Center, which supports grandparents ra<strong>is</strong>ing<br />
children; and <strong>Grow</strong>ing <strong>Health</strong>y Lives Toge<strong>the</strong>r,<br />
which provides <strong>old</strong>er adults <strong>with</strong> healthy living education<br />
and workshops, one-on-one coaching and<br />
healthy congregate dining events to promote<br />
healthier lifestyle so that <strong>old</strong>er adults can age in<br />
place in <strong>the</strong>ir neighborhoods.<br />

Currently, SOWN reaches almost 1,000 <strong>old</strong>er<br />
wo<strong>me</strong>n and nearly 50 SOWN groups are <strong>me</strong>eting<br />
regularly throughout Philadelphia. SOWN also<br />
provides individual counseling, advocacy, and leadership<br />
training. As <strong>old</strong>er adults continue to face<br />
complex <strong>is</strong>sues related to aging, SOWN continues<br />
to help <strong>the</strong>m face <strong>the</strong>se changes, even if <strong>the</strong>y are unexpected<br />
like Margaret, a 75-year-<strong>old</strong> woman, who<br />
<strong>is</strong> now ra<strong>is</strong>ing two granddaughters, ages 6 and 8, in<br />
her Germantown ho<strong>me</strong> after <strong>the</strong> sudden death of<br />

Mary, 71-year-<strong>old</strong> Manayunk resident<br />
her daughter: “My SOWN group <strong>is</strong> like my extended<br />
family. Support occurs each ti<strong>me</strong> we <strong>me</strong>et,”<br />
says Margaret.<br />

Journey’s Way Geriatric Counseling Program, a nationally<br />
recognized model, offers assess<strong>me</strong>nt and treat<strong>me</strong>nt<br />
for people experiencing late life depression and o<strong>the</strong>r behavioral<br />
health conditions. Experienced clinicians offer<br />
ass<strong>is</strong>tance in many community sites and in <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>me</strong><br />
when necessary.<br />
Mrs. Smith <strong>is</strong> a 75 year <strong>old</strong> widow living alone in her<br />
house. She was referred to <strong>the</strong> Geriatric Counseling Program<br />
by a concerned family <strong>me</strong>mber because she had<br />
stopped going to church and family get- toge<strong>the</strong>rs and<br />
see<strong>me</strong>d increasingly <strong>is</strong>olated. Mrs. Smith was evaluated<br />
by a Geriatric Counseling Program <strong>the</strong>rap<strong>is</strong>t and found<br />
to be suffering from clinical depression. She agreed to <strong>the</strong><br />
recom<strong>me</strong>nded treat<strong>me</strong>nts of <strong>me</strong>dication and <strong>the</strong>rapy and<br />
over a few months began to improve. With <strong>the</strong> support<br />
of her <strong>the</strong>rap<strong>is</strong>t, she was referred to Touching Lives 55+<br />
our peer counseling program, to support her recovery.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> group helped her to gain confidence, streng<strong>the</strong>n her<br />
resolve to stay active, make friends, and integrate into<br />
<strong>the</strong> larger center activities. When her counseling ended,<br />
Mrs. Smith was no longer depressed and had resu<strong>me</strong>d all<br />
of her for<strong>me</strong>r activities. She was also attending <strong>the</strong> center<br />
three days a week and enjoying art and exerc<strong>is</strong>e classes.<br />
Journey’s Way touches <strong>the</strong> lives of over 3100 <strong>old</strong>er people<br />
and <strong>the</strong>ir families and <strong>the</strong> number <strong>is</strong> growing each year.<br />
Within a rich service and program environ<strong>me</strong>nt we deal<br />
<strong>with</strong> <strong>is</strong>sues of age related problems such as inco<strong>me</strong>, access<br />
to benefits and information, e<strong>me</strong>rgency help, and<br />
counseling for difficulties ranging from ho<strong>me</strong> preservation<br />
to behavioral health <strong>is</strong>sues. Our Center supports<br />
health and wellness, offers a place of friendship, and new<br />
opportunities for creativity, learning, and personal<br />
growth. Our social workers and Adult Day Services Program<br />
help elders and <strong>the</strong>ir families negotiate <strong>the</strong> difficult<br />
long term care system to find <strong>the</strong> right place for care and<br />
support. Our Adult Day Service participants enjoy a<br />
wonderful day while <strong>the</strong>y and <strong>the</strong>ir families benefit from<br />
<strong>the</strong> health and social services provided. Our Geriatric<br />
Counseling Program a<strong>me</strong>liorates suffering and restores<br />
lives. Th<strong>is</strong> array of services and programs enables us to<br />
respond to <strong>the</strong> concerns, worries, stories, and dreams of<br />
each individual. We strive to provide those services and<br />
programs <strong>with</strong> spirit and heart.<br />
