With less fuel, less road spray and less breakage
Traditional mud flaps @ 65mph
Brockway Smith gears up to equip their entire fleet with Eco-flaps ®
after 90-day trials demonstrate 0.2 MPG fuel economy improvement
on tandem rigs and 0.5 MPG improvement on 53’ trailers.
Metropolitan Transportation reports almost doubling the return on
their investment in Eco-flaps ® the first full month they ran their fleet
with the new flaps.
AND...
All current fleet customers are returning to order additional Eco-flaps ®
for their new equipment. Nothing like a satisfied customer!
Eco-flaps ® @ 65mph - No drag!
Eco-Flaps ® Redirecting Spray Onto The Road Surface
Eco-flaps ® are not traditional mudflaps with
stamped holes.
They are professionally engineered with each
vertical bar of the Eco-flap ® molded with a
patented, curved, wing-type design that makes
contact with the water and channels it to the
small dead air space on the back side of the
flap which form drops that gravitate to the
ground (as demonstrated with the Eco-flap ® in
the photo above).
Eco-flaps ® are aerodynamic and like any
aerodynamic product, their optimum benefit
is derived from the more wind that comes into
contact with the Eco-flaps ® especially cross
winds.
This same curved, wing-type design allows the
wind to flow smoothly through the flap thus
creating less drag than traditional mudflaps.
This effect of the wind on aerodynamic
products such as Eco-flaps ® is so important that
the TMC (part of the ATA) is considering
recommending to add to the SAE testing
procedures that a certain amount of wind
speed be present during the testing on
aerodynamic truck products.
(View the traditional, solid mudflap in the
photo right).
“Binotto is a global company, with a complete range of hydraulic systems for tipping trucks, trailers and
semi-trailers, targeted at providing the best solution to satisfy all market needs, ensuring reliability,
high performance and durability in every product”.
“This is not a question, but rather a choice. A choice that we do not wish to relinquish, to maintain the unique
nature of our style. It is the choice of total control over production and continuous design innovation. Two key
features for a company in our sector, as this allows us to assure customers they have the best product, both from
a viewpoint of technology and service, at their disposal at all times”.
COMPLETE HYDRAULIC SOLUTIONS
OSC - One Shot Composable products. From the
experience and the history of the Group, OSC is the
possibility that Binotto offers to have from the same contact
(one shot) all the components for a complete hydraulic
tipping system, choosing from a very large range of
articles (composable).
With important advantages:
• only one source of technical information;
• reduced handling and administration costs;
• top-quality components and total compatibility.
STRENGTH POINTS
Binotto way of construction
What makes the difference of a Binotto cylinder?
• Steel producers accepted as Binotto strategic suppliers are only high quality supplier
(such as Dalmine and Mannesmann;
• For all the stages and for the outer tube, we exclusively use seamless steel tubes with
high yield points (RS ≥ 48 kg s /mm 2 ) and tensile strength (R ≥ 65 kg s /mm 2 );
• The Binotto tubes are roll hardened for exceptional smoothness. This feature of the
tubes linked to the special sliders doesn’t permit more of 0,07 mm of clearance
between the stages, which is a good help to resist to side loads and bending factors;
• The solid design still remains an unsurpassed solution: it is the special Binotto design,
with stop contact faces directly from the solid tube, without welds;
• Total absence of stop-limit rings: the stop-limit is obtained on the pure pipe to provide
the user with a maximum safety when the cylinder is wide open;
• The internal and external “rolling” burnishing process for all the stages and the outer
tube allows us to supply reliable and long-lasting incomparable products (increasing
the seal lifetime);
• The seal and wiper system is tested and proved to run in the most close to the limit
environments, from the Siberian Steppe to the Saudi deserts.
FRONT END CYLINDERS
Why choose a Binotto front end ram?
Front end tipping rams remain the favourite design for the great majority of Malaysia tipper businesses. They´re
reliable, simple to operate, easy to maintain and low in weight. With the highest standards of product
design, machining accuracy and material quality, Binotto front end cylinders offer a unique combination of
operating benefits.
But where Binotto also wins is with its range. For 7.5 tonners, for example, the TFC75 model completely fits
the bill in terms of specification, performance and value. Whilst for larger 4x2, 6x4 and 8x4 rigids,
operators have a choice between the MFC range where ram and tank are separate, or the TFC models where
they are combined.
For 44 tonnes operation, cylinders for semi-trailers are offered in two versions, outer cover or top-eye, both with
lower trunnions.
Features include
• Suitable for 7.5 - 44 tonnes gvw
• Available with combined or separate ram
and tank
• Valve located on top of the tank for easy
access
• Premium grade steel for strength and
stability
• Unsurpassed design and production
technologies
• Proven reliability and durability
• Easy and safe in operation
UNDERFLOOR CYLINDERS
Why choose Binotto underfloor tipping gear?
Underfloor tipping gears are the obvious choice for vehicles such as crane tippers where the space behind the
cab has already been occupied.
Binotto offers a range of underfloor cylinders to cover all rigid chassis from 3.5 to 32 tonnes gvw.
Rugged, compact, light in weight and simple to use, the Binotto underfloor range includes models for both
conventional rear end as well as 3-way tipping. Added operating versatility is really what Binotto underfloors
are all about, with installation for bodybuilders also being easy and uncomplicated.
Features include:
• Models to suit 3.5 - 32 tonnes gvw
• Ideal for crane and grab applications
• Full range of 3-way tipping gears
• High strength, compact and lightweight
• Proven reliability and durability
• Easy and safe in operation
INFOline : Technical Info
When and How to Inspect Brake Drums
In order to maximize the service life of your brake drums,
proper installation, periodic inspection and maintenance
procedures must be followed. The information contained
herewith will help in establishing a brake drum maintenance
program that assist you identifying problems and obtain the
necessary corrective measures to restore balanced braking
and ensure safe, reliable brake system performance.
Consistent, reliable brake system performance is dependent on a sound brake
system maintenance program. It is important that regular scheduled inspections of
the brake system are incorporated into your preventive maintenance program.
By incorporating a regular brake inspection program your cost-per-mile will be
significantly reduced. Costly downtime can be reduced by spotting problems
before they take a vehicle out of service for extended periods of time.
While there is no specific recommended timetable for brake system inspection,
we suggest that you establish a regular and thorough inspection procedure.
Following are some of the common problems encountered during regular brake
drum inspection and the recommended procedures.
FACTORY BALANCED BRAKE DRUMS
Gunite makes two types of factory balanced brake drums, machined-to-balance
and traditional welded balance weights. Both styles are balanced to the same
factory specifications (10 inch ounces - front axle and 20 inchounces - rear drive
and trailer axle) and will provide identical performance. When ordering
replacement drums or installing new drums during normal brake service, it is
acceptable to interchange machined-to-balance with traditional weight balanced
drums.
Welded balance weight
Figure 1
Figure 2
PROPER STORAGE OF HEAVY-DUTY BRAKE DRUMS
Correct Storage Method:
Drums should be stored in an area free from excess moisture and stacked as
shown in Figure 1, to ensure proper distribution of weight on the sidewalls of the
drum. Properly stacking new drums will avoid distortion of the sidewalls or
damage to the braking surface.
Incorrect Storage Methods:
Storing brake drums by “nesting” one drum in another or resting the drums on their
side “book end”, as shown in Figure 2, will result in damage to the drums. Storing
drums in any of these ways will cause an out-of-round condition to occur which
will require machining to restore concentricity before installation. This will
significantly reduce the service life of the drum and create unnecessary expense
due to the machining of a new drum.
Page
18
For more information (603) 6188 8388 ysl@yslsb.com.my

INSTALLING NEW BRAKE DRUMS
When installing new brake drums, it is advisable to check all components of the brake system for wear and thoroughly clean them prior to installing
the new drum. The brake system should also be checked for proper adjustment and balance to ensure proper operation.
HUB PILOTED VS BALL SEAT DRUMS
It is important to make sure that the correct hub and drum
combination is used when replacing wheel-end assemblies.
Incorrect or mismatched parts may result in loose or broken
mounting studs or wheel-ends which can result in an accident.
If you are unsure about the correct combination for your
Older ball seat mountings have a close fit between the drum stud
holes and stud diameter. The drum is installed on the hub pilot.
The wheels are piloted on the studs using inner and outer cap nuts.
(see Figure 3)
Figure 3 - A ball seat disc wheel mount
Hub piloted mountings have a close fit between the drum pilot and
the machined pilot (continuous or interrupted) on the hub. The drum
bolt mounting holes are larger than the stud diameter. The wheels
and drum are piloted on the hub. (see Figure 4)
New drum designs will allow you to use the same drum for ball
seat and hub piloted applications when matched with the proper
hub. These new drums cannot be used with older hubs which have
a different pilot diameter. Matching the drums with the proper hub
is critical in providing and maintaining the support of the
wheel-end.
Haldex TK + ABS
The Haldex TK + has been developed to
satisfy the legislative requirements of
Regulation 13/10 and is an ABS/ ASR
system offering many installation
options. It can provide 4S/4M ABS or
4S/3M ABS using a single modulator
on the steering or driven axle. ASR is
also available on 4M and 3M systems
with two rear modulators. The system
has separate data communication
interfaces according to SAE J1939 for
control and diagnostics. Many
functions can be provided using either
hardware or the control data interface
in accordance with SAE J1939.
The system operates by analysing
individual wheel speeds and takes
anti-lock action by removing the brake
from a wheel or wheels when a
predetermined level of wheel
deceleration and slip have been
achieved. When such a signal is seen
by the controller and the respective
solenoid in the control valve is
energised the pressure in the brake
chamber relative to that wheel is
exhausted. When wheel acceleration
occurs the control solenoid is
deenergised and the brake reapplied.
The ABS valve was developed to
ensure that air is able to pass rapidly
both to and from the brake chambers.
While the valve is able to meet the air
flow requirements of satisfactory
anti-lock operation the overall
performance of a vehicle in terms of
stability and driver comfort is
dependant on the correct system air
flow characteristics being achieved.
These criteria are not purely a function
of the ABS valve but are directly related
to the level of pipework, pipe fittings
and port size en route from the ABS
valve to brake chamber. Therefore, to
ensure that the requisite parameters are
achieved it is recommended that the
guidelines of this instruction are
adhered to at all times. Failure to follow
this instruction may result in reduced
stability and driver comfort.
The TK + system fitted has 4 Sensors and
3 or 4 Modulators (ABS valves), the
configuration being 4S/3M, 4S/3MR
or 4S/4M. The Electronic control unit
(ECU) is not a sealed unit and must be
mounted in cab. The ABS valves have a
three pin electrical connector and are
chassis mounted. The ABS valves are
not handed and can be fitted at left or
right, front or rear positions.
The TK + system features as an optional
fit an external brake apply valve.
This will mitigate loss of torque to the
driven wheels when traction is lost by
selectively braking the slipping wheel.
The TK + system is also available with a
stand alone PC based diagnostic
system. This is a custom application
which provides a simple easy to use
interface to the TK + ABS unit for system
configuration, diagnostics and fault
monitoring.
