Peter W. Davis, Class of 1973
A Leader for Life
Pete Davis, a successful banker for almost
30 years, graduated from Biscayne College with
a bachelor’s in history in 1973. For the past eight
years he has been with Amboy Bank in Old
Bridge, NJ, a $2.7 billion organization where he
is Sr. Vice President, Sr. Lending Officer and
member of the board of directors.
His memories of his years at Biscayne
College are still vivid. The facilities may have
been meager by today’s standards, just Kennedy
Hall, the cafeteria and two dormitories, but he
declares the education he received and the friendships
he made, and maintains to this day, have
led to a rewarding career and a full life.
St. Thomas University’s new tagline,
“Developing Leaders for Life,” was as true then
as it is today, he said.
He chose Biscayne College, as the
University was then called, because he was following
in the footsteps of his cousin and a class-
mate at his New
Jersey high school
who were already
here.
In 1969, the
year he arrived and
the first year jackets
and ties were not
required in class,
Biscayne was an
all-male and primarily
residential college,
with the
majority of the students
from Catholic Pete Davis
high schools in the northeast.
All far from home, they made their own entertainment:
intramural sports, especially basketball;
parties over at the all-female Barry College; and, of
Summer 2007
continued from Page 1
Ratskeller, where Pete was its first manager. He remembers convincing
his mentor, Professor Jim Maney, to hold Friday afternoon
history classes at “The Rat” that usually continued into the
evening as other students and professors wandered in. He also
recalls French professor Madame Vargas’ fascinating accounts
of her activities in the French resistance during World War II,
and of her husband’s anti-Castro activities in Cuba.
After graduation Davis taught history and English at nearby
St. Monica’s Catholic School in Opa-Locka for two years,
but then returned to New Jersey. The youngest in a family of ten,
he says he realized he was missing out on family gatherings.
Back home, he started his banking career and continued his
studies, graduating with an MBA from the University of
Delaware, where his son James, 22, is currently pursuing his
bachelor’s degree.
Davis is a strong supporter of STU. He was invited to join
the university’s Board of Trustees in 2005 and as President of
the New Jersey alumni chapter, he has been key to the organization
of the chapter and the success of its activities. The third
annual day at the races at Monmouth Park is scheduled for
August 25.
A basketball player during his college years, he is chairing
the Booster Club for the newly revived basketball teams.
Fundraising events for the teams were held in New Jersey and
Ft. Lauderdale. For his efforts in this arena, he received the
ESPY award, presented to him during the NAIA Baseball
Regional finals held on the STU campus this year. The ESPY
Pete Davis receiving the ESPY award from STU Director of Athletics
Laura Courtley-Todd and Msgr. Franklyn Casale.
award is named after the late Frank Esposito, a trustee of the
University. The first basketball game will be this fall and the
University is working towards gaining entrance into the NCAA
Division II.
In addition, Davis is a leader in the New Jersey communities
where he lives and works. He is a director of the Jersey Shore
region of the American Cancer Society, Past Vice President of
Old Bridge Economics Development Corporation, and Past
President of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Union County, an
Irish organization that raises funds for the local Hospice and for
college scholarships for children of Irish heritage.
Villanova Hall, the first new residence hall built on campus
since the early 1960’s, was dedicated in February by the
Archbishop of Miami, John C. Favalora.
The four-story building accommodates 100 students in a
variety of individual rooms and suites. It includes 14 fourperson
suites, with two-bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and
bathroom, for undergraduate students. In addition there are 44
private suites for law and graduate students. All suites include
cable TV, telephone and Internet connection.
A beautifully landscaped courtyard surrounds the building
and a special meditation courtyard was dedicated to the memory
of the late Frank R. Esposito, a longtime member of the
University’s Board of Trustees.

Bobcat Baseball Success
STU played host to the 2007 NAIA Region XIV baseball tournament
May 8 -11.
The Bobcats earned the right to host the four-team tournament
by finishing first in the Florida Sun Conference with an 18-2 conference
record and 41-12-1 overall record. They then won their regional
tournament and earned an at-large bid to the NAIA World Series
in Lewiston, Idaho.
In Idaho, the No. 7 seed Bobcats were upset in the opening
game by No. 10 seed Walsh University, and then eliminated by No.
6 seed Lee University. But Junior outfielder Angel Hernandez and
Junior catcher Hamzeld Diaz were both named to the 2007 NAIA
All-America Second Team for their exceptional efforts during the
season.
Congratulations to head coach Manny Mantrana on a successful
11th season as head coach of the Bobcats.
Online Auction A Huge Success
“Bid for the Future,” St. Thomas University’s first
online auction, raised over $85,000 for student scholarships.
The Auction Website had more than 300,000 hits. It was a
great opportunity for alumni throughout the country to participate
in a fundraising event and reconnect with their alma
Cruise Line; a luxury golf get-a-away at the Biltmore Hotel;
and box seats to the Ericsson-Sony Men’s Tennis Finals.
surprised his two young sons with opening day tickets to the
Florida Marlins and another gave his wife a 35th anniversary
present of the “Bobcat’s Women’s Basketball Honorary
Coach” for their first game.
We are grateful to our many auction package donors.
They helped us in raising critical funds for the University
First Graduates of 2+2 Nursing
Program
Enrollment Services, including the Departments of Admissions,
Financial Aid, B.A.S.I.C. Office and the Office of the Dean of
Enrollment, have raised more than $600 to help students with the
cost of their textbooks. Each department was given a container with
the goal to collect as many pennies as possible during the competition,
which ran from April 23 until June 1. The department that
raised the most money was treated to breakfast by the department
that raised the least. A big thank-you to all the staff in Enrollment
Services for their generosity and for coming up with such a great
idea.
