Robert Chen plays Bartók’s two Violin
Rhapsodies, impassioned works filled with
Hungarian folk music and demanding
brilliant virtuosity. Mahler’s gorgeous Fifth
Symphony reflects many moments of
personal significance to the composer,
including the ravishing Adagietto that was
a musical love letter to his wife, Alma.
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 1
Shostakovich Symphony No. 8
Winner of the 2011 Tchaikovsky
International Piano Competition, Daniil
Trifonov excites critics and audiences
worldwide: “He offers far more than mere
virtuosity… he demonstrates an elegant
touch, witty grace and poetic insight”
(The New York Times). In this appearance
with the CSO, he performs Rachmaninov’s
youthfully exuberant First Piano Concerto.
Conductor Semyon Bychkov pairs this
work with Shostakovich’s most ferocious
symphony, a 1943 work that reflects WWII
in its relentless third-movement scherzo,
punctuated with breathtaking squeals and
crashes as if from flying missiles.
Bates Anthology of Fantastic Zoology
[World premiere, CSO commission]
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5
Riccardo Muti’s final installment in his cycle
of the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies
features the noble yet poignant Fifth, with
its memorable horn solo and haunting
waltz. This cherished masterwork is paired
with the world premiere of Mead Composerin-Residence
Mason Bates’ Anthology of
Fantastic Zoology. Based on the book by
Luis Borges, it promises music inspired
by fantastic creatures like sprites, nymphs,
sirens, banshees, and naga—to name only
a few.
