14 2009 Holden Cruze Exterior design 15
The all-new Holden Cruze is a small sedan
offering that delivers the presence of a big small
car. It’s dramatic, dynamic styling expresses
GM’s global design language.
Exterior design
Front
A well-planted stance is enabled
by front and rear tracks of 1544(mm)
and 1558(mm), and a wheelbase
of 2685(mm).
The next-generation dual-port
grille carries a chrome crossbar
cue with a centre-positioned, large
Holden emblem.
Large, expressive dynamically
shaped headlamps with a dual
bezel design enable an upscale
appearance.
A strong, sculpted bonnet
element accentuates a dynamic,
refined statement.
The swept windshield ensures
enhanced aerodynamics and
distribution of precipitation.
Halogen front headlamps
with chrome reflective elements
and crystal lenses are set within
the front fascia bezels.
Front fog lamps standard on CDX
models are positioned on the base
of the front fascia and provide
enhanced lighting and extra style.
Side
Extremely high fit and finish
are seen throughout – all gaps are
3.0 millimeters or less (door-to-door,
door-to-fender, hood-to-fender and
lamp-to-fascia).
Applications of chrome and
brightwork are noticeable in grilles,
belt moldings (standard on CDX),
door handles (standard on CDX),
and decklid garnish above the
number plate.
A single arc roofline helps deliver
a sleek coupe like appearance.
Strong, clean body sides
help convey an overall technical
appearance.
A “hollow” sculpted shoulder
line from the tail lamps to the
headlamps creates crisp creases
as it intersects on the decklid,
fenders, doors and hood.
Tight wheel-to-body relationship
enhances the planted appearance
and refined statement.
Large body-colour (CD) and bodycolour
with chrome insert (CDX)
pull-type door handles are tuned
for a solid feel and a quality-sounding
“thud” when released.
Large outside rearview mirrors
are body-color, with manual
folding capability, heated with
power adjustment.
Wheel size offerings are 16" steel
with covers on CD models and
17" alloy on CDX models.
Accessory 16" alloy and 17" alloy
wheels are available.
Rear
Tail lamps integrated into the rear
corners and decklid are a split-design
uncommon in the small car segment.
A rear shelf-mounted “Centre
High-Mount Stop Light (CHMSL)
incorporates 12 light emitting diodes
(LED) and adds to the upscale
statement seen in the rear.
A large Holden emblem is centre
positioned on the rear decklid.
Diesel models will proudly wear
the Ecoline Diesel badges on
the rear decklid as well as each
side of the front doors.

Interior highlights 17
Interior highlights
The premium execution, craftsmanship
and appointments inside the all-new
Holden Cruze set it apart from all other
competitors in the small car segment.
Vast spaciousness, exceptional
functionality and a harmonious flowing
cockpit add to its distinctive, sporty
and luxurious feel.
Interior design
A dual cockpit design, colour
matched with the seat inserts ensures
a confident, upscale impression
is delivered.
The integrated centre stack
(that houses the infotainment display,
radio and HVAC controls) eliminates
traditional “picture framing” of
interfaces, resulting in a contemporary,
highly refined look:
– All knobs, buttons and interfaces
incorporate a chrome-surround
accent finish and are ambient
back-lit with light-emitting diode
(LED) technology.
– Vertically shaped centre HVAC
outlets carry a vein design
with rubberized, tuned thumb-rollers
and chrome accents for air
direction adjustment.
– The integrated centre stack
flows seamlessly into the centre
console, shifter and then the
centre armrest, helping to enable
the dual cockpit design.
A three-gauge instrument cluster
(analogue speedometer, tachometer,
fuel and temperature gauges) is
dramatically absent of black voids and
contains LED backlighting in clear ice
blue illumination for a very sporty and
technical appearance.
A centre-positioned, seven-line, driver
Information display displays digital
text information including PRND
(Auto only), odometer and trip
computer functions including distance
to empty, average fuel, instantaneous
fuel consumption and average speed.
A three-spoke steering wheel
design with thicker rim enhances
grip and feel.
– A polyurethane wheel is standard
on CD models.
– A genuine leather wheel is standard
on CDX models.
– Steering wheel controls include
cruise control (on/off, set, resume,
cancel) functions on the left spoke
and audio control (volume up/down,
mute on/off, radio station and
CD track up/down) functions
on the right spoke.
Bucket seats are tailored with French
seam stitching and benchmarked
against the best offerings in the world.
They deliver superior comfort and
appearance. Regardless of model,
all seat inserts are color-matched
with the mid-IP insert.
– CD models are standard with Dark
Pewter cloth insert with cloth bolster.
– CDX models are standard with Dark
Pewter leather insert with leather
appointed bolsters.

Storage
A centre console incorporates
CD storage beneath a fore/aft
articulating armrest with an MP3
player “plug and play” auxiliary
input plug designed with a clever
cord recess.
The lower IP storage contains
an auxiliary power outlet and a
sliding dual cupholder design that
uses automatically adjusting pincher
elements to carry any cup size.
A 6.3 cm deep bin in the IP
is located at the top of the centre
stack and contains a rubberized base
for additional storage capability.
An illuminated, lockable glove box
provides additional storage space.
Integrated bottle holders in all
door pockets provide added
beverage storage.
Seatback pockets are large
enough to carry books, road
atlases or thin laptops.
60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks
supply large pass-through access
to the boot for longer items. Rear
split-seat folding capability includes
an articulating armrest with integrated
22 2009 Holden Cruze
Technology Security
23
Technology
Security
The all-new Holden Cruze offers
available technologies designed
to ensure an outstanding vehicle
experience in terms of performance,
comfort, convenience and safety.
Quick Thinking
The technical backbone of Cruze
comes in the form of the GM LAN
Serial Data Electrical Architecture –
a high and low-speed data network
that connects system modules
(anti-lock braking, engine control
and electronic stability control, etc.)
This network gives Cruze the
capability to communicate
instantaneously at approximately
50 times the speed of electrical
systems used in the past.
Available personal
technologies
Rear park assist system uses four
sensors located on the rear fascia.
This system sends out ultrasonic
waves when Cruze is driven in
reverse at low speeds. The sending
sensor and adjacent sensors pick
up the echo of a signal when it
bounces off an object. Standard
on CDX models and available
as an accessory on CD models.
Standard auto headlamps can
automatically turn ON the headlights
during darkness for increased night
time visibility and OFF during daylight.
Follow me home lighting allows
user programmable timing of up to
3 minutes which enable front
headlamps to remain on after exit
and locking of vehicle.
Standard cruise control allows
the speed of the Cruze to be set and
maintained. Cruise control functions
including on/off set, resume, cancel
are positioned on the left hand spoke
of the steering wheel.
Standard trip computer provides
useful vehicle information including
odometer, trip meter, distance to
empty (range), average speed,
average fuel economy and
instantaneous fuel consumption.
The trip computer functions are
controllable via the right hand
indicator stalk switch.
Steering wheel audio controls let
you change radio stations, adjust the
volume, select a different CD track,
switch from CD to radio and mute
the sound whilst not taking your
hands off the wheel.
Audio systems
Standard audio system:
– 6-speaker audio system with MP3
compatible in dash CD, radio and
MP3 “plug and play” functionality.
Features standard on audio systems:
– Up to 6 “favorites” pages, which
store both AM/FM on the one
favourite page eliminating
the need to switch between
FM and AM bands.
– Digital clock.
– Internal four-channel amplifier.
– Graphic text display (two-color).
A standard vehicle immobilizer
won’t let the engine of Cruze start
unless the ignition switch verifies
the correct key is being used.
Standard child safety door locks
and a lockout switch control the
function of the inside door handle
to help protect children inside Cruze.
Standard power door locks are
automatic and programmable.
As soon as vehicle velocity exceeds
a certain speed, all four doors
can lock automatically. A simple
procedure allows the driver to tailor
the unlock function.
A standard remote keyless entry
system has three buttons – lock,
unlock and boot.
Interior lamps illuminate as soon
as the power door locks are activated
by the remote keyless entry system.
After occupants enter Cruze and
close the doors, the lamps remain
on for a short period to facilitate
latching seat belts and inserting
the key into the ignition switch.
Battery rundown protection shuts
down certain lights inadvertently left
on after 20 minutes.

24 2009 Holden Cruze
Safety 25
The all-new Holden Cruze incorporates a host
of structural enhancements as well as a full range
of active and passive safety systems standard
across the range – all designed to place it among
the safest vehicles in its class.
ESC
Safety
Accident avoidance
Standard 4-wheel disc brakes
with ABS. If wheel ‘lock up’ is
detected under forceful braking,
ABS momentarily reduces brake
pressure at the affected wheel(s).
This improves braking efficiency –
reducing stopping distances on
most surfaces – and helps the
vehicle remain steerable and
directionally stable.
Standard Electronic Stability Control
System (ESC) constantly compares
the vehicle’s movements with the
steering wheel angle to determine
if the vehicle is moving in the
direction you intend. If skidding
appears imminent, ESC applies
brake pressure to individual wheels
as appropriate and, if necessary,
trims engine power. This dramatically
increases turning and cornering
safety, especially in ‘evasive
action’ situations.
Standard Anti-lock Brakes (ABS)
uses input from wheel speed sensors
to regulate individual wheel brakes for
reduced stopping distances, maximum
stability and improved steerability in
braking situations.
Standard Traction Control (TCS) is
designed to minimise slippage during
acceleration by recognising if either
front wheel has insufficient grip, and
adjusting driveforce and brakeforce
accordingly. It produces greater
vehicle stability on wet and icy roads,
and also in ‘split’ conditions, such
as when a vehicle has two wheels
on bitumen and two on a gravel verge.
Standard Brake Assist (BA) is
designed for emergency braking
situations. Few drivers actually
press the brake pedal firmly enough
to achieve maximum braking
performance. BA is designed to sense
how fast you press the brake pedal
in an emergency, and maximises
braking pressure to optimise
braking performance.
Standard Electronic Brakeforce
Distribution (EBD) regulates the
brakeforce applied to each wheel,
EBD helps ensure optimal balance
between front and rear brakes, which
helps minimise stopping distances.

Safety continued
Occupant protection
Cruze has been awarded the
highest possible 5-star ANCAP
(Australian New Car Assessment
Program) rating.
An extremely strong structure
and stiff body with efficient, effective
load paths provide Cruze maximum
protection in the event of a collision
from virtually any direction.
A unibody of high-strength steel
incorporates full-length frame rails
and a safety cage into a single,
welded unit. It is designed with front
and rear crush zones engineered
to collapse in a controlled manner
to help absorb crash energy.
Bumper systems are engineered
to require minimal repairs after front
or rear collisions. The front bumper
is positioned for optimum safety
in the event of a collision with
an another vehicle.
A pedestrian protection design
to the hood and relating hinge
structure of Cruze are designed to
reduce the chance of pedestrians
striking the engine block – a collision
that has been identified as a
major source of serious injury in
car pedestrian accidents.
Collapsible pedal release system
reduces the chance of lower extremity
injuries to the driver in the event
of a front collision.
Standard driver and front passenger
airbags. For maximum protection
in certain frontal collisions, Cruze
will deploy front airbags for the driver
and front passenger. The 60 litre
driver airbag can fully inflate in
60 milliseconds, while the front
passenger airbag can inflate to a full
130 litres in just 70 milliseconds.
Standard side airbags are mounted
on the driver and front passenger
seat for thorax and pelvis protection
of front row occupants.
Standard head curtain airbags are
mounted to the roof rails between
the A and C pillars for additional head
and neck protection of both front and
second-row seat occupants.
Standard three-point lap and shoulder
belts available for all passengers suit
a wide range of physiques.
– Driver and front passenger safety
belts include energy-absorbing
retractors and pre-tensioners that
deploy in frontal and rear collisions.
A standard child seat latching
system is provided at each rear
outboard seating position designed
to secure child safety seats in any
of the three rear seating positions.
The Safety Diagnostic Module
(SDM) is mounted along the
centreline of the vehicle under the
centre console. It receives input
from sensors and determines the
severity and location of the impact,
then decides whether or not to
deploy the air bags and activate
the seatbelt pre-tensioners.
Two side impact sensors mounted
in the B pillars on both sides of Cruze
trigger the side curtain roof rail air
bags, seat-mounted thorax air bags
and seatbelt pre-tensioners.

Control and handling
The all-new Holden Cruze offers an
array of sophisticated and technological
chassis enhancements that deliver
a taut and fun to drive package.
Chassis
Body Frame Integral (BFI)
architecture is amongst the stiffest
in the small car global segment
and provides drivers with a heightened
sense of solidity, stability and
confident road command.
Suspension
A McPherson strut-type front
suspension includes:
– Front strut modules that make use of
uniquely shaped suspension springs
and reduce instances of smooth
road shake.
tuned to ensure an optimal balance
of comfort and handling agility.
– Hydraulic ride bushings (found more
commonly on luxury vehicles) that
help result in a higher degree of ride
isolation and a quieter performance.
– A front direct-acting hollow stabilizer
bar for maximum stiffness that helps
result in better performance.
A U-shaped rear suspension with
torsion beam includes:
– Noise and vibration attenuation from
large (70 mm) bushings.
– Agile, self-steering and stability
characteristics due to intensive
development of the torsion beam.
Electronic Stability
Control (ESC)
A standard Electronic Stability
Control System uses
the electronic brake and traction
control capabilities of Cruze to
provide more precise, controlled
anti-lock braking performance
as well as exceptional traction
and yaw stability.
Steering
Standard hydraulic power rack-andpinion
power steering is tuned for
more responsiveness with good on
centre feel and driver feedback with a
relatively quick reacting ratio.
Turning diameter is relatively tight
– 10.9 metres curb-to-curb, and just
over two turns lock-to-lock.
The steering column can be adjusted
up or down with a rake angle of plus
or minus 2.3 degrees.
Brakes
A four-wheel disc brake system
provides excellent stopping and stable
braking capability.
This system is equipped with a
non-asbestos organic brake lining that
is designed for improving lining wear,
reducing brake noise and enhancing
pedal feel.
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
uses input from wheel speed sensors
to regulate individual wheel brakes
for reduced stopping distances,
maximum stability and improved
steerability in braking situations.
Traction Control System
Standard Traction Control (TCS)
is designed to minimise slippage during
acceleration by recognising if either
front wheel has insufficient grip, and
adjusting driveforce and brakeforce
accordingly. It produces greater
vehicle stability on wet and icy roads,
and also in ‘split’ conditions, such as
when a vehicle has two wheels on
bitumen and two on a gravel verge.

Quality 35
Quality
From structure to sheet metal,
the all-new Holden Cruze has been
meticulously crafted to ensure
a high level of quality, durability
and overall appeal to the senses.
World-class quality
GM’s Global Delta architecture
combines the expertise and
capabilities of engineering and
design staff from Germany, Korea,
North America and Australia.
Global quality
Cruze benefits from GM’s
comprehensive global quality
process and Global Delta architecture
that’s targeted to achieve top-level
quality with all aspects highly
scrutinized to meet expectations
worldwide, including:
– Exterior visual and
operational quality
– Secondary surfaces
– Engine compartment appearance
– Interior visual and
operational quality
– Exterior and interior lighting
– Power and acceleration
– Ride comfort
– Handling behavior
– Brake feel and performance
– Controls and features
– Climate comfort
– Versatility
GM’s Global Delta Body Frame
Integral (BFI) architecture provides
a superior foundation for achieving
exceptional noise, vibration and
overall acoustical performance.
World-class element-to-element
gap and flush relationships are
unmatched in the segment.
All underhood components have
been held to a standard of
appearance that ensures uniformity
with similarly grained surfaces, colors
and overall aesthetics.
A four-point engine mounting
system (an application more
commonly seen on luxury vehicles)
helps provide optimal ride and
handling, idle quality and reduced
noise transfer.
Sound quality
A stiffer structure helps to tune
out and isolate powertrain, road
and wind noise and create a quiet,
pleasant cabin comfort level.
The body on Cruze incorporates
a widespread attention to extensive
sealing to help eliminate the most
minute “pins of daylight” and the
potential noise, wind or outside
contaminants they might admit.
All doors incorporate a triple-layered
sealing system to reduce noise,
vibration and airflow through
the door and into the passenger
compartment.
A four-point isolated engine cradle
helps minimize road and powertrain
noise and vibration into the cabin.
A formed fibreglass blanket on
the underside of the hood serves
as an effective barrier to engine
noise that could pass through
the windshield.
The front-of-dash panel is
sandwiched between two damping
mats as an additional abatement
to noise transfer.
The headliner is of thermal fibre
acoustic design and incorporates five
layers for superior sound isolation.
Floor carpet is precisely formed
to the floor pan of Cruze to effectively
damp out noise frequency and
vibration.
Melt on patches are strategically
applied to the interior body structure
to effectively damp smaller section
interfaces that can move over time
and resonate – the result is a 10
to 40 percent damping performance
improvement compared to material
that is adhesively applied.
Composite wheel house liners
at all four corners help damp
rain noise and other impacts
(such as gravel) that create “sizzle”
noise from transferring into the
passenger compartment.
The boot is fully lined with a
thick walled acoustic material.
