Decorating your yard with a wood Santa 

Looking for ways to decorate your 

ard for the holidays? If electric lights 

ren't enough, consider adding a snowan, 

a reindeer or even old St. Nick himelf 

constructed from wood. 

This can be a simple, inexpensive and 

njoyable project. 

You'll need to have a few basic tools.

ince you'll be working with wood, and

ebris, you should wear safety goggles. 

lso, it's a good idea to wear tight-fitting 

lothing. Loose clothes can get caught in 

aws and other power tools, and result in 

njury. 

Tools needed: a scroll saw or jigsaw 

ith finish blades. The sharper the 

lade, the finer the cut. Keep a hammer, 

uler and sandpaper or a sanding block 

andy. A drill with an assortment of bits 

nd a set of screwdrivers are needed. A 

outer offers a nice touch, but is not a 

ecessity and basically is for advanced 

oodworking projects. 

The materials needed vary depending 

pon the object being created. Small 

bjects can be constructed from a soft 

aterial which usually comes from the 

pine family. Pine wins out over all other 

soft woods because it is plentiful, easy to 

work with and generally more affordable. 

A 6-foot piece of 1-by-12 pine goes a 

long way. 

Three-quarter-inch plywood is best 

suited for larger projects like a sled, 

candy canes, reindeer, candles, choir 

singers or a Santa. Whereas many of 

these objects can be created from particleboard, 

masonite or thinner material, 

we suggest that you use an exteriorgrade 

plywood with a smooth finish on 

one side. Other materials tend to warp 

and deteriorate due to exposure to dampness. 

The first step is creating a pattern. 

You can make your own, using sheets of 

butcher paper, or you can purchase patterns 

from a local crafts store or mail 

order company. Sometimes you can find 

something in a children's coloring book 

that may appeal to you and enlarge it in 

sections at the local copy shop. Most 

commercially available patterns come in 

several sections, in any case. 

Once you have a pattern, transfer the 

design to the good side of the plywood. 

One of the easiest ways is with carbon 

hysician’s Care 

paper. First, place the plywood on a flat, 

stable surface. Saw horses are ideal. 

Next, place a section of the pattern over 

a sheet of carbon paper (you may need to 

tape several sheets together) and lay 

them over the smooth side of the plywood 

with the carbon paper facing down. 

Use a pencil or ballpoint pen to trace 

over the lines on the pattern. 

This will transfer the design onto the 

face of the plywood. Repeat the process 

for each section of the pattern. After the 

entire design has been transferred to the 

plywood, trace over the carbon lines 

with a medium point black felt tip pen, 

and you're ready to start cutting. 

Don't let the complexity of a pattern 

discourage you. Most of the cuts need 

only a steady hand and a little patience. 

Simply break complicated cuts into simpler 

curves and lines. Don't be afraid to 

move your saw to a different position on 

the wood and approach the line from a 

different angle. You may find drilling a 

pilot hole useful at those hard-to-get-to 

areas. 

When the object is cut out, seal all surfaces 

with a coat of white exterior grade 

acrylic latex primer. Don't forget to seal 

the edge as well. This is especially 

important since it's the area most vulnerable 

to damage from water. The 

primer seals the wood, yet allows the 

black pattern lines to bleed through so 

that you will be able to apply the various 

finish colors according to the design. 

One of the most important steps in finishing 

is sanding. The piece should be 

sanded with a rough grade of sandpaper 

(100-200 grit) before the primer is 

applied. This will knock off all large 

bumps and splinters. Sand again with 

finer paper or emery cloth (up to 500 

grit) after the primer has dried. 

Use an exterior grade acrylic latex 

gloss enamel for the finish. It holds up 

well in the elements, and best of all, 

cleans up with soap and water. A brush 

made from nylon or other synthetic 

materials works best with acrylic latex 

paints. Having an assortment of different 

size brushes will make for a more 

professional finished product. 

Using drywall screws, attach your 

creation to wood stakes that can be 

inserted into the soil for anchoring. 

An exterior-rated landscape floodlight 

will light up your holiday scene.

Holiday storage 

Every year we struggle to find where we 

ut last year's holiday decorations—ornaents, 

garlands, candles, wreaths and table 

ecorations. 

Finding them always is a challenge. 

Did we put the lights in the attic or under 

he floor? Were the wreaths in with the garand 

or was the garland in the boxes with 

he lights? We tried labeling the boxes once. 

hat was a mistake—three years later nothng 

was as marked. 

Recently, we were flying home from a 

ardware convention in Chicago. As pasengers, 

we were a captive audience. There 

n the seat pouch was an airline sales cataogue. 

Soon we got to the holiday section 

nd to pages that dealt with holiday decoation 

storage. What a find! There was an 

rnament box, a wreath box, a wreath bag 

nd even a bag large enough to hold an arificial 

tree. That's when our wheels startd 

turning. How did these differ from our 

ld storage containers? And how could they 

elp? Well, the answers were right there, 

nd the thought of storing this year's decrations 

became exciting. 

A few years ago, our items for the holiays 

were not stored in an organized fashion. 

Every box was a different size and 

large items like garlands and wreaths went 

into big black trash bags. The bags were 

ideal for keeping the dust off the decorations, 

but they were flimsy and didn't hold 

up over several seasons. Every bag and box 

had to be opened and the contents laid out 

and sorted before any decorating could 

begin. What wasn't used had to be put away 

again. 

We then came up with an idea we thought 

to be the solution—hard plastic flip-top containers, 

all the same size and color. We labeled 

their contents and stacked them neatly 

where we could find room. The next year 

or two wasn't too bad, but as time went by, 

the labels on the boxes and the contents of 

the boxes no longer matched. 

In the airline catalog, we discovered a 

group of storage products that were decoration 

specific. Wreath boxes for wreaths— 

no more black plastic bags; ornament boxes 

with two levels of divided storage; a gigantic 

bag for our small artificial tree and 

garland; and a large flat bag for our very 

large wreath. 

We continue to use our flip-top plastic 

boxes for many items, but adding a few 

new separate pieces helps make things easier 

to store and find. Now our garland goes 

in large zipper storage bags that are duffel-like. 

Our ornaments go into red and 

white ornament boxes that have separators—two 

deep. Hexagonal boxes are superb 

for protecting our wreaths. One of the 

problems we used to have with wreaths 

was that they would often get damaged in 

plastic bags, and, if we used a box big 

enough to hold the wreath, it took up too 

much room. The hex-shaped wreath box is 

sturdy and storage-friendly. We folded back 

part of the horizontal center separator in 

the ornament box so that we had a place for 

dolls and statues. It works well. The figurines 

are protected head to toe, and we 

don't have to use nearly as much tissue to 

protect them. Here's what we ended up 

with: 

We made H-shaped spools out of quarter-inch 

plywood (hard board also works) 

for our strings of lights, making sure to 

mark which string goes where—on the 

string and the holder. They prevent the 

lights from becoming tangled and can be 

custom made to fit both the lights and your 

favorite container. 

Odd-sized items are stored in flip-top 

hard plastic boxes (we like the clear kind), 

but labeling will work if you are careful 

when putting things away. 

All our small statues, dolls and ornaments 

go into special ornament storage 

boxes. The sleeves protect everything. 

Our large garland and trees go into special 

zipper bags that won't wear out every 

year and are fitted with grips for easy handling. 

Our wreaths now are securely protected 

in rigid boxes that are big enough for 

them, but not so big that they waste precious 

storage space. This is a real step up 

from garbage bags. 

Our big wreath goes in a special large, 

square flat bag that has carrying handles 

which double as hanging straps. 

So, we've found a few additional ways to 

make storing our decorations easier and 

less time consuming. Now things won't be 

difficult to find.

The Rec Plex will officially open on 

January 4, 2010. This is the facility 

that was previously known as the 

Fairfield Athletic Club. The tennis and 

racquetball areas have been modestly 

renovated for the purpose of providing 

additional recreational opportunities 

for the community. In an effort to expand 

a growing program, Y Gymnastics 

will occupy one court. By moving 

gymnastics away from the Sixth Ave. 

YMCA, we open up the Martens Gym 

for programming and open play for 

children and families. The other courts 

at the Rec Plex will be used primarily 

for indoor tennis and youth indoor 

soccer. The youth center area will be 

utilizing the racquetball court areas 

to engage in interactive video games 

and just “fun” activities. For more 

information about the Rec Plex, please

As YMCA operating expenses continue to increase, it is to be expected that a modest adjustment in price will be passed along 

to members and program participants. 

PROGRAM REFUND/CREDIT POLICY 

Due to the demand for program classes at the Family Y, it is necessary for us to enforce the following refund policy: 

1. All refunds will be made in the form of a credit due bill. The only exception is when the Family Y cancels a class. 

2. A request for a credit will not be granted after the first week of classes! 

3. Program refunds may be considered for any of the following reasons prior to a class meeting the second week: a. illness 

(with a physician’s statement) b. Moving outside a 50-mile radius. 

4. A pro-rated credit will be issued for medical reasons after the first full week of class (with a physician’s statement). 

5. We must stress: changes in personal circumstances do not warrant a credit. 

6. A handling fee of $5.00 will be deducted for any approved credit. The only exception is when the Family Y cancels a class. 

7. A request must be made by completing a Request for Credit form, which can be obtained at our front desk. 

8. Refunds and Credits are non-transferable.

We observe the following holidays and the building is closed New Years Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, July 

4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. No credits or refunds will be issued, or makeup classes scheduled for classes 

missed due to a holiday. 

SITTER CENTER 

Our Sitter Center is a fun, safe place for children. This center is staffed with responsible and caring adults. We provide an 

interactive and encouraging atmosphere for children while you are “building spirit, mind & body.” This service is provided for 

parents while using the facility only. SITTER CENTER CLOSED CHRISTMAS EVE AND NEW YEAR’S EVE.

LIGHTNING POLICY FOR THE SWIMMING POOLS 

Our policy follows the recommendations of the National Lightning Institute, as well as YMCA Services Corporation. Pools will 

be evacuated immediately when lightning is present or threatening. The pools will remain evacuated for at least 30 minutes 

after the last evidence of lightning. 

CLASS CANCELLATION PROCEDURE 

Class may be cancelled by the Family Y due to situations beyond our control. In the case of cancellation, every attempt will be 

made to make up the class.

JOINING FEES 

There will be a one-time joining fee charged to new members and also to previous members who have allowed their 

membership to lapse for a period of 30 days or more. 

BANK DRAFT PAYMENT PLAN 

Memberships on the Bank Draft Payment Plan are perpetual and continue until a written 30 day advance notice is signed 

at our Welcome Center and membership cards are returned. 

ANNUAL PAYMENT PLAN 

Memberships on the Annual Payment Plan are paid in full at the time that the membership is activated. Payment may be 

in the form of cash, check, Visa, or MasterCard. Prior to the anniversary date for annual renewals, a billing is mailed that

NEW MEMBERS 

Membership cards are mailed to new members within 7-10 days after the application has been made to join the facility.

Special short-term memberships will be available for full-time college students (12+ hours) during the summer months, 

Christmas, Easter, and Spring breaks.

PEE WEE SOCCER 

Our Pee Wee Soccer program is designed to provide boys and girls ages 3-6 with a 

positive introduction to the sport. The goal of each class is to instill character-building 

values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility into each participant. 

Players in the Pee Wee program will learn the basics in dribbling, passing and shooting 

during a non-competitive class session. All classes will be held on Saturday.

TERMINATION OF MEMBERSHIP 

The Family Y reserves the right to terminate a membership at “No Refund” for any member who fails to comply with 

established rules, policies, postings, and behavior not considered reasonable. 

MEDICAL FREEZE 

The Family Y understands that due to extended illness or physical disabilities, some special arrangements may be necessary. 

These persons must contact the Membership Department. This freeze will begin with written notification from the 

member, turning in his/her membership card(s), and a medical verification. Medical freezes will not be retroactive. The 

Family Y will establish a time limit to the freeze. Please note: The Family Y cannot freeze one member of a “Family” 

membership. 

EXTENDED LEAVE 

Please see the Membership Department if you are temporarily traveling out of state for an extensive time period. An 

extension of membership may be provided with proper documentation. 

GUEST POLICY 

Members are permitted to bring guests to the Y. Payment of a guest fee is required per guest upon check in at the Welcome

The Silver Sneakers program is appropriate for older adults who are active as well as those

The Silver Sneaker MSROM (Muscular Strength & Range of Motion) class allows you to have 

fun with music through a variety of exercises designed to develop muscular strength, range of 

movement and activity for daily living. Hand weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball 

are offered for resistance. A chair is used for seated or standing support.

WEIGHT RACE 

This program is open to everyone; however, this year we will max the program out at 70 

participants. We are promoting good health and lifestyle changes and do not recommend fad 

diets or supplements. 

Every year, we try to listen to your constructive comments and make the program better for 

the next year. Here is what you are telling us you would like to see. 

“More personal attention to keep us on track”. 

Participants will be broken down into groups of 4. Each group will be assigned a trainer. 

Groups will meet with their trainer once a week to weigh in and get a great workout. This 

is a great time to talk with your trainer about “whatever” is happening with your weight loss. 

Training times will be based on your trainer’s availability and although every attempt will be 

made to accommodate everyone in your group, this may not be possible. If you currently are 

working with a trainer, this is fine, continue to do so; however, you may not end up with your 

trainer for this event. Please do not ask to be placed with your current trainer. Groups will be 

determined by random selection.. 

We will have one female and one male over all weight loss winners. We will also have a Team/ 

Trainer prize for the team that loses the most weight. Winners will be determined by the 

greatest percentage of weight loss – not total pounds. 

Everyone interested in joining the weight loss challenge MUST be registered by 5:00 PM 

on Thursday, January 7th. This allows the trainers ample time to prepare for all those 

attending. NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED DAY OF. In fairness to everyone, 

please do not call and ask for special arrangements. 

All participants should arrive by 8:00 AM and report to the Fulton Gym. At this time, we will 

go over all the guidelines for the program. Following guest speaker, Barry Cohen, owner and 

president of Midwest Benefits and Wellness, we will open the event with some information 

and facts surrounding the weight loss race we all face.

CONTACT KICK (STILL KICKIN’ STRONG) 

This class will be both a cardiovascular and muscle conditioning class. Here’s how it will work. 

We will have two participants on each side of a standing punching bag. Your instructor will 

demonstrate moves, both kicks and punches on his/her bag. We will also incorporate shadow 

boxing, skipping rope, lower body conditioning, core work and flexibility. Everyone taking the 

class MUST have boxing gloves or wraps to participate. Anyone in attendance without the

INDOOR CYCLING 

Located in the Wellness Center, enjoy the ride where the weather never matters. Traditional 

cycle classes are all 45 minutes in length and follow the same format as far as hills, sprints 

or flat surface. There are 9 slots available in each class. When you register for a class, such 

as M/W/F at 6:00 AM, this reserves your bike for the entire session. There is no “guessing” 

as to whether there will be a bike available. In an attempt to be flexible with riders, we have 

incorporated the “floater” system. 

If you register for a class, such as, M/W/F 6:00 AM and find that Friday is a problem, you may 

“float” into another class, but only if there is an open bike. This is not a guarantee. We must 

stress that there is NO PAY AS YOU GO or DROP IN ACCESS in this program. You must be 

registered to either ride or float into a class. Members are always given first opportunity for 

bikes; however, remember non-members may reserve bikes during non-member registration.

GRAVITY 

Have you tried Gravity??? We all need a little help with “gravity”. Gravity encourages functional 

exercise using an individual’s body weight as resistance. The gravity system uses a 

cable and pulley system, a free motion glideboard and is adjustable to nine different levels of 

resistance. It engages all major muscle groups. 

For those of you ready for a little more gravity, we implemented Gravity Plus. With Gravity 

Plus, you will receive six additional exercises. These classes will run 45 minutes in length. 

Price has been adjusted accordingly. 

All classes max at 4 and classes with less than 2 will not run.

LAP SWIM 

In order to enjoy your swim time please note the following: 

1. Lap swim in the morning includes snorklers, individuals with kick-boards and unaided

A supervised, yet non-instructed, fun, and safe atmosphere. Also, provides extra practice 

time to work on gymnastic skills for class participants and gym team members. Everyone is 

welcome, yet a parent must accompany those under the age of 6 at all times. Payment 

for non-members is made at the Welcome Center Desk prior to each open gym. Please present 

Y membership card to the receptionist upon entering the building, and please give the Y 

gymnastic instructor your receipt if non-member. Participants must wear sweatpants, shorts, 

or a leotard. Jeans are not permitted. No rough playing or hanging out is allowed.

TRAINING TEAM 

This Y member-only training team provides a good learning experience for those talented 

and interested gymnasts wishing to join the competitive program. This class is one step 

before the competitive team that will focus on the necessary skills for advancement into the 

team program. The gymnast must show great potential and desire to be on team. Recommendation 

and evaluation by the team coach is needed to be admitted into this class. All 

training team members must have a Family Y membership. Days and times may vary.

This Y member-only competitive gymnastic program is for girls (boys who wish to join the

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING COMES TO THE Y 

The Family Y will be having a Christmas store open in December. This store will be located off 

the Rotunda and be stocked with inexpensive items that children can purchase for mom, dad 

and family. Our staff will assist the children with their shopping and then wrap the item, so the 

child can take it home to place under the tree. It’s never too early to teach children the art of 

giving. Watch for store hours to be posted soon.

CREATIVE PLAY PRESCHOOL 

Creative Play is a preschool operating from September through May. Our preschool provides social 

and academic skills for children ages 3, 4 & 5. Creative Play Preschool has a wide variety of activities 

such as story time, music, language development, activity time, creative movement, outdoor play, 

art, and social interaction. These activities help to prepare your child both socially and academically 

for Kindergarten. All children attend a physical education class held once a week, and Pre-Kindergarten 

also includes a weekly swim lesson.

This is a new program designed to help our Creative Play Preschool parents continue to work while 

we provide a safe, fun, learning environment for their child. To take advantage of this Day Care program, 

children must be enrolled in the Mon/Wed/Fri class or the Pre-Kindergarten class. Extended 

care hours are from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM. During the course of the day, children will be taken to their 

preschool class and then returned to the extended care room. Both sets of teachers, Creative Play 

and Extended Care, will teach from similar curriculums in order to promote consistency within the

SUMMER DAY CAMP 2010 

Camp Discovery at the Family Y is a day camp for children going into Kindergarten through children 

going into the 7th grade that runs Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM (A limited number of 

extended care hours are available). Opening day is June 14th with camp ending on August 13th. 

Camp Discovery offers fun, age appropriate activities. 

The camp counselors strive to incorporate the YMCA core values of Honesty, Caring, Respect 

and Responsibility into every activity. Campers are grouped by age and a minimum ratio of one 

counselor for every ten campers is maintained. Morning activities take place at Maher Park which 

offers tennis and basketball courts, ball fields, a fishing pond, hiking trails, a shelter house and a 

playground. Lunch is provided for our campers and any child under the age of 18 in the community, 

through the Summer Food Service Program. In the afternoon, all of the campers swim. In addition 

to the in-camp activities, there is a weekly field trip. Camp Discovery accepts Title XX funds from the 

Department of Job and Family Services, and offers limited scholarships through the Y and United

Council for the Retarded, Inc. developed the facility and operated the camp through the summer 

of 1998.

Camp Shining Sun/Rainbow is sponsored by the United Way of Fairfield County and is offered 

free of charge to Fairfield County residents with an IEP/ISP.

WELLNESS CENTER 

The Wellness Center, initially opened in Sept. 2001 in partnership with Fairfield Medical Center, 

is a facility with the equipment and the staff to address the physical health needs of individuals. 

The YMCA supervises member usage in the Wellness Center by showing them how to use 

equipment and maintaining cleanliness. Equipment orientations are offered free of charge to 

members by appointment with YMCA staff. These appointments are made by a staff person 

who will call you by phone. To start the process, fill out a request form and return it to Welcome 

Center staff. These forms are attached to the membership application packet. Additional forms 

are available at the desk in the Wellness Center. Personal trainers are available to customize 

individual workouts. 

Equipment includes 45 cardiovascular machines, 25 selectorized strength machines, 24 pieces 

for free weight strengthening, 2 Ab Solos and two stretching machines. Dumbbells up to 125 

pounds and several accessory pieces (straps, belts, bars, bands, balls, etc.) compliment the 

training routine. The perimeter of the Wellness Center is surrounded by a track (13 laps to one 

mile) for walking or running and stretching areas. 

In an effort to be user friendly, this facility is accessible any time the YMCA is open for business. 

There is no sign-in sheet and no equipment reservations – just start right in! Feel free to ask any 

YMCA staff if you need assistance. Simple rules are posted for your information and safety in 

the Wellness Center.

PRE TEEN WEIGHT LIFTING AND EXERCISE CLASS 

One parent is required to participate as an observer during each class. This class meets for 

three Saturdays – 1 ½ hours each. Attendance is mandatory without exception. Taught in the 

Wellness Center, this class presents the fundamentals of exercise with an emphasis on weight 

training. Each class has educational components and “hands-on” experience with weights. Educational 

topics include safety, etiquette, basic terms, benefits of exercise, principles of training, 

writing an exercise routine, Wellness Center guidelines and principles of nutrition. Participants 

receive an instructional booklet. Upon meeting class requirements, participants are given a card 

for access to the Wellness Center. A parent must sign an acknowledgement form.

TRIATHLON 

This will be our third year for the Triathlon. Year one had 17 participants, year two – 30. Whether 

as a first timer or keeping in “triathlon” shape during the winter, this will be enjoyable for you. The 

distances are shorter than traditional triathlons. The date is Saturday, February 20 with all activities 

indoors. The Wendel Pool will host the swimming portion which starts the race. The second 

leg is cycling on Star Trac V-bikes. The final leg is completed on treadmills in the Wellness Center.
