Olathe South
To empower all students for the challenges of the future.
Dear Olathe South High School Families…
Occasionally, we take moments to wander back in time for the purpose of reminder, reflection,
inspiration or just because. Our archives include past newsletters which provide
opportunities for a glimpse into our heritage.
In March, 2006, we shared about a special guest to Olathe South who presented as a
part of the Olathe South 21st Century Professional Careers Academy lecture series. In
conjunction with February’s Black History month, this gentleman spoke of history, education,
opportunity, life and love. He had traveled the world, played with many of the great baseball
players of all time, shook hands with countless international leaders and made certain he’d
hugged their spouses. Yet, in his opening remarks to the students of Olathe South, he mentioned
there was no place he’d rather be than talking with the youth of America. He was believable.
He was an extremely busy man, but did not rush. For over an hour and one half, he was totally
and passionately among us. He was a special human being and it was a special day. His name…
Mr. Buck O’Neil.
Google him and you’ll discover he was, even at age 94, an extremely busy man. But once again,
on March 2, 2006, he was totally and passionately among us. He did not rush. Once introduced,
we were no longer strangers. The Olathe South community and Mr. Buck O’Neil would have an
opportunity to know one another. For those fortunate to have this experience, his was a model
of choosing to live one’s life with love and joy. It was obvious there were life experiences which,
for most, would produce bitterness. But as filmmaker Ken Burns once wrote about Buck O’Neil,
“there is no bitterness in him.” In our short time together, we would bear witness.
Now for each of us… some personal reflection: The hectic nature of our existence makes it understandable,
and perhaps even expected, for us to review a given day and then, accept the fact that
it was one of those when we couldn’t slow it down enough to invest in someone else. We rush,
we lose and such goes our life. One could argue, “Well, there are those days which are simply
‘one of those.’” Again, understandable and perhaps even expected, but when one reviews the
week… what might one discover? Among us, there are certainly those who will realize the “one
of those days” actually included a series of “one of thoses” and then, the explanation expands to
“one of those weeks.” Carry the argument further and then, determine for one self, “Where does
it end and am I choosing to be content with ‘such goes my life?’”
If one were to able to see “interruptions” as “opportunities,” would we rush less? With
opportunity as the focus, would “burden or sacrifice” be deemed “privilege instead?” Would one
discontinue searching for the “escape hatch” and replace it with pursuit of additional strength?
The kind of strength which fosters a conviction that we will achieve greater successes regarding
the time we reserve for the “someone else(s)” who are either a part of our life or enter it.
Mr. Buck O’Neil died on October 7, 2006. Certainly, he had celebrity status and, as a result, some
admiration tied to his fame. But, for those who were not strangers, it is how he chose to live
which will be remembered. During our time with him and as a common thread among his
speaking engagements, he invited us all to hold hands and join him in his special song. The lyrics
are simple, but beautiful. “The greatest thing in all my life is loving you.”
We invite one another to consider rushing less, seeking the strength to accomplish more and
making time for those around us.
Seniors
Know your financial aid offers
When you receive offers from colleges, be aware of the terms of any financial aid offers. In
the case of federal, state and many institutional aid programs, you are required to re-apply
each year. Nearly every scholarship also carries with it an obligation to carry a minimum
course load and to maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA). It's important to read all
financial aid documents carefully and understand their terms and conditions. The same goes
for loans. You need to consider the terms of any loan—both the interest rate and when repayment
is to begin. Make sure you understand everything before you sign any documents. If
you have questions, ask a financial aid officer at the college for help.
Does financial aid, FAFSA, and scholarships have you scratching your head?
http://studentaid.ed.gov is the US Department of Education website with lots of valuable
information about student aid.
Financial Aid Package ― The total amount of financial aid (federal and nonfederal) a student
receives. The financial aid administrator at a post-secondary institution combines various
forms of aid (federal aid, state aid, scholarships, etc.) into a “package” to help meet a student’s
need. Using available resources to give each student the best possible package of aid is
one of the aid administrator’s major responsibilities. Because funds are often limited, a financial
aid package might fall short of the amount for which a student is eligible. Also, the
amount of federal student aid in a financial aid package is affected by other sources of aid
received (scholarships, state aid, etc.).
Juniors
If you are planning on attending a four-year university after high school, it is recommended
that you take the ACT in the spring. If you haven’t yet taken the ACT, consider signing up for
the April 13 or the June 8 test. Register by March 8 for the April 13 or May 3 for the June 8
@ www.actstudents.org
**Spring and summer are also good times to make college campus visits!
AP Test Registration
Registration for the AP tests will be done online again this year. Registration will end at midnight
on March 23, no exceptions and the cost is $87 per test. To register, log onto
http://user.totalregistration.net/AP/172222 and follow the directions on the website. For
additional information and exam times and dates, check our school website at http://
schools.olatheschools.com/olathesouth/students/testing.html or see Patty Bondurant in the
counseling office. Computers are available to students before and after school.
Freshmen and Sophomores
Freshmen and sophomores have received their results from the ACT Explore and ACT Plan
test. Please take a moment to discuss the results with your student. Contact your counselor
if you have further questions.
Academic Awards
The Freshman/Sophomore/Junior Recognition will be held on Monday, April 22, at 6:00 p.m.
in the auditorium. Senior Recognition will begin at 7:30 p.m. You will receive an invitation
if your student will be recognized. We will be awarding certificates for
excellence in individual classes and for reaching a 3.75 grade or better
grade point average.
Counselors in the Senior Classroom
Olathe South counselors will be meeting with all seniors in March 26 to explain
the reporting process of scholarships that have been offered and accepted by
the student. Please help your students be prepared to fill out their scholarship
information. All scholarships that have been offered and/or accepted need to be reported
to Student Services. Scholarships reported by April 1 will be included in the Senior
Recognition program on April 22.
All students being honored will receive an invitation in the mail.
**In order to be recognized, students need to notify Student Services of all scholarships
offered and/or accepted.
Olathe South Presents
Nearly 100 students from the Performing Arts Department have been working on this
musical. The following is a description of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat” from Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatricals:
The story of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful
musical parable. Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic
dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph
endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually
challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's
wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the
Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming
second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find
themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize.
After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation
of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from countrywestern
and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this tale emerges both timely
and timeless.
Tickets for March 7, 8 & 9 can be purchased at :
http://www.olathesouththeatre.org/buy-tickets-now.html
All seats are reserved. Pick your ticket ahead of time by buying online.
Don't miss this fun musical that is great for the whole family!
Beyond Autobahn
German teacher Dr. Scott Seeger received the following notice:
This year, 15,000 students from all over the U.S. and Canada participated in the
contest by watching our film "Beyond Autobahn" and answering the quiz question
about German car culture. The correct answer to our question, "How many teens in
Germany got their driver's license in 2010?" was 648,141!
Everyone who solved the quiz was automatically entered into a lottery for a chance
to win our first prize: a Young Learners' Course in Germany in summer 2013. Kristen
Bieber, sophomore from Olathe South High School, (USA) was one of the winners
of the Award of Excellence 2012 and will receive a scholarship for 3 weeks in Germany!

Spring Blood Drive
It is never too early to consider donating blood with your OSHS student. SASH is, once again, bringing
the Spring Blood Drive to South on Thursday, April 25. Sign up online at: www.savealifenow.org. You
can search for our drive by zip code, city, or our Sponsor Code of: olathesouthhs
Hydrating the day before and eating a good breakfast on the day you donate blood greatly reduces the
possibility of a reaction. We would love to offer students a Breakfast Voucher the day of the drive. To
make this possible, we are needing monetary donations of any amount to pay for
a nutritious breakfast / snack for each student signed up to donate. In recognition of your
sponsorship, each voucher could feature your name or business. SASH is also looking for donated items for our Door Prizes and
Give-Aways. Join Community Sponsors like Hy-Vee, Papa Johns, and Entercom Radio and support the gift of life. We will recognize
even the smallest of donations the day of the drive, thanking all our sponsors on a sign.
Please contact Angi Verstraete, SASH Faculty Advisor, at (913) 780-7160 to become a Community Sponsor or to answer any questions
you may have.
Interpreters will be provided for special events if sufficient
notice is given. Please call the office to let us know of your
needs at least 5 days prior to the scheduled event.
