Burlington
The Pioneer Zephyr
This diminutive lightweight diesel - electric powered stainless steel train
revolutionized American passenger rail travel. Burlington President Ralph Budd
believed in high-speed lightweight train travel and the Zepnyr would recover
traffic lost to automobiles while slashing operating costs of steam locomotives
and heavyweight cars.
Budd Manufacturing Company's Edward G. Budd (no relation) conceived the
technique of shot-welding stainless steel to use it in constructing the strongest,
per pound, car bodies for passenger trains. Budd's fluted-sides were the secret
to their strength & their beauty. She was completed in Philadelphia on April 7,
1934. It's greatest day was May 26, 1934 when the CB&Q attempted a nonstop
record-breaking run from Denver to the "Century of Progress" Exposition, in
Chicago. It was to be nonstop! The Zepnyr traveled 1015.4 miles in just 13
hours and 5 minutes, at a top speed of 112.5 M.P.H and etched it's name in
Railroad history.
In 1960 the Burlington donated the little Zepnyr to the Museum of Science and
Industry in Chicago. For 37 years she sat outside, a host to stray cats and such.
Remembering the Zepnyr from his childhood in Hinsdale, IL. David Grainger
of the International Industrial Supply firm W. W. Grainger, championed the
complete restoration of the train set. The Grainger Foundation contributed over
half of the $5,250,000 total cost. David is a Board Member of the Museum.
Today the Pioneer Zepnyr sits proudly in a glass enclosure of an atrium
surrounded by an underground, three deck, $43,500,000.00 parking facility. This
little lady never looked so fine.
This full color lithograph is from an original acrylic painting by Mike Danneman.
The size is 18"x 24" and is printed on 80# Kashmir Kanvas Cover stock, virgin
white cover stock.
About the Artist
Mike Danneman, 34, has had a lifelong interest in trains.
His dad nurtured the interest in railroading, while his mom
showed him how much fun art can be. Growing up in these
conditions definitely had something to do with painting trains
when he got older. He began his career at Kalmbach
Publishing Co. in the Art Department in 1984. Named
TRAINS Magazine's Assistant Art Director in 1988 then Art
Director in1990. Mike is currently painting full time and also
freelancing railroad photography. Traveling is also a big
part of Mike's life. He has traveled extensively around the
United States and parts of Canada in pursuit of railroad
photos. Many of these photos later become sources for
inspiration when seated in front of the art easel. Getting out
and actually seeing the railroad, or at least seeing the
country it used to run through, is very useful for the
painting's accuracy and detail. Two photo books coauthored
with Gary W. Dolzall, Steel Rails Across America,
and The Spirit of Railroading, have been published by
Kalmbach. Other hobbies include collecting 1/43 scale
automobiles and also a restored 1967 Mustang convertible.
Other interests include model railroading, some sports and
the outdoors in general. Mike and his wife Katie, another
artist, live in Arvada, Colorado.
The Burlington Route Historical Society is an Illinois non-profit corporation whose
membership consists of diverse group of historians, collectors, railfans, photographers,
modelersand railroad employeeswho havebanded together to share one common inter
est,the Chicago,Burlingtonand Quincy Railroad; its two affiliates, the Colorado &Southern
and the Fort Worth & Denver, and their predecessors. The fellowship created by this com
mon interest and the opportunity for networking with members and others are the soci
ety's greatest assets.
Our mission is to preserve and disseminate historical information about the collective
Burlington railroads for the benefit of our members and to others by:
• creating and promoting fellowship and education among
persons interested in the CB&Q
• locating,gathering, preserving,interpreting and distributing
information, documents, publications and other tangible items
relating to the CB&Q
Activities to promotethisfellowship are geared to servethe widevariety of interestof its
members on almost every facet of the CB&Q as it served "EverywhereWest."
Founded in October 1979,the BRHS has enjoyed a steady growth that now allows us
to produce two publications. The Zephyr is a newsletter featuring Society news, current
events, articles on modeling.and frequently data sheets on equipment, structures or oper
ation. Also included is a Question and Answer forum where members share information
you neverdreamed was available. TheBurlington Bulletin, named after one of the CB&Q's
own internalpublications, isa slick paper magazinewith feature articlesabout operations,
equipment and communities alongthe "Way ofthe Zephyrs." Each issueisdevoted solely
to the Burlington and containsno commercial advertising. In1989a Burlington Bulletin arti
cle was the recipientof the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society's "David P. Morgan
ArticleAward/This marked the firsttime the award was given to an article in a publication
other than one of the mainstream national magazines. The BRHS isjustifiablyproud of this
recognition.
Due to the all-volunteer nature of our society, our publication schedule is somewhat irreg
ular, even though we strive to get two issues of each publication distributed each year.
However, publications aren't the only benefits of membership in the BRHS! Each fall
the members of the BRHS meet in a city served by the Burlington. This 2-3 day meet nor
mallyincludes our annual business meeting, model contest and display, photography con
test, clinics, an evening dinner and program usuallyfollowed by slides and movies.Aoneday
spring meet, that includesa swap session, evening meal, and a program followed by
slides, is also scheduled.
By workingtogether, we can accomplishmuch more than through individual efforts.
Materials presented for publication, or for sharing with the membership in other ways,
come from private collections ;or through research at various repositories of Burlington
records. The BRHS depends heavily upon its members to providesupport for the group
through their willingness to contribute in any way possible. Those with experience in any
phase of publishing, drafting, have knowledge of the operation of the Burlington, or have
collections of photographsor information are encouragedto offer their assistance. Those
wishing to provide additional financial supportmay join as a sustaining member, and in
recognition ofthatsupport,a list ofall sustaining members arepublished inthe Burlington
Bulletinonce per year.
Libraries, historical societies, museums and other organizations interested in preserv
ingand sharing the Burlington story, while not legally allowed to be members, areinvited
Adding A DCC Decoder to the HO Zephyr
Front of Locomotive
NOTE:
The following information is provided as reference material only.
Con-Cor only warrantees this model in "Analog" operation ONLY. "Analog" means in the traditional
12-16v DC two rail operation with a traditional power pack.
Con-Cor has installed a Printed Circuit ("PC") board in the tender which will make it easier for those of
you who wish to convert this model to DCC (Digital Command Control) operation. This "PC" Board has
the standard 8 pin configuration as designed by the NMRA (National Model Railroad Association) to
facilitate the installation of a DCC Decoder. Pins #9 and #10 are for a speaker connection if you decide to
go with a Decoder with Sound effects.
BUT, Con-Cor DOES NOT manufacturer, install, diagnose, or Repair DCC decoders.
If the customer so chooses to convert this model to "DCC" control, then it is up to customer to consult
with a DCC expert, or directly with the DCC Decoder manufacturer of his/her choice to do a proper
installation.
Once the customer installs the DCC control, the "Analog" Warrantee is voided. This is VERY important
that you check this model to make sure it runs property in "Analog" mode before proceeding to install a
DCC Decoder.
By doing this, if you experience a problem with the engine after installing the DCC decoder you will
know it was something that was done while installing the DCC decoder as it ran OK when you tested it in
the "Analog" model. This will narrow down your search for the problem.
IF you change over your model to DCC operation, and have a problem, DO NOT return the model to us,
contact the help line ofthe Decoder manufacturer and they will help you directly.
The Decoder manufacturers listed below all have a sample ofthis model in their tech department and are
ready to help you with the installation oftheir products ifyou incur a problem.
