THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 15, 2009
TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE
“Be Made Clean”
“If you That was the leper’s request to Jesus.
wish, you The poor man suffered from the terrible
disease of leprosy. In Jesus’ time,
can make
there was no cure for this disease and
me clean.” it was contagious. So the sufferer had
to leave his family and community
and go off to a remote place, usually out in the desert,
to live with other lepers. It was a bleak and depressing
existence. This leper heard that Jesus was
nearby so he appealed to Him to heal him. Jesus
responded, “I do will it. Be made clean.” What a
sense of relief the leper must have felt. He was so
elated that he told everyone about his cure despite
the fact that Jesus had told him not to. Thank God
leprosy is not as prevalent today as it was in Jesus’
time, although it does still afflict some people in
parts of the world.
As we hear the story of the healing in today’s Gospel,
we might reflect on clean and unclean in our
world. Sometimes we refer to someone as wearing a
white hat, signifying that he is honest and upright
while the reference to someone wearing a black hat
implies less than ethical.
We are clean or unclean? We are honest, truthful,
respectful, reverent, compassionate or are we dishonest,
lying, prejudiced, callous, godless? We are
probably neither, but a bit of both. The good and the
bad is part of every human life. There are times
when we are lepers in need of cleansing. Do we have
the heart to cry out to Jesus to make us clean during
this Lent? That is what Lent is really about. It is a
time of grace when Jesus calls to us to be clean. He
calls us to leave the desert of the sinner and walk in
His path by His light. He is asking us to be cleansed
of ill-will, pettiness, jealousy, selfishness. Alone we
cannot do it, but the One who cleansed the leper can
make us clean. We must be attentive to His word
and respond with faith as the leper did. Jesus said,
“Woe to you Scribes, Pharisees and hypocrites, you
clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but
within you are full of all uncleanness.” Are our
Lenten activities just polishing the outside while
nothing is changed in the heart? Lord, make me
clean. Amen.
OUR SAVIOUR SCHOOL
NEWS...
The annual Our Saviour’s School induction
ceremony of the National Junior Honor Society
was held on March 4th. The National Junior Honor Society
in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership,
citizenship and service. The following 6th grade
students were inducted into membership: Carmen
Araujo, Alexa Blaser, Hannah Bernard, Carly Grimison,
Zachary Kingsley, Jennifer Ryan and Jarrod Trettis.
Congratulations to these new members and a BIG thank
you to the current NJHS members, who made the induction
ceremony a special occasion for these new members
and their families. Current NJHS Officers include: Caroline
Ciell, President; Melanie DiLoreto, Vice President;
Alyssa Allen, Secretary/Treasurer. The remaining current
Taylor Lindquist, Loren Silva and Marissa Zucchelli.
Keep up the great job!
For the past 12 weeks OSS 3-6 graders have been
preparing for our Annual Science Fair Competition.
This is a huge project and a major undertaking for both
students and parents. All parts of the project are based
on steps of the scientific method and the teachers use this
time to practice and prepare the students, asking questions,
discussing variables, controls and strategies to help
predict outcomes and produce accurate results. Students
learn how to measure using the International System of
Units (metric system) and apply those sometimes foreign
terms to their project goals and outcomes. This was the
first year the 3 rd graders have participated in this great
learning experience. We have scientists and engineers
volunteer to be judges and they cannot help commenting
on the students’ outstanding workmanship, eye for detail
and precision, and their communication skills for their
project presentations. We would like to congratulate all
the participants on their efforts this year and recognize
the winners from each grade and scientific category. The
first place winners from each grade and category get to
represent Our Saviour’s School and compete in a countywide
Catholic Schools Science Fair at the end of March at
St Theresa’s.

OSS Now Registering For The
2009-2010 School Year
Our Saviour School, a U.S. Department of Education
Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, is currently registering
children for the 2009-2010 school year. We are offering
PreK 3, Free VPK-4, full-time PK4 and K - 8th
grades. We offer an outstanding academic education,
our students take the Iowa Standardized Test, a nationally
normed reference test. We score higher than 85% of
students taking the test in the entire country. All teachers
are Florida State certified in their fields, several
teachers have Masters degrees. We offer many extracurricular
activities and competitive sports. We also offer
Spanish for PreK - 8th Grade and Algebra 1 in 8th
grade. Tutoring is available free every day, and children
can participate in Robotics, Chess and Drama Club. Tuition
assistance is available, and free tuition for qualifying
families. Please call Diane at 783-2330 for a tour or to
learn more about our school.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
“I stand with Peter. Through
prayer and counsel, show me,
Lord, where it is in your
vineyard that you want me
to serve. Then give me
strength to be faithful.”
That quote is from the “Prayer to Know One’s Vocation.”
If you are like me, you often pray for the
future of your children. We want our children to
know the dignity and gratification of meaningful
work. And we especially want them to know the love
and stability that a strong marriage and family life
offer. “Thy will be done” is the most faithful
prayer a parent can offer up on behalf of a child.
Even though I pray in this way for my children, I
don’t think that I have ever suggested to them that
they should pray in this way for themselves. In fact,
I don’t think I’ve ever discussed the concept of discernment
with them.
Thanks to the Knights of Columbus, Our Saviour’s
has a ministry for families that encourages parents
and children to have family devotions dedicated to
vocational discernment.
The Knights have donated a “Vocations Chalice” to
Our Saviour’s. Each week a family takes it home and
prays for religious vocations in general and for the
individual callings of the family members.
When the time comes that one of our parishioners
is called to the priesthood, the chalice will be given
to him to use throughout his ministry. And he will
take it with him knowing that it contains the loving,
hopeful prayers of so many, and that it is linked to
the various vocations of all the family members who
hosted the chalice for a week. How beautiful is
that?!
To sign up to host this beautiful chalice for one
week, call Kim Heibel at 799-2839. The chalice
comes with prayer cards and a DVD.
Everyone has a calling.
