MELVILLE HIGH SCHOOL NETBALL CLUB The season has come to an end and all teams did extremely well with the Social Team winning the finals for their section. Congratulations to Liz Willis and the Social team. At the recent Club Prizegiving, the following players received awards: MLV Tuakana (Senior Development) Most Valuable Player Nakita Most Consistent Player Christina Sportsmanship Talia Senior Development Most Valuable Player Sarah Most Committed Player Juliet Most Achieved Player Te Waanahi MHS Social Most Valuable Player Alisha Most Improved Player Airini Fairplay Chloe Service Award Cerise MHS Divas Most Valuable Player Kendall Most Consistent Player Morgan Most Improved Player Susan 6 MLV Teina Most Valuable Player Ocean Most Consistent Player Tiara Sportsmanship Stephanie Some of the many highlights throughout the season involved our senior players participating in the V8 Supercars 400 ITM, netball workshops that involved our local community schools, the Upper North Island Secondary School Tournament, the Hamilton City Netball Holiday Programme where our girls displayed great leadership, and our unforgettable fundraising Allstarz Concert. We would like to thank the following people for their awesome support: Lethal Dance Crew, Ani , Juliet, Penny, Zion, Lehi and Logan, Helaman, Shaquille, Telitha, Deanwell Kapahaka/Pasifika Group, Misima, Desiree, Rani and Shanice. Many thanks also to Louanna Hori, Russell Wilson, Michelle Wetere-Heu, Joanna Wilson, Shervan Heu, Tom Wiperi, Alana Marsh, Matua Ray, Dave McNulty, MLV Intermediate Year 8A Netball team, parents and Melville High staff. 7 Sports@MLV Cricket The new season got underway with the 1 st XI’s playing Twenty20 games at the University. In the first game against HBHS Development, HBHS batted first and put on 132/7. Melville was never really in the run chase and was all out for 68. With the cob webs blown out the team performed much better against Te Awamutu. A much better bowling effort saw Te Awamutu all out for 73. Robbie was the best of the bowlers, taking 3/17. The Melville batsmen made hard work of a light run chase with the Wilson brothers scoring the winning runs with one wicket remaining. The anchor of the innings was James, scoring a solid 37. The first of the One Day games was against St Peter’s 2 nd XI at home. Batting first, Melville managed 110 runs, which looked to be a few short in the conditions. Once again James starred with the bat, making 35. Tight line and length bowling had St Peter’s under pressure straight away and they lost wickets regularly to be all out for 39. The best of the Melville bowlers was James, taking 4/14. Water Polo After finishing top of their division in Term 3, the combined Melville/Fraser team has got away to a good start this term, beating HBHS 8-0. Maui featured scoring 3 goals. The team plays on Monday evenings at Waterworld Te Rapa. Volleyball Matua Ted has brought together a group of keen boys to compete in the Junior Boys’ Volleyball competition. After four games the boys have won 2 and lost 2, narrowly losing to the top team, Matamata in the last game. The team is ably led by Atunaisa. Touch Miss Hill has a squad of 10 Junior Girls competing in the Secondary schools Touch Competition on Wednesdays. After two games the girls have had a win and a loss. With regular trainings they are showing huge improvement and coming together well as a team. Basketball After qualifying 3 rd at the Regional Basketball Championships in Manukau recently, the Boys’ Senior Basketball team travelled to Palmerston North to compete in the National Secondary Schools Championships. This is the first time a team from Melville High School has competed in this event. Competing with the top 24 teams in New Zealand was a great challenge for the players, coaches and supporters. Supportive team play during the preliminary rounds saw the boys playing off against Hamilton Boys’ High School for 11 th and 12 th placings. This tightly fought local derby saw Melville winning 96- 79. This placed the boys in the top half of the tournament and ahead of a number of larger “all boys” schools from around the country. The successful team were: Ethan (Captain), Izael, Ezrym, Jershon, Helaman, Brigham, Riley, Brandon, Isaac, Jared and Haimona. Head Coach was Mr Phillip Smiler, assisted by Mr Paurini and Mr Warren. Team Manager was Mr Kutia. Special thanks go to the large number of whanau and supporters that travelled with the team. Izael travelled to New Caledonia last week after being selected in the New Zealand Under 17 team. This is great reward for a player who has put in a tremendous amount of effort and follows Ethan’s selection in the Tournament team after the Under 17 National Championships. Congratulations boys – a fine effort!
