ARTIST PROFILE Lectrr’s Europa Puzzle When the Belgian illustrator Lectrr was asked to create his vision on European culture he came up with a huge image in the style of “Where is Waldo”, but without the Waldo character. The image was first used in art exhibitions and on educational posters, but it was until a puzzle producer saw it that it was turned into the successful jigsaw it is today. But who is this Lectrr person anyway? Lectrr, born in 1979, was always fascinated about comic books. He published his first series of comics in five local newspapers when he was only eleven years old and continued his quest for global recognition from that point on. Nowadays, his cartoon series ‘Hara Kiwi’ is published in six different languages in Europe and at his height, his daily newspaper comic ‘Lars’ was syndicated in three Belgian newspapers. Which is a lot, considering the fact that it was the only published newspaper comic that wasn’t bought from the American syndicates? Besides cartooning, Lectrr is involved in radio making, stand-up comedy and animation. His mother being an avid jigsaw puzzle aficionado, it was always Lectrr’s dream to come up with a puzzle one day. Despite the effort of sending illustrations to jigsaw manufacturers, none of them returned his calls. Until his Europa-illustration, which was already a small success in the poster business, caught the attention of the people at Puzzleman. The company, run by Eric Dilles, had a strong affinity with comic books and their authors, as they mainly produced comic book related puzzles at the time. Eric immediately offered Lectrr to create a 1000 pieces puzzle based on the illustration. About the puzzle It was Lectrr’s main concern to have his signature visual jokes, combined with educational information on art, history and legends, mixed with national heritage, famous artists, some cultural clichés and cartoony references without creating a dull children’s book illustration. The outcome is not only an image that works as a puzzle, but that also keeps you puzzled about all the stuff that’s going on in the image. Most of the time spent on this puzzle won’t be on the act of putting the jigsaw back together, but on the hours spent finding out who’s who and discussing what’s referring to what. It’s an amazing challenge for your cultural baggage and your knowledge about the rest of Europe. Add Lectrr’s typical silly jokes in the mix, and it’s almost guaranteed you’ll be back for more. What do you think of that? Still at least I get to answer all the letters this month. Just a quick note to let you know how pleased I am with the 3000pc Jigmat. It is great for completing my larger jigsaws and something I’ve been looking for a long time. Jig says: They are a great idea. Just cover with the top mat, put a tablecloth on top and nobody will know that they have a ‘puzzling’ companion for dinner! Jim and Louise Mason couldn’t wait to start the 24000pc jigsaw they purchased. Having made arrangements with Margaret, they jumped in their car, drove 80 miles and picked up the much desired puzzle on the 10th December. Having spent Christmas and New Year away, the project started in January and was completed by 24th Feb. Louise says that Jim completed it himself as she’s not a puzzle person! Jig wants to know if this is a record or has anyone else completed it in less time. And just for your info Ravensburger will be bringing out a 35,000pc jigsaw in the not too distant future! As per last year, our Club will be donating and supporting the Jigfests taking place in the UK this year. Lytham St Anne’s Jigfest takes place at United Reform Church on Tuesday 17th-Sat 21st August and Isle of Wight Jigfest will be held 9th August-14th August at St James Church East Cowes. For those who made the Abbots Langley Jigfest, you’ll be please to know that they raised £1680. Margaret or I will hopefully be attending all. Oh b… ..run out of room!
