GDLSEA
EA President’s Message
2008 is under way with the Employee Association continuing
to provide its over 1,300 members with a wide range
of social events, professional/personal development seminars,
and community activities. We had our Annual Installation
Dinner Meeting featuring a marine hero guest speaker
from a unit we sponsored under the Adopt-a-Unit program.
Our “members only” social events included the Great Lakes
Mall Shopping Day and Splash Party at the Sterling Inn.
Community activities included Oakland County Special
Olympics Track & Field competition, Gleaners Food Fight
for the hungry, coordinating walkers for Cystic Fibrosis
Walk, Adopt-A-Unit raffles, and entertainment book sales
for Make-a-Wish Foundation. Professional and Personal
Development provided timely seminars on Tax Planning,
Estate Planning, Stock Market Validity, as well as semiannual
continuing education fairs. Last but not least, Youth
Activities conducted the annual Youth Scholarship Essay
Writing Contest providing scholarships to member sophomores,
juniors, and seniors. Congratulations to the 2008
scholarship winners. The year is not over, there are many
more events scheduled for the rest of 2008.
I am amazed at the number of volunteers who help make
Employee Association events possible and professional. We
have a great Board of Directors representing the GDLS facilities
and Vice Presidents who give their time and talents to
“make it happen.” In addition to the elected officers, I am
especially proud of those who are not on the board. Volunteers
like Carolyn Beyer who lead the Gleaners Food Bank
effort and Diane Maluzhinsky who coordinated volunteers
for two Bowl for the Cure bowling fundraiser events as
well as Mark Jackson, Kurt Alexander, Georgiana Golematis,
Jack Abbate, and Joe Piva who coordinated volunteers
for the Cystic Fibrosis Walk. I would like to thank everyone
who volunteers for EA.
Do you have ideas on how we can step it up and make
our programs and events better? The Employee Association
is always looking for ideas for program and events,
especially “members only” events. We have a great Board
but want to hear from you. Please see a facility Director
with suggestions for making the Employee Association even
better in 2008. The list of EA Officers can be found on the
GDLS Portal under Employee Association.
EA Membership Drive
Would you like to do more charity work? If organizations
such as Special Olympics, Make-A-Wish,
Habitat for Humanity sound like organizations
you would like to help out and have fun doing so, then join
the GDLS Employee Association (EA). You will have a
good time with other volunteers while helping those less
fortunate. Become a part of a dynamic group of people and
enjoy the ability to participate in a variety of EA Community
Activities.
Do you want to increase your knowledge about such
things as financial and travel planning, trusts, taxes, and
education fairs but don’t have a lot of time to attend
day long seminars? The EA Professional Development
schedules short, after-work sessions to give you up-to-date
information in those areas.
If you are looking for something to do while having lots
of fun, such as ski trips, bus getaways, and golf outings the
EA Programs area sponsors these events along with many
other activities. Dinner meetings are also offered to our
members, which include a social hour, dinner, and a guest
speaker for the evening. These dinners give our EA members
a chance to socialize in a relaxed atmosphere with coworkers
and senior management and have the opportunity
to listen to interesting speakers on topics that are work and
non-work related, comic in nature, or for the sports enthusiast.
Do you have children in high school who are planning
to attend college? The EA Youth Activities area can help in
the funding of that college education if your child chooses to
participate in the annual Scholarship Contest.
There is also the opportunity to put your skills to practice
and be part of the GDLSEA Board of Directors. The Board
is responsible for planning various activities throughout the
calendar year. Elections are held every year, so become a
member today.
Do you want to meet new people outside your immediate
work space, talk to interesting individuals who share
common interests? Then join the Employee Association
today. It is easy to do. You can simply call one of the EA
Directors located on the EA Portal home page to receive your
Authorization card. Upon filling the card out and returning it
to your EA Director, just $1 per week will be automatically
deducted from your paycheck, for a total of $48 per year.
GDLS is about more than just your work life. The company
subsidizes EA activities because it believes everyone
needs a balanced lifestyle. That is why the Employee Association
offers a wide variety of activities. As part of the GDLS
family, the EA also organizes the GDLS’ Annual Family
Picnic, Adult Holiday Party, and Breakfast with Santa, which
are open to all employees. Browse through the EA website
and read our newsletter Landlines to see what we have been
2008 INSTALLATION
DINNER MEETING
The 2008 GDLSEA Installation Dinner Meeting
was conducted February 21st at the Sterling
Inn. We were honored to have our company
President, Mr. Dave Heebner, in attendance. We said
thank-you to those Board Members that ended their
terms in 2007, and welcome aboard to the new Board
Members for the 2008-09 term. Recognition Awards
were given to the outgoing Board: Gary Hermsen, Ed
Wojnecka and James Heibeck were presented with
a EA recognition award. Gary for his 7 years as
the volunteer Editor of the GDLSEA LandLines
newsletter, and James for his many years as Vice
President of Finance. We also welcome Meg
Francis who has replaced Gary as Editor of the Landlines
newsletter.
The Board Members installed for the new termwere:
Roybn Kelly, Meg Francis, Mary Junga,
Mark Gurchiek, Connie Beckett, Allen Fitzpatrick,
Lynn Powell, John Mitropetros and Amber Manny.
The highlight of the evening though was our guest
speaker, Captain Tim Doran, USMC. Captain Doran
was the Commander of our adopted unit in Iraq, Bravo
Company, 2d Tank Battalion, 2d Marine Division.
The unit was equipped with the M1A1 Abrams
and their area of operation was in Fallujah from April
- November 2007. It was very rewarding to hear
from Captain Doran how well the Abrams performed
and how highly his men thought of the vehicle and
how much the insurgents feared the Abrams. Captain
Doran emphasized that the work being done by
all members of Team Abrams was making a real difference
and saving lives everyday!
Captain Doran presented GDLS with an American
Flag flown over the unit headquarters in Iraq and
unit memorabilia as a token of the unit’s appreciation
for our support through the Adopt-A-Unit project.
NOTE: The flag and memorabilia have been placed
in the GDLSEA Display Case outside of the SHC
Cafetorium.
Great Lakes Mall Shopping
Over 120 GDLSEA members attended shopping
day at Great Lakes Mall in Auburn Hills, MI.
The event was organized by Jr. Director, Dee Myslakowski,
from ED&D. Each member who attended
received a Great Lakes Mall shopping bag along with
a coupon book for over 70 discount shops and eateries.
There were many different things to do; some of the
members children had their hair done with hair pieces
and crystal jewelry imported from Paris and France.
Some spent the day shopping from store to store
checking out Great Lakes Mall, some for the first time
while others ended up at an eatery. The mall has over
14 different types of food vendors. Member’s younger
children were able to ride the carousel or crawl around
the play center. By the end of the day, it was time to
just relax, check out all the great buys and have a nice
cool refreshing drink! Ten lucky winners received a
$20 credit to help defray the cost of shopping!
Splash Party at Sterling Inn
The first GDLSEA Annual Splash Party took place
on Sunday, April 13th with over 80 family members
attending the occasion. There was a lazy
river ride, splash slide, water falls and more to keep
everyone happy. There is a special section for the
small toddlers and a huge hot tub for adults. Upstairs
you could walk the trail that let you look over the
complete pool area, or spend a few pennies in the
penny arcade. If you got hungry, the snack shop had
hot pizza along with refreshments and cotton candy.
Each child or teen received either a beachball, blow
up fish, seahorse, or guitar to take home after the event.
The party ran from 1 to 5 p.m. and a lot of families
just didn’t want to leave. See you next year!
Windsor Day Bus Trip
The day trip started off with a bus ride from the
Meijer’s parking lot, located at 16 mile and Van
Dyke, for a small fee of $6. The bus was full with
55 GDLSEA members and guests taking advantage of
the day-trip to Windsor. Some went to the Casino,
where they received a $15 credit voucher to spend
on lunch. Others went shopping in downtown Windsor,
while others just spent the time with their friends
catching up on old times. Free coffee mugs were given
out to each rider by Diversity Counsel representative,
Jeanne Schabath, on the way to Windsor. Gift certificates
to various local establishments were given to
the members through a drawing on the way back on
the bus.
Some members bragged about their winnings at
the Casino, while others showed their great
shopping finds.
Community
Activities
On April 11th, 64 members and friends came
together at Sunnybrook Banquet Center to test
their Euchre skills with a different partner for
each of 10 games. The third annual GDLSEA Euchre
night saw quite an increase in players over the 2007
crowd. There were many familiar faces from the previous
years, as well as new participants. It was a well
organized event managed by Melanie Izokovic of the
Support Service group of PD&S. There were door
prizes throughout the night, such as gas cards and gift
certificates to local stores and restaurants.
Partners for each game were decided by the draw
of a poker chip and each player moved about 16 tables
after the completion of each game. There were various
levels of the knowledge of the game but the
night seemed to move at a good pace. At the end
of the night, Melanie’s crew (Ron Droste and Mary
Junga) tallied each person’s ten scores to determine the
winners and the person with the lowest score, who
was given a token hat to remember the special night!
What a day it was! The weather was a little
dreary; however, the spirits of the athletes
of the Special Olympics of Oakland County
were beaming. A group of seven volunteered to help
out with the 50 meter and 100 meter dash. The enthusiasm
of the athletes was astounding. Some of these
athletes were 60 and 70 years old. Our volunteers were
amazed at the energy all athletes had. Prior to breaking
for lunch, the coordinator (+50 something) decided
that the volunteers should attempt to race each other
in the 100 meter. As the participants lined up; three
young girls from the west side of town, a 20 something
young man and yours truly. Runners take your mark,
get ready, set and go. From the moment the whistle
was blown, yours truly was in the lead up until the 50
meter mark. I did not win, however, I had an excuse. I
was running with three pound workboots. I could not
get the feet moving fast enough.
The next meet was the Macomb County Special
Olympics. It always is a blessing to have a day with
sunshine just like the sunny smiles of the athletes. Once
again, this year’s 13 volunteers helped out with Bocce
Ball competition. Everyone enjoyed the time spent with
all of the athletes.
If you were unable to help this year, I strongly
encourage you to consider helping out with these
events in the future. I would also like to thank all of
this year’s volunteers and hope that the events were a
blessing to all of you.
50/50 tickets were sold by Duck Kelly, Robyn’s husband,
throughout the night with the charity selection
being the winner’s choice. Joe Verbic was the winner,
as well as the American Cancer Society, that will be
receiving $285. Thanks to all that participated.
The food fare was excellent with enough hors
d’oeuvres and desserts to make a meal. For anyone
interested in setting up a party, Sunnybrook has a
nice room and the food is very good and the price is
reasonable.
At the end of the night, many repeated the sentiments
of those last year - we need to do this more than
one time a year! Great job to Melanie and her crew!
Financial Education
Seminars
Personal & Professional Development kicked off
its 2008 season by hosting a series of financial
planning seminars. All three seminars were well
attended, and the GDLSEA members received some
valuable information. Thomas E. Smith, Jr. from Ameriprise
Financial Services located in Troy, Michigan,
began the series on January 24, 2008 by discussing “The
Retirement Income You Want: Plan For It Today.”
The series continued with Kristen R. Gross of Shea
Law Firm located in Southfield, Michigan. She conducted
an excellent seminar entitled “Estate Planning
101: Protect Your Family and Yourself with the Proper
Estate Plan” on February 13th. Kristen addressed such
topics as: When should you consider having a Will or
Trust? What is Probate? and What Happens If I Do Not
Create an Estate Plan?
Bill Thomas of The Hantz Group located in Shelby
Township, Michigan, concluded the series with “Tax
Planning Basics” on March 5th. He discussed Distributions,
Traditional IRAs vs. Roth IRAs, Tax Credits/
Deferrals and Marginal Tax Brackets.
These seminars were FREE and open to GDLSEA
members only and their spouses.
50th Wedding Anniversary
At a weekly husband’s marriage seminar, the Priest
asked Luigi, who was approaching his 50th wedding
anniversary, to take a few minutes and share
some insight into how he had managed to stay married to the
same woman all these years.
Luigi replied to the assembled husbands, ‘Well, I’ve
tried to treat her nice, spend the money on her, but best of all
is that I took her to Italy for our 20th anniversary!’
The Priest responded, ‘Luigi, you are an amazing inspiration
to all the husbands here! Please tell us what you are
planning for your wife for your 50th anniversary.’
Luigi proudly replied, ‘I’ma gonna go and get her.’
Best Caddy Comebacks.
Golfer: Think I’m going to drown myself in the lake.
Caddy: Think you can keep your head down that long?
Golfer: I’d move heaven and earth to break 100 on this
course.
Caddy: Try heaven, you’ve already moved most of the
earth.
Golfer: Do you think my game is improving?
Caddy: Yes sir, you miss the ball much closer now.
Golfer: Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?
Caddy: Eventually.
Golfer: Please stop checking your watch all the time. It’s
too much of a distraction.
Caddy: It’s not a watch - it’s a compass.
Golfer: Do you think it’s a sin to play on Sunday?
Caddy: The way you play, sir, it’s a sin on any day.
Golfer: This is the worst course I’ve ever played on.
Caddy: This isn’t the golf course. We left that an hour ago.
