Bo Kong, Assistant Professor and Director of Research, Ph.D.
Bo Kong is Assistant Research Professor of the ERE program and he directs the
Program’s research on East Asia. He is also Senior Associate of the Energy and
National Security Program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies
and an expert member of the China FAQs network. Additionally, he sits on the
advisory board of the Revenue Watch Institute and the International Editorial
Board for the University of Kebangsaan Malaysia’ journal—JEBAT: Malaysian
Journal of History, Politics, and Strategic Studies.
Previously, he served a number of positions in the analytical community,
including Director of the Global Energy and Environment Initiative at SAIS,
Energy and Mining Associate at Ayrlie Partners, Chief Energy Economist for
ChinaStakes.com, Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Global Dialogue in South
Africa, Research Fellow at the Center for Global Security of the Pacific Northwest
National Laboratory, and Research Associate at the Shanghai WTO Affairs
Consultation Center. His research interests focus on four aspects of China—its
energy governance, its foreign energy policy, its crisis management, and its
interactions with the global order—and comparative energy policy. Born and
raised in western China, he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from SAIS.
Jessica Lewis, Visiting Research Associate, M.A.
Jessica Lewis is a Visiting Research Associate with the ERE Program at the Johns
Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. Her research at
SAIS focuses on market-based solutions for rural electrification and economic
development in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to joining the ERE
program, Jessica worked as an environmental and energy research consultant in
California and Washington, DC. She also spent a year in Kenya managing the
construction and development of a residential school for orphans, and she
continues to serve on the board of the organization she worked with – the
Margaret Okari Children's Foundation. Jessica holds a B.A. with honors from
Pomona College and an M.A. in International Economics & Energy, Resources
and Environment with honors from Johns Hopkins SAIS.
D. Chad Reed, Visiting Research Associate, M.A.
D. Chad Reed is an energy and sustainability consultant whose research focuses
on emerging urban sustainability challenges and developing innovative policy,
technological, and financing solutions. Prior to joining SAIS, he served as an
Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps Fellow with Ingersoll Rand’s Center
for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability, where he identified, scoped, analyzed
and recommended energy efficiency investments to senior executives, and
developed solutions to emerging corporate sustainability challenges. Previously,
Mr. Reed – fluent in Arabic and a Middle East specialist – served for five years in
the US intelligence community. He holds an M.A. (with honors) in International
Finance and Energy, Resources, and Environment from Johns Hopkins SAIS.
