Bo Kong, Assistant Professor <strong>and</strong> Director of Research, Ph.D.<br />
Bo Kong is Assistant Research Professor of the ERE <strong>program</strong> <strong>and</strong> he directs the<br />
Program’s research on East Asia. He is also Senior Associate of the Energy <strong>and</strong><br />
National Security Program of the Center for Strategic <strong>and</strong> International Studies<br />
<strong>and</strong> an expert member of the China FAQs network. Additionally, he sits on the<br />
advisory board of the Revenue Watch Institute <strong>and</strong> the International Editorial<br />
Board for the University of Kebangsaan Malaysia’ journal—JEBAT: Malaysian<br />
Journal of History, Politics, <strong>and</strong> Strategic Studies.<br />
Previously, he served a number of positions in the analytical community,<br />
including Director of the Global Energy <strong>and</strong> Environment Initiative at SAIS,<br />
Energy <strong>and</strong> Mining Associate at Ayrlie Partners, Chief Energy Economist for<br />
ChinaStakes.com, Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Global Dialogue in South<br />
Africa, Research Fellow at the Center for Global Security of the Pacific Northwest<br />
National Laboratory, <strong>and</strong> Research Associate at the Shanghai WTO Affairs<br />
Consultation Center. His research interests focus on four aspects of China—its<br />
<strong>energy</strong> governance, its foreign <strong>energy</strong> policy, its crisis management, <strong>and</strong> its<br />
interactions with the global order—<strong>and</strong> comparative <strong>energy</strong> policy. Born <strong>and</strong><br />
raised in western China, he earned his M.A. <strong>and</strong> Ph.D. from SAIS.<br />
Jessica Lewis, Visiting Research Associate, M.A.<br />
Jessica Lewis is a Visiting Research Associate with the ERE Program at the <strong>Johns</strong><br />
<strong>Hopkins</strong> University School of Advanced International Studies. Her research at<br />
SAIS focuses on market-based solutions for rural electrification <strong>and</strong> economic<br />
development in South Asia <strong>and</strong> sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to joining the ERE<br />
<strong>program</strong>, Jessica worked as an <strong>environment</strong>al <strong>and</strong> <strong>energy</strong> research consultant in<br />
California <strong>and</strong> Washington, DC. She also spent a year in Kenya managing the<br />
construction <strong>and</strong> development of a residential school for orphans, <strong>and</strong> she<br />
continues to serve on the board of the organization she worked with – the<br />
Margaret Okari Children's Foundation. Jessica holds a B.A. with honors from<br />
Pomona College <strong>and</strong> an M.A. in International Economics & Energy, Resources<br />
<strong>and</strong> Environment with honors from <strong>Johns</strong> <strong>Hopkins</strong> SAIS.<br />
D. Chad Reed, Visiting Research Associate, M.A.<br />
D. Chad Reed is an <strong>energy</strong> <strong>and</strong> sustainability consultant whose research focuses<br />
on emerging urban sustainability challenges <strong>and</strong> developing innovative policy,<br />
technological, <strong>and</strong> financing solutions. Prior to joining SAIS, he served as an<br />
Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps Fellow with Ingersoll R<strong>and</strong>’s Center<br />
for Energy Efficiency <strong>and</strong> Sustainability, where he identified, scoped, analyzed<br />
<strong>and</strong> recommended <strong>energy</strong> efficiency investments to senior executives, <strong>and</strong><br />
developed solutions to emerging corporate sustainability challenges. Previously,<br />
Mr. Reed – fluent in Arabic <strong>and</strong> a Middle East specialist – served for five years in<br />
the US intelligence community. He holds an M.A. (with honors) in International<br />
Finance <strong>and</strong> Energy, Resources, <strong>and</strong> Environment from <strong>Johns</strong> <strong>Hopkins</strong> SAIS.<br />
