2011–12 SEASON PREVIEW
Wilmington College enters the 2011–12 season with renewed focus on
making plays when games are on the line. The Quakers posted a 10-16
record last season, a year after capturing the program’s first Ohio Athletic
Conference championship and debuting in the NCAA Tournament.
For the Quakers, a priority this season is to prove that last season was
a fluke.
“We didn’t make enough winning plays at winning time last season,”
said head coach K.C. Hunt, who is in his fifth season on the WC sideline.
“We lost nine games where we had the lead with under four minutes to
play in the game. It came down to execution, maturity and an extremely
young basketball team that needed to take its lumps. We came in a little
overconfident, just thinking that it was going to happen for us again. It
doesn’t work that way. We all learned a very tough, valuable lesson that
you have to do things the right way each and every day to make sure
that you are able to make the plays you need to as a group when it’s time
to win basketball games.”
An experienced senior class will show the way for the Quakers, on and
off the court.
“There is no way you can overestimate ‘senioritis,’” Hunt said. “These
guys all know that this is it, this is their last opportunity to put on a
college basketball uniform. I think that is going to make a huge difference
in our sense of urgency throughout the team.”
Wilmington could be. Junior guard Brandon Candella scored nine points
per game, and sophomore forward Malcolm Heard II is a double-double
threat every time he laces up his sneakers.
“Brandon and Malcolm and Ben Vonderhaar … you can go up and down
our roster and see a bunch of guys that have a ton of experience, and we
are expecting big things from them,” Hunt said.
A talented group of newcomers is also expected to make an impact, and
will be doing so against a tough schedule that includes nationally ranked
non-conference foes Wooster and Wheaton.
“As a player, I always wanted to play against the best teams, and I don’t
think our guys feel any different,” Hunt said. “We have our hands full
with our non-conference opponents.”
The stakes will be raised when Wilmington — picked No. 8 in the
Preseason Coaches Poll — enters OAC play to face the likes of No. 2
Marietta.
“Marietta is obviously the team to beat, but we have five teams in
this league who have everybody back,” Hunt said. “You’re looking at
a very mature, senior-laden conference that is going to be extremely
challenging and exciting.” ■
The senior backcourt tandem of All-American Tyler White and All-OAC
point guard Antonio Bowman will push the Quakers on both sides of the
time line.
“I think those guys are a special backcourt. They have a chance to do
some unique things in Wilmington’s record book,” Hunt said. “They are
as talented as anybody in our league and anybody we are going to play
all year long. It’s going to be fun to have them out there running the show
for their senior year.”
Perhaps the biggest challenge for the upperclassmen is not to produce,
but to help their teammates become as productive as possible.
“Those guys need to attempt to make everybody else around them
better. That’s what great players do,” Hunt said. “Last year, I think there
was a little bit of lack of trust, at times, throughout the basketball team.
We have really worked on trusting each other, making that extra pass
and being a complete unit. We’re not a two-man show. We have talent
up and down our roster, and our guys are excited to gel as a group and
see what we can become.”
White and Bowman combined for 35 points per game last season,
but other players provided glimpses of just how dangerous a team
HEAD COACH K.C. HUNT
In four seasons, K.C. Hunt has taken the
Wilmington College men’s basketball
program to national prominence.
In Coach Hunt’s first two seasons, the
Quakers posted a combined 32-20 record
and earned berths in two consecutive
Ohio Athletic Conference Championships.
In 2009–10, Wilmington won a schoolrecord
22 games, captured its first
OAC Tournament title and made its first
appearance in the NCAA Championship,
where the Quakers advanced to the
second round before losing to No. 10
Eastern Mennonite University. Hunt was named the 2010 Great Lakes
Region Coach of the Year.
For Hunt and the Quakers, a priority this season is proving that last
year’s 10-16 record was a fluke.
“We didn’t make enough winning plays at winning time last season,”
said Hunt. “We lost nine games where we had the lead with under four
minutes to play in the game. It came down to execution, maturity and
an extremely young basketball team that needed to take its lumps.
We came in a little overconfident, just thinking that it was going to
happen for us again. It doesn’t work that way. We all learned a very
tough, valuable lesson that you have to do things the right way each and
every day to make sure that you are able to make the plays you need to
as a group when it’s time to win basketball games.
“The Wilmington College basketball program is in a very good position,”
Hunt said. “We’ve got a young nucleus that returns after graduating
three incredible seniors. I think we’re poised to keep this program going
in a winning direction.”
Hunt’s team plays 40 minutes of intense basketball that is fueled by
relentless effort on both ends of the court. And it all starts with highpressure
defense.
Hunt played collegiate basketball at Wichita State University and ended
his career as the Shockers’ all-time assists leader.
A 1995 graduate of The Ohio State University, Hunt coached at
St. Lawrence University and Dublin Coffman and Perry high schools prior
to joining Wilmington’s staff in 2004. ■
Rob Noschang joins the Wilmington
College coaching staff for the 2011–12
season.
A native of Cincinnati and graduate of
Glen Este High School, Noschang attended
the College of Mount St. Joseph,
where he was a three-year captain of
the Lions basketball team
During the 2005–06 season, Noschang
helped the Lions win 16 games and was
named to the All-Heartland Conference
Team.
After graduating from the Mount in 2007, Noschang went on to coach at
Walnut Hills High School and for the past two seasons was an assistant
coach at Bluffton University.
“Rob is a wonderful addition to our basketball program,” Wilmington
head coach K.C. Hunt said. “He brings a new set of eyes and a ton of
energy, both on the floor and on the recruiting trail.”
Kerry Wilkinson
Kerry Wilkinson joins the Wilmington
College coaching staff for the 2011–12
season.
A native of Wilmington, Ohio, and graduate
of Clinton-Massie High School,
Wilkinson was a three-year member of
the Wilmington College basketball team
before graduating in 2009.
“It’s exciting to have Kerry back as part
of our basketball family,” Wilmington
head coach K.C. Hunt said. “He was a
tremendous player. If he hadn’t been
bitten by injuries, he would have a lot of records around here. His knowledge
of the game and excitement to be back at Wilmington are really
going to rub off on our team.”
Wilkinson will be involved in recruiting and scouting and will work with
Wilmington’s post players.
Wilkinson is an intervention specialist at Wilmington Middle School.
Noschang will be the Quakers’ lead recruiter and will work with
Wilmington’s guards.
In the spring, Noschang will be an assistant coach with Wilmington’s
baseball team.
2010–11 SEASON REVIEW
obviously a very comforting thing for a coach to know where
your points are coming from. The guy is a scoring machine.
I think he can put up even bigger numbers next year as
this group continues to gel together.”
Bowman ranked third in the OAC with 16 points per game
and was second in assists (4.4) and steals (1.8) per contest.
“A-B definitely carried a big load. He had big shoes to fill
in replacing Tyler Ledford at the point,” Hunt said. “I thought
he did an admirable job. He did so much.”
team during the 2010–11 season. White was a second team
selection while Bowman was an honorable mention pick.
White was the OAC’s second-leading scorer at 18.6 points
per game. He heads into his senior season with 1,161 points
and occupies the No. 15 position on the WC all-time scoring
list. The junior forward was a first team All-Ohio Athletic
“You know that when you pencil in Tyler White’s name in the
