Construction of
library addition
to begin in 2013
Warren - “Godel
Memorial Library is
bursting at the seams.
The building, constructed
in 1975 and owned by
the city of Warren, has
served the area well for
many years.
“Since that time, computers
and additional
shelving for books, audio
books and movies have
been added to the
library. The number of
programs provided by
the library has also
expanded greatly. Book
deliveries are made to
daycare centers in
Warren and Argyle as
well as to senior centers
in Warren, Stephen and
Oslo.
“After studying the
situation, the Godel
Memorial Library Board
and the Warren City
Council have decided
that adding onto the
existing library and
remodeling its interior
will make it a better
place for anyone using
the library.
“The 1,600 square
feet of new space will
include additional shelving
for books and other
library materials; space
for small group meetings;
tables and chairs
for working, studying
and reading; and comfortable
seating by a
new fireplace. The current
space will be
remodeled and
rearranged to provide
six computer stations,
new library furniture
and handicapped-accessible
restrooms.
“The total cost of this
project is estimated to
be $226,000. This estimated
cost doesn’t
include window treatments,
audiovisual
equipment or any other
equipment or items
needed to finish the
project.
So far, $191,000 in
grants and donations
have been raised. The
library board wants to
raise an additional
$43,000. - Warren Sheaf,
Erskine - “Win-E-
Mac fifth graders
recently learned a little
about food sales and
pricing differences
between generic and
brand name products
along with a lot about
helping the less fortunate
during this
Christmas season.”
“Instead of the usual
gift exchange, they
donated money toward a
shopping spree for the
Grace Lutheran Food
Shelf.
“Fifth grade teachers
Augusta Maruska and
Ian Hanson said their
students were able to
buy about $106 worth of
groceries.” - The Erskine
announced her retirement.
Waterworth spent 39 years
with Pennington County
27 years as the agency’s
financial assistance supervisor.
Ken Yutrzenka, director
of human services, was confident
in the collective ability
of the agency’s financial
assistance and social service
employees to function without
supervisors during the
hiring process, but he admitted
that there were some
concerns.
“They are integral parts,”
Yutrzenka said. “The units
certainly have the expertise
in assistance or social service,
but those were big shoes
to fill.”
Julie Sjostrand
Originally from
Ellendale, N.D., Sjostrand
moved to Lancaster in 1989.
She worked in Roseau as a
school social worker for 22
years. From 1990-98, her
position was shared in a coop
with Greenbush, Badger,
Middle River and Roseau
schools. Starting in the fall
of 1998, she spent all of her
time in the Roseau School
District. Sjostrand also
spent 14 summers working
In November 2011,
The festive atmosphere of the Evergreen Eating Emporium in Thief River Falls made the
community Christmas Eve Dinner even more special. Hundreds of area residents took
advantage of the event. Lisa Robson, owner of the Evergreen, said she had an overwhelming
response from businesses wanting to donate food and local citizens who wanted to
volunteer their time. “The kindness in our community is overwhelming,” said Robson.
Train delay causes headaches for motorists
Many motorists were
delayed by a train
Wednesday afternoon in the
city of Thief River Falls.
Some motorists waited as
long as an hour since all of
the railroad crossings were
blocked in the city.
“We were taking a lot of
phone calls and making a lot
of phone calls at the same
time to try to figure it out,”
(Continued on Page 9)
said Police Chief Kim
Murphy.
Murphy eventually
reached a rail official in the
Twin Cities, who informed
him that the railcars had to
be switched. They apparently
weren’t in the correct
order according to transportation
guidelines.
Murphy said the majority
of city railroad crossings
were blocked while the railcars
were being switched.
He noted one caller reported
that she was able to drive
about three blocks at one
time but then had to wait for
the train again.
Murphy said he was told
rail officials would look into
the incident to ensure no
federal or state transportation
laws were violated.
Creating music
Orchestra and Band combine for performance
The fall recognition assembly, held Friday, Dec. 21 at Lincoln High School in Thief
River Falls, provided a rare opportunity for the LHS Concert Band and Orchestra to
perform together. The combined ensemble was directed by Katie Hahn.
Coming together
Minnesota state statute
indicates that rail companies
aren’t permitted to
block railroad crossings “by
a standing car, train, engine
or other railroad equipment,
or by a switching movement
which continuously blocks a
crossing for longer than 10
minutes.” The statute further
noted that rail companies
violating that particular
section of the statute are
guilty of petty misdemeanors
and subsequent
violations are misdemeanors.
A representative of the
Minnesota Department of
Transportation Rail Office
said that she was unable to
reach CP Rail officials to discover
what caused the delay
at the crossings.
Free tuition offered
for NCTC program
One of the first things
that come to mind when students
and parents think
about a college education is
student debt. Even an
affordable school is still very
expensive and a major
investment. Imagine the
possibility of getting a free
college education in a program
that is the first of its
kind in America.
Northland Community
and Technical College is
pleased to announce the
addition of just that. The
brand new Imagery Analysis
program will be starting in
January 2013.
The IA program is the
first program of its kind in
America and will be located
at Northland’s Thief River
Falls campus. The program
is funded through a
Department of Labor grant
and this means free tuition.*
(Not including NSCI 1103.)
“The Imagery Analysis
program will prepare students
to enter an emerging
field. Because Northland’s
students will be among the
America’s greatest leader of
all time.
In conjunction with
Recipes are from an old
cookbook I found. After all
the rich holiday food, it will
be nice to have something
normal.
All of these recipes are
from 1914, so they are nice,
plain dishes like our greatgrandmothers
used to make.
You’ll love cooking and baking
like they did.
–––––––––––––––––––––––
Let’s try true old-fashioned
pancakes this
Sunday morning:
GRIDDLE CAKES
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 3/4 cups sour milk or buttermilk
1 teaspoon soda (level)
1 tablespoon melted butter
1 tablespoon sugar
Sift flour, salt and soda
together. Add milk slowly
and beat until smooth. Then
add melted butter and fry on
a slightly greased hot griddle.
If desired, a well-beaten
egg may be added at the
last, when it will be necessary
to use a little more
flour. These cakes will be
more tender without the
egg. These cakes may be
made with sweet milk, substituting
four level teaspoons
of baking powder for
the soda. This quantity will
serve 4 or 5 people.
–––––––––––––––––––––––
I love to make old-fashioned
angel food cake –
those box mixes can’t
hold a candle to your
own freshly made cake:
ANGEL FOOD CAKE
1 cup egg whites, unbeaten
1 1/4 cups sugar
Pinch of salt
1 cup sifted flour
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoonful almond flavoring
Put a pinch of salt into
your egg whites and beat
until frothy. Put in the
cream of tartar and finish
beating. Then beat in sugar.
Add flavoring and fold in
the flour lightly. Bake in an
ungreased pan with a tube
in a moderate oven (350
degrees) for half an hour.
(Sift flour once and the flour
4 or 5 times and have eggs
very cold.)
–––––––––––––––––––––––
Now make one of these
really homemade ome -
lettes – so easy and so
tasty:
OMELETTE
Omelettes are of two
classes: the French and the
puffy. There are many variations,
but all belong to one of
the two classes.
The number of yolks
should exceed the number of
whites in an omelet. If this
rule is observed, they will be
more tender and of a looser
texture.
PLAIN OMELETTE
3 eggs
1/2 teaspoonful salt
Dash of pepper
2 tablespoonfuls clear bacon
fat or 1 tablespoon butter
3 tablespoons hot water
Beat eggs very light. Add
salt, pepper and hot water.
Heat the omelet pan and
add bacon fat or butter.
Cook slowly.
When thickened and
browned underneath, put in
grate of oven to finish the
top. When the top will not
adhere to the finger, the
omelet is done. Fold and
serve on hot platter. Recipe
SOUPÇON
You can use canned
pineapple in this, but it is
so much fun to make it
like Grandma did.
Canned fruits can’t hold
a candle to fresh:
AMBROSIA SALAD
1 pineapple
1 pint strawberries
4 bananas
1 cup sherry wine
1 quart grated coconut
6 oranges
Sugar
Reserve a few whole
strawberries and thin slices
of orange.
Peel and slice the pineapple
and cut the slices into
thin strips.
Hull the berries and cut
in halves. Peel the oranges
and divide into their natural
divisions. Cut these in
halves. Sprinkle all ingredients
with sugar and put on
ice
Ẇhen ready to serve,
sprinkle the bottom of a
deep salad bowl with the
grated coconut, then put in
pineapple and more coconut.
After that, add strawberries,
oranges and bananas,
putting a layer of coconut
between each two layers of
fruit with a layer of coconut
on top.
Pour sherry over fruit,
combined with the juices
drained from the fruits.
Garnish with whole strawberries
and thin slices of
orange. Serve very cold in
punch cups. Serves 10 persons.
–––––––––––––––––––––––
And one more really
old-fashioned recipe like
Grandma made. You can
bet it tastes nothing like
what you buy in a plastic
tub at the store. The
boiled potatoes, sliced
hot, make such a difference.
My friend, Bunny,
used to make potato
salad like this – she made
the best:
POTATO SALAD
6 boiled potatoes, sliced
while hot and allowed to
cool
1 small onion, minced fine
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons minced celery
1 tablespoon minced parsley
Boiled Dressing (below)
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Hard boiled eggs
When ready to serve, line
the salad bowl with lettuce,
put in a layer of the potatoes
and sprinkle with the
chopped onion, celery and
parsley. Alternate in this
manner until all the materials
are used and then put a
nice layer of dressing on top
(however much you like).
CHIP offers Cassandra
Stein a new lease on life
Submitted
“It was like fire in my
veins.” Those were the startling
words spoken by 44-
year-old Cassandra Stein as
she described her most troubling
health problem.
“For the last two to three
years, it felt as if the veins in
my legs and arms were constantly
on fire,” said Stein.
The burning pain Cassie
felt was a side effect of the
prescription drug she was
taking for high cholesterol.
“My doctor could see that my
body wasn’t tolerating the
medication well and recommended
I stop taking it. The
pain subsided once the pills
were discontinued, but I
knew I had to do something
to combat my high cholesterol.
I chose CHIP, the
Complete
Health
Improvement Program.”
In September, Stein
signed up for CHIP, a community-based
lifestyle
enrichment program
designed to reduce disease
risk factors through the
adoption of better health
habits and lifestyle modifications.
Cassie admits that she
was ‘hooked’ the very first
day of the program. “The
way the schedule was set up,
with a health screen in the
morning, followed by breakfast,
class and lunch … it all
helped me get off to a good
start. By the end of class
that day, I felt like I was
already halfway there!”
A good start is one thing,
but after Cassie completed
the 16-session program,
what was her overall
impression of the CHIP
experience? Without hesitation
she answers, “Eye opening.”
Hearing how certain
things can affect the body
made it easier for me to
understand the lifestyle and
follow it,” she said.
And follow it she did.
Among other things, Cassie
learned how to improve her
dietary choices and make
exercise part of her daily
routine. “I actually felt it
was easy to make changes
because of the way we (participants)
were guided and
supported all the way
through.”
Four weeks after starting
CHIP, Cassie received her
end-of-program results: Her
total cholesterol had
dropped 19 percent, her
LDL had plunged 25 percent,
her ratio (risk factor)
had plummeted 25 percent,
and she had lost 13 pounds.
Her once-high cholesterol
levels were now nestled
safely in the ideal range, all
without medication. “I had
set a goal to start taking
care of myself,” she beams,
“and these results helped
confirm that I was making
progress!”
It has been over two
months since Cassie completed
the CHIP class, and
she is still moving forward
on the program. “I have now
lost a total of 22.5 pounds,”
she recently wrote in an
email to friends. “I have
never lost more than five or
10 pounds at any time … .
When the first official
weight loss after 30 days
was 13 pounds, I was excited
and happy. But sustainable
loss - over 10 pounds - is not
usually possible for me. I
now weigh less than I did
when I started working at
Digi-Key almost six years
ago. Now that is a feat! I
don’t want to jinx it, but it is
working! It is really working!”
Her email continues,
“Now, do you want to hear
about the proverbial icing on
the cake? Based on the body
measurements I took in
January 2012, I have managed
to lose a total of 12
inches! Yes, that is right--
almost five inches in my
waist alone! Rock on, right?
I am so happy – excited and
shocked! 2.5 more pounds to
goal number 1 and then we
will move on to goal number
2, another 25.”
Cassie has more to say
about the changes she has
noticed, and this time she
uses a word picture. “As the
weight comes off, I feel it is
pulling years off with it.”
She pauses to savor that
thought before continuing.
“I am feeling younger. It is
easier to move around, and I
don’t have headaches anymore.
I used to wake up with
a headache that would last
for days. I would go to work
and just fight through it. At
home I had to stay quiet in a
darkened room; it’s pretty
hard to be a mom under
those conditions. I used to
pop Tylenol like candy, but I
haven’t needed any now for
three months. I am glad to
report that I have not had a
single headache since starting
the program!”
The enthusiastic pitch in
Cassie’s voice gradually mellows
as she describes her
hopes to pass along better
health habits to her 10-yearold
son. “I think it is a good
idea for young people to get
into CHIP. I wish I would
have known about the program
earlier and done it
sooner. It could have spared
me a lot of struggles.”
Cassie’s story is not
entirely unique. In every
CHIP class, there are individuals
who are grateful to
experience the benefits of
adopting a healthy lifestyle
all the while wishing they
would have known about the
program sooner. And, like
Cassie, some individuals
have set goals to start taking
care of their health, even
making New Year’s resolutions
to that effect. CHIP
class in January 2013 will
offer information, support
and fresh opportunities to
help make those New Year
resolutions come about.
The #1 Show In Northwest Minnesota

Sat., Dec. 29, 2012 NORTHERN WATCH Page 5
A Perfect World
It seems that the start of
each new year begins with a
drop-shipment of brand new
problems. This year is no different.
I think many people
will see these problems as
humanity’s imperfections
that must be solved. They
want to live in a perfect
world.
First off, every time I
hear someone say “we must
solve this problem so that it
never happens again,” I
know they are doomed. I
rarely see the kind of problem-solving
perfection that
would make a problem never
happen again. The world is
full of problems; the only
answer I've ever seen is diligence.
In other words you
simply have to put in the
work, day in and day out, to
try prevent the problem.
Unfortunately, people don't
like to work. They like to
make laws that seek perfection
and then pass the whole
impossible mess on for others
to enact and fund.
The second obstacle to
solving a problem is that it is
typically a previous human
action that caused the current
problem. Those who
profess to solve any current
malady may have indeed
caused it by their own acts
and seek now to solve the
problem without admitting
their own mistake. Solving
Help is
costs
Applications for the 2013
Energy Assistance Program
are being taken by
Northwest Community
Action.
If you feel you may be eligible,
either write to
Northwest Community
Action, Inc., P.O. Box 67,
Badger, MN 56714, or phone
218-528-3258 or 1-800-568-
5329, and an application
will be mailed. Information
is also available at
www.northwestcap.org.
Households may apply once
during the program year of
Oct. 1, 2012 through May
31, 2013.
Energy Assistance eligibility
is based upon household
income and household
size. Assets are no longer
counted for this program.
Both homeowners and
renters may be eligible.
Households who live in subsidized
housing but pay
either heat or electric costs
may also qualify.
Subsidized housing residents
who have both heat
and electric costs included
in their rent do not qualify
for energy assistance.
The eligibility guidelines
for three month’s gross
income are listed below:
• Household size of one
and maximum income of
$5,562
• Household size of two
and maximum income of
$7,274
• Household size of three
and maximum income of
$8,985
• Household size of four
and maximum income of
$10,697
• Household size of five
and maximum income of
$12,408
• Household size of six
and maximum income of
$14,120
Northwest Community
Action serves households
located in Kittson, Lake of
the Woods, East Marshall,
and Roseau counties. Home
visits are available for
homebound applicants upon
request. Households
requesting assistance in
completing the application
are encouraged to phone the
office to set up an appointment.
Note that people are
responsible for their heating
and electric bills until they
hear from Northwest
Community Action.
This program is funded
by the Minnesota
Department of Commerce
and U.S. Department of
Services.
Reflections
Grant Nelson
The comments published in this column are intended to stimulate
thinking and discussion among our readers. They are written
by independent columnists and do not represent the opinion
of the staff or management of The Times/Northern Watch.
the problem truthfully
would shine light on their
initial mistake and in that
their own ego will not abide.
OK, let's shuck to the cob.
The recent school shooting
in Connecticut has given the
current administration a
chance to introduce gun control.
I don't know if they
truly believe gun control
would have prevented this
horrible incident or if they
are simply so cruel as to use
this incident to further their
own political ideals - I suspect
the latter.
We've always had guns,
but we haven't always had
school shootings - at least
not on the scale now reported
with such gusto by the
media. The media tries to
make much of the fact that
you can now buy a semiautomatic
AR-15 rifle and
that removal of this right
will prevent disturbed, violet
people from killing. The
truth is that we have had
more powerful rifles than
the AR-15 for decades and
many of them are semi-automatic.
The AR-15 looks a little
meaner, so it is easier for
nationwide media to demonize
it in furthering their
own agenda against the
Second Amendment.
The availability of
weapons necessary to injure
innocents like in
Connecticut have existed for
years. What has not existed
until recently was the availability
of violent, mentally
unstable people to carry out
these attacks. Until the last
few decades, these folks
were housed in secure hospitals
where they were
exposed to all available help,
yet kept safely away from
our children. High-minded
folks who sought societal
perfection instead of duediligence
decided to streamline
these same violent,
mentally-unstable people
into society. They made the
rules and let the rest of us
deal with, and fund, their
laws. The bulk of society
walks around on eggshells
so that the violent and mentally
unstable may enjoy the
very freedoms they use
against us. Making society
carefully pirouette around
the troublemakers seems to
me like removing all of the
toys from a grade school
because one child cannot
play with them decently. We
need to focus on the source
of the trouble instead of trying
to create a world free of
any way to make trouble. We
lost that chance in the
Garden of Eden.
Society will never be perfect,
it can only be diligent
enough to protect itself
against its more violent elements.
We once protected
ourselves from violent and
mentally unstable people by
housing them and treating
them. A mistake was made
when those folks were
streamlined into society and
began abusing the same
rights the rest of us peacefully
enjoy. We must admit
this mistake. To remove or
reduce the Second
Amendment in the mistaken
belief that a tiny group of
highly violent, unstable people
have the mental capability
to respect yet another
law is ludicrous.
Gothberg meets
students during
Challenger visit
n LHS graduate, UND
goalie talks about
sports, academics
Second grade students in
Kayla Delzer’s class at
Challenger Elementary
School were treated to a special
guest when Zane
Gothberg, a Thief River
Falls native and currently
freshman goalie on the
University of North Dakota
men’s hockey team, stopped
by for a recent visit.
A 2010 Lincoln High
School graduate, Gothberg
spent 90 minutes reading
and talking to the students,
explaining to them what it
takes to be a good studentathlete.
He showed the tools
of his trade – goalie equipment
– and signed autographs.
His visit will be
remembered by a signed
goalie stick that currently
hangs on the classroom wall.
Delzer utilizes a Mystery
Reader program as part of
her weekly class schedule.
Students know a guest will
be appearing, but are not
given the individual’s identity
ahead of time.
“As soon as Zane walked
in the classroom, the kids
started screaming and jumping
with excitement,” said
Delzer. “The kids definitely
knew who Zane was. He’s a
small-town hero to these
kids, and such a great role
model to people of all ages.”
In addition to earning
honors as the state’s top senior
goalie in high school,
Gothberg also played golf for
the Prowlers and was a
member of the National
Honor Society.
Gothberg accepted a
scholarship offer to play
hockey at North Dakota, but
first spent two years at the
Junior level with the Fargo
Force. He was chosen as the
Goaltender of the Year in the
United States Hockey
League before enrolling at
UND, where his studies are
leading him to the field of
occupational therapy.
A draft pick of the Boston
Bruins of the National
Hockey League, Gothberg
told the students much of his
success can be attributed to
his mother and grandmother.
He told them his mother
pushed him to do his best
between the pipes and his
grandmother encouraged
him to work hard at his
eduction. Reflecting his
appreciation for the support,
he offers a tribute on the
back of his helmet that says,
“Love You Grandma Susie.”
Since it was Polar
Express Day for the students,
who were dressed in
pajamas to go along with the
theme, Gothberg began his
visit by reading The Polar
Express.
“He then took time to
teach some important lessons
about school and
sports,” explained Delzer,
herself a student-athlete
while at UND as a member
of the women’s golf team.
“Zane spoke about the
importance of kids setting
goals early and managing
time to reach those goals.”
Although he is most-recognized
as an accomplished
athlete, Gothberg stressed
the importance of doing well
academically, pointed out
Delzer. “Zane explained that
he was a student-athlete,
and that being a good student
comes first and foremost
before being a good
athlete, and that he needed
good grades to play hockey.
He told the second graders
that he took pride in receiving
academic honors before
athletic honors because
there is always life after
sports. He helped kids to
realize that school should
always come first.”
After showing his goalie
gear and explaining how
each piece helps to keep him
safe and protected, Gothberg
answered questions, then
signed autographs – over a
hundred items, estimated
Delzer on items ranging
from notebook paper,
binders and shirts, along
with a doghouse that is part
of the classroom decor.
“Zane did a fantastic job
answering questions about
working hard in school to
achieve their dreams,” mentioned
Delzer. “He went
There are some gifts
we just have to accept
A youngster in the Karlstad area
wanted a “Nerf gun” for Christmas.
Another wanted a “big, big rocket.” I
wonder whether any of those gifts
might need to be returned.
When we get a gift that isn’t just
right, we return it to the store or we
tell ourselves, “It’s the thought that
counts,” right? Well, there are some
gifts we’d like to return, but they
weren’t gifts we found under the tree.
The day after Christmas has become
one of the busiest days of the year for
retailers. It’s the day when a lot of people
redeem the gift cards they received
for Christmas to buy stuff that are on
steep discounts. It’s also the day when
gifts are returned to the store - gifts
that don’t fit just right, aren’t the right
color, don’t work or are just inappropriate.
One website put it this way, “your
aunt might be the best person in the
world, but that’s no guarantee she
won’t send you a lemon of a present.”
When I’ve walked by the lines at
Customer Service, I feel sorry for the
clerks. I can’t imagine dealing with
cranky, tired and frustrated customers.
And, I also feel sorry for the customers
who have to wait in lengthy lines.
What makes it worse is that some
companies seem to take it personally.
They want to know more about you and
why you're returning your present.
Some make you fill out all kinds of
paperwork. Some won’t allow you to
return gifts unless you have a gift
receipt, and a letter from your mother.
Retailers are tightening the terms of
exchanges or gift returns to protect
themselves against fraud, theft and
deception. All you want to do is return
that sweater that was two sizes too
small.
So much for Merry Christmas.
This year, I don’t have any gifts I feel
need to be returned to the stores.
However, there are some gifts we
received this year that I’d like to
return. Trouble is I can’t find a
Customer Service representative to
take them back.
Nature blesses us with many gifts.
We had pretty good weather this year.
To me, Christmas isn’t Christmas without
snow. This year, we had just
enough this year to cover the ground.
However, some places, like in Arkansas
and Texas, got too much. Earlier this
year, residents out on the East Coast
got way too much rain and wind from
Hurricane Sandy. That’s a “gift” I bet
they’d like to return. In northwestern
Minnesota, we had some terrible fires
last fall. There are a lot of benefits to
fire, but I bet there are some people out
there who would like to return that
gift.
Like the saying suggests, “it’s the
thought that counts,” we have to consider
that there were some benefits to
these events. Yet …
In the United States, we’re thankful
for the form of government we have.
There are places in the world where a
change in government means people
being killed. That doesn’t happen here.
We’re also blessed with the ability to
speak our minds without fear of
imprisonment. We could call this a gift,
a tremendous gift, in fact. We had an
election this year, and while no guns
were fired in anger or people killed
because of it, I bet there are parts of
the election “gift” we’d like to return.
Personally, the constant mudslinging
in advertisements were my least
favorite. I’d like to see that returned to
the sender.
When you think about it, I’m sure
there are other events and things that
took place or “gifts” we received last
year that we’d like to return. To date,
however, I haven’t been able to find a
customer service representative or a
gift return policy. I guess we’ll just
have to learn to get along together and
solve our problems.
At about 11:30 a.m. Dec.
21, the Red Lake County
Sheriff ’s Office requested
assistance from the
Pennington County Sheriff’s
Office in pursuing a stolen
vehicle. According to the
complaint and the police
report, a Pennington County
sheriff’s deputy and other
Thief River Falls law
enforcement assisted a Red
Lake County deputy after a
stolen vehicle was stopped
along Highway 32 Northeast
in St. Hilaire. Schue was
allegedly driving the vehicle,
and Riendeau was the passenger.
The vehicle had been
stolen from Valley City, N.D.
A complaint alleged that
Riendeau told law enforcement
that she had met with
an unknown man in South
Fargo, N.D., on Dec. 20. She
said the man was desperate
to sell the 2004 Ford Taurus
and said he would sell it for
$500. The complaint indicated
that the Kelley Blue Book
value for the car was considerably
more than that
amount. Riendeau said the
man told her that he had
been released from the Cass
County Jail on Dec. 18. She
said he told her that he didn’t
have the title, but she
could take the car that night
and get back to him about
purchasing it.
Riendeau then went to
Minnesota with the car. She
said she called the
Department of Motor
Vehicles, asking if the vehicle
had been stolen. She said
she thought it had been
stolen since it was a nice,
cheap car. The complaint
alleged that Riendeau couldn’t
provide any further
details on the car or the
name of the person from
whom she had obtained the
car
Ȧccording to the complaint
against Schue, he
allegedly said he overhead
Riendeau talking with the
DMV. He said he thought his
roommate had paid between
$280 and $300 for the car.
Schue said he had asked the
man if the car had been
stolen. He also said he had
test-driven the vehicle.
Schue was unable to provide
the identity of the seller or
the title of the vehicle.
The complaint indicated
that Schue’s driving privileges
were cancelled as inimical
to public safety in
October 2005 and January
2008. It also noted that he
had driving-while-impaired
offenses and driving-afterrevocation
offenses on his
record. ‘
The Imagery Analysis
program is a 30-credit twosemester
program. The innovative
program teaches students
to become skilled
imagery analysts at the
entry level. Students will
learn how to interpret and
distinguish imagery from a
variety of sources and sensors
that are being used in
the field today.
With the increased use of
unmanned aerial vehicles
for surveillance, the field is
overwhelmed with data and
desperately needs people to
interpret this data.
Northland Aerospace saw
the need for skilled imagery
analysts and developed this
program to prepare students
to fill this emerging gap in
the workforce.
As a student of this pioneering
program, students
can expect hands-on training
from industry experts.
Students will be taught
using the newest technology
in simulated workplace
environments and ultramodern
labs to ensure they
are ready to enter the workforce
upon completion.
Sanford Health in Thief
River Falls as the organization’s
crisis response coordinator/utilization
review on
mental health unit.
Sjostrand was also a
member of the Lancaster
School Board for 22 years,
serving as both chair and
clerk. She feels her time on
the school board combined
with her time as Sanford’s
crisis response coordinator
and her experience as a district
rep for Roseau High
School, helped her prepare
for her new role as a supervisor.
Helping others
Sjostrand knew at a
young age that she wanted
to help others.
“I would have to say,
throughout my high school
years, I liked helping people,”
Sjostrand said. “ I took
that role through church
youth group and in school.”
While she was in high
school, Sjostrand learned
that she wanted to pursue a
career in social work after
she attended a function at
Concordia College in
Moorhead.
Sjostrand didn’t dive
right into her career, however.
She got married first and,
at age 25, attended
Moorhead State University.
Sjostrand feels that waiting
to attend college gave her a
better perspective on life.
Now at Pennington
County, Sjostrand performs
professional work and
administration of the
agency’s social service programs.
Her responsibilities
include development, implementation
and assessment
of policies; supervision of
assigned professionals,
para-professionals, office
support personnel and
supervision of all social services,
including children and
family, childcare, mental
health, developmental disabilities,
chemical dependency
and adult programs.
Sjostrand oversees a staff
of 14 that includes an office
support person, two case
aides and 11 social workers.
She also reviews case
records to ensure that
agency and state policy rules
and regulations are adhered
to; and proper social work
practices are being observed.
Sjostrand said Penning -
ton County Social Services is
making children’s mental
health case management a
priority. In the past, children’s
mental health cases
could be managed by any of
the county’s social workers.
Now there will be one social
worker who will specialize in
children’s mental health
services.
“It’s going to be a positive
program for our children
and families in Pennington
County,” Sjostrand said.
Sandyhook shootings
hit home
As a former school social
worker, Sjostrand had a
strong reaction to the news
that 20 students and six
teachers were murdered at
Sandy Hook Elementary in
Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14.
Her initial thought as a
social worker was that not
one, but several resources,
failed to prevent the tragedy.
“Everyone needs to work
together, from the federal
government to our communities,
to help our precious
children” Sjostrand said. “I
see cuts, cuts, cuts. We need
to put more money back into
our resources.”
Sjostrand said resources
need to be pooled to look for
ways to keep people safe,
and more funding for mental
health resources.
Sjostrand said she wants
people to feel like the
Department of Human
Services is a place where
they can come for help. “Call
us with concerns and we will
try to help the best that we
can,” Sjostrand said. “Social
and obtain precise measurements
within the area of
interest, integrate and interpret
maps and charts as
they relate to imagery, and
develop imagery information
dissemination skills.
Students will acquire a variety
of skills ranging from
Unmanned Aerial Systems
general knowledge to a precise
depiction of the imagery
objective. Students receive
hands-on training using Full
Motion Video UAS derived
imagery and other sensor
data.
“Northland has built a
platform from which
Imagery Analysis curriculum
can be articulated. One
would be perplexed to find a
comparable certificate program
at this academic level,”
added Sterling Williams,
Imagery Analysis program
manager.
Since this is such a new
field, students may be wondering
if they would be a
good fit for this program. An
imagery analyst should be
able to be a strong communicator
(both verbal and nonverbal),
an active learner,
critical thinker, be able to be
very attentive to details, and
be proficient on a computer.
An imagery analyst also
should be able to work independently,
use innovation as
it relates to the workplace,
be adaptable and flexible, be
persistent, and have excellent
self-control.
As an imagery analyst,
there are four core functions.
Students will be interacting
with technology – namely
computers, full motion
video, and still imagery.
They will be gathering and
reporting vital information
through observation and
analysis from a variety of
sources. They will be processing
information by compiling,
coding, categorizing,
calculating, tabulating,
audit ing, or verifying information
or data. They will be
communicating verbally and
nonverbally to supervisors,
peers, and subordinates
through all communication
channels.
Once students graduate,
they will be in a position to
be employable virtually anywhere.
According to Simply
Hired, the average salary for
imagery analyst jobs is
$69,000. Average imagery
analyst salaries can vary
greatly due to company, location,
industry, experience,
and benefits.
across the country. And, the
NCATC Board continues to
elect leadership of highly
motivated, actively involved
leaders from the nation’s
community and technical
colleges. The selection of
Jim Retka as the NCATC
Board president for 2013 –
continues to raise the bar on
an already illustrious list of
past coalition leaders – and I
am delighted to serve Jim,
the Board, and our membership
going forward.”
“Jim is an ideal individual
to lead NCATC,” said Dr.
Anne Temte, president of
understands the challenges
and opportunities of innovation,
emerging industry, and
cutting-edge technology. He
led Northland’s efforts to
reinvigorate its aviation
maintenance technology
program and to develop
first-in-the-nation aerospace
programs related to
Unmanned Aerial Systems.
Jim knows the importance
of building business and
industry partnerships and
alliances among educational
institutions.”
2013 marks the 25th
anniversary for NCATC and
the organization will mark
