KAPA HAKA SUCCESS
Our combined school Kapa Haka group,
Mangakotukutuku/Marawaatea (combined Melville
High School and Fairfield College) won the Hauraki
Competitions at Waihi on Saturday 30 October. The
group performed well with a number of new original
items and impressed the judges with the quality of
their items and their te reo Māori. Senior student
Levi was awarded the Best Male Performer award.
My congratulations are extended to the combined
roopu for their achievements in this competition. A
special acknowledgement is made for the huge
contribution that tutors, school staff, family and
whanau have made towards Mangakotukutuku/
Marawaatea’s success.
ALTRUSA AWARD 2010
This year our recipient of
the Altrusa Youth Award
was Anna (pictured). This
Award recognises a
Year 12 student who has
all round merit in a
number of areas including
academic excellence,
courtesy, care towards
others and community
spirit. Anna embodies
these qualities
along with a passion for service in support of
Melville High School. Anna received her award at
a Mayoral function, along with one student from
each of the other secondary schools.
Congratulations, Anna!
Melville High School Gym
Parents/caregivers, families, whanau and
friends are all cordially invited to our Junior
Academic Prizegiving, the final event of the
school year. All Year 9 and 10 students are
required to attend in their school uniform.
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Tena koutou katoa (Greetings to you all)
The final term is well underway. It has been a busy
last few weeks and I thank staff, students and
parents for the way they have coped with the
relocation of staff from the administration block.
The shift occurred with a minimum of fuss and
bother over the holiday break. The admin staff and
staffroom are now temporarily housed in the CLC
(night classes) building and our Deputy Principal
and Assistant Principals are in the Learning
Support building which is adjacent to the Deanery.
The ongoing industrial action has been a challenge
and I thank you all for your support. Our PPTA
branch (a school site is called a branch) has been
flexible over “the work to rule” which has been very
much appreciated. The PPTA will continue with its
ban on meetings out of normal hours - 8.30 am to
5.00 pm and call back days. The dates of this
action are recorded elsewhere in this newsletter. I
am pleased to report that staff internal relations are
remaining positive as we balance the competing
issues in this dispute.
Last month a large contingent of staff and family
supported our Senior boys in their efforts at the
Basketball Nationals in Palmerston North. The
team finished in the top half of the draw, beating
Hamilton Boys High and finished as the top
un-seeded team. This was an impressive
achievement. My congratulations are extended to
the boys and their coaching and management
team. This was a tremendous achievement for our
first attempt. I would also like to acknowledge
Ethan (under 17) and Izael (Under 17) who are
members of the New Zealand National Basketball
teams.
Our school kapa haka Mangakotukutuku joined with
Fairfield College (Marawaatea) kapa haka group
last weekend in a winning combination
performance at the Hauraki competitions in Waihi.
This was a great effort considering the tight
timeframe.
HEAD STUDENTS 2011
The school has begun the selection process for
our Head Students for 2011. I was impressed with
the presentations at this week’s assembly as
Head Boy and Head Girl nominees shared their
goals and abilities with the students.
This year, we have the following nominees: Head
Girl - Gina, Kiera and Anna; Head Boy - Alex,
Nishil, Robbie and Andrew.
The process involves all students and staff voting
for the positions of Head Students, with myself, as
Principal, having a vote and a casting vote if
necessary. The process is transparent and the
successful students will be announced at the
Senior Academic Prizegiving. I would like to thank
these students for putting themselves forward for
this positive and challenging leadership role.
MANGAKOTUKUTUKU ACKNOWLEDGES
LOCAL BUSINESS SUPPORT
Mangakotukutuku Kapa Haka roopu would like to
acknowledge and thank the following businesses
for their kind donations towards prizes for the
recently held whanau evening:
• Bader Pharmacy First
• Bader Butchers
• Bader Lotto Store
• Bader Price Cutter Store
• 2 Fez Store in Bader
• Jingle Bells in Bader
• Le Rêve Consultant (Donna McCracken)
The evening was a huge success and enjoyed by
the families/whanau and friends of our wonderful
Kapa Haka group.
Thanks also to the Community Radio Station
Team for promoting the event.
Finally, we have a number of gatherings and formal
occasions ahead and I encourage you all to put
some time aside to support students and celebrate
their successes. The impending Senior Academic
Prizegiving on 10 November and the Junior
Prizegiving on 7 December are two of these key
events.
LITERACY AND NUMERACY CALLBACK
Several parents of senior students have been
informed that their children are required to attend
school after the Senior Prizegiving to ensure they
have further opportunities to gain the prescribed
Literacy and Numeracy credits. As you may be
aware there are a minimum number of literacy
(reading, writing, speaking) and numeracy credits
that students must have achieved before they can
get NCEA Level 1. I am requiring students who
have yet to gain their 8 Literacy and 8 Numeracy
credits to attend school after Wednesday 10
November to work with teaching staff until they
have completed these credits. While school does
not officially end until Wednesday 8 December,
we hope that up to an additional week’s focused
effort will make a significant difference for these
students.
We are undertaking this strategy because in 2011
we will not be delivering these old literacy and
numeracy credits as NZQA will be changing the
way literacy and numeracy credits are awarded.
In 2011 students cannot mix and mingle new
credits with old (2010) ones. Students would need
to undertake 10 of the new literacy and 10 of the
new numeracy credits and they will not be able to
carry forward any of their old credits that they
gained this year or in previous years. Melville
High School has no choice in this matter.
Students who are unsuccessful will be required to
undertake the new Level 1 standards in 2011.
I thank families for your support in this matter. A
letter informing families of this situation was sent
out last week. If you have any queries regarding
this matter please don’t hesitate to contact me.
TAUPO DAY-NIGHT THRILLER
Throughout the year, many Institute of Sport students
were lucky enough to experience the mountain bike
tracks at the Red Wood Forest in Rotorua. One day,
Mr Edwards asked a group of us if we would like to
enter a six hour or 12 hour relay mountain bike
challenge in Taupo. With over 3000 riders and 650
teams, this is the largest mountain bike event in New
Zealand. Alongside us he would also enter a team of
his mates. So with no real expectations of any
placement, just an excited spirit, we entered our team
of four in the six hour challenge; Andrew, Robbie,
Kevin and myself. Eventually the Friday afternoon
before the big day came and we loaded up our van
and headed down to Taupo. Once we arrived at Spa
Road Park, we set up our tents next to the track which
would also turn into our transition station for the next
day. While we were setting up our tents, Mr Edwards
and Robbie set off for Subway; it was then we noticed
Mr Edwards had forgotten to bring tent pegs and
poles for one of the tents! After resolving that obstacle
we checked out the thermal springs and headed back
up to camp to toast some marshmallows.
Saturday morning finally came, mixed with fog,
overcast sky and the smell of fresh coffee. As we
fuelled up with food many more teams were arriving.
Since we were in the six hour competition, we
camped one end of the field whilst 12 hour
competitors camped the other end. We began
preparing our bikes, checking brakes, seat heights
and any other adjustments before starting at 10am.
The track was roughly 8km for one lap, mixed with up
hills, down hills, open spaces and tight forest track.
Andrew was the opening rider for our team setting a
good pace. When he came back to our transition
station we swapped over the transponder to the ankle
on the next rider and made sure he got re-hydrated
and kept warm. We continued this cycle for six hours.
Robbie and Kevin kept on placing good lap times
also. About three hours through, we realised we had a
good chance of getting a place in the Open
Secondary School category and by putting in good lap
times we were guaranteed a medal. So, with new
motivation, we sent Andrew on a back-to-back lap
completing our last lap with 37 minutes remaining.
With two minutes remaining we waited at the finish
line hoping he would make it back in time or the lap
wouldn’t count. No sign of him at six hours and a few
minutes later we found out it was because he got a
puncture halfway around the track. Good effort though
and through our hard work we ended up in second
place in the secondary school competition! On the
podium, we received our medals and bike pumps as a
prize. We were so excited and happy with that result.
Congratulations Kevin, Andrew, and Robbie for great
riding and thanks Mr Edwards, Sean Christian and
Graham for riding alongside us and encouraging us. It
was an amazing experience and it would be great for
our school to enter again next year!
Melville High School is the proud recipient of
$5000 grant from Youthtown which has been
donated for use in the sports department for
Receiving such contributions enables the school to
ensure that we are able to field teams and athletes
to a standard that reflects our students’ pride in
their school.
A big thank you to Youthtown for these very
generous funds for our students.

The new season got underway with the 1 st XI’s
playing Twenty20 games at the University. In
the first game against HBHS Development,
HBHS batted first and put on 132/7. Melville
was never really in the run chase and was all
out for 68.
With the cob webs blown out the team
performed much better against Te Awamutu.
A much better bowling effort saw Te Awamutu
all out for 73. Robbie was the best of the
bowlers, taking 3/17. The Melville batsmen
made hard work of a light run chase with the
Wilson brothers scoring the winning runs with
one wicket remaining. The anchor of the
innings was James, scoring a solid 37.
The first of the One Day games was against
St Peter’s 2 nd XI at home. Batting first, Melville
managed 110 runs, which looked to be a few
short in the conditions. Once again James
starred with the bat, making 35. Tight line and
length bowling had St Peter’s under pressure
straight away and they lost wickets regularly to
be all out for 39. The best of the Melville
bowlers was James, taking 4/14.
Water Polo
After finishing top of their division in Term 3,
the combined Melville/Fraser team has got
away to a good start this term, beating HBHS
8-0. Maui featured scoring 3 goals. The team
plays on Monday evenings at Waterworld
Te Rapa.
Volleyball
Matua Ted has brought together a group of
keen boys to compete in the Junior Boys’
Volleyball competition. After four games the
boys have won 2 and lost 2, narrowly losing to
the top team, Matamata in the last game. The
team is ably led by Atunaisa.
Touch
Miss Hill has a squad of 10 Junior Girls
competing in the Secondary schools Touch
Competition on Wednesdays. After two games
the girls have had a win and a loss. With
regular trainings they are showing huge
improvement and coming together well as a
team.
Basketball
After qualifying 3 rd at the Regional Basketball
Championships in Manukau recently, the Boys’
Senior Basketball team travelled to Palmerston
North to compete in the National Secondary
Schools Championships. This is the first time a
team from Melville High School has competed in
this event. Competing with the top 24 teams in
New Zealand was a great challenge for the
players, coaches and supporters.
Supportive team play during the preliminary
rounds saw the boys playing off against Hamilton
Boys’ High School for 11 th and 12 th placings. This
tightly fought local derby saw Melville winning 96-
79. This placed the boys in the top half of the
tournament and ahead of a number of larger “all
boys” schools from around the country.
The successful team were: Ethan (Captain),
Izael, Ezrym, Jershon, Helaman, Brigham,
Riley, Brandon, Isaac, Jared and Haimona.
Head Coach was Mr Phillip Smiler, assisted by
Mr Paurini and Mr Warren. Team Manager was Mr
Kutia.
Special thanks go to the large number of whanau
and supporters that travelled with the team.
Izael travelled to New Caledonia last week after
being selected in the New Zealand Under 17
team. This is great reward for a player who has
put in a tremendous amount of effort and follows
Ethan’s selection in the Tournament team after
the Under 17 National Championships.
Congratulations boys – a fine effort!
HAMILTON HALF MARATHON
It seemed like a good idea at the time! The Year
12 Institute of Sport class needed an event to
focus and train towards. Running 21.1km in a
race with 1200 other people for the first time, we
saw it as a realistic goal to get fit in the seven
weeks prior to the race. Once students had
invested in a decent pair of running shoes, hitting
the pavements before and after school became a
priority.
8
In the end, four students, Sam, Gina, Robbie
and Andrew and myself, made it to the start line
on Sunday 27 September during the first week of
the Term 3 holidays. This was a great event for
the students to compete in because it tied in a lot
of the theoretical components that were covered
in class over the past year: goal setting, nutrition,
physical fitness, psychology and recovery.
Once the race started, competitive instincts kick
in. No turning back! You want to do your best.
The course started at Flagstaff, running south to
Victoria Bridge on the east side of the river, and
then running back north on the west side of the
river, back to Flagstaff.
Completing the Hamilton Half Marathon with a
group of my students was a very satisfying thing
for us to all compete in together, one of the
highlights in my journey so far as a teacher.
Crossing that finish line was such a massive
was so awesome.
Waikato’s Top Volunteer Coaches
Recognised
At a special ceremony recently held in Hamilton
by SPARC, volunteer coach awards were
presented to acknowledge and reward the
outstanding efforts of coaches who give up their
time to help make sport happen. There were
nearly 1000 nominations for these prestigious
Waikato awards There were three categories:
Student, Lifetime and General. Melville High
Teacher Aide, Valetta Wiperi won the Lifetime
Category (25 years or more service to their sport)
for her services to Netball. Valetta wins a
scholarship provided by WILSS to complete the
National Certificate in Sport (Coaching) and a
supply of Wattie’s products.
Year 12 student, Opal-Rose was a finalist
nomination for the Student Category for services
to netball.
L to R: Andrew Thorrold, Mr Edwards,
ex-MHS student Andy Webb, Robert Smith,
Samantha Jeffrey and Gina Milicich
Andrew was the first of our group to finish in a
time of 1 hour 33 minutes, a fine effort. I wasn’t
too far behind, providing me with the motivation
to train a little harder next time to be able to keep
up with him. I am proud of the effort that was put
in on the day by all the students. Our bodies
were sore for the following few days but it was all
worth it.
Several Year 9 and Year 10 students are
currently training towards the Hamilton Round
the Bridges running race. I wish them all the best
for their race on Sunday 21 November.
SPORTS AND CULTURAL PRIZEGIVING
A great night of celebration was held at this year’s Sports and Cultural Prizegiving. Former Silver Fern,
Rhonda Wilcox was this year’s guest speaker. Rhonda, daughter of All Black legend, Sir Colin Meads, is
also a parent of the school and has been very involved in all areas of netball including playing, coaching
and as an administrator. Rhonda described her experiences and successes as a netballer representing
New Zealand. She encouraged students to make the most of their sporting opportunities while they were
at school. She also noted that once students have left school it is much more difficult for them to manage
their responsibilities and to be successful sportspeople.
Master of Ceremonies, Russell Wilson managed the evening well. Our combined Mangakotukutuku/
Marawaatea kapa haka group extended a welcome to everyone and laid a positive platform for an
exciting evening. A host of teaching and support staff worked hard behind the scene. It was truly a
collective effort to honour the successes of our students. The evening culminated in a light supper and
the opportunity to view the visual art display of senior students’ work in the Music Suite.
