain
wall facades and between ceilings and
walls much easier. Hilti CFS-SP WB
firestop joint spray can be applied very
easily and provides a tested and approved
firestop solution with outstanding
properties.
It’s the universal firestop solution for
ceiling and wall connection joints and for
curtain wall facades. The product is also
highly suitable for quickly sealing the
joints between floor decks and facades.

Advanced measuring and alignment systems.
For accurate installation.
The challenge
The job of fixing anchor channels for
curtain wall facades in position before
the concrete is poured has be carried
out with great accuracy. It’s not only important
that the channel lies flush with
the surface of the finished slab – the
entire facade has to be aligned with millimeter
accuracy in the horizontal and
vertical planes. Small initial errors in the
placement of the channels can quickly
add up and become the cause of major
problems.
Research and development
Measuring and alignment forms an important
integral part of the entire chain of
operations on every jobsite. But a great
deal of time can be saved in measuring
and alignment work when the right aids
and equipment are used. A tiny mistake
made when measuring can later become
the cause of high additional costs. But
the use of laser tools for outdoor measuring
and alignment work can also present
major challenges when problems such
as laser beam interference, temperature
fluctuations, wind and vibration are encountered.
These factors, however, were
all taken into account during the development
of Hilti measuring and alignment
systems, making the resulting range of
tools extremely easy to use and highly
dependable.
The Hilti solution
The Hilti PR 35 rotating laser is ideal for
checking the levels and subsequently
bringing anchor channels into alignment
in the vertical plane. This Hilti system
is perfectly matched to the demands of
the application and can help you avoid
errors in this important chain of operations.
The PRA 760 facade adapter makes it
easy to mount the laser tool securely
on the facade in position where it’s not
in the way and not subject to vibration
from the scaffold. The rugged PR 35
rotating laser also incorporates Hilti
PulsePower technology which, with its
frequency of up to 1 million pulses per
second, ensures highly accurate results
even under the most arduous conditions.
The heart of the system, however, is
the PRA 35. This combined remote control
unit and laser receiver finds the laser
plane automatically, for spot-on alignment.

planners with a major challenge –
especially when time is at a premium.
Planning and execution of the work thus
sometimes run almost parallel. Changes
to plans at short notice can make it impossible
to use anchor channels on all
areas of the structure. For these situations,
Hilti offers a range of stud anchors
that provides versatile, well-proven solutions
for fastening facades.
Research and development
Despite the fact that stud anchors have
been a well established means of fastening
for many years, Hilti continues to
work on the improvement of these products.
Besides optimizing their performance,
research concentrates on improving
the reliability and ease of use
of these anchors, even under the most
difficult conditions. For this development
work Hilti employs the latest computer
simulation techniques and advanced test
rigs.
The Hilti solution
The broad range of sizes and types available
(M8 to M24 diameters) allows the
user great flexibility when positioning the
anchor fastening points. The anchor setting
operation, using optimized setting
tools, is quick and easy. Thanks to reduced
edge and spacing distances and
the possibility of fastening parts with a
thickness of up to 205 mm, these anchors
allow fastenings to be made individually
in accordance with the prevailing
conditions. The HAS stud anchor is
designed for use in uncracked concrete,
while the HST is approved for use in
cracked concrete. These anchors thus
provide a secure solution for your demanding
facade fastening requirements.
