r.. fter three years of isolation in
dingy confines of the Big 8
ar, the Central cage team
bed a notch up the ladder. The
age and Black defeated the
cellar-dwelling Racine Horlick
eis in the Central gym on Feb.
y the score of 5848.
le first half was hectic as the
- changed hands many times
Murray Icon picked up four
k personal fouls. The third
rter saw Central pulling away.
the fourth quarter, Horlick
bed to one point behind the
!ntowners, 47-46. It was at this
Tough on West
ouhgreatly favored, the
High cagers were happy to
1 their gym on Feb. 22 with
victory over the Central
first half represented an allt
for the lead. Central led
after the first quarter, but
walked off at halftime wth
advantage. The.third quarthe
score tied twice, as
the Tigers or the Regents
an edge in scoring. In the
quarter Central pulled to
one point of West at 39-38.
ary Isom played a fine
9und game, leading scorers
17 points and holding highg
3 baskets, all in the -first
Another Interesting note
the game is that although
John Weer and Mueheimlann
6, and Tom Weier 5. The
other Central point was contributed
by Don Olson.
Although Central finished seventh
in the Big 8 standings and in
team scoring, they were 3rd in defense,
finishing behind East and
West, the conference leaders,, in
points allowed. Murray ison captured
sixth place in Big 8 scoring
with 190 points.
Four Lake.
Another phase of basketball for
many Central students is Four
Lakes.
Four Lakes combines the four
schools, East, West, Central and
Wisconsin High, and each school
has teams in the six divisions or
leagues. The season lasts from late
November to the first of March
with the boys being guaranteed
nine Saturdays of play. Three
adults supervise every game; a
faculty member, the supervisor of
the gym, and the referee. Central's
5 teams, the Cardinals, Martins,
Hawks, Orioles, and Bluebirds
did well for themselve.this season.
The Cardinals won first place
in their league and the Bluebirds
tied for first in their league.
Staff Selects
GIRL' ~
$ pOR~s
On Saturday, March 8 a volleyball
playday was held at West
High School from one to four in
the afternoon. About 85 girls from
Central, East, West, Monona-Grove,
and Wisconsin High participated.
The girls were placed on 12
teams, each having seven or eight
members. Eight 20-minute games
were played to determine the two
top teams. Then these teams played
to find the champions. Each
member of the winning team received
a blue ribbon; the second
place team members were given
white ones.
Out of the 85 girls, 11
were
from Central. One of them, Kathy
Overton, was on the championship
team; another, Janice Jorgenson,
was on the second place team.
Sophs Drop 2,
Tie For Fifth
Due to successive losses to West
and Horlick, the Sophomores saw
their record drop to 4-10. This left
the Orange and Black in a threeway
tie with East and Kenosha for
fifth place In the final Big 8 standings.
After a close first half in which
they trailed only 26-23, the Sophomore
quintet dropped a 57-59 game
on the West home floor. The second
half was especially disheartening
as the Orange and Black
only managed to score 16 compared
to West's 31 points. Keith
Grauvogl led the Downtowners
with 22, while his brother Ken
added six. Dick Berens with eight
points was the only other Central
player to score more than two. Incidentally,
the West Sophomore
All-City players, John Ihde, Luke
Groser, and Ed Corcoran, scored
nineteen, seventeen, and n iine
points, respectively.
Against Horlick on Feb. 28, the
Central quintet lost la hard-fought
47-31 decision. The first half was
close as the Rebels had only a 23-
20 lead. But the second half saw
the Downtowners only score 11
points compared to Horlick's 24.
