BANDHAS-INTRODUCTION<br />

he human body can be compared to a<br />

Thouse where a lot <strong>of</strong> things happen it<br />

is also a scene <strong>of</strong> exchange, there are many<br />

openings or gates; both gross and subtle. It<br />

is through these gates that food is ingested<br />

and excreted, air is inhaled and exhaled,<br />

and energy is absorbed and released. Yogis<br />

have discovered that these gates need to<br />

be sealed to harness the latent and hidden<br />

powers in the body. Bandhas or seals are<br />

practices that help you close various gates<br />

<strong>of</strong> the body. The bandhas are applied at<br />

3 crucial points in the body, which also<br />

correspond to certain endocrine glands<br />

as well as nerve junctions as well as the<br />

chakras along the spine. At the throat,<br />

Jalandhar Bandha is applied; Udyan Bandha<br />

is applied at the solar plexus and the Moola<br />

Bandha at the base <strong>of</strong> the spine. The moola<br />

and jalandhar Bandha shut <strong>of</strong>f the upper and<br />

lower openings <strong>of</strong> the digestive tract thus<br />

shutting <strong>of</strong>f the flow <strong>of</strong> prana vayu upwards<br />

and apana vayu downwards, udyan enables<br />

the mixing <strong>of</strong> the two around the solar<br />

plexus. Applying all three together is called<br />

the Maha Bandha which also has the effect<br />

<strong>of</strong> creating a no thought state which can<br />

be seen as the ultimate aim <strong>of</strong> the bandhas.<br />

At the physical level bandhas can be<br />

seen as neuro-muscular locks that target<br />

endocrine glands(endocrine glands are<br />

ductless glands that produce hormones)<br />

which are released into the blood stream<br />

through the semi-permeable wall <strong>of</strong> the<br />

glands, the effective production and release<br />

<strong>of</strong> the hormones are greatly enhanced<br />

by the practice <strong>of</strong> bandhas, for example<br />

doing the jalandhar bandha massages the<br />

thyroid and parathyroid glands, thyroxin<br />

is produced by the thyroid glands which<br />

determines the metabolism <strong>of</strong> the body.<br />

If an obese person does jalandhar bandha<br />

regularly, their weight will drop due to the<br />

higher metabolic rate in the body.<br />

By working on the entire hormonal<br />

system bandhas are the potent bridge<br />

between the body and the brain which<br />

uses hormones to signal various activities<br />

in the body. In yoga bandhas play a vital role<br />

in creating a harmony between the body<br />

and the mind.<br />

JALANDHAR BANDHA<br />

1. Sit in any meditative posture<br />

2. Inhale and lock your chin to your chest.<br />

3. Puff the chest up slightly and retain<br />

the breath inside for as long as is<br />

comfortable<br />

4. Slowly bring your head up and exhale<br />

out.<br />

5. Release the contraction and then inhale<br />
