Be Careful - Brass on the Road
P a g e 2
This is not a police report…..but there is going to be a lot of brass on the roads around Annapolis Royal on June 17, 18, and 19th.
More than 25 automobiles built before 1916, generally known as brass cars, are coming to Annapolis Royal as a part of a longer driving
tour organised by the Snappers Brass & Gas Club from Ohio.
The cars arrive on the evening of June 17, and will be exploring our area with its many attractions on Saturday June 18th. Stops
will include the Farmers Market, the Historic Gardens, the Tidal Power Station, and Fort Anne. A drive to Victoria Beach along Granville
Road is planned with stops at the North Hills Museum and Port Royal.
Blaine Schumacher and Heidi Richells will be hosting an informal breakfast for the group on Saturday at their car collection facility
on Prince Albert Road. Grant Slinn, who has developed a proposal to create a locally based Car Institute dedicated to transferring the
skills needed to maintain and restore cars like these is delighted by this event. He said “ This is just the sort of activity that would follow
from the establishment of the Car Institute. This could make Annapolis Royal a centre for antique car restoration in the Maritimes and well
beyond.”
Snappers Brass & Gas is a brass car touring region of the AACA (Antique Auto Club of America) uninhibited by geographic
boundaries. The club was founded on August 19, 1993 in the Snappers Saloon on the banks of the Ohio River in Ripley, Ohio. Club activities
are restricted to cars manufactured before 1916.
Snappers is dedicated to the restoration, preservation and enjoyment of Brass Era Automobiles. The club’s activities emphasize the enjoyment
of old time automobile touring away from the hustle and bustle of our modern lives in some of the most beautiful parts of the United
States and Canada.
John Gillette, tour coordinator for the Snappers, says “This is our third club tour to Nova Scotia – we really
enjoy the great hospitality and scenery”.
Bill 93 amends Nova Scotia’s Motor Vehicle Act, changing interactions
between bicycles and cars.
Condensed Version of Bill 93:
■Motorists are required to leave a minimum of 1m between their vehicle
and a cyclist while passing.
■Motor vehicles may cross the centre line in order to pass a cyclist, when
safe to do so.
■Cyclists are to ride on the right side of the road in the direction of traffic,
but may move towards the centre of the lane when safer in order to
avoid hazards or maintain a regular traffic flow- -including when riding
through a roundabout, turning left, or passing another vehicle.
■Motor vehicles may not be parked in a bike lane, or drive in a bike lane
except to avoid a hazard or to pass a left turning vehicle (then the passing
car must yield to cyclists in the bike lane).
■Cyclists are to use bike lanes if present on their route and it is safe to do
so (i.e. free of hazards etc.)
■Cyclists may pass on the right of stopped motor vehicles, if safe to do
so.
Introduced as a Government Bill, Bill 93 was passed in slightly amended
form by all members of the Legislature and is scheduled to be proclaimed
law in early June, 2011.
This June Annapolis Royal will be hosting the Gathering of
the Clans. Our town was chosen because this was the landing
spot of the first Scottish settlers. In 2007, a monument
recognizing this historic moment was erected. The first
Gathering of the Clans was held in 1979 and is held every
four years in Nova Scotia. The Gathering is sponsored by
the Federation of Scottish Culture in Nova Scotia and
brings together thirty-three clan societies.
Support the Annapolis Youth Park: Sponsor
a Tree or Bench
It’s an exciting time for our community. Phase 1 of the
Annapolis Youth Park near the French Basin Trail is
nearing completion. That’s where you come in! After
five years we are still approximately $6000 away from
the funds needed to complete this phase of the project.
We are hoping that individuals will join together at work,
community groups or within families to help with the
landscaping costs. Every $100 donated will purchase one
tree. All contributors will be given a plaque marking the
tree of their choice within the park. What a lasting legacy
to leave your community and what a tangible way to say
that you support the youth of our town!
Tree varieties include yellow birch, red maple, sugar
maple, red oak, mountain ash, striped maple, serviceberry,
high bush cranberry, witch hazel, Labrador tea,
bayberry, low bush blueberry, and wintergreen. Organic
native plants, including swamp milkweed, will also be
used to make sure the park blends in well with the local
environment. Varieties have been chosen to promote the
Monarch Butterfly population, as they are at-risk in Nova
Scotia.
If you have a tree preference, please indicate this when
you drop off your donation to Sandi Campbell at the
Town Hall. Cheques should be payable to the Town of
Annapolis Royal. Please ensure we have your full name
and mailing address so that you can be issued a tax receipt.
We hope you will join us on June 25th for the opening
ceremonies.
Composting in your backyard is one of the most environmentally
friendly and cost effective ways to turn your waste into a
valuable resource — compost. Combined with Enviro-Depot©
or curbside recycling, backyard composting can divert up to
50% of your household's garbage.
Readily backyard compostable materials include:Fruit and vegetable
peelings, leaf and yard waste, baked goods, rice and pasta , tea
bags, coffee grounds and filters and egg shells.
Remember, no meat, fish, bones, dairy products or other oily
food products.
Four Choices
1. backyard composting
2. vermin-composting (worm bins)
3. backyard food digester
4. centralized composting
Backyard Composting
P a g e 5
3. Backyard Food Digester (e.g Green Cones)
Although it won’t give you compost, this sealed system will digest
all of your organic wastes, including the things on the not
okay to compost list, except for toxins and treated materials. The
most important factors of this option are installation and upkeep.
It’s the only system that requires direct full sun for at least six
hours a day. As the food scraps are digested their fiber is left
behind, so the chamber will eventually fill with fibrous residue
which can then be used in the garden capped with 12-20cm of
soil.
4. Community Compost Collector Sites
The final option is taking your household compost to one of the
four community compost sites. They are located at:
∗ the Legion parking lot
∗ at the end of Prince William Street
∗ on Champlain Drive across from AWEC
∗ at the Public Works yard entrance.
1. Backyard Composing
The key to a trouble-free backyard compost pile is a good mix
of foodstuffs (greens), dry yard wastes (browns), moisture and
air. Greens are pliable, moist and fragrant while browns are dry
and brittle. Sandwich layers of greens and browns by equal volume
and lightly mix with a garden fork. You may have to occasionally
add water to keep the layers moist. In a heap, air is the
life blood for thousands of different organisms involved in the
composting process. The more air you provide the faster the
process. The finished compost will take three months to two
years to make. Your finished compost should have the moisture
level of a damp, wrung sponge. It can then be used in your garden.
2. Vermi-Composting
If treading through the snow is not part of your plan, there is
always the option of indoor composting with worms. The
worms, better known as red wigglers, can be found in outdoor
compost or farm manure piles or bought commercially.
Whether you build or purchase a worm box, they are usually
small enough to fit in a quiet corner of the kitchen, basement or
heated garage. Given proper care, this type of composting produces
a generous amount of castings about every four months.
The bedding in the vermi-composter is made up of browns.
Compostable food scraps are buried in it and the worms eat
both, producing an earthy smelling manure called castings.
Worms can eat half their weight in food scraps per day. When
the worms have turned most of the compost into castings, push
it aside, while adding fresh scraps in the new bedding. The
worms will move over to the fresh bedding in about a month,
than you can remove the castings and use it in your garden.
OK to Compost in options 1, 2, 3
Greens
baked goods, cooked goods,
nuts, sauces, jam, popcorn,
vegetable scraps, coffee
grounds, fruit, soups, salads,
chips, grass, pasta
Browns
leaves, eggshells, teabags, coffee
filters, wood/sawdust, tissue,
dead houseplants, newspaper
Not OK to Compost
bones*, toxins, shortening*, mayonnaise*, treated wood, dairy
goods*, butter*, treated plants*, syrup*, painted wood, meat*,
lard*, candy*
* These items can be composted at the Community Compost
Collection Sites.
The Town of Annapolis Royal will reimburse individuals 50%
of the cost of their backyard composters or Green Cones.
If you want to have your composter cleaned
out, please call Lloyd Cook at home at
532-5865 or on his cell phone at
Did you know that the Public Works building is being
upgraded? Renovations have begun on the old Public Works
building, which will now house all the tools and equipment that
help to keep out Town in tip-top shape. Construction of a new
structure, which will be attached to the
current building, has also commenced.
This will create a new office space, map
Public Works
employees. An open house featuring the
new facilities will be
scheduled in the near future.

Tree News June 2011
It's been a great spring.....for
trees this year. The trees are every shade of green , the tender new
leaves are so beautiful. The magnolias continue to blossom; some of
the yellow ones are just beginning to open up. Have you noticed the
yellow magnolias by the Post Office? “Butterflies” is finishing up and
“ Yellow bird” is just beginning; they've made it through the winter
without damage. The magnolias were really at their best this year with
all the rain....the “Magnolia Weekend” was a success and many people
came to town to see the flowering trees.
A number of elm trees were injected with the vaccine “Dutch Trig”;
we’re hoping to protect our stately elm trees from Dutch elm disease.
The way they grow so tall with their crowns touching , overhanging
the road, building a canopy — they are very special trees.
And down by the train station....the area of the native trees and
shrubs....sugar maple, red oak, yellow birch, more service berries,
some blue berries, witch hazel, black choke berry and even a red
choke berry ( these are choke berries not choke cherries, called
aronia ). Choke berries are native to Nova Scotia, very decorative and
have edible berries, high in antioxidants. Hopefully they will like it
there and spread out .
And there are two interesting new trees at the entrance of the
County’s municipal building : one new magnolia called “Randy” and
a “dawn redwood” . These redwoods are native to China but there are
getting extinct in the wild: one source said there were only ~ 150 left.
They grow well in cultivation and seem to tolerate urban conditions
well. The dawn redwood is a deciduous conifer, like our native larch,
a very interesting handsome tree.
I often wonder who planted all the old trees that are growing around
town...I would like to say thank you to whomever it was.
Oh Dear?! Problems with Deer?
There is a deer deterrent called Bobbex, which has
shown some promising results in the U.S., and has recently
been licensed for use in Canada. There is a distributor in
the Annapolis Valley. The contact information is:
Clean Annapolis River Project has Willow and Dogwood
stakes available for FREE. The stakes are 1m
in length and are usually in bundles of 15. These willows
were harvested from December to March and
have been in cold and wet storage since they were
gathered. Having been in storage longer than recommended,
they may or may not grow when planted. We
have an overabundance of these stakes and need to
get rid of them a.s.a.p. If you would like some FREE
stakes for your garden/yard please call CARP at 532-
7533 for availability.
Once again, the Town of Annapolis Royal will have flower barrels for
businesses upon request. They will be delivered to your location. All
you need to do is add soil, some of your favorite flowers and a little
love during the growing season. It will be the business owner’s responsibility
to remove the barrels by Halloween. To
place an order, please contact Sandi at 532-3148.
