40. Who <strong>in</strong> the Government is responsible for food safety?<br />

The M<strong>in</strong>istry of Public Health is responsible for the implementation of both The Food<br />

Act and the Public Health Act. A Committee represent<strong>in</strong>g many different Government<br />

Departments controls the implementation of the Hazardous Substances Act.<br />

With<strong>in</strong> the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Public Health, the follow<strong>in</strong>g organisations play a role <strong>in</strong> food<br />

safety:<br />

The Food and Drug Adm<strong>in</strong>istration (FDA) is the ma<strong>in</strong> agency responsible for<br />

implement<strong>in</strong>g The Food Act, and thereby ensur<strong>in</strong>g that Thai food is safe and<br />

clean. The FDA sets standards, issues import licenses and registers food<br />

products.<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>cial Offices of Public Health support the FDA at the local level by, for<br />

example, carry<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>in</strong>spections of markets and restaurants.<br />

The Department of Medical Science (DOMS) carries out research <strong>in</strong>to food<br />

safety, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g analysis of food samples.<br />

The M<strong>in</strong>istry of Agriculture and Cooperative also plays an important role <strong>in</strong> food<br />

safety, through the work of the follow<strong>in</strong>g organisations:<br />

The Department of Agriculture (DOA) is responsible for controll<strong>in</strong>g the use of<br />

pesticides under The Hazardous Substances Act. With<strong>in</strong> the DOA, both the<br />

Office of Research and Development on Agricultural Production Science and<br />

the Office of Agricultural Regulatory <strong>take</strong> care of register<strong>in</strong>g pesticides.<br />

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DOAE) is responsible for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

farmers. This <strong>in</strong>cludes tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Integrated</strong> <strong>Pest</strong> <strong>Management</strong> (IPM).<br />

Market places are <strong>in</strong>spected to ensure<br />

that food is safe.<br />

In a Farmer Field School farmers become actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

about their own crops.<br />
