Letter from the Head of Institute
Last week, I hosted my first Open Meeting as Head of Institute (HoI). I touched a
little about my background and experience as HoI since starting in September. I
discussed the management and administrative structure of the Institute, space
issues and the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Ms Ann Kelly, Head of
Faculty HR Operations, kindly discussed the College's staff survey.
Feedback was requested on NHLI's various areas (communications, research
events, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, etc) and details of NHLI's
calendar for the next 12 months was put forward.
A copy of the slides as well as a feedback form is available online:
http://www1.imperial.ac.uk/nhli/aboutus/open_meeting/. The open meeting and
online feedback is an opportunity for you to discuss current issues and for us to work
together towards influencing the path ahead. I strongly encourage all to provide
feedback and ideas – together, the Institute will thrive!
The meeting was followed by the Athena Open Meeting, launching the 12 months to
renewal of our Silver SWAN award. Professor Clare Lloyd and Dr Emma Watson
updated the Institute on NHLI’s progress on achieving its Action Plan and call for
ideas and volunteers for the year ahead.

It is absolutely crucial that we work together towards Athena’s aims of assisting the
recruitment, retention and progression of women in Science, Engineering and
Technology. By working towards such aims, we will ensure that NHLI is an
outstanding place to work as good practice and opportunities benefit everyone.
Details of the application, the open meeting and the feedback form can be accessed
online: http://www1.imperial.ac.uk/nhli/womeninscience/athenaswan/
I look forward to hearing your feedback and discussing the Institute’s future.
With best wishes,
Professor Kim Fox
Head, National Heart & Lung Institute
‘I love Pharmacology’ t-shirts
The Young Pharmacologists’ Committee of the British Pharmacological Society
(BPS) is proud to be part of the society’s initiative to raise money to support African

students to attend the 17th World Congress of Pharmacology in Cape Town, South
Africa during 2014. We trust this will create an incredibly valuable experience for
young enthusiastic pharmacologists with limited funds to travel to and attend an
international conference. As our contribution, we are selling “I love Pharmacology” t-
shirts for £5 each from the BPS booth during meetings. To buy a t-shirt for yourself
PALACES is the result of a
collaboration between artist
Gina Czarnecki and stem
cell biologist Professor Sara
Rankin. The project is a
participatory piece of art that
involves primary school
children across the UK.
Children will be asked to
donate a single milk tooth to
help build the palace. They
will be given a tooth token in
return that they can leave
under their pillow for the tooth
The project has multiple meanings and interpretations depending on the audience
and is designed primarily to promote dialogue and debate.
For children the project provides an opportunity to become (quite literally) part of a
sculpture that will be exhibited across the UK (currently in Liverpool at the bluecoat),
and next year in London at the Science Museum and the Centre of the Cell. The
project is about highlighting the potential of adult (as opposed to embryonic) stem
cells that can be harvested from many tissues currently regarded as clinical waste,
including umbilical cords, fat from liposuction and indeed baby teeth. It is also
importantly about altruistic donation of a body part that is relevant both for building
national stem cell banks and transplants.
Prof Rankin will be giving a public talk in Bluecoat art gallery - Weds 8 February
2012 and running 9 stem cell workshops for up to 200 pupils from Liverpool’s
schools Jan 17-19 th . There will be a Wellcome Trust funded public debate on Wed
8 th Feb 2012.
The sculpture was commissioned by the Bluecoat and funded by the Bluecoat,
Imperial College (Faculty of Medicine) and Professor Rankin’s Wellcome Trust
Senior Investigator Award.
Royal British Legion Centre for Blast Injury Studies
The Royal British Legion Centre for Blast Injury Studies at Imperial College London
is the first collaboration of its kind in the UK, where civilian engineers and scientists
will work alongside military doctors, supported by charitable funding, to reduce the
effects of roadside bombs or Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) - the leading
cause of death and injury for Service personnel on operations in Afghanistan and
Iraq. The goals of the new Centre are to increase understanding about blast injury
patterns, improve treatments and recovery and develop better ways of protecting
those serving in current and future conflicts - thus reducing the long-term impacts of
such injuries on individuals, their families and the community.
The Royal British Legion, the leading Armed Forces charity, which provides support
and advice and campaigns on behalf of the whole Armed Forces community, is
providing £5 million to establish the Centre. Imperial College London will lead on the
scientific research, which builds on the work already carried out by the Imperial Blast
research group at the College.
Professor Anthony Bull, from the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College
London, is the Director of the new Centre.
Professor Sara Rankin has been appointed as Theme Lead for Blast Biology and
Therapeutics in the new £8m Royal British Legion Centre for Blast Injury Studies at
Imperial College London. Professor Rankin will initially lead projects that investigate
the effects of blast on stem cells and lung tissue.
