Thank you for your interest in our 2 nd Annual ASH ANGUS, LLC Bull Sale. We want to thank everyone who is a 

repeat client and we want to welcome everyone who is with us for the first time. We are excited about the Angus 

business and what the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB) brand continues to do to make your Angus sired calves more 

valuable year after year. In fact even though the economy has been hard on many consumers the CAB ® business 

continues to be on another record pace over last year’s record. This is why our Angus cattle are worth so much 

more than other cattle - it is all in the brand. 

“TEXAS BEST BRAND OF VALUE” is our motto and it what gives ASH ANGUS, LLC an advantage over our competitors 

because we expect our cattle and our genetics to add value to your calf crop. Our program is unique because 

we don’t pamper our cattle and they have to “work” in tough environments. We constantly fight the weather and 

many other obstacles that make this a challenging business. Our Angus cowherd is strong and produce designed 

genetics to be the factories that make a real difference for our clients, both commercial and registered. In fact, 

the best recommendation I have is when a client tells us their ASH Angus sired calves bring more money. This is 

where the rubber meets the road. Thanks to EPDs and our desire to make our cattle “look” good, we are on the 

right road. 

100 coming two-year-old bulls fertility, performance and genetically tested bulls represent the majority of our sale 

this year. The bulls are a big, stout set of individuals that will produce calving ease, maternal, carcass and, the 

ever important, growth. Let’s face it, we still sell pounds, but just as important to us is quality. While there are a 

number of bulls that are herd sire prospects for registered breeders, ALL of the bulls are ready for to go to work no 

matter the operation. These are our best and they truly will be the “Texas best brand of value”. 

We are also offering 16 really nice fall born bull calves that can be purchased and grown out to best fit your country. 

These are fancy young calves and will be ready for service next spring. These calves come from the heart of 

our fall calving herd and their heifer mates are double fancy.

About the Bulls 

Since these bulls were calves they have been managed with the thought of growing them to be able to express their maximum genetic potential, while keeping in 

mind their structure and reproductive performance. They were not creep fed but the bulls did learn to eat cake with their dams. They will come to your horn or 

siren or, if you’re like me, your own cattle call. Our bulls are developed on a high percentage of roughage with 12% protein and limited grain. These bulls can 

walk and cover the country - they are hard footed and sound. 

VACCINATIONS: 

• As calves on-side their dams Vision 7 with Intervet Spur, Pfizer Cattle Master 4 + VL5 

• At weaning, and then revaccinated 45 days later with Pfizer Cattle Master Gold, Intervet Vision 7 with Spur and Fort Dodge Cydectin Pour-On Wormer 

• March 2009 Pfizer SpiroVac VL5 booster and Pfizer Dectomax pour-on 

• June 2009 Fort Dodge Cydectin Pour-On Wormer and Bayer Fly Tag Coral Plus

• All bulls meet all state and federal health requirements and sell with health paper for immediate interstate shipment.

according to the terms and breeding conditions of this sale, and the terms and conditions recommended by the American Angus Association. 

• All bulls are brucellosis (Bangs) tested and are free of any bovine diseases, Texas is a Certified Brucellosis and TB Free state. 

FIRST YEAR BREEDING SEASON 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE: 

All bulls selling for $2000 or more will be covered 100%, less salvage value, by ASH Angus, LLC, if they are injured during the first breeding season and not able 

to return to service that first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bull. 100% of the value of the 

injured bull, minus the salvage value, will be given as credit at a future ASH Angus, LLC sale or toward a replacement from ASH Angus, if one is available. Any 

injured bull must be diagnosed by a veterinarian and all claims must be made by June 1, 2010. 

FREE DELIVERY: 

On any bull purchased, free delivery will be offered to any purchaser within Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas or Louisiana. Free delivery is also available 

to central points in the continental United States with the purchase of five or more bulls. Bulls will be delivered within a reasonable time after the sale.

Information presented in this book is accurate to the best of ASH Angus, LLC’s knowledge. Any additional data will be provided sale day on the supplement 

sheet. Please note:

• EPD values highlighted rank in the top 10% for all non-parent bulls. 

EPDs ARE SEVEN TIMES MORE RELIABLE THAN ACTUAL WEIGHTS 

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs): 

ALL YOU NEED ARE EPDs. We are striving to give you the rancher and producer the information you need to make informed decisions so that you can advance 

your beef cow program. The American Angus Association (AAA) has purposely created EPD’s to give you good information about the cattle being sold in this 

sale. Many sales give all kinds of other information but in our minds it is so easy to get confused trying to decide what one should emphasize or not. We believe 

the information we have sent to the AAA through the Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR), including: birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, scrotal 

circumference and ultrasound data, which is used to generate EPDs, is all you need to make good decisions. Please contact us if you have questions. 

According to AAA, Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of 

other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their 

performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, 

and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data 

edits needed for NCE. 

For more information regarding EPDs, log on to AAA website at www.angus.org. Definitions for each EPD used in this book are as follows: 

PRODUCTION 

• Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted 

births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. 

It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire’s calves will be born 

when he is bred to first-calf heifers. 

• Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to 

transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. 

• Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability 

to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. 

• Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to 

transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. 

MATERNAL 

• Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and 

mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other 

sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and 

mothering ability. 

CARCASS 

• Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in 

hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. 

• Marbling EPD (MRB), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling 

score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist 

beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate 

of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared 

to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if 

calves were exposed to the same environment. 

• Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the 

expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. 

$W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in 

birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. 

• Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected 

average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared

SALE DEDICATION TO RICHMOND HALES 

RICHMOND HALES of Canyon, Texas has been my Angus mentor for almost my whole life. This year I am proud to dedicate 

our sale in honor of Richmond and Mary Jo Hales. The Hales purchased their first registered Angus from my grandfather, 

Tarlton Willingham, Hamlin, TX in 1962. Because of the relationship between my family and the Hales that started 

when I was three years old I have had the strong privilege of learning about Angus from a real master breeder. Richmond 

now 85 years old is still breeding and marketing fine Angus with his son Rick and family. They are some of our best friends 

and we always learn from them. My son Tarlton thinks Richmond & Mary Jo is another set of his grandparents. 

The Hales herd has had a huge impact on our breeding program; over half of our 

herd was either purchased from the Hales or produced from their genetics mainly 

through their sires we own with them. I can freely admit that due to the superior 

genetics in some cases 8 generations of the Hales breeding, our herd is light years 

ahead of where we would have been without their strong influence. Performance 

cattle are their motto and we are continuing on with performance of their herd 

mixed with our own style of breeding Angus.

Thank you Richmond for being my Angus mentor and helping me with so many 

points that we have learned well with your guiding hand as our teacher. Also cows 

are no different than people, behind every good man there is a good woman and
