Wesley Chapel author of two marriage primers suggests faith,
When Melanie Chitwood first told
her husband, Scott, a former pilot, that
she was about to realize her dream by
writing a book, she thought he would
laugh so hard he might crash his
plane.
The Wesley Chapel woman has many
roles – wife, mother, published author
most days. She also lends a
While Union County hasn’t decided if it will sell Carolinas
Medical Center-Union, commissioners do want to know who’s
interested in buying it. During their March 25 work session,
commissioners authorized Kaufman Hall representatives to
start collecting official letters of interest from prospective
buyers, detailing their financial abilities.
“We’re getting a lot of calls and all the press coverage is just
increasing that,” Kaufman Hall Senior Vice President Michael
Finnerty said, adding that the firm hasn’t received any official
Wesley Chapel residents have learned
to balance on life’s tightrope,
with Melanie readily admitting
it takes lots of practice,
trial and error, and not a
little stress. In fact, her two
books, “What a Wife Needs
from Her Husband” ($12.99,
“What a Husband Needs
from His Wife,” ($12.99,
she said has sold 30,000
copies, are full of practical
advice on how to build and maintain
healthy relationships between husband
life’s ups and downs.
Union County wants more communication with its local
Stallings faces parks
funding decision
First-phase-costs $500K
higher than expected
by Brian Carlton
brian@unioncountyweekly.com
To proceed with its parks plan, the
Stallings Town Council will have to
decide if it wants to start slower or pay
more. Costs for the plan’s first phase,
which includes athletic fields, a splash
pad and a shelter area with restrooms
at Stallings Municipal Park, 322 Stallings
Road, now are estimated at $2 million,
up from the $1.5 million the town
budgeted, according to Charlotte civilengineering
firm Site Solutions.
“The original estimates didn’t take
into account the cost of fill dirt, grading
and piping,” Town Manager Brian
Matthews said. “They didn’t do any preliminary
engineering, because we didn’t
pay them for that. Once they got out
there, they realized the estimates were
not appropriate to do exactly what the
concept plan shows,” Matthews said.
For the 2009 estimate, the town
asked Site Solutions for a ballpark figure
without visiting the park to gauge
site-specific issues such as topography
serving waxhaw and weddington
company’s best guess, Site Solutions
architect Phillip Hobbes said.
“(Originally) we were not charged to
handle topography, finished grades (or)
storm water,” Hobbes said. “We did a
series of cost estimates.”
Now that the park’s concept has
been approved, Site Solutions developed
a detailed estimate that could be
used to issue proposal requests from
companies interested in construction
contracts.
According to Hobbes, most of the
extra money is grading and drainage,
which added $451,000 to the bill. The
remaining $49,000 is work on the proposed
shelter, which includes bathrooms,
finishing work on arbors around
the park and a suggested 8 percent contingency.
Town officials were hesitant to commit
to a higher price tag. “We approved
a concept and were agreeable to
$1.5 million, which is still a pretty goodsized
expenditure,” Stallings Mayor
Lynda Paxton said.
Her comments were echoed by
councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Wyatt
Waxhaw, Historic Ventures
seal the downtown deal
Mixed-use development
approved on second try
by Brian Carlton
brian@unioncountyweekly.com
For Historic Ventures, the second
time’s the charm. The Waxhaw
Town Council approved the estimated
$6 million downtown project March
23, granting the conditional-use permit
3-1 vote with Erin Kirkpatrick opposing.
Councilman Brett Diller recused himself
from the vote because he said he lives next
door to the property.
In October 2009, commissioners denied
the first Historic Ventures proposal, then a
298,000-square-foot, mixed-use development
with a civic center, hotel, day care,
apartments and offices at the corner of N.C.
16 and Price and Broad streets downtown.
The group has since revised plans, meeting
with local residents for input throughout
January and February. Apartments were
removed and the buildings’ heights were
reduced to calm fears that they’d tower
over older structures. The plan now totals
about 290,000 square feet.
“We are all very excited about the
decision we received (and) we can’t wait
to get started,” Ventures co-owner Lisa
Gioveniello said.
Commissioners outlined a list of conditions
that developers agreed to meet,
before approving the project. Historic Ventures
has submit an environmental-impact
statement, as well as conduct monthly
monitoring of water that’s piped across the
property to guarantee any change in water
pressure won’t affect neighboring land. As
for construction requirements, the developers
can’t work on Sundays or through
the early morning hours the of the week.
Developers also have a two-year moratorium
on submitting plans for the remaining
undeveloped portion of the land, where
apartments stood in the original plan.
“Our intent, by accepting all of the
conditions, is to work with the concerned
citizens on Broad Street, as well as other
adjacent property owners, and do our very
best to impact their lives as little as possible
during the construction of the project,”
Giovenniello said.
Next up, water and sewer
The town’s next step is securing water
and sewer rights from Union County,
which could get a little tricky. According
to Union County Public Works Director
Union County’s second Operation
Medicine Drop March 13 was a whopping
success, according to organizers, netting
35,630 doses of pills and liquid medications
– up nearly 30 percent from the
more than 27,000 collected at the first
event in October 2009.
Led by the Union County Sheriff’s
Office, Union County Public Schools
and Carolinas Medical Center-Union,
the medicine drop gave residents a place
to properly dispose of their unused or
outdated medications. The five collection
sites around the county busily bagged and
tagged the medications for disposal later
by federal law enforcement officers.
Safe and Drug Free Schools assistant
number of doses were collected at
each site:
Prepared for the job
When people think about a career in health care, their visions usually take them
to a hospital or medical office. As more and more aging adults find themselves
living into their 80s and 90s, however, the need for qualified health care
professionals to care for those folks has grown.
Michelle Hall has carved out just such a career in this growing field, serving as
the RN supervisor in charge of quality assurance at Autumn Care of Marshville.
Hall found her calling after completing the medical assisting and practical nursing
programs at South Piedmont Community College, then finishing up with her
nursing degree at Stanly Community College.
Date set for Wesley
Chapel-Land gun range
appeal
Wesley Chapel finally will present
its case against controversial private
gun-range owner Michael Land before
the North Carolina Court of Appeals in
Monroe on Monday, April 12 at 1 p.m.
at the Court of Appeals Building, 1 W.
Morgan St., Raleigh. The village has
appealed the 2009 Union County Superior
Court ruling upholding Land’s right
to fire weapons on his property at 1402
Bloomsberry Lane.
The court ruled July 19 for Land,
saying the doctor’s gun range, where
he fires high-powered weapons, doesn’t
violate county regulations. A threejudge
panel of John Martin, Barbara
Jackson and Cheri Beasley will hear
arguments, the latest development
in a continuing series of legal battles.
The village contends Land, 57, didn’t
comply with Union County or village
zoning regulations since he never
applied for a special-use or other permit
to operate the gun range in his backyard.
Neighbors have complained that
they’re afraid of the machine-gun fire,
which allegedly occurs a few hundred
feet from their backyards.
Wesley Chapel incorporated in 1998
and annexed Land’s property in 1999.
Land argued that because the gun
range was built in 1991, it falls under
the county-zoning ordinance in effect
at that time, which didn’t list a shooting
range as a regulated use. In May 2008,
Wesley Chapel adopted an ordinance
that made firing weapons in the municipality
illegal in most instances. The village
then ordered Land to stop shooting
at the property. Land appealed the
order with the Wesley Chapel Board
of Adjustment, which ruled for the
village. In January 2009, Land asked
for a superior court review of the
decision. q
Welcome Home Day
Vietnam veterans will be honored with
a special Welcome Home Day on Tuesday,
March 30, which the U.S. Senate
unanimously passed March 19 as a resolution
introduced by U.S. Sen. Richard Burr
of North Carolina. The county will fly the
Vietnam Service Medal Flag outside the government
center, 500 N. Main St., Monroe
on March 30 to mark the occasion.
“Our Vietnam Veterans did not receive
the recognition they deserved upon their
return home,” said Union County Veterans
Service Director Michelle Marcano. “The
unanimous passing by the U.S. Senate to
recognize March 30 as ‘Welcome Home
Vietnam Veterans Day’ shows this is long
overdue and well deserved.”
Burr said in a statement that the
resolution encourages communities across
the nation to designate the day to honor
“the return home of U.S. armed service
members after serving in Vietnam.” The
U.S. military began serving as advisors
to the South Vietnamese in 1961, with
ground combat troops sent in 1965. All
U.S. troops were withdrawn from on March
30, 1973, under the terms of the Treaty of
Paris, making March 30 an appropriate
day to establish Welcome Home Vietnam
Veterans Day, Burr said. q
Correction
In a March 19 article titled, “Wesley
Chapel considers acquiring Houston
House,” Union County Weekly incorrectly
stated the village wants to buy the home
and move it to a village park site. Wesley
Chapel is considering accepting the home
as a donation in partnership with the
Church of the Redeemer in Monroe, which
bought the land on which the homestead
stands. The donation would require the
village to spend $20,000-$30,000 to
Sheriff’s pretrial
program eases jail
crowding, already
saved taxpayers $100K
The Union County Sheriff’s Office
has reported that a new Pretrial Services
Program launched in October
2009 to help ease overcrowding at
the Union County Jail in Monroe has
been so successful in four months that
a planned jail expansion has been suspended
and the county has saved nearly
$100,000 in inmate housing.
The new program offers all criminal
defendants who originally couldn’t
post bail the opportunity to interview
for a supervised jail-release program
administered by Dottie Thomas, Union
County senior coordinator of pretrial
services. “I like to call the program jailpopulation
management,” Thomas said
in a statement.
“We try to keep the jail population
under the maximum capacity for
both the safety of the inmates and
the officers. We also strive to save the
taxpayers money by keeping people
who shouldn’t be in jail, out of jail.”
In January, the average daily jail
population was 260, four shy of the
jail’s 264-inmate maximum capacity,
Thomas said. At $69 per day to house
each inmate, the program had saved
taxpayers more than $91,000 by the
end of February, Thomas said.
Pretrial releases are mainly for defendants
accused of minor crimes who can
demonstrate they live in the community,
pose no threat of flight or danger
to the community at large and have no
history of violence or violent charges.
Thomas screens all jail inmates to identify
who may be eligible for pretrial
release, which the court determines.
She also receives referrals from defense
attorneys, judges and jail staff.
Thomas currently supervises 19
inmates; eight have completed the
program. She can accommodate up to
35 inmates. Only one defendant has
violated prerelease conditions to date,
she said.
Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey
said in a statement he’s pleased by the
program’s success so far, especially the
bed space it’s opened up. He won’t
expand until Thomas needs help, he
added. “She is taking a slow-growth
position.”
Cathey says the program’s not
a space cure-all, and some type of
jail expansion still could happen. In
February, county commissioners agreed
on a jail needs study of overcrowding
problems. q
communities said their HOAs weren’t
meeting regularly. The problem is these
boards are staffed by volunteers, so the
members come on and possibly don’t
know the responsibilities that come
with the position.”
The conference included sessions
to help with that problem, detailing an
overview of board duties and how to
handle them. Sessions also dealt with
enforcing neighborhood
ordinances and
managing collected
said should be a major
focus.
“I think it was a very good program,”
said new Indian Trail Town Manager
Joe Fivas. “I think we battled the
but I think it was well worth our
time.”
Stallings officials especially are
working to help older HOAs, which
sometimes are operating without
guidelines.
“(A) problem we often deal with
is older neighborhoods without covenants
or HOAs,” Stallings Mayor
Lynda Paxton said in an email.
“We have tried to help these communities
organize and set up communication,
particularly for neighborhood
crime-watch programs,” Paxton said.
Other organizations attending
included the Monroe Volunteer Fire
Department and the Union County
Sheriff’s Office, answering residents’
questions about everything from crime
to calls for service.
The UCNLF was formed in 2009 by
various HOA groups in Indian Trail and
quickly spread to the rest of the county.
The nonprofit organization hopes to
help HOAs, neighborhood leaders and
volunteers communicate better, determine
issues and provide solutions. q
Matilda
Matilda, the divine Miss M, like any self-respecting, double yellow Amazon parrot, thinks the
world exists purely for her pleasure. When she receives her share of praise, she responds with
an enthusiastic, “Am I the GIRL??!!!!” She’s well-socialized and, as you can see, has beautiful
markings. She’d love to be part of your family. Matilda is healthy and ready to go. Potential
parrot parents must take free Parrot 101 care classes. Matilda’s adoption fee ranges from $50 to
$250. For more information, call Parrot University in Pineville at 704-889-2325.
Crystal
Crystal is a lovely, sweet tuxedo kitty about a year old. She’s a mellow girl who enjoys being
petted but likes to be held for short times only. Unlike some young cats, Crystal is well-behaved
and doesn’t get into everything. She seems like she’d get along with other animals just fine.
Crystal loved her scratching toy from the moment she saw it. She’s spayed, tested leukemia/
aids negative and has her shots. Crystal’s adoption fee $85. If you’d like to adopt Crystal, e-mail
Rules
(continued from page 1)
threads that weave us together,” Chitwood
warns.
Chitwood advises wives to be helpers
and companions to husbands to
increase the sense of oneness in a
marriage. “Men will always gravitate
toward the loudest applause,” she says,
suggesting a husband needs encouragement,
not criticism, from his wife.
Chitwood knows whereof she
speaks. Married for 18 years, she and
Scott have struggled with many of the
issues she addresses.
“I sadly realized I had spent years
trying to figure out marriage my own
way. In fact, I spent a lot of years telling
my husband what he needed to do
instead of focusing on what I needed
to.”
Life would teach a different lesson.
Discovery and renewal
Seen through a Christian lens,
Chitwood leads her readers on a journey
of discovery and renewal. Using
Scripture and large doses of good common
sense, she navigates the complexities
and storms of married life, using
her and others’ experience and examples
to make her points. Her personal
story is a compelling example.
The couple met when they both
taught high school in Atlanta. At the
time, Scott was working on his pilot
license. “He was charming and handsome.
One of my main dreams growing
up was to get married, have children
and live happily ever after,” Melanie
recalled. “I was really thinking about
what I needed and how I could live
happily.”
Scott became a pilot, fly for US Airways,
a job that would eventually land
them in Charlotte in 2000, where they
thought “all their dreams would come
true.” By then the parents of two young
boys, Zachary, now 15, and Tyler, now
10, Melanie would find her days as a
stay-at-home mom stretching endlessly
before her.
She became bitter and resentful
toward Scott and not until she joined a
local Bible study, did her marriage and
life change. “I began to take my eyes
off myself. Instead, I began to focus on
God and as I did, my marriage changed
for the better,” she said.
It would be the life-altering events
on Sept. 11, 2001, that would once
again test their family’s faith. Scott was
laid off. They did a lot of soul-searching
and in the end Melanie concluded,
“Sure, Scott had lost a job but the
most valuable parts of our life were in
intact.
“So we made an everyday choice to
keep the faith and stay committed to
our dreams,” she said.
The choice paid off. Scott soon
found a job flying a corporate jet for
the Family Dollar Corporation.
Fast-forward to 2009. “My dream
and passion was always to encourage
and challenge women,” says Chitwood.
With that in mind, she decided to write
another book, “What a Wife Needs from
Her Husband.” This time she advised
men to take an honest assessment of
themselves and their marriages.
She suggests they list five top priorities
and asks them, “Does the investment
of your time, energy and money
reflect your priorities?” Her message is
love your wives with all your hearts, no
matter what the circumstances.
Chitwood knew her husband was
a “man of many dreams,” but didn’t
know his big plan would come along at
the same time she’d write that second
book. Scott, who always had a heart for
sports, dreamed of owning a basketball
and volleyball training facility with
year-round programs.
“After much prayer and a huge leap
of faith,” according to Melanie, Scott
quit his job and along with partner
Ron Esser, opened Carolina Courts,
a 44,000-square-foot facility at 7210
Stinson Hartis Road.
“This (past) year has presented lots
of challenges. We have had health and
extended issues, as well as the stress of
Carolina Courts co-owners Ron Esser (left)
and Scott Chitwood
me writing my book and Scott running
the business,” she admitted. “Most
times he works 10-hour days, six days
a week.”
While finishing her book, Melanie
also was busy taking care of the home
front and the boys. Scott agreed, “We
knew there would be long and stressful
days and that we would need to lean on
and be there to support one another.
We just could not have done it without
our faith in God and each other.”
“In retrospect we know we made the
right decision. We are committed to
one another and to each other’s dream,”
Melanie concluded. Sounds like a page
right out of one of her books. q
Portions designated a floodplain
One problem the town has to tackle
is that a portion of the park is designated
a North Carolina floodplain. Matthews
said town officials knew about
the issue, but hoped to resolve it without
any engineering studies. The state
refused to change the designation.
“The state took the position (that) it
was on the map, it was a floodplain,”
Matthews said, explaining that North
Carolina has to follow federal rules,
with no wiggle room.
If the floodplain proved unusable,
Matthews said, the town would have to
revise the park plan, perform additional
grading and lose the use of the area
now planned for an athletic field.
The town council authorized staffers
March 22 to file a request that the
state change the designation of the
area from a floodplain to shaded zone
X. That basically means North Carolina
still recognizes the area as a floodplain,
but one without any use restrictions.
The council is scheduled to discuss
the parks plan and whether to approve
the additional cost at its April 12
meeting. q
Stallings, Matthews to discuss joint business park venture
Stallings Commissioners will meet with their Matthews colleagues March 29 to discuss
the possibility of building a business park that straddles both town limits – and
splits the tax revenue.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in room 2215 of Central Piedmont Community
College’s Levine Campus in Matthews, 2800 Campus Ridge Road. Calling the meeting
“very preliminary,” Matthews Mayor Jim Taylor said a Huntersville official will address the
group about how similar joint ventures there have paid off.
Officials haven’t pinpointed an exact location where they would like to build, but Taylor
said undeveloped land off John Street near Interstate 485 is one option. The land is
privately owned, he said. q
offers yet, just verbal inquiries.
Kaufman Hall also was authorized
to continue negotiations with Carolinas
HealthCare System about a current
lease extension. The two sides met
March 24 for preliminary discussions,
Finnerty said.
Commissioners said they wanted to
see who, including current hospital leaseholder
Carolinas HealthCare System, is
interested in taking on a long-term lease
or buying the hospital outright.
“I believe in competition; I want to
see what’s out there,” county commissioner
Chairwoman Kim Rogers said.
The county is considering selling the
hospital property, 600 Hospital Drive in
Monroe, to help pay down more than
$600 million in debt. CHS still has 10
years left on its current lease, which was
originally signed in 1995. So far, at least
12 companies have expressed interest.
They include Nashville, Tenn.-based
Vanguard Health Systems, Universal
Health Services in Fort Worth, Texas
and RegionalCare Hospital Partners in
Brentwood, Tennessee. Now Kaufman
Hall will request official statements of
interest from each group.
Property purchase price estimates have
ranged from $178 million to $280 million,
depending on whether a buyer assumes
the current lease or negotiates to break it.
However, Finnerty cautioned that there
were variables at play here that Kaufman
Hall has never dealt with before.
“We’ve never completed a transaction
where there’s this long (a period) left on
the lease,” Finnerty said. “It’s a mitigating
factor. Does it lower the proceeds
you get? Quite possibly.”
Kaufman Hall representatives also
explained to commissioners that a flatout
sale would come with less risk than
a long-term lease.
“During the 40-year lease, the operator
could have to replace (the hospital)
building,” Finnerty said. “They file a
new certificate of need with the state,
locate another location, get a new building
and then you’re left holding the bag,”
Finnerty said.
Finnerty explained that more and
more companies are leaning toward
long-term leases because the property
isn’t theirs and they don’t have to pay
property taxes on it.
“But at the end of the day, with a
lease you still own the property; (the
county has) that revenue coming in,”
Commissioner Parker Mills Jr. said.
Mills argued that the county didn’t need
to take control of the hospital back from
CHS, because its track record was less
than stellar.
“The county didn’t do a good job of
running the hospital,” Mills said. “That’s
what led up to 1995 and (the deal) with
CMS. We’re much better than where we
were.”
Commissioners also told Kaufman
Hall the county wants some additional
elements in any proposal. Those requests
include paying for more nurses in the
Historic Ventures
(continued from page 3)
Ed Goscicki, the property currently is allocated
for 6,000 gallons per day. However,
UCPW estimates anticipate Historic Ventures
will require 65,000 gallons per day
when built out.
“Of course we must now apply for water
and sewer and are confident we will get
what we need,” Giovenniello said, adding
that all 65,000 gallons wouldn’t be needed
at once. Instead, as capacity becomes available,
the project will grow piece by piece.
Community
Union County Public School system,
requiring the hospital to cover the costs
and care for patients at the jail, increasing
the number of ambulances and
detailing each hospital applicant’s level
of commitment to charity care, such as
free and low-income clinics. q
However, Historic Ventures isn’t on the
current list of commercial or residential
projects allocated water or sewer under the
county’s plan and UCPW hasn’t estimated
when that additional capacity will be available.
Giovenniello said her company just
is happy to be moving forward to a point
where they can break ground.
“We remain committed to the public
process we have employed during
the rezoning and will continue to reach
out to the community for their input,”
Giovenniello said. q
Letters to the editor
Thanks Kissell for health care stand
While we’re disappointed with the outcome
of the latest health care vote, on behalf
of North Carolina’s small businesses I want
to thank Rep. (Larry) Kissell for standing
up for small business and voting against the
health care bill that threatens the ability of
so many small business owners to operate
and grow their businesses.
Not only does this health care bill spend
$900 billion we don’t have, but it’s paid for on
the backs of small business. The facts are clear:
This bill will raise insurance costs and will
increase both taxes and the cost of doing business
for the very people they said they wanted
to help – small businesses. This is not the
reform small business asked for or can afford.
We couldn’t have been clearer how damaging
this bill will be to North Carolina’s
small businesses and the economic recovery
of this country. Instead, this bill dumps
disproportionate costs and mandates on
small businesses, and provides unfair exemptions
for big business and labor unions. It’ll
only result in more job losses and shuttered
businesses here in North Carolina during an
unprecedented recession.
The National Federation of Independent
Business/North Carolina commends Kissell
for doing the right thing and voting for small
business. He’s been an independent voice who
understands that small businesses are vital to
our economic recovery. We need more representatives
in Washington like Kissell who’re
willing to take hard votes to protect the interest
of small businesses. Maybe then our nation’s
job creators wouldn’t have to worry so much
about the agenda being pursued in Washington
and get back to running their business and
helping to get our economy on track.
Transparency and hypocrisy
In recent weeks, former Councilman
Dan Schallenkamp has appeared at Indian
Trail council meetings demanding compete
openness and transparency by its elected
officials. While seemingly noble, such
demands run counter to Dan’s prior tenure
on the council.
A case in point was the $1.2 million
purchase of the Blythe building in 2008
for use as the town hall. Mr. Schallenkamp
spearheaded the purchase and then opposed
the planned construction of a suitable new
town hall building across the street from the
Blythe building. Dan, instead, demanded
multiple traffic-flow studies of the new
building in an apparent attempt to kill such
project, but none for the Blythe property.
No formal study on the Blythe building’s
suitability for town hall use was ever
required or performed. Instead, council
members hastily voted in closed sessions
held in May and June 2007, and devoid of
public input and expert review, to simply pay
the full asking price of $1.2 million for the
property (which had been unsuccessfully up
for sale the preceding four years).
The Blythe purchase was completed in
2008 and was shortly found to be overpriced
and deficient in needed office space. Former
town Councilwoman Shirley Howe later
said at an August 2008 council meeting that
the “unfortunate” 2007 town council vote
to purchase the Blythe building had been
based on misleading, improper information.
Why did the Blythe purchase occur
behind a veil of secrecy and misdirected
information? Perhaps, some special
favors or cronyism were involved? Clearly,
Mr. Schallenkamp, in his demand for greater
transparency and openness of government,
has some explaining to do.
E-mail Name Our Bypass, christen a road
By April 22, Union County hopes to have some snazzy names from which to
choose a worth-remembering moniker for the upcoming Monroe bypass. Sure,
“The Union County Parkway” is nice. No town is “bypassed,” no town singled out
positively or negatively. County Commissioners considered it March 15 and are
still looking. But just think, you could name a road.
Residents can send in suggestions for bypass names to a new e-mail address:
NameOurBypass@co.union.nc.us. The e-mail address also can be accessed from
the county Web site home page: www.co.union.nc.us.
The submission deadline is April 22. County staffers are scheduled to present a
list of possible names to commissioners on May 3. q
Nature, nests, fun and feathers
Raptor Center’s day camps offer campers plenty
of eco-friendly lessons, activities and summertime fun
by Anna Dykema
anna@unioncountyweekly.com
Think Carolina Raptor Center’s
summer day camps are all about
birds, feathers, flight and fowls?
Think again. For the past seven years,
the Huntersville-based nonprofit has
hosted Kids for Conservation Summer
Day Camps, educating its young participants
on the importance of conversation,
wildlife and sustainability amid
the center’s natural setting. The goal,
said Carolina Raptor Center’s Camp
Director Heather Bofill, is to engage
and inspire campers to make environmentally
conscious decisions and graduate
from the camp experience with
knowledge they can then pass along to
family and friends.
In addition to its three staple camps
– Wings of Wonder; the Harry Potter-inspired
Hawkwarts: A Camp for
Muggles; and Radical Raptor Adventures,
offered to campers ages 7 to 14
years – this summer a new camp is
slated to join the mix: Eager Eaglets,
specifically themed for 4- to 6-yearolds.
Similar to its predecessor camps,
Eager Eaglets will focus on educating
campers about relevant topics to make
them more conscious earth stewards,
said Bofill.
Unique experiences, she added,
including photography, canoeing, hiking,
geocaching – a scavenger hunt
challenging campers to use GPS coordinates
to locate various points along
wooded trails – wildlife presentations
and overnight adventures are planned
for each camp to ensure fun is a big
part of the camp equation.
“During the overnight campout, we
take campers on a nighttime hike,”
said Bofill, noting it’s often one
of the most anticipated events.
“We learn about how animals use
their senses and are active during
the night. The kids love it because
they think it is spooky and scary
and have fun doing it.
“Another day we have a water
theme where kids go canoeing,
play water games and learn about
(water) environments.”
Although camp agendas vary
with different themes and target
audiences, they share basic commonalties,
she added. “All campers
will have four raptor encounters
during the week – a chance for
campers to sit or stand directly in front
of the birds. One day we may do a hawk
lesson, the next an owl lesson. So not
only will campers be able to learn about
the species, they’ll also be able to learn
about the species’ role in our environment,
the human impact we have on
each and why we need to help protect
them.”
For the birds ... flora and fauna
Camps are more than about our
feathered friends, Bofill said. “Campers
will learn about reptiles, flora and
fauna, recycling. Every game and activity
is environmentally focused.”
In recent years the most popular
camp has been Hawkwarts: A Camp for
Muggles, she said.
“It really incorporates the environmental
theme, but also focuses
on the science behind it. One of the
(Hawkwarts) classes is Care of Magical
Creatures,” she said, noting one day
during the weeklong camp, Hawkwarts
participants get the opportunity
to dress up as wizards and other Harry
Potter characters. “We teach campers
how to take care of our birds and in
the past also have taken them to visit
the equestrian center and also done a
reptile presentation. It’s about how we
care for those creatures, and even more
about the science (involved) in that.
“Everyday magic is really science
(based).”
As part of the center’s focus on making
students more conscious of their
impact on the world, Bofill said campers
are required to pack lunches using
as little packaging as possible, encouraging
reusable Tupperware and lunch
boxes.
“At the end of each day we weigh
trash. Our goal is to keep reducing the
weight of the trash (we accumulate)
each day,” Bofill explained.
“We hope that, not only will campers
walk away better stewards of the environment,
but they will share the lessons
they learn with others. This could
really have a ripple affect. Maybe next
school year they will pack their lunches
in recyclable lunch bags and use a permanent
water bottle instead of plastic
water bottles and they’ll encourage
their friends to do the same.
“We want them to be ambassadors
for the environment.” q
“You don’t want anyone hurt, but there’s
As soon as Liz Rounds heard the “pop,”
she knew what had happened.
She knew because, as a club soccer
player, she’d attended several classes geared
toward preventing the injury. She knew
that, most likely, her soccer season was over
and that she wouldn’t be able to attend a
vital recruiting showcase event the following
weekend, one in which several college
coaches were attending just to see her play.
Of course, the fact that the opposing
coach was telling her to stay on the ground
while motioning for the Porter Ridge athletic
trainers was an indication that others
heard the “pop” sound as well.
On March 30, 2009, Rounds made
a move to keep a Hickory Ridge player
from getting the ball on the sideline. She
stepped with her right foot and started to
take a step with her left before her knee
buckled inward, tearing the anterior
cruciate ligament in her left knee.
“It was a ‘Why her?’ kind of a thing,”
Porter Ridge coach Ron Ladimir recalled
thinking at the time. “With so much
potential, wanting to play college ball and
Marvin Ridge High School softball
coach Kevin Allran said there’s a simple
reason his team is off to a 9-0 start to the
season: The Mavericks are excelling in
some of the diamond’s tried-and-true fundamentals.
“We’ve hit the ball very well, played
some pretty good defense and it seems
that the pitching’s been great all the way
around,” he said.
Allran said the team has battled injuries
this spring, but the Mavericks are
approaching full strength for the first
time this season. That has to be scary for
Marvin Ridge opponents, considering the
Mavericks sport a .367 team batting average
and have scored 81 runs while allowing
just seven.
Field of tears
Rounds first started playing soccer
because of her sister, Kaitlyn, who’s two
years older. Kaitlyn played on a team, so
their dad, Jake, signed Liz up as well. But
it was hardly love at first sight.
“I did not want to play soccer,” she
remembered with a laugh.
In fact, Rounds recalls crying hysterically
when it came time for her to step on
the field.
“But as soon as I went on the field, I loved
it,” she said. “I haven’t stopped since.”
Well, she stopped long enough to give
some other sports a try along the way. She
was a gymnast from the second grade until
high school, though her participation was
more about wasting time until soccer
came back around – not that it didn’t have
some obvious benefits on the pitch.
“It got my flexibility up, which helps a
lot with soccer,” she explained. “It helps
with my throw-ins and being able to get
to certain balls other people can’t because
my body can move that way.”
(see Action on page 17)
“Different people have stepped up and
done some different things,” Allran said.
“It’s been a total team effort.”
A big part of the success has been utility
player Erin Robertson, who has played
five different positions this season, “sometimes
without a lot of practice at any of
them,” said Allran.
“She’s made a conscious effort to be
better and has worked really hard,” he
continued. “She’s really stepped up this
year and done a fantastic job.”
Allran also explained that this season’s
team is the best defensive squad he’s had
in his three years at Marvin Ridge, despite
the fact that he has four freshmen and two
sophomores in the lineup.
“Our chemistry on the team is really
good,” he said. “They really like each
other, and that’s a dream come true for a
coach.”
Porter Ridge High School girls soccer player will enroll at UNC Charlotte this fall to play for the
49ers.
Of course, having the tandem of
pitcher Caitlyn Kurtz and catcher Erin
Kayton doesn’t hurt, either. Kurtz has
registered 73 strikeouts and allowed only
three earned runs. Backup Peyton Jordan
also has been solid, said Allran.
As hot as their start has been, the
Mavericks have a tough slate ahead, with
games against Anson (Friday, March
26), Parkwood (Tuesday, March 30) and
Charlotte Myers Park (Wednesday, March
31).
“We’re getting into the meat of our conference
schedule now,” said Allran. “We’re
getting those situations ironed out. We
know we have a battle on our hands for
the rest of the year.”
Union County all-conference
basketball teams
Marvin Ridge’s T.J. Tolbert and
Parkwood’s Maurice Leak were named
Boys Co-Players of the year in the Southern
Carolina 3A/4A conference.
Leak was joined on the all- conference
team by his brother, Marcus. Sun Valley
had a trio of honorees in Jalen
Witherspoon, Shaun Stewart and Luke
Maynor who were joined by Weddington’s
Bennett Rutherford.
Ten girls players were honored by the
league, headlined by Co-Players of the
Year Morgan Brown (Parkwood) and Kelly
Godbout (Porter Ridge). Sun Valley’s
Stephanie Taylor and Jordan Gaymon
made the team, as did Marvin Ridge’s
Chelsea Horan and Jordan Henry. Brown
was joined by teammates Michelle Brown
and Tori Tsitouris. Porter Ridge’s Raven
Falls also was selected, as was Weddington’s
Sam Sebastian.
Action
(continued from page 16)
But all the time, Rounds focused on
soccer, whether it was playing in leagues
or kicking the ball in the driveway while
playing soccer tennis, a game she and her
sister picked up at a soccer camp.
When she was 9, Rounds made a select
club team in Charlotte. Suddenly, she realized
she could have a future in the sport.
“I felt the difference in the speed of play
(while on the club team) and how the players
moved, picked up their heads and saw
everyone,” she said. “It was an eye-opener.
I could do this and keep going higher and
higher. I wanted to push myself to do that,
so it felt natural, I guess, to want to challenge
myself.”
So she did. By the time she got to the
high school level she was ready and contributed
immediately in the midfield for the
Pirates. Her sophomore year, she moved to
forward and promptly had 16 goals and 26
assists, earning her an all-state nod.
At that point, all she needed was an
equally productive junior year to solidify
her chance of fulfilling her dream to play
college soccer. Unfortunately, fate had
other plans.
Down but not out
Before the injury, Wingate, Mars Hill,
the Charlotte 49ers and Western Carolina
were starting to show some interest in
Rounds. But she figured her chances were
dashed with the injury.
“Especially with the (Division I)
schools,” said Rounds. “I thought, ‘They’re
never going to think I’m the same player
again or they’re going to have doubts about
me.’ But I still got some e-mails that said
they were thinking about me and don’t
completely shut them out.”
She didn’t. In fact, she even attended
the Wingate and 49er camps that summer.
Her first choice always had been the 49ers,
so when coach John Cullen approached
Rounds during the camp about committing
to them, even though Rounds still was hobbled
with the injury, she was ecstatic. There
was one catch: The 49ers weren’t prepared
to offer her a scholarship, so she would
have to earn one as a recruited walk-on.
“I was completely in shock and in love
with the atmosphere and everything about
it,” she gushed. “He told me to talk to my
parents and give him an answer.
“We just decided that because I was
always in love with that school, I couldn’t
pass that up,” she reasoned.
Before she could suit up for the 49ers,
Rounds needed to earn her way back on
the Pirates’ field. Throughout the offseason
she pushed through rehabilitation
and physical therapy. And by the time this
spring rolled around, she was ready to go.
On March 1, Rounds took the field in
the team’s first scrimmage against East
Mecklenburg, and she’s played in every
game since.
There are still moments of hesitation
and doubt, especially on tackles, said
Rounds. Ladimir admits to taking it easy
with her so far, even pulling her out of
some games at crucial moments just to
make sure she wasn’t rushing her return.
Ladimir said Rounds isn’t the type to complain
or ask out of a game or practice drill,
so he stays vigilant, looking for limps and
stumbles. So far, so good, he said.
Cuthbertson and Cody Esser; Forest
Hills’ Dre Huntley and Markell Lotharp;
and Monroe’s Issac Blakeney, Qwadarius
Duboise and Jamison Crowder.
Crowder was named Player of the Year,
while Monroe’s Johnny Sowell was named
The Rocky River all-conference girls
list included Monroe’s Dequisha McCain
and Shakira Jordan; Piedmont’s Jade
Montgomery earned Player of the Year,
Rounds has scored six goals and
notched four assists for the 5-1-2 Pirates.
But no amount of goals can beat the feeling
she got when she first stepped on the
field this spring.
“It was amazing,” said Rounds. “I felt
like a freshman all over again because
I had twice as many butterflies as I had
in the past. It was so good, though. It felt
good to touch a ball and to be playing with
the team again.” q
Blakeney, Hallice make all-star game
The 19th Annual Charlotte All-Star
Classic, held at Charlotte’s Providence
Day School on March 27, will feature a
pair of Union County basketball players.
Metrolina Christian Academy’s T.J.
Hallice will play for the West team while
Monroe’s Issac Blakeney each will suit up
for the East boys team.
The All-Star Classic features some of
the region’s top seniors. The girls game is
at 12:30 p.m., while the boys tip off at 2.
Tickets are $7.
The 6-foot-9 Hallice, who signed with
Gardner-Webb, helped the Warriors to a
16-10 overall record. Blakeney, a 6-6 Duke
football recruit, anchored the Redhawks’
run to the Class 1A state championship.
Hallice and Blakeney are the first Union
County players to play in the All-Star Classic
since Monroe’s Jeanette and Willette
Oxner joined Sun Valley’s Spring Drake in
the 2008 Charlotte All-Star Classic. q
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
A guide to events, organizations and people in the community
Ahoy, mateys!
‘Treasure Island’ has thrills aplenty
by Jackie Lupo
AandE@unioncountyweekly.com
In “Treasure Island,” Ron Ludwig’s
adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson
story now at the Children’s Theatre of
Charlotte, we meet a boy on the cusp of
manhood, proper English folk who aren’t as
smart as they look, and some pirates who
are as nasty as they come.
Set in the late 1700s, “Treasure Island”
takes us on the adventures of Jim Hawkins
(Isaac Josephthal), a teenage boy who
helps his widowed mother run the Admiral
Benbow Inn, a tavern on the coast of
England. Unfortunately for the Hawkins
family, the tavern is occasionally visited by
sailors on leave – and not just any old sailors,
but pirates!
“Treasure Island” taught us everything
we think we know about pirates. Violent?
Check. Badly dressed? Check. Fond of
drink? Check. Likely to be missing limbs,
eyes and other body parts? Check.
History tells us that Robert Louis
Stevenson wasn’t exaggerating when he
created the crew of hard-drinking, swordwielding
knaves we meet onstage here.
Pirates did sail the seas in the 1700s. One
EntEr to Win 2 tickEts!
SO MUCH HAPPENED BEFORE DOROTHY DROPPED IN.
of the most famous, “Blackbeard,” concentrated
on robbing ships near the Carolina
coast. With a long black beard and a hat
under which he hid slow-burning matches
so his head appeared to be smoking, he was
a frightening figure indeed. In fact, his reputation
was so bad that many sea captains
surrendered to him without a fight. When
not robbing ships at sea, he hid out along the
coast of North Carolina. But he finally met
his match in 1718 when an expedition sent
out by the governor of Virginia managed to
kill him at sea.
By the time Robert Louis Stevenson
wrote his adventure story for boys in 1883,
the legends of Blackbeard and other pirates
already were part of popular culture. But in
creating “Treasure Island,” Stevenson came
up with a group of pirates as unforgettable
as the real pirates in history books.
The CTC production brings Stevenson’s
characters to life in vivid detail. We know Jim
is in for trouble when the door to the tavern
flies open and in walks Billy Bones (Chad
Calvert), one of the most unsavory villains
who ever swabbed a deck. Billy, a less-wellgroomed
lookalike for Hagrid of Hogwarts,
would be comical if he weren’t so threatening.
He takes over the tavern, scaring the village
folk silly and drinking tankard after tankard of
rum, while young Jim does his best to keep
him placated so he doesn’t kill anybody.
But Jim’s troubles only are beginning. It
turns out Billy is on the run because he’s
stolen a treasure map, and sure enough,
some even worse characters soon show up
at the tavern door. Bill slips the map to Jim,
who finds himself its unwilling owner after
the pirates fight it out with flashing swords
and knives. Audiences will find the swordplay
excitingly realistic and dangerous.
When naïve Jim reveals to his friends,
the noble Dr. Livesey and the effete Squire
Trelawney (Ashby Blakely), that he has a
treasure map, they decide to go in search of
the treasure themselves. It’s while the trio
is at the waterfront assembling a crew for
the expedition that Jim meets Long John
Silver, one of the most memorable characters
from children’s literature.
Mark Sutton has brought the character
of Long John Silver to life in all his complexity.
John Silver is not a cardboard
villain. He has a backstory: He once was an
upstanding citizen and honest seaman but
became a pirate after he was injured. He
has a grotesque peg leg that doesn’t seem
to slow him down a bit as he schemes to
win Jim’s confidence, leading the band of
cutthroats and thieves he and Jim recruited
as crew of the “Hispaniola.”
The voyage to Treasure Island and the
group’s adventures once there could fill
several hours on the stage, but Ken Ludwig
has captured the high points of the story
and keeps the action quickly moving.
This show has wonderful production
quality, with evocative scenery and costumes
by Bob Croghan. The clever staging, atmospheric
lighting, ominous background music
and sound effects literally will shiver your
timbers. One ingenious piece of scenery is
the top deck of the ship, complete with functioning
sails. The backdrop for the mysterious
island itself features mysterious lighting and
all sorts of weird plants in ghostly silhouettes,
capturing the mood perfectly.
The producers of this show recommend
it for children over age 10, and that seems
to be about right. Some of the characters
and events may be downright scary to
younger children. But older ones will enjoy
the danger and excitement happening
onstage. “Treasure Island” makes movies
such as “Pirates of the Caribbean” look like
Saturday morning cartoons. q
“Treasure Island” continues through Sunday,
March 28 at the McColl Family Theatre
at ImaginOn, 300 E. Seventh St., Charlotte.
Join the crowd at Jimmie’s
by Charles Jenkin
culinary@unioncountyweekly.com
A robust breakfast crowd, a lunch bunch
that rushes in and a steady stream of dinner
diners keep Mint Hill’s Jimmie’s Restaurant
abuzz. In between main mealtimes, there’s
still a consistent number of folks flowing in
and out at a pretty good clip. Most impressive,
though, was a few Saturday mornings ago,
when I decided to visit for breakfast. This was
the busiest I’d seen a restaurant in a while, this
early. The Jimmie’s Restaurant morning crowd
had created a substantial waiting list and a
packed foyer. Keep in mind that Jimmie’s seats
200 guests. I was delighted to see the dining
rooms packed with a steady wait; not that I love
to wait, but having owned a restaurant, it was
the kind of crowd that you dream about becoming
a reality.
In 1953, Jimmie and Ronnie Pourlos opened
Jimmie’s Restaurant on Elizabeth Street in
Charlotte, across from Central Piedmont Community
College. They concentrated on madefrom-scratch
cooking, everyday fare, comfort
foods and Italian specialties, all offered at very
reasonable prices. Jimmie retired in his late
80s and his two sons, Chris and Gregory, took
helm of the eatery. The place was so successful
it survived in the same location for about 50
years until CPCC bought the property and the
restaurant moved to Mint Hill. Chris runs the
Mint Hill location, now a town staple for more
than five years.
diced tomatoes; it’s a delicious harmony of
flavors with plenty of ingredients, prepared and
cooked to perfection. Other options include
a veggie, cheese, ham, bacon or sausage and
cheese, along with a Western, Spanish and a
chicken fajita omelet, which has chicken, onion,
pepper, cheddar and pico de gallo. Again, each
omelet arrives with all the chosen sides. Belgian
waffles, pancakes, French toast, breakfast
sandwiches and wraps all are available, as well
as Eggs Benedict. For a change, try the Irish
Benedict with its addition of corned beef hash.
Breakfast is served weekdays until 11 a.m. and
weekends until noon, so sleep late.
Like the breakfast menu, the full menu
offers all the basics for which Jimmie’s has
been known for all these years. For appetizers,
you can definitely wing it. Plump, moist
good-size chicken wings are offered hot or mild,
as a half or full dozen. The menu also includes
homemade chips with ranch dressing, handbattered
onion rings and recently added fried
pickles with ranch, another Southern favorite.
Salad dressings are homemade for the salad
selections, which include a couple of unique
items, such as the Taco salad and the Popeye
salad, which is made with spinach, marinated
artichoke hearts, crumbled bacon, fresh mushrooms,
cucumbers, hard-boiled egg and croutons.
Make it “all the way” with the addition of
grilled salmon and feta cheese. Try a bowl of
any of the daily soups; they are all homemade
from scratch.
Menu basics include a multitude of
sandwiches, subs and wraps. Cheeseburgers,
classic clubs and homemade chicken and tuna
salads always are good choices. Consider the
BLT, meatball sub or Philly cheesesteak, longtime
favorites. Newer menu items include the
Cuban sandwich, marinated roast pork, ham,
Swiss cheese and pickles on a grilled hoagie
roll; the grilled turkey wrap and the chicken
Caesar wrap.
Biscuits and jam
The morning menu is chock-full of everything
considered great starts to the day. Breakfast
favorites are served with a choice of grits,
hash browns or home fries and toast or biscuits.
First, I highly recommend getting the
home fries, crispy seasoned bites of potato with
sautéed onions and peppers; perfectly cooked
and so flavorful, they pair well with the eggs.
‘Hot Tub Time Machine’
(From left) Clark Duke, Craig Robinson, John Cusack and Rob Corddry
“Hot Tub Time Machine” may sound like
a bad comedy almost by definition. I mean,
how good can a movie named “Hot Tub
Time Machine” possibly be? Yes? That’s not
what I thought. I saw the stand-up display
in a movie lobby and perked up. With a title
like that, the filmmakers aren’t lacking in
confidence. There was also the item of John
Cusack in the lead. As a general rule, he isn’t
found in bad films.
I wasn’t disappointed. This is a step or
two below “The Hangover,” but occupying
similar turf. It’s another guy picture, which
is like a buddy picture except usually without
cops. The guys bond, they seek to relive
‘The Bounty Hunter’
I’m on the brink of declaring a new entry
for Ebert’s Little Movie Glossary: No comedy
not titled “Caddyshack” has ever created
a funny joke involving a golf cart. The only
thing preventing me is that I can’t remember
if “Caddyshack” had golf cart jokes. In any
event, if there is a golf cart, it will sooner or
later drive into a water hazard. The funny
angle here is that the filmmakers went to all
that trouble because they trusted the audience
to laugh.
I stared with glazed eyes at “The Bounty
Hunter.” Here is a film with no need to exist.
Among its sins is the misuse of Jennifer Aniston,
who can be and has been very funny, but
not in dreck like this. Lacking any degree of
character development, it handcuffs her to
a plot of exhausted action comedy cliches –
and also to a car door and a bed.
The handcuffer is her former husband,
Milo (Gerard Butler), a former cop who is
now a bounty hunter and draws the assignment
of tracking down his ex-wife, who has
Page 20 • March 26-April 1, 2010 • Union County Weekly
their misspent youth, there are women and
even wives around but they’re strictly in supporting
roles.
A 40-something party animal named Lou
(Rob Corddry) gets drunk and passes out
after he unwisely guns his car engine in time
to the music while parked in his garage and
listening to Motley Crue. This is interpreted
as a suicide attempt by his best friends
Adam (John Cusack) and Nick (Craig Robinson),
and although he tells him they’re
mistaken, they’re not so sure. They’re worried
about their friend. He’s a full-bore, fulltime
alcoholic without a shred of maturity
or caution. What this boy obviously requires
is a return to the ski lodge where they all
got blasted together in the 1980s. Over
Lou’s protests, they drag along Jacob (Clark
Duke), Adam’s nephew. Adam wants to keep
him out of trouble (hollow laugh).
Today, this lodge is so shabby it looks not
only like a poor excuse for a ski resort but
even like a poor excuse for a movie set. That’s
part of the movie’s charm. Did the Marx
Brothers ever lavish money on sets? (Well,
skipped bail. Have I lost touch here, or are
bounty hunters routinely deployed to track
down criminals accused of no more than a
non-fatal traffic violation? Never mind.
Let’s do a little mental exercise here,
the same sort that the screenplay writer,
Sarah Thorp, must have done. Remember
the ground rules: The movie must contain
only cliches. I used to test this exercise on
my film class. I’d give them the genre, and
begin sentences ending with an ellipsis.
They’d compete to be first to shout out the
answer. You try it.
1. The story involves a formerly married
couple. He is a bounty hunter tracking
Grade: H1/2 out of 4
language and some violence
yes, but never mind.) The check-in routine
is from Motel Hell, and the surly one-armed
bellboy (Crispin Glover) kicks their luggage
around, dumps it on the floor, and sticks out
his remaining hand for a tip.
They get the same big room they had
before. It’s gone downhill. The hot tub seems
to harbor growth from the Planet of Mold.
But there’s a cheerful repairman (Chevy
Chase), who plays the role that George
Burns used to play when you needed a guy
who just looked like he knew the secrets of
the universe. Chevy fixes the tub and it starts
to bubble with an inner glow, like beer on
the simmer. The guys jump in and are magically
transported back in time to their youth
in the 1980s. Jacob hadn’t been born then,
but never mind; it’s their present selves who
are transported.
This then becomes the premise for a
comedy contriving more or less every possible
problem and paradox, of which the
high point is possibly Nick’s boozy phone
call to his wife, who at the time is still in
grade school. A pretty girl named April
(Lizzy Caplan) catches Adam’s eye, although
strict logic suggests they have little future
together. And Corddry essentially steals the
movie as Lou.
Remember how Corddry was always
so earnest and sincere when assuring Jon
Stewart of outrageous facts on “The Daily
Show”? He brings the same focus to getting
drunk. Comedy is a delicate art, with nothing
so important as the performer never seeming
to believe anything he does is funny. Corddry
here achieves a level of comic confidence
that seems almost uncanny; Cusack, as coproducer,
and Steve Pink, the director (who
wrote Cusack’s “High Fidelity” and “Grosse
Point Blank”), must have intuited this gift
and been willing to give him free rein.
I can’t be sure, but I think the density
of the f-word reaches the saturation point
in “Hot Tub Time Machine.” I may have
heard it employed as three different parts of
speech in the same sentence. One wonders
if American-spoken English could survive
without it. What did we say in the old days?
It must have been a quiet land.
(2) they will fall back in love; (3) vintage
The bottom line is, gross-out guy
comedies open twice a month, and many of
them are wretched excesses. “Hot Tub Time
Machine,” which wants nothing more than
to be a screwball farce, succeeds beyond
any expectations suggested by the title,
and extends John Cusack’s remarkable run:
Since 1983, in 55 films, he’s never made
a bad one. Well, I never saw “Grandview,
USA.” q
it’s Atlantic City; (7) wins big or loses big,
but either way ... ; (8) gangsters; (9) chase
scenes, CGI sequences, impossible action
and lots of shots of her running in high
heels; (10) you know; (11) in the crotch;
(12) peek down her neckline.
Why, oh why, was this movie necessary?
Could it have been redeemed by witty dialogue?
Perhaps, but neither character is
allowed to speak more than efficient sentences
serving to further the plot. Hollywood
movies started to simplify the dialogue when
half the gross started to roll in from overseas.
Has anyone noticed the great majority
of nations dub foreign movies, so that
subtitles aren’t a problem?
Gerard Butler is a handsome hunk who
can also act; he’s currently starring in Ralph
Fiennes’ “Coriolanus.” Jennifer Aniston is a
gifted comedienne. If you could pay their
salaries, wouldn’t you try to put them in a
better movie than this?
I saw the poster and had a sinking feeling
the title gave away the whole story. q
Marketplace Guidelines
All ads must be paid in advance.
All ads must be submitted in written
form, by e-mail, mail, fax or in
person. Ad rates are based on the
number of words in an ad. Four sizes
are available: 30 words, 60 words,
90 words and 120 words. CWNG
defines words as follows: any group
of two or more characters, separated
by a space, counts as a word. All
groups of numbers count as one
word. Phone numbers count as one
word.
How to submit a classified
line ad:
To ensure accuracy, CWNG does
not accept classified ads by phone.
Ads may be placed on the website
(www.carolinaweeklynewspapers.
com). That will take you to a page
where an e-mailable and printable
form is available for both submitting
and purchasing marketplace ads.
Ads may also be faxed to 704-849-
2504, or may be placed in person
at the Carolina Weekly office located
at 1421-C Orchard Lake Drive,
Charlotte, NC 28270 from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m, Monday - Friday.
Deadline for ads is 10 a.m.,
Monday before each Friday’s
paper
ALL MARKETPLACE ADS MUST
BE PAID IN ADVANCE
How to pay for an ad:
