According to a now <strong>an</strong>nual survey by the Small Times trade magazine, there are 467 comp<strong>an</strong>ies<br />
producing n<strong>an</strong>omaterials or the equipment to produce them, or making use <strong>of</strong> n<strong>an</strong>omaterials<br />
within products in the United States (2004). Of these industries, the majority are devoted to<br />
material development (44 percent), as shown in Figure 3 below. Capital equipment <strong>an</strong>d test <strong>an</strong>d<br />
measurement account for the next two largest n<strong>an</strong>otechnology industries (15 <strong>an</strong>d 9 percent,<br />
respectively).<br />
