Homecoming for Towson’s next president
Maravene Loeschke
assumes duties Jan. 1
LAUREN SLAVIN
Editor-in-Chief
Towson University’s 2011 Homecoming Week has brought
back one alumna who will make an impact on campus long
after Saturday’s football game.
The University System of Maryland Board of Regents
named Maravene Loeschke Towson University’s next president
Monday, Sept. 19.
Loeschke, a Towson alumna and former dean of the College
of Fine Arts and Communication, is the current president of
Mansfield University in Pennsylvania.
“I am so overjoyed, I don’t know if I’ve ever been happier in
anything in my professional life,” Loeschke said. “I have always
held Towson so tight and dearly, and to be coming back … I’m
overwhelmed by the opportunity.”
Before her five-year term at MU, Loeschke served as provost
of Wilkes University in Scranton, Pa., from 2002 to 2006.
But the largest portion of her resumé comes from Towson
University, after she earned a Bachelor of Science in theatre
and English, as well as a Master of Education, and then spent
30 years in the roles of professor and chairperson in the department
of theatre arts and dean of COFAC.
Loeschke’s experience at Towson University made her an
attractive candidate to the Presidential Search Committee, as
well as to the USM Board of Regents and Chancellor William
“Brit” Kirwan.
“Her sense of affection and commitment to Towson is so
evident,” Kirwan said. “She feels she owes her successful professional
career to her start at Towson. It’s not all that often a
university can hire an alumnus back as president.”
Many of the challenges Loeschke dealt with at Mansfield are
Courtesy of Mansfield University
Towson University’s next president, Maravene Loeschke, currently
holds the same position at Mansfield University in Central Pa.
similar to those Towson is or could soon be facing.
In May 2010, $4 million in budget cuts were made
to Mansfield for the 2011-12 fiscal year, which led to
faculty layoffs and larger class sizes for students. Cuts
in state funding for higher education were also made
in March, which led to a 7.5 percent tuition increase
and a five percent drop in enrollment at Mansfield
University.
“We haven’t faced those kinds of cuts in Maryland,
but they could be coming,” Kirwan said. “She exhibited
strong leadership in addressing a very difficult
situation.”
Mansfield University has an undergraduate population
of approximately 3,500 students compared to
Towson’s approximately 21,000. Loeschke said she
values personal interaction with students and had very
close relationships with MU students.
Kirwan said Loeschke would keep the president’s
house porch light on to let students know they could
come in to visit with her. One of her challenges as
president of Towson University will be staying similarly
active with the student body. The TU president’s
house is in Guilford, approximately three miles from
campus.
“I’m going to miss these [MU] students terribly.
They are wonderful, wonderful young people … it’s
heart wrenching to think I won’t be able to see
them through commencement,” Loeschke said. “But
I look forward to having really solid relationships with
Towson University students.”
Loeschke said she was informed of her new position
Saturday after an interview with the USM Board of
Regents Friday.
Towson University senior and member of the
Presidential Search Committee Angie Hong said
Loeschke was one of three candidates the committee
recommended to the USM at the end of the summer.
She would not name the other two finalists.
Don’t get too
Josh Brown
Columnist
Gentleman’s
Corner
tied up
Ties don’t really make sense. They’re expensive, you
never seem to have the right one for your outfit, and
the fact that there are more than 85 ways to tie one
may seem daunting and intimidating to those of you
who might still be using clip-ons.
In addition, they can be uncomfortable, find their way into your morning
coffee if you lean over too far, and flap around in your face every time
a brisk breeze rolls by.
Yet somehow, ties seem to be permanently and unremittingly ingrained in
our standards of fashion and professionalism, and it seems like it’ll be that
way for a long time to come.
Guys need ties. It’s a fact. And sooner or later, you’re going to have to
learn how to tie one by yourself.
The first thing to do is to take a look at your collection (if you have one)
and throw out anything wider than four inches. If you’re inheriting your ties
from a parent or a grandparent, you’ll probably run into several of these.
Wider ties were popular in the 70s, but they just don’t cut it in today’s
standards.
The widely-accepted professional norm is 3.75 inches, and skinnier ties
are quickly finding their way into acceptance in the business world as well
(though for now, keep skinny ties reserved for casual and non-business
occasions.)
You may be surprised to find out that in addition to type of tie, different
knot styles also have their proper place and occasion.
You might not use the same knot for a job interview as you might for a
wedding or a classy night out. So which one do you choose?
The four most basic, widely used types of knots are the Windsor (often
incorrectly called the double Windsor), the half-Windsor, the four-in-hand,
and the Pratt.
Use the Windsor for the business occasions when you want to look especially
distinguished.
Try the half-Windsor for when you want to get the same conservative,
noble look as the Windsor, but with half the effort.
The four-in-hand is a skinnier knot best used in more casual situations
and with shirts that have narrower collar openings.
The Pratt knot is a good middle ground knot. It’s not as wide as the
Windsor and not quite as skinny as the four-in-hand. It’s relatively simple
to tie and it fits a bit looser around your neck.
Check out www.totieatie.com or random YouTube videos for instructions
on how to tie each one. For me to attempt to explain here would leave you
confused and frustrated, probably with your tie in more knots than you’d
like.
The last thing you’ll need to consider is what color and/or pattern is best
for your outfit.
The first big no-no is to never combine a striped tie with a striped shirt,
nor a checkered shirt with a checkered tie. Patterns on top of patterns can
be painful to look at, and if your shirt and tie have to fight each other for
attention, both will inevitably lose.
Colors should either complement or blend with each other. You can add
a classy boldness to your look through the proper contrast - check out a
color wheel like you used to see in art class and pair colors across from
each other.
It’s always safe to assume that white, black and other neutral colors will
go well with most anything.
The final piece of advice I can offer to ease the pain of dealing with this
conundrum of gentlemanly fashion is this: Invest in a good tie clip or two.
Tie clips keep you looking sharp and orderly throughout the day and help
keep the tie-in-the-coffee and wind-flapping incidents to a minimum. Keep
them simple. They should accentuate your outfit, not be the focus of it.
Best of luck, gents. Don’t get too tied up, now.
From tropical island to Towson
Samuel Olivares
Columnist
“If you are from Puerto Rico,
what are you doing here?” That’s
the question a lot of people asked
this week. Honestly, it’s better that
I don’t have a complete answer. Sometimes I prefer to stay
in the middle.
We can be in one place, but our mind and soul is somewhere
else entirely. Sometimes we are living, but in reality,
we don’t even realize we’re at such a point in our lives.
We must understand that life is short and our university
life will be gone before we know it. It’s time to decide
what we really want to do.
Whether that applies to our day-to-day lives or what we
want to do with our future. Is it worth the loneliness and
perhaps even tears of family back home to move out and
create a whole new life by yourself?
I came as part of an exchange program from a wonderful
tropical island called Puerto Rico, where millions go
yearly to enjoy the beautiful beaches and rainforest.
However, our goals are important, and mine is to
improve my English and become more prepared to go on
in an overly saturated and competitive business world. I’m
not here, I’m not there. I’m in the middle.
The past few weeks, everyone has been focusing on
the freshmen, and in a few months this will shift to the
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The first two football games were
unlike anything I have witnessed in
my four years at Towson. Not only
because the team won two games in
a row, which is a first in itself, but
also because of the way the team
dominated their two opponents.
Morgan State and Villanova did not
stand a chance.
Towson football manhandled a
top-20 team that is just two years
removed from an FCS national
championship. This team is not
messing around. The defense is
tenacious, the offense is strong both
running and passing, and frankly, if
the team can dominate Villanova,
they should be able to brush their
teeth with Colgate.
Another thing I have witnessed
that is unlike anything I have
seen is the enthusiasm from the
students and the fan base as a
whole. Certainly, that is in large
part due to the play of the team.
But fans packed the student section
and were vocal and on their
feet throughout the entirety of both
games. We did not just come out to
show our support.
We made our presence felt, and
we made a difference. Just think
how much bigger that presence
could be if the 7,000 or 9,000 of
Lost in the Middle
Show student support with a
sold-out Homecoming game
us could turn into 11,000. Imagine
how much more intimidating it
would look if the entire stadium
was packed, and not just the student
section. Imagine if we could
make the entire stadium one big
student section. We get in for free
and can sit wherever we want, so
there is no reason why this cannot
happen.
We have more than 20,000 students
at Towson to help fill an
11,000-seat stadium, and I know
that enough students tailgate to
sell out a football game. If you are
planning on tailgating before the
Homecoming game, actually go to
the game, too.
This team is worth watching.
And wouldn’t it be nice to help
them enter College Park with a better
record that the Terps?
I know I’ll be gathering a group of
people for the Homecoming game,
and I encourage you all to do the
same. Paint your faces, bleed black
and gold, and bring a toothbrush to
mock Colgate and show what our
football team is going to do to them.
Keep showing your Tiger Pride, and
keep restoring the roar. TU!
seniors. We, the junior students, are in the middle, and we
need to determine our destiny.
We are not in New York or Washington, D.C., we are
between two great places with great opportunities to take
advantage of.
My Latino heritage gives me a tan color between black
and white.
Puerto Ricans have citizenship, but we can’t vote
for the president. I’m not rich, but ‘m not starving.
Sometimes we are in the middle, but it means that we
have two paths to choose and we can make decisions
about our future.
I’m alone and inbetween two worlds. Sometimes we
need to leave our comfort zone and our attachments and
build our own path. I encourage you to meditate and ask
yourself if your acts are leading you down the correct
path.
To conclude, I want to share a fragment of poem by
Antonio Machado:
Wanderer, there is no path,
Path is made by walking,
Walking made the path.
And last look back,
There is the way
You’ll never step on again.
Asking for
a meeting
with YWC
In the SGA affiliation hearing
regarding Youth for Western
Civilization, it seemed that people
kept bringing up the idea of “hands
being tied,” of “not having a choice,”
or of facing legal action. The fact
is had any legal proceeding been
pursued, there would be great revelation
to those who seem fooled by
the intimidating rhetoric of Matthew
Heimbach.
Under the Constitution of the
United States, Mr. Heimbach does
have a right to assemble and voice
his opinion. However, neither YWC
nor Mr. Heimbach have any right to
be funded by or AFFILIATED with a
public institution.
By being an SGA affiliated group,
YWC is now affiliated with all of
Towson University. This is actually
a benefit of being an SGA affiliated
organization: being able to use the
Towson University name.
Legally, YWC could not be prevented
from meeting and trying to voice
their opinions. But nowhere does
the Constitution say Towson had to
A niche for the new president
Loeschke could have been chosen
to handle future budget cuts
Lauren Slavin
Editor-in-Chief
Our staff
would like
to join the
University
and surrounding
community
in welcoming
Maravene
Loeschke,
who will
assume the role of University president
on Jan. 1, 2012.
Since the announcement of
Robert Caret’s departure to take on
the presidency of the University of
Massachusetts System, news outlets
across the state have speculated
who would fill his shoes and
what their focus for the University
would be.
In my three years as a student
at Towson University, I’ve watched
our institution grow from a minefield
of construction detours to an
institute with facilities students,
faulty and staff deserve.
Honors students are now housed
in the newest residence hall, which
is close in proximity to the West
Village Commons, which can only
be compared to Facebook as the
University Union is to MySpace
(though outrage over these new
changes to Facebook are clogging
my feed.)
LETTERS (CON’T)
From page 4
support such actions. The Supreme Court has even said in
their legal opinions that there is no legal right or precedent
for any group with views inconsistent with a student body
or public institution’s values to be funded or AFFILIATED
by that student body or institution.
These are things that I was hoping to bring up in a
conversation with Mr. Heimbach himself. Though, it seems
no matter how much he claims to be reaching out to other
organizations, I have yet to see that effort.
When students aren’t sleeping
or slurping Jamba Juice, they’re
in classes in the finally-completed
College of Liberal Arts, with comfortable
seating for classes of all
sizes and technology that doesn’t
look like its from an episode of
“Bill Nye the Science Guy.”
But construction was Caret’s
concern, and changes to the administration
and faculty have thus far
fallen under the reign of Interim
President Marcia Welsh, who will
return to her position as provost
Jan. 1.
So what will Loeschke’s efforts
go toward? I haven’t been to a
casino since I turned 21, but if I
had bet money on athletics, which
I thought would be the next president’s
focal point, I’d need to pick
up a second job.
Since Director of Athletics Mike
Waddell was hired last fall, the
basketball and men’s lacrosse head
coaches have been replaced, ground
has been broken on a new indoor
arena, Doc’s Army has become a
program only for paying users, football
is 2-0, and according to a
Tweet from Waddell Wednesday
morning, “football ticket revenues
for the 2011 season have already
exceeded the sales for all of 2010.”
I won’t jinx it, but Towson could
soon be more than a laughingstock
Why the hate for YWC?
Having attended Towson for only a few short weeks
now, I find myself asking how my compatriots and I
have managed to attract such a gratifying amount of
attention already.
Indeed, our new chapter of Youth for Western
Civilization has seen more coverage this past week
than many see in an entire year. So, first things first:
Thank you!
Still, most of this attention has been decidedly negative,
so I wanted to address some of what we’ve been
hearing.
First: We do NOT hate gay people. We simply do
not support gay marriage. This is a view we share with
many Americans and quite a few other organizations,
like the Catholic Church.
If you disagree, great! Let’s talk about it. And yes, we
INSIST upon going out for pizza afterwards.
Recently, club President Matthew Heimbach and I
in the eyes on college athletics.
So color me surprised by
Loeschke’s credentials: TU alumna
with a degree in theatre and English
and professor in the department
of theatre arts, and current president
of Mansfield University, where
some of her main initiatives were in
diversity and community relations.
Interim President Welsh said she
doesn’t see the current focus of
Towson University (following out
2016 Master Plan) shifting to the
arts, but she does wish the state
could see TU as a premiere arts
institute.
So if Towson isn’t going artsy
fartsy, why Loeschke?
It could be because she navigated
Mansfield through some
of the roughest budget cuts in
Pennsylvania history. The
University System of Maryland has
yet to approve the Fall 2013 budget,
but USM Chancellor William “Brit”
Kirwan seemed to allude that similar
cuts could be in Maryland’s
future. As Welsh put it, budget cuts
are always looming.
Towson University self-imposed
four percent budget cuts this year.
“We’ve been warranted to be cautious,”
Welsh said Tuesday. “I can’t
imagine having a cut beyond what
we’re prepared for.”
I hate to say time will tell, but
hopefully that time is sooner rather
than later.
Look for Towerlight interviews
In fact, I have only witnessed efforts by Mr. Heimbach to
approach other student organizations that resulted in him
yelling and spreading hateful rhetoric. Maybe it’s just me
that he refuses to respond to, but I think there are plenty
more questions that could be asked-- I wonder if we’ll ever
get the answers.
actually a cover for an event which advocates for the
destruction of Muslims.
Really? I mean, honestly, folks, that is pretty cynical.
At this point, it seems that the people and groups
opposing us have already decided that we are racist
and are trying to make everything we say or do fit into
that image.
Frankly, I don’t understand how these groups claim
to support diversity.
If we hate diversity so much, why are we the ones
welcoming other opinions?
From what I’ve seen so far, Towson University can
claim to support diversity in every way, as long as diversity
of opinion doesn’t count.
TIGER “TAIL”GATING
PROCEDURES
In an effort to present the Towson University community in a positive manner, please be aware of the following Tiger
Tailgating Procedures. For a complete list of the Towson University Tailgating Policy and Procedures, please visit:
http://www.towson.edu/studentaffairs/policies/tailgatingpolicy.asp.
A. All state & local laws and University policies are in effect during tailgating. Consistent with these, it is prohibited
for a person under the age of 21 years to purchase, possess, consume, transport, or store alcoholic beverages.
B. Excessive amounts of beer and wine are not permitted, i.e., no more than one six pack of beer per person.
C. Hard liquor and spirits are prohibited during tailgating, including, but not limited to Jell-O-shots, shooters.
D. Beer kegs, party balls, multi-quart containers of beer, and all drinking paraphernalia (including, but not limited to
funnels, beer bongs, ice luges) and drinking games of any sort are prohibited from tailgating because of the
encouragement of rapid consumption of alcohol.
E. Excessive amounts of alcohol as determined by event staff will not be permitted.
F. It is also prohibited for any person or group to purchase or give alcoholic beverages to a person under 21 years
of age.
G. The consumption of alcoholic beverages by those of age is only permitted in designated tailgating areas. State
law and University policy prohibit public consumption of alcoholic beverages or possession of open containers of
alcohol in public places.
H. Glass beverage containers are prohibited.
I. General admission tailgating is located in designated parking lot(s). Tailgating is prohibited in any other area.
J. Tailgating is permitted up to three (3) hours before game time and ends when the game begins. Athletics may
designate special groups or activities to be permitted to begin tailgating prior to the general population. Tailgating
ends at the start of the game.
K. Tailgating is permitted for up to one-and-a-half (1½) hours after the game has ended.
L. Tailgating is prohibited during the game and at half-time.
M. Only one vehicle is permitted per parking space. Vehicles that leave the tailgating area will not be permitted to
reenter without repaying.
N. The University reserves the right to restrict vehicles and designate parking spaces for safety reasons.
O. Active sports (e.g. Frisbee or football throwing) are allowed as long as the activity does not endanger anyone
around them. Event staff may determine when active sports are dangerous to those around them or are inhibiting
the event.
Please note: Tents, platforms, and stages are not permitted unless approved and reserved in advance.
*Students please note there will increased sanctions for violations of the policy during Homecoming.
Age Verification Procedure
-The age verification area will be staffed with 7 staff using ID readers to:
-Authenticate guest’s age using 2 forms of ID (1 – state issued picture ID or a passport or military ID & 1 verifying their name). Staff will
carefully review the documents submitted to ensure they belong to the presenter and that they are not a faked ID. Once verified that the
presenter is age 21, another staff member will attach a wrist band.
-2 other ECS staff will be located at the event to expedite the line and to remove those who are deemed to be intoxicated or in the yellow zone
of becoming intoxicated. The yellow zone is where someone has begun to lose the inhabitations (being loud, talking freely out of normal
nature or does not walk and act normally etc.). Persons who are intoxicated or appear to be in the yellow zone will not be permitted to obtain
a wrist band or enter with alcohol.
-Anyone who enters by presenting a fake ID or ID of another will be turned over to the TUPD office that will be stationed in this area at the
entrance to the BG.

Towson duo starts
laundry business
for students
around University
JORDAN RUSSELL
News Editor
Two Towson students had an
idea to create a business to help
students complete a chore both
said not many like to do.
“The idea sparked from a guy in
D.C. who had a business named
Soapy Jones who provided a pick
up, drop off laundry service to
Universities in the area,” sophomore
Tyler Kelly said. “It did so
well, we looked to see if Towson
had any competition in the area.
We didn’t see anyone, so we got
started.”
Kelly and his partner, junior
Mike Cianos, have made their own
business, B’More Clean, with the
intent of assisting students in the
area with their laundry.
Kelly knew some students feelings
about laundry based off of
his own experiences. He said he
disliked doing his own laundry.
“I remember laundry was the
worst thing and students didn’t
like it, so [I thought] they’d definitely
pay to have it done,” Kelly
said.
Cianos wanted to begin the business
last year, but had neither the
time nor money to complete his
objective. That changed this year,
but not without a few concerns.
“I was definitely nervous and
scared at first,” Cianos said. “We
put a fair amount of money into
just putting the name [of our business]
out there. It definitely felt
like we were throwing money away
when we got this started. I took a
pretty big risk.”
Students with loans may find
themselves paying more over a
longer period of time, should they
not make a first payment within a
certain timeframe.
A default rate is the interest
rate charged to a borrower when
regularly scheduled payments are
overdue.
A higher rate is then applied in
addition to the current interest
charges for the debt.
According to the Wall Street
Pit, of the approximately one mil-
Matthew Hazlett/ The Towerlight
Sophomore Tyler Kelly and junior Mike Cianos began B’More Clean to assist students with laundry, a chore they say not many enjoy. In
the future, they hope to expand their business with a storage company that will also cater to students.
Cianos said he estimates they
spent approximately $7,000 to start
the business. All his fears turned
to anticipation when he received a
notification on his phone.
“When we got our first customer,
it was pretty cool that someone was
interested,” he said. “Then more
people started to sign up.”
Some students who’ve used
B’More Clean said they have been
satisfied with the service.
lion student borrowers at for-profit
schools whose first payments
came due in the year starting Oct.
1, 2008, at the peak of the financial
crisis, 15 percent were already
at least 270 days behind in their
payments two years later.
English major and senior Jeff
Unglesbee said loans are nearly
essential for most students in
college.
“Getting a loan was something
that I needed to happen in order
to live around the University and
have food to eat. The cost of
which was above and beyond
what any part-time job could pay
me,” he said.
While Unglesbee’s claim of
necessity may be true for some
college students, the repercussions
could put students in even
worse debt if not carefully considered.
Other students said they see
this as a reflection of past loan
increases.
“There are so many similarities
to what is going on now with
student loans and what went on
with housing loans,” sophomore
electronic media and film major
Richard Morris said.
Department of Education
“They have been good about
picking up my laundry on time and
have gotten it right back into my
hands on time also. The company
also seems quick to reply to any
concerns I might have,” customer
Hannah Byrne said.
Kelly and Cianos do all the
washing themselves. Sometimes
they have their girlfriends help
them out when they get too many
loads, or they go to a local cleaner.
Spokesperson Sara Gast said
default rates for student loans
have risen from 7.0 percent in
2008 to 8.8 percent in 2009, but
the increase isn’t a punishment
for defaulters and a formula decided
the price of the rate increase.
More than 3.6 million borrowers
from 5,900 schools entered
repayment between Oct. 1, 2008,
and Sept. 30, 2009, and more
than 320,000 defaulted, according
to The U.S. Department of
Education.
In a press release, U.S. Secretary
of Education Arne Duncan said
Cianos said the business is running
smoothly, but expects it to become
hectic one day.
“Hopefully as each semester
passes, we’ll keep growing. It’ll
get to a point where things may
become more complicated. It may
come to a point where we won’t be
able to handle it by ourselves,” he
said. “It’s not stressful for us yet as
it [may] be. We’re going to prepare
Several Towson researchers were involved in
a project to create one of the world’s smallest
hearing aids for Oticon Inc., a national hearing
aid manufacturing organization.
Brian Kreisman, an assistant professor for
audiology, speech-language pathology and deaf
studies, had done several studies with Oticon in
the past. In 2006 at the University of Canterbury
in New Zealand, Kreisman connected with
Oticon to negotiate the project and ended up
in Towson.
According to a press release, Oticon President
Peer Lauritsen said hearing aids can’t benefit
anyone if they are in a drawer.
With that in mind, researchers and Kreisman
wanted to create an efficient hearing aid. Thus,
the Intiga hearing aid was planned.
AID: Device well accepted
Christopher Curry/ The Towerlight
All experiments took place in an audio laboratory inside of Van Bokklen.
From page 8
“It can take people seven to 10
years to get their hearing tested when
signs of a hearing problem show,”
Kreisman said. “In the past, it’s been
shown that it takes people at least a
month to adjust to new hearing aids,
but this device came out with the
thought to provide people immediate
benefits.”
The project took place in both
Towson and Germany. Kreisman
headed the Towson branch and formulated
a team to help with the
project.
Audiology Clinic Administrator
Candace Robison assisted with fitting
devices, Assistant Professors
Jennifer Smart and Stephanie Nagle
collected the data, and Doctoral
Research Assistant Courtney Bulter
found people to participate in the
experiments.
The team completed all experiments
in a sound lab, where participants
were asked if they could hear
different levels of audio.
“We’d ask if they could hear several
levels of audio, asking if the
quality improved or if it didn’t. We
also did surveys and questionnaires
to see how they were doing with the
hearing aids,” Kreisman said.
“I’m I’m confident
“[the [the aids] did what
“they’re they’re supposed
to do.
BRIAN KREISMAN
Assistant professor for Audiology, Speech-
Language Pathology and Deaf Studies
Butler said that participants were
excited about the opportunity to be a
part of the experiment and improve
their hearing. All selected participants
had never worn hearing aids
before.
“They were happy for the most
part, and positive,” she said. “They
were interested with how the devices
were going to help them, and there
was a positive outcome. It was a
whole new experience for them.”
Once the experiments were
complete, Kreisman and his team
analyzed the data. He took a trip
to Denmark to speak with Oticon
employees about the results of the
experiments.
“We could conclude that participants
at both sites immediately benefited
from wearing the hearing aid
and were fast to accept them,” he
said. “They liked the way the aids felt
and didn’t feel like it clogged their
ears. I’m confident they did what
they’re supposed to do.”
Many of the hearing aid’s technical
features stood out. The Intiga
has Bluetooth capabilities that can
connect with phones to become a
hands-free headset. Kreisman said
the look of the hearing aid also
helped it do well.
“The aids are the smallest behindthe-ear
aids on the market. I think
part of their acceptance in society
is due to their good looks,” he said.

omecoming Week caters to more than Greeks
Christopher Curry/The Towerlight
Students celebrate with Doc at the Homecoming Pep Rally. This year, Homecoming events will be more inclusive to all students.
MEGAN FLANNERY
Assistant Arts & Life Editor
After a hurricane and an earthquake,
almost anyone who has
planned an event at Towson
University in the last month has
learned that they have to be open
to all kinds of situations, Assistant
Vice President for Student Affairs
for Housing and Residence Life
Jerry Dieringer said.
The same goes for this year’s
Homecoming Committee.
In years past, Homecoming
Week has taken place during
October, leaving plenty of time
for all organizations involved to
prepare.
This year, Homecoming Week
fell in September, long before many
organizations, especially those in
Greek life, were ready for it.
“Starting last spring when we
were trying to plan all of this,
there was a lot of controversy with
Greek life because in the past
we’ve had events such as Yell like
Hell, Chalk the Walk and sandwich
boards, but it takes a lot of time
preparing and planning for these
events,” junior and Homecoming
Committee Chairperson Olivia
Serill said.
“They’re [Greek life] not just
going to throw something out there
and have it not be put together or
not performed well.”
Greek life, which held informal
fall recruitment earlier this
week, was not the only organization
unprepared for Homecoming
Week.
Residence Halls also only held
Building Council elections last
week and weren’t officially inducted
until Tuesday night, Dieringer
said.
Despite last minute preparations,
Serill said that the
Homecoming Committee has
found ways to improve upon last
year’s Homecoming Week by opening
events up to a wider range of
students.
“We couldn’t rely on Greek
life as much this
year, so we tried
to develop ideas for
all organizations
to get involved in
events that didn’t
need as much planning
to do,” Serill
said.
“This way, Greek
life could still participate
and have
their recruitment,
but then other
groups could also get involved.”
One of the newest additions this
year to Homecoming Week was
the first ever Block Party where
there were dance performances,
face painting, food, a cake baking
competition, and more.
According to Homecoming
Committee’s Director of Royalties,
junior Kelsey Rock, the Block
Party was one of the most successful
Homecoming events yet.
It had the perfect blend of organizations,
Greek life and clubs.
“I I don’t want anything
“dominated dominated by one
organization. The
point of college is to
learn and have fun.
MATT LENNO
Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life
“There’s a group of girls who
live on the fourth floor of one of
the towers,” Rock said.
“They made a cake and entered
the competition. So they’re getting
involved, which is great.”
By making events more inclusive
and open to all students, Serill
said she hopes there will be an
increase of Tiger pride on campus
throughout Homecoming week.
“It’s more about everyone coming
together. It’s not just a Greek
or an organization’s event,” Serill
said.
“It’s cool to see
everyone mixing
and experiencing
different things.
So far, it’s been
pretty successful.”
Rock said
that dealing
with the earlier
Homecoming date
has given groups
who were not able
to get involved before an opportunity
get more involved and try
something new.
“One club that sticks out to me
is the Figure Skating Club,” Rock
said.
“They’ve been doing a really
great job and they’ve been participating
in a lot of events. I
always know it’s them because
they made their car a big skate [for
Homecoming Week].”
In order to make competitions
equivalent between larger and
smaller groups, three size categories
have been created for this
year’s Homecoming Week events,
Director of Fraternity and Sorority
Life Matt Lenno said.
“There’s the below 10 people
category, 10 to 75, then 75 and
above,” Lenno said.
“This way, if there’s a small
Greek chapter of eight, they’re not
competing against a giant chapter
of Greeks. They can compete
against a couple guys from a floor
or a smaller student organization.”
Lenno said creating
Homecoming events where more
students can get involved makes
for a better Homecoming overall.
The more people involved, the
more spirit there will be around
campus.
“I don’t want anything dominated
by one organization,” Lenno
said. “The point of college is to
learn and have fun, so if you’re
eliminated from something or
you’re not able to participate, the
fun is eliminated.”
As for the future, Serill said she
hopes to get the residence halls
even more involved.
Getting students from all
aspects of campus life to be able
to join in, whether it’s through
an organization, Greek life, or just
friends, is an ideal goal.
“They can be from an organization,
like URG, SGA, Greek life, or
even just living on campus,” Serill
said. “Finding a way to cater to
everyone is definitely in our goals
for the future.”
Q&A with
Kings and
Queens of
the Jungle
The Towerlight interviewed six of
this years’ nominees for King and
Queen of the Jungle. Two nominees,
Linda Huynh and Sean Walker, were
unavailable.
Katie Billotti
What characteristics should the
Queen of the Jungle have?
I think the Queen of the Jungle
should be someone that is really
involved on campus, knows a lot of
people, and represents the student
body in a good way in our campus
community and in Towson in general.
Why should we vote for you to be
Queen of the Jungle?
I think that you should vote for
me for Homecoming Queen because
I think I’m really approachable and
someone who will serve our Towson
community in a good way and hopefully
have a lot of exciting things
planned for the upcoming semester.
Paulomi Dholakia
What characteristics should the
Queen of the Jungle have?
I think the Queen of the Jungle
should be involved on campus,
should have a lot of school spirit,
should be very invested in her academics,
and be very humble at the
same time.
Why should we vote for you to be
Queen of the Jungle?
I think you should vote for me to
be Queen of the Jungle because I feel
like I represent Towson very well and
embody all of the characteristics that
the Queen of the Jungle should, and
I feel like I’d be able to hold the title
very well.
Simone Posey
What characteristics should the
Queen of the Jungle have?
The characteristics that a Queen
of the Jungle should have are definitely
diversity because that’s one of
the things Towson University defines
itself on. They should also be active
within their community outside of
Towson and within Towson, and
they should also be a very wellrounded
student as well.
Why should we vote for you to be
Queen of the Jungle?
You should vote for me because
I feel I fit all of those categories.
I’m very well involved in Towson
University, not only with the things
Club celebrates, cultivates crops
TU Urban Farm members work together to grow and sell their own vegetables on campus.
SHANNON O’BROCKI
Contributing Writer
The TU Urban Farm, formally
known as the TU Community
Vegetable Garden, cultivates its crops
behind the Administration Building
next to a white shed.
The club started in fall
2009, although the garden
itself was not planted until
the spring of 2010. Pamela
Hargest, a member of the
club, said the mission of
the organization is to raise
awareness about where
food comes from, encourage
healthier eating habits
and promote the idea of
local communities.
According to Hargest,
the group works like a collective.
There are no set
leaders.
“I think this is why
people like to get involved
with our group, because
students really feel like they can
impact the direction of the garden,”
Hargest said.
The members of the club take
turns caring for the garden on a dayto-day
basis. Hargest said that if the
plants need to be watered or something
is wrong, the leading member
Ed Sheeran
“+”
Atlantic
Sometimes mainstream
debuts fall
short of high expectations.
You work
incredibly hard
releasing free material,
maintaining a fan base, and getting critical hype,
then you flop and you flop hard. Ed Sheeran is not
the case, as he brings something refreshing to the
table, minus his unassuming image and bright ginger
hair.
With a dash of folk here, a little hip-hop influence
there, and therapeutic vocals, the United Kingdom
singer/songwriter shows that he can transcend genres
without blurring the lines any more than they need to.
Note the introductory track, “The A Team,” an
excellently composed narrative about a beauty’s
descent into drug use and prostitution only using a
guitar, while “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You” shows
that he has some rhyming skills, declaring, “They
say I’m up and coming like I’m in a fuckin’ elevator”
over a heavy urban instrumental. The album holds
no major theme, mixing in some syrupy sweet breakups
(“U.N.I”), heart-warming and tear-inducing love
songs (“Kiss Me,” “Wake Me Up”), and then giving us
the chef d’oeuvre that is “Lego House.” “+” is one of
those albums that sneaks up on you.
It’s a real, earthy, relatable and emotional. Strong
debuts are hard to come by, but Ed Sheeran did a
damn fine job at it.
for that day cares for the plants
and reports back to the group with
any issues. She said not everyone
receives their own individual day, but
members of the group double up to
care for the farm. Hargest said that
the garden wouldn’t be where it is
today without the help of the club’s
adviser, Ben
Warner.
Warner said
“When When you grow your
“own own food, we’ve
found that you’re
likely to eat it with
more recognition of
the ingenuity and
labor that has gone
into producing it.
he became
the adviser
when he
noticed
how well
the community
gardens
in his own
neighborhood
were
doing.
“I started
thinking
that students
could
do the same
thing on Towson’s campus,” Warner
said. “At that point, I didn’t realize
just how vibrant the culture of urban
agriculture was in Baltimore City.”
This year is the first that the
club will be selling their vegetables
at a Farmer’s Market. In the future
they will be selling their goods at
TU Urban Farm grows items such as squash, basil, cabbage and tomato, which they will be selling at local markets.
an on-campus market or to Dining
Services on campus. Warner also
said that the club makes a terrific
effort to reach out into the community
by donating food and the talents
of its members to places like the
The United Kingdom
was where the fastpaced
distortion and
the heart-racing syncopation
of dubstep was
invented.
More recently in the
American mainstream, there have been instances of dubstep,
like in Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me.”
However, you can’t capture the essence of a genre
unless you know it like the back of your hand. This may
be the reason why Columbia decided to unleash Katy B in
the U.S.: to show that the proclaimed princess of pop can’t
hold a candle to the queen of dubstep.
“On A Mission” won’t be your cup of tea if you mindlessly
fist pump, scream “Shots,” and get chocolate-wasted
on a Thursday night. The songs are a strong mix between
relaxed lounge tracks like “Disappear” and “Hard to Get,”
and groovier upbeat cuts like the edgy “Easy Please Me”
and Caribbean influenced “Lights On.”
Katy relies on her strong, though mostly self-restrained,
vocal ability, which effectively makes her album quite the
listening experience.
Some of the tunes sound like glorified elevator music
at first, but as the album goes on, its grasps your ears in
anticipation.
The deal-maker is how she is able to maneuver throughout
the album without sounding extorted. Like the
album’s title, Katy B makes it a mission to dismiss posers
and shows she’s the real deal. Point made.
- Kristopher Jones
Assistance Center of Towson and the
Ronald McDonald House. Warner
said he believes the TU Urban Farm
has been extremely successful in
demonstrating the amazing amount
of dedication it takes to feed even a
Everyone is
afraid of fat:
afraid of being
fat, looking fat, eating fat, saturated
fat, trans fat, etc.
The list continues, and so has the
array of products marked low-fat or
fat-free.
What I will tell you, however, is
that fat often isn’t the problem.
For example, soda is fat free,
Twizzlers are fat free, and marshmallows
are fat free.
Are these the staples of a healthy
diet?
I think not.
When people gain weight, but
insist that they’ve not been eating
fast food and that they always dab
the grease off their pizza, I turn my
gaze to another culprit of weight
gain: sugar.
It is very easy in this country to
eat a high-sugar diet, even if you
don’t necessarily eat desserts or
sweets and you buy foods that you
think are healthy, even those that
are fat-free.
Of course, there are sugar alterna-
“When you grow your own food,
we’ve found that you’re likely to eat
it with more recognition of the ingenuity
and labor that has gone into
producing it,” Warner said.
Aspartame causes migraines and
(cumulatively) cancer.
Splenda is also chemically
derived, and so is anything else
that’s a zero-calorie sweetener that
is not Stevia (which is a plant and is
pretty yummy in drinks like coffee
and tea).
Our bodies just aren’t designed
to digest and expel these chemicals.
So how do we avoid this?
Even your slice of white bread
spikes your blood sugar as quick
as candy, and your run-of-the-mill
yogurt has as much refined sugar as
a can of soda.
I say, take things into your own
hands.
Research natural sweeteners that
aren’t processed, like honey, which
helps boost immunity to seasonal
allergies; maple syrup, which contains
antioxidants and trace nutrients;
and agave nectar, which is
released into your bloodstream
much the same way as fruit sugar:
slowly and safely.
Beginner’s guide
to a workout plan
Matt Dustin
Columnist
When it
comes to
working out,
I see many people who faithfully
come to the gym, yet have no idea
what to do until they arrive.
People walk in, hop on a treadmill
or elliptical for a while to warm up,
then look around for what machines
look familiar or unoccupied.
While doing this is better than
doing nothing, wandering around
doing random sets on different
machines with no rhyme or reason
probably won’t get you results very
fast and could potentially lead to
problems down the road.
There is no one program that
everyone can follow, since no two
people have the same body.
However, there are a few rules
that should help anyone come up
with a basic workout program to
follow.
Having a plan when you walk into
the gym lets you get in and out fast
and see results, rather than doing
The following are guidelines I
follow with every single program I
write for a client to make sure that
the program is structured and safe
for them to follow.
The most important rule is to
maintain a balance with your training.
Think of movement patterns
here, for example, a chest press
and row.
These are two opposite motions,
horizontal pushing and pulling, and
you need to train them both equally.
Do the math and count the reps
for your whole week’s program.
If you do more pressing than
pulling, eventually your pressing
muscles will get stronger, and your
body won’t be balanced anymore,
which can lead to some serious postural
issues over time.
This applies to all movement patterns
vertical pushing and pulling,
leg extension/curls, etc.
Interested
on-campus
organizations?
thetowerlight.com/apply
Two extremely common imbalances
are back and hamstrings, so
make sure you can row as much as
you can bench and you can leg curl
as much weight as you use on the
leg extension.
Never work the same muscle two
days in a row.
You may want to tighten up your
butt and abs, but coming in every
day and doing countless crunches
and lunges won’t get you very far.
You could do a full body workout
every other day, or alternate upper
and lower body days, or tons of
other combinations.
Just make sure you get at least
a day between working the same
muscle.
Another thing to consider walking
on a treadmill for 10 minutes
isn’t a warm-up for a workout,
unless your workout is more walking
or jogging.
Say it’s your bench-press day, and
you just jogged for a few minutes to
warm up.
This may elevate your heart rate,
but does nothing to get your chest,
shoulder and triceps muscles firing
and ready for the bench.
A better option would have been
to do some pushups, light bench
pressing, and shoulder mobility
work to get the muscles you are
actually using fired up and ready
to work.
This applies to all exercises.
You need to prepare the muscle
often as they’d like, the Department
of Electronic Media and Film has
started its Fall Film Festival: a
12-week series of free movies on
Monday nights.
This year’s theme: food.
“There are films that deal directly
with food, but we’re also doing
things like zombies, documentaries
about tea, a film about the ritual
of dining,” EMF Department Chair
Greg Faller said. “It’s fairly open to
interpretation.”
Associate professor of EMF Brian
Plow selected the 12 films based
on suggestions from Towson faculty
and staff.
He also chose the overarching
theme.
“Part of the privilege of being in
charge of the series is that I get to
choose the theme for this year,” he
said. “I knew just thinking about it
there are a number of films that deal
with food, eating and how it links to
culture. So it contained a number
of issues within that big theme that
people would be interested in.”
The films are of professional caliber
made by well-known directors
and range from anything from art
films around the world or Hollywood
blockbusters, according to Faller.
The films Plow selected are based
on a combination of ideas he comes
up with and from the faculty.
“I ask the faculty who are going
to be guest presenters to suggest a
title they may want to present,” Plow
said. “I give them a long list of possible
films that would be fun. I rely
on the guest faculty to give me some
ideas as well as direct them to certain
choices if they’re unsure.”
The faculty members who host
the films are an interdisciplinary
group, ranging from representatives
from the departments of health sciences,
elementary education, mass
communication and communication
studies, EMF and Asian studies.
“These films are matched with
faculty that study the subject matter,
so for the most part we not only see
the films, but understand the story
behind them,” Plow said.
The 22nd year of the screenings
will take place in the Van Bokkelen
Hall Auditorium, which features
high definition, surround sound and
assisted listening improvements.
Facebook’s facelift
ALISSA KATZ
Senior Editor
Facebook released two new big features to its website. The new layout’s
most obvious feature is the News Ticker, which, similar to a Twitter feed,
repeatedly refreshes with a stream of updates from friends in terms of wall
posts, statuses, comments, you name it.
Students said they think it’s confusing, but there are aspects that work.
“I don’t like the sidebar,” sophomore mass communication major Dana
Kobilinsky said. “It has stuff on it that I don’t really care about. But I like
how everyone’s status pops up on the news feed.”
Graduate student Trevor Lowing said he thinks the new layout is very
confusing.
“This must be what people felt like when CD players came out,” he said.
Sophomore psychology major Tara Battersby said she’s not interested in
finding out that much about her Facebook friends.
“I understand that Facebook needs to keep up with the other social
networking competitors, but I think the new ticker on the right side of
the homepage is unnecessary,” she said. “To be honest, I don’t care to
be informed about who ‘likes’ what status or photo. The whole layout in
general is just overall confusing, and if they don’t want to become the new
MySpace, they should change it ASAP.”
Andrew: OK, so I was a modest
2-3 last week, but I accurately predicted
the Patriots/Chargers game
with the correct final score. This
week, I’ve got Danny Kiddoo, the
only other member of my staff that
hails from the great state of New
Jersey. It’s time for a perfect week,
and it couldn’t come against a better
opponent.
Danny: I’m not going to lie, ever
since I first read The Towerlight,
I’ve always wanted to contribute to
this piece. So here we go. Football
fans could not have been treated to a
better first two weeks of the season,
and week three looks like it’s going to
continue the trend.
Packers -3.5 @ Bears
Andrew: I’m 1-1 in picking my
Packers to defeat their first two opponents
and the spread at the same
time. But the Cheeseheads are racking
up points like they’re poised
for another championship run. I’m
a little concerned about the pass
defense, especially now that Super
Bowl hero Nick Collins is out for the
season. The pass rush hasn’t been
superb by any means. And honestly,
I haven’t been impressed with the
running game one bit.
But the champs are 2-0, and Aaron
Rodgers is Aaron Rodgers. He played
three really good games against the
Bears last year, including the NFC
Championship Game in January.
Chicago won the regular season game
in the Windy City last season, but
it’s a new year and the Packers are
primed for a 3-0 start.
Packers 27, Bears 20
Danny: The Packers have won
the hearts of most football fans
because of their gunslinging offense
led by Super Bowl MVP, and Ryan
from “The Office” look-alike, Aaron
Rodgers. However, most people overlook
their elite pass defense, led by
former heisman winner CB Charles
Woodson.
Although they gave up 400-plus
yards in the air to rookie phenom
Cam Newton, they still managed to
pick him off three times. Jay Cutler
is in for a long day. It’ll be a good
game because of the teams’ legendary
rivalry, but look for Andrew sporting
his green and yellow on Monday for
his boys.
Packers 30, Bears 20
Ravens -4.5 @ Rams
Andrew: The Ravens looked horrid
in Tennessee last week, losing a
lot of the momentum they gained
in their opening week blowout of
Pittsburgh. Joe Flacco looked like
the Joe Flacco I’ve come to know,
tossing interceptions and running for
his life behind the line of scrimmage.
The Rams, on the other hand, didn’t
impress me one bit on Monday Night
Football, settling for field goals on
WITH ANDREW CONSTANT
three occasions from inside the red
zone. Sam Bradford is a stud QB and
should be for many, many years, but
his options in the passing game really
worry me. If Steven Jackson doesn’t
play again, the Ravens could make
this one a laugher.
Ravens 28, Rams 17
Danny: Hey, remember that time
the Ravens crushed the Steelers
and got the hopes up for the entire
area? Remember when they didn’t
show up the next week and let Matt
Hasselbeck and Kenny Britt look like
Joe Montana and Jerry Rice? Yeah,
me too. I haven’t been able to look
at anything purple without getting
sick since.
The good news is they are playing
the Rams, who are coming off of a
short week after getting trounced
Monday by a mediocre Giants team.
Although Sam Bradford had a career
game in the loss, I don’t see him
having a great game against an angry
Ravens defense.
Ravens 27, Rams 13
Patriots -9 @ Bills
Andrew: Let’s get something out
of the way: I have a serious man
crush on Tom Brady. I never had him
on one of my fantasy football teams
until last year, when he was the MVP.
I chose him again this season and
he’s been nothing short of incredible
through two weeks. It’s one of those
things that never gets old: rooting for
arguably the best quarterback every
week to throw for massive amounts
of yards and touchdowns.
The Bills have been one of the
most surprising teams this year, scoring
points in bundles with quarterback
Ryan Fitzpatrick leading the
way. But this is their gut-check week,
and we’ll find out if they’re actually
for real. I think they’re going to stick
around this season, but the Patriots
are going to stomp around in Orchard
Park.
Patriots 35, Bills 24
Danny: The Bills have easily been
the darlings of the first two games of
the season. With a spirited comeback
against the Raiders last week, the
team really showed off their offensive
explosiveness, despite having no real
players of name. It’s so lovable.
That’s why they are going to be
manhandled by the Patriots Sunday.
Tom Brady has often be criticized for
being soft and a pretty boy, but this
guy has just put up the most yards
in a two-game span in NFL history.
Bill Belichick loves squashing teams,
especially upstart division rivals. This
one’s going to be ugly.
Patriots 42, Bills 16
Bucs -1.5 vs. Falcons
Andrew: This is an interesting tilt
in the NFC South. Tampa Bay could
easily be 2-0, and they could very well
be 0-2. Atlanta looked awful against
the Bears and managed to escape
against Philadelphia, in part because
of Mike Kafka leading an Eagles
comeback attempt. But the team that
goes down in Western Florida this
week is going to be down in the cellar
with the Panthers.
I like Matt Ryan and the Falcons
offense, but I think the Buccaneers
are due for a breakout week. Josh
Freeman hasn’t looked good in his
first two games, and the Bucs have
seemingly forgotten about LeGarrette
Blount and Mike Williams (both of
whom are on my fantasy team, but
I’m not bitter or anything).
Tampa, let’s get it together and
have one of those big weeks where
everything works at once.
Buccaneers 27, Falcons 24
Danny: Man, how awkward was it
when there were more people rooting
for the Eagles and Mike Vick than
the Falcons in Atlanta Sunday night?
Even though the home-field advantage
didn’t seem that strong in the
stands, the Falcons still pulled out
a huge win at home in prime time,
which actually shouldn’t come as a
surprise. Matt Ryan has only lost two
regular season games at the Georgia
Dome since being drafted back in
2008.
The fact that Atlanta is a 1.5 point
underdog is astonishing. The Bucs
have stumbled out of the gate, and
a home win against a division rival
would be huge. But I don’t see that
happening.
Falcons 28, Buccaneers 17
Cowboys -5.5 vs. Redskins
Andrew: Are the Cowboys that
much better than the Redskins?
Is Tony Romo going to be healthy
enough to take all the snaps in this
game? Are the Redskins due for a
letdown from Sexy Rexy Grossman
after two relatively solid weeks? I
don’t know the answer to any of
these questions, and I don’t think
I’ll be finding out the answers until
next Tuesday morning. Unless, of
course, I get home and the game is on
and the remote control has suddenly
vanished.
Cowboys 23, Redskins 17
Danny: You gotta love the National
Football League. A league where two
constantly overrated teams with delusional
fan bases get to meet in prime
time, and hog up all the hype for the
week’s games.
The Redskins’ nice start has done
just enough to get the fans’ hopes
so high that it will be hilarious to
see how hard they fall when they
finish 7-9.
Also, Tony Romo just led the ‘Boys
in a come-from-behind to victory with
a punctured lung. He’s going to want
to shut up the naysayers from week
one for good with a big win in the
home opener.
Cowboys 34, Redskins 14
Kay
Tigers break through for first victory
JESSE JONES
Contributing Writer
The struggling Tigers got their
first win of the season Wednesday
night in the last game before the
start of Colonial Athletic Association
play.
After scoring just two goals in
their first four games of the season,
Towson took a 4-1 victory against
Albany at the Tiger Soccer Complex
and picked up some much needed
momentum for its conference opener
at James Madison Saturday night.
Sophomore forward Kay Banjo
scored twice and recorded an assist
by Phil
Martinelli.
Sophomore Cameron Kidwell got the
fourth and final tally with his first
career goal. Pomare Te Anau scored
for Albany off of an assist from
Christoffer Nisser.
“We finished chances today, and
goals change games and bring a little
bit of confidence,” Head Coach
Frank Olszewski said. “There were
some real spirited efforts there.”
Coming into the game, the Tigers
had a record of 0-3-1, with the one tie
coming at home earlier in the month
to Mount St. Mary’s.
The Great Danes (4-3-0), who had
lost their first two games, were on
fire and winners of their previous
four matches, and looked to keep the
streak going.
Banjo, who is a pre-season all-CAA
selection, quickly made sure this
would not happen. Banjo scored in
the fifth minute of the game off a
cross pass from the left by forward
Matteo Vertucci to put the Tigers up
1-0. In the 22nd minute, Banjo put
another one in the net thanks to an
assist from forward Enrico Skryzpak.
Despite the early offensive pressure
by Towson, Albany midfielder
Te Anau cut the lead in half in the
23rd minute of the match.
back, it was because we chose not to
make it a touchback or they chose
not to make it a touchback.”
Some players, however, are still
returning kicks despite catching
the ball at the back of the end
zone. Percy Harvin of the Minnesota
Vikings and Ted Ginn Jr. of the
San Francisco 49ers both returned
kickoffs for touchdowns in the opening
weekend. The Chicago Tribune
asked Bears’ receiver and one of the
best return men in the league, Devin
Hester, about the new rule and players
still running back kickoffs.
“It’s just showing the NFL that
moving the line up five yards didn’t
budge things a bit,” Hester said.
“They got a couple touchbacks, but
you’ve still got guys bringing it out,
and at the end of the day, that rule
is pointless. It’s not going to prevent
Matthew Hazlett/ The Towerlight
Kay Banjo scored his first two goals of the season in Towson’s 4-1 victory over Albany on Tuesday. Banjo, a Pre-Season All-CAA pick, had
not scored since last season’s game against Maryland. With the win, the Tigers snapped a four-game pointless streak.
In the 28th minute, midfielder
Martinelli scored off a cross to the
middle from Banjo to give the sophomore
two goals along with his team-
leading two assists on the season.
The end of the half got physical,
as midfielder Quinn Meehan collided
with David Hawksworth of Albany
and received a yellow card.
concussions because guys are bringing
it out five to eight yards deep in
the end zone. We’re still coming out
with it. And that’s taking away from
some of the fun in the NFL because
guys are going to bring it out regardless.”
Players can return the ball all they
want, but it can potentially hurt their
team by getting stopped around the
15-yard line.
Not only has the rule had an affect
on the game, it has made a huge
impact on which players made NFL
rosters. Many coaches were unsure if
kickoffs would be as critical as they
once were, which impacted which
positions were more vital than others.
BaltimoreRavens.com discussed
this issue with Harbaugh in preseason.
“You can tell only so much in practice,
like will a guy really go out and
Towson opened the second half
strong. The Tigers were called offside
in the opening minutes of the half,
but the call was quickly followed by
a goal from Kidwell. Kidwell forced
Albany into a turnover, and with the
goal, increased Towson’s lead to 4-1.
Kidwell also made a fantastic diving
save later in the game to prevent the
make a tackle?” Harbaugh said. “A
lot of times, early in the preseason, a
guy will miss a couple, and then he’ll
start making them. You can see the
progress. We just haven’t had enough
reps in the kickoff team to see it.”
With a huge increase in touchbacks
and with the new rule giving
players fewer chances to make an
NFL roster, it’s safe to say this rule
has been more of a negative than a
positive.
Great Danes from scoring. Goalie
John Steele was injured after a collision
in the 44th minute and backup
keeper Nathan Moran filled in admirably.
Banjo, who got his first goals of
the season, was very relieved.
“It’s been a while since I got one
in the back of the net. Last time I
scored was against Maryland,” Banjo
The season is
starting out hard,
and Atkinson
doesn’t think it’ll
get any easier.
“We have no
more easy matches
this year. Every
match is going to
be a battle. Even
that last-place
team in conference
is going to
be a tough team,”
he said. “The way
this conference is
situated, whoever is last could beat
whoever is first on any given night.
We cannot lower our level of play
at any time. If we drop our guard,
said. “It’s coming all together now.
As you can see we scored four goals
today. It’s getting better, we’re getting
better.”
The Tigers will travel to James
Madison University to play the Dukes
Saturday. Their next home game will
be Oct. 1 against William & Mary at
“It’s not like they’re going to
little more. If [Eachus] plays, they’ll
run the ball more. I think they’re
extremely well coached, extremely
physical, and we got our hands full.”
Offensively, the Tigers will be facing
a Colgate defense that struggles
to put pressure on the ball and
produce turnovers. The Raiders give
up an average of 383 yards per game,
with 219 of those yards being gained
on the ground.
Colgate’s defense has yet to record
a sack this season and has only
forced three turnovers thus far.
“I have no doubt that Colgate will
be ready to play when they come
here,” Ambrose said.
it will be the first time since 2006
that the Tigers have opened a season
with three straight wins.
Rivera’s record
deserves praise
Sam Smith
Associate Sports Editor
Say what
you want about
saves as a statistic.
Some argue
that saves are
the most overrated
stat in
all of baseball.
Just because
the closer
comes in for only one inning and
records three outs, does that mean
he deserves to have all the glory and
his name at the bottom of a box
score right next to of the winning
pitcher?
Ask legend Mariano Rivera, who
saved his record-setting 602nd game
against the Twins Monday night.
The ninth inning is always the
toughest inning to pitch.
Given that it is usually the last
inning of the ball game, the opposing
lineup knows that the ninth is
now-or-never time to get rallies going
and prevent the loss and possibly
steal a win.
A good closer is the insurance that
the lead will be saved and the game
won’t be lost in the final pitches.
The difference between recording
the last three outs of a ball game
is that it requires a certain type of
confident mindset that is only found
in the toughest of the tough.
I have seen outstanding set-up
men become closers and have not
even come close to hitting a broad
side of a barn (Mike Gonzalez).
Hearts start to beat a lot faster
when the tying and go-ahead runs
are in scoring position with no outs.
However, the good closers keep their
Colgate ‘s team stats
Points Per Game - 21.3
Points Allowed Per Game - 36.0
Rushing Yards Per Game - 219.3
Passing Yards Per Game - 178.3
cool and work their way through the
jam and pick up the save anyway.
That is exactly what Rivera has been
able to do all throughout his career.
Although closers might not have
the same value as a quality starting
pitcher, they are still a vital part of a
team’s success.
Good closers are hard to come by,
great closers are rare, and the best
closers are usually some of the most
valued players in the league.
Some will try to discredit what
guys like Rivera and Trevor Hoffman
have done just because of the fact
that the role of the closer is different
from what it used to be. Rivera and
Hoffman, who are the epitome of
the modern closer and are the top
two on the all-time saves list, pitched
roughly 50-60 innings per season.
Take a guy like Lee Smith, who is
third on the all-time list and pitched
anywhere from around 80-100
innings a season.
Back in the early ages of the save,
pitchers would have to pitch about
three innings to secure the win.
However, the game has evolved
and times have changed, and for
those old traditionalists, you got to
give credit where credit is due.
Forty-one-year-old Rivera has been
arguably the most consistent player
of the last 15 seasons. He has never
blown more than 10 saves in a season.
Given that he has pitched in
many, many high pressure games,
that means a lot.
He has also won 75 games in his
career.
Despite miscues, Tigers sweep Howard
ALENA SCHWARZ
Staff Writer
After an error-filled first set, Towson was finally able to pull out a 3-0 win against
the Howard Bison.
The Tigers (13-4) had a rough start, despite a match-high 23 kills.
Howard only had 10 kills, but the Bison benefited from Towson’s seven service
errors and seven attack errors.
“I think our timing just wasn’t quite there,” Head Coach Bruce Atkinson said. “We
made a lot of hitting errors that we shouldn’t have made, and our serve was horrendous.”
That first set was proven to be a fluke, since Towson came back strong and took the
match. In her first home game after being out with an injury,
TOWSON 3
Alysha McCreary had five total service aces, nine kills and an
HOWARD 0
attack percentage of .316.
“I feel like after this game I have confidence,” McCreary said.
“I’m playing my game now and I’m going to do whatever it takes to help my team-
mates win conference.”
Arinis Fernandez made her season debut, and while she wasn’t heavily active on
the score-sheet, Atkinson said it was important for her to get some game experience
before conference play.
“Stacey [Niehoff] was out sick tonight. We’re anticipating that she’ll be back for
Friday. But [Fernandez has] been working hard in practice, and we need everyone to
be able to get playing time because you never know when someone might be called
upon,” Atkinson said.
Karolina Sawaniewicz had one of her strongest games of the season. A natural
middle blocker, she played on the outside and really brought up her offensive edge.
She tied with McCreary for a team-high nine kills, only had one error, and hit a strong
.727 attack percentage.
“She had been playing outside for us. She’s naturally a middle, and we decided to
move things around a little bit just in case we need to do it later on. I think she didn’t
get the blocks we would have wanted, but offensively she did the job for us,” Atkinson
said. “Hopefully that’ll give her some confidence moving forward, also.”
Friday, Towson will open up conference play against defending CAA Champion
Delaware before moving on to play Hofstra and runner-up Northeastern.
Towson has the top-ranked offense and defense in the
Colonial Athletic Association and sits atop the most competitive
FCS conference in the nation
with a perfect 2-0 record through the
first three weeks of action.
The Tigers are coming off a bye
week and are now preparing for the
long haul.
Nine games remain on the schedule
for Head Coach Rob Ambrose
and his team, and there is no doubt
in Ambrose’s mind that the coming
weeks will be a grind.
“We know full well that it’s a marathon,
but it’s also a marathon that’s a
sprint,” Ambrose said. “The number
one thing is that our kids now actively
participate in their own health, nutrition
and well-being. They know this
is a war that tears apart your body, so
now they spend time actively pursuing
rest. When they’re not in class, they’re
in the training room, they’re eating, they’re lifting, they’re
studying. We’re not spending a lot of time doing a bunch
New NFL kickoff rules
hurting the game
Jesse Jones
Contrubuting Writer
“And this
one will sail
out of the end
zone.” These are the words said by
many NFL broadcasters on kickoffs.
This offseason, NFL Commissioner
Roger Goodell implemented a new
rule on kickoffs to prevent injury.
The rule, which moved the kickoff
from the 30-yard line up to the
35-yard line, has drawn a large
amount of criticism from players,
coaches and fans. I am one of those
fans who is not in favor of the new
rule change.
The rule takes away one of the
most exciting plays in the game.
There is nothing like watching somebody
run 100 yards for a touchdown.
With the new rule, there is no anticipation
as to whether a player will
break out for a huge return, but
instead we wait to see if the kicker
will boot the ball through the field
goal post.
The effect of this was seen immediately.
ESPN.com reported that in
week one of the 2011 NFL season, 49
percent of kickoffs were touchbacks,
a 31 percent increase from the number
of touchbacks there were in week
one of last year’s season.
The Detroit Free Press quoted
Detroit Lions wide receiver Rashied
Davis as saying, “I’m just going to tell
you the truth. I hate it.”
When asked about the new kickoff
rule, Baltimore Ravens Head Coach
John Harbaugh was not too excited.
“If you look at the Eagles-Ravens
preseason game, it was just a yawner,”
Harbaugh said. “Every one was
