Mixing near the Shelf Break (Bay of Biscay) Surface chlorophyll on 4.9.99 The internal tides and waves produce mixing of the upper ocean near the shelf break. This injects nutrients into the well-lit layers and allows plant cells (phytoplankton/ chlorophyll) to grow or “bloom” near the shelf break (200 m contour). So internal wave mixing is important for biological growth in the ocean.
