STUDENT COUNCIL ON GO
Candy Is
Homemaker
Finishing first in a written aptitude
and knowledge examination for senior
girls on Dec. 5th, Candy Johnson has
been named the 1968 Betty Crocker Homemaker
of Tomorrow for Central High.
Candy's achievement has made her eligible
for state and national scholarship
awards.
A state homemaker and runner up will
be selected from the winners of the state
schools. The state winner will receive
a $1, 500 college scholarship and her
school will be awarded a complete set
of the Encyclopedia Britannica. The 2nd
place winners receive a $500 education
grant.
The state winners in the 14th annual
contest will journey to colonial Williamsburgwhere
they are eligible to compete
for scholarships up to $5, 000.
Congratulations to Candy and good luck
in the state competition.
What has happened lately in Student
Council? What is being planned?
Recently, the Student Council passed
a resolution criticizing the lighting in
the Learning Center. We discussed
the effects of this poor lighting on our
studying and decided that since the
Administration forces our usage of the
Center, they should therefore improve
the atmosphere there for our studying.
MIDWINTER I S
BIG SUCCESS
Winter scenes, including a comfortable
ski chalet, highlighted the annual
Mid-Winter dance held January 27th.
The dance, held in Scanlon Hall, was
sponsored by the Sophomore class. A
large crowd danced to the music of the
Daze of Nite band or relaxed and chatted
among the colorful snow and ice settings.
The Sophomore class is to be congratulated
for their fine effort.
SUMMER JOBS
Boys would you like to spend the summer
working in conservation and get paid
for it? Well you can. The State of
Wisconsin offers such a program during
the months of June, July, andAugust.
The camps, there are three, are looking
for boys sixteen to nineteen for this
summer. Further information may be
obtained in the guidance office or ask
Dave Wheeler who has spent the past two
summers there. Hurry because deadline
is the last of February.
The MCU Pool Tournament has been
canceled due to lack of interest.
Central Colony appreciated all the old
toys and books which were collected in
the halls last semester. The Juniors
contributed the most in that drive which
netted several boxes of usable materiales.
The Student Directory will be out this
month according to Gary Johnson,
chairman of the committee. This alphabetical
listing will contain all the names,
addresses, and telephone numbers of
Central Students. What a bargain for
25 ! You will be able to purchase yours
from your Student Council delegate.
The dusty Student Council suggestion
box is hungry. Got a gripe? Go to the
Aud now and register it. Mayhaps the
Student Council can help.
Anyone interested in an MCU sweatshirt?
Contact Brian Thompson for
full information and prices.
If you want to know more about your
Student Council, check the 3rd Floor
Bulletin Board regularly. Hidden among
the baby pictures and birthday announcements
are the listings of various upcoming
events and other informative
materials.
Student Council Officer Elections are
just around the corner. Start thinking
about running. If you have a chance,
go to a Student Council meeting to see
how it works.
Plans are now being formulated for a
year-end all-school yearbook signing
party. Tentatively, there will be free
snacks and music in the gym after school
on the day the yearbooks arrive. Any
Central Student will be admitted free if
he can prove he owns a yearbook. Any
reactions to this idea?

Are Centralites
Let's play a guess-who game. Here
is the clue. She's been a cheerleader
and Student Council leader since her
freshman year, and this year was elected
Corresponding Secretary. Of course
you know by now that I'm talking about
Shirley Johnson.
Everybody also knows that Shirl is the
Assistant Editor of Ty. During Homecoming
festivities, besides working on
the field and refreshments committees,
she was busy getting ready for the parade,
Aud program and dance as she was
a member of the Court.
Shirley has also been an active member
of the Music department. She is in
Orchestra, Choir and Girls Ensemble.
Besides these activites, she has participated
in French Club, Prom Committee
and Pep Committee.
Inspite of all these activities Shirley
has kept her grades up and was elected
to National Honor Society. Outside of
school, Shirley is active in the Wisconsin
Youth Council, likes all sports, sewing
and dancing.
Post high school plans include attending
Howard University in Washington.
Meet Gary Johnson, Central's All-
American guy. If you don't agree with
this you can at least admit he's on his
way to becoming one. Athletically, he
has been active on the swim team for
three years. Academically, Gary has
for three years been a Student Council
member, was elected to National Honor
Society and participated in the mock
city government at Badger Boys State.
He is considered a "head" in many activities
such as being editor of the Ty,
senior-class president, andtreasurer
of Madison Youth Council. Gary proves
himself socially as well, having worked
on Prom as a junior and being elected
to Homecoming Court this year. These
are just a few examples to prove that
Gary is a Super-Centralite.
Jeff Meuer Paces Madison
Size and shooting continue to plague
Coach Harris' varsity five as the team
heads into the final two weekends of t he
season.
The Tigers have been out rebounded
in many games and a big scoring punch
along the lines of a Bill Bssett is needed
Jeff Jeuer and Ted Gervasi continue to
Central
From the efforts of Mr. Wiebe's and
Mr. Kelliher's sophomore and frehman
teams, the Varsity should get some
extra help next year.
Rebounding strength is on the way with
Tom Voll, Bill Schmelzer and Freslian
Dale Schultz. Shooting help is expect e d
from Carl hin , Gary Swenson , Rick
Johnson and John Williams.
Both teams are to be commended for
their fine play and great hustle this year.
"Tigerfish "
Competing chiefly in triangular meets
due to a lack of man power - there are
only eight - the Central Tigerfish hav
found much rough water.
Chief point-getters for the orange and
black have been divers, Donn Gladstone
and Bob Wombacher, and short-distant
man, Dick Steeper
The boys are presently preparing for
city conference and tournament action
Despite recent losses to city rivals
East and West, Central's icemen still
set the pace in Central winter sports
with a 3-4 record.
In last week's action, defeats by East
6-1 and West 6-2 eliminated the Tigers
from city title competition. East scored
early and was never headed and the West
Regents, fresh from an upset of La-
Follette, came on strong with four 3rd
period goals to trim the Downtowner s
who had tied the score two and two on
goals by Robby Robson and Bill Teascale
Tiger standouts have been high scoring
sophomore Robson, great defensive play
by John Jordan who has also contributed
six goals, aggressive puck-stealing
and passing by Buster Mathews and all
around good performances by Bill Teasdale
and Ron Ryan.
The team has been weakened by the
recent loss of first line defensemanRon
Ryan with a shoulder injury.
City action closed with Friday's dual
match against Memorial and the team,
coached by Mr. Putnam, now prepares
for the State Invitational.
Lenny drives for
the bucket in action
against the
East Purgolders.
John Daniel (10)
moves in for the
rebound as Bob
Storch (55), who
hit for 30 points
in East"s victory,
gets position.
