I have a lim<strong>it</strong>ed <strong>read</strong>ing l<strong>is</strong>t in <strong>the</strong> belief that less <strong>is</strong> more in learning economics. I may<br />
occasionally supplement <strong>the</strong> <strong>read</strong>ing l<strong>is</strong>t w<strong>it</strong>h some current material from <strong>the</strong> flood of<br />
media generated data on international <strong>is</strong>sues, particularly from <strong>the</strong> Econom<strong>is</strong>t. I<br />
encourage students <strong>to</strong> do likew<strong>is</strong>e.<br />
Practice thinking like an econom<strong>is</strong>t as you <strong>read</strong> or l<strong>is</strong>ten <strong>to</strong> popular descriptions of<br />
economic affairs; you will enjoy understanding more about <strong>the</strong> world and become more<br />
adept at taking exams in economics. Also, you may impress your friends (though th<strong>is</strong> can<br />
easily backfire) and eventually prospective employers or clients.<br />
Memorizing <strong>is</strong> not a successful strategy in th<strong>is</strong> course; practicing analys<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong>. Practicing <strong>is</strong><br />
done w<strong>it</strong>h exerc<strong>is</strong>es: besides those assigned <strong>it</strong> <strong>is</strong> best <strong>to</strong> do all of <strong>the</strong>m. The <strong>text</strong>book<br />
webs<strong>it</strong>e has fur<strong>the</strong>r support materials including exerc<strong>is</strong>es. Past experience indicates<br />
<strong>it</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>very</strong> <strong>useful</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>read</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>text</strong> <strong>before</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>lecture</strong>.
EC371 Spring 2013 2<br />

Class participation counts in determining whe<strong>the</strong>r you get <strong>the</strong> benef<strong>it</strong> of <strong>the</strong> doubt.<br />
Academic integr<strong>it</strong>y <strong>is</strong> central <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sion of higher education. Please observe <strong>the</strong><br />
highest standards of academic integr<strong>it</strong>y in th<strong>is</strong> course. Please review <strong>the</strong> standards and<br />

please consult w<strong>it</strong>h me. Violations will be reported <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Deans' Office and reviewed by<br />
