In recognition of the dedicated and valuable service of its member of any<br />

class who has served the Institution with distinctive achievements, <strong>The</strong> <strong>Hong</strong><br />

<strong>Kong</strong> Institution of Engineers (HKIE) launched the President’s Award in 1994.<br />

This year, Ir Professor Ko Jan-ming receives the honour of the President’s<br />

Award, who is the 2nd awardee in the past 12 years.<br />

As the Vice President for Research Development and Chair Professor of<br />

Structural Engineering of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> <strong>Polytechnic</strong> <strong>University</strong>, and former<br />

Dean of the Faculty of Construction & Land Use, Ir Professor Ko has devoted<br />

his efforts to tertiary education in general and engineering education in<br />

particular in the past three decades.<br />

Ir Professor Ko is internationally recognised in the research area of Structural<br />

Health Monitoring. He is currently the President of the Asian-Pacific Network<br />

of Centers for Earthquake Engineering Research. Meanwhile, Ir Professor<br />

Ko has served the HKIE in many capacities and has significant contributions<br />

to the Institution. He was the Chairman of HKIE Accreditation Board from<br />

2001 to <strong>2006</strong> and of the Structural Division in the 1997/98 Session. He<br />

was the Chairman of the Structural Discipline Advisory Panel from 2000 to<br />

2001 and of the Education and Examination Committee from 1996 to 2001.<br />

He has represented the HKIE in the Federation of Engineering Institutions<br />

of Southeast Asia and the Pacific on the Engineering Education and Training<br />

Committee. He was also Chairman of the Organising Committee of several<br />

major conferences.<br />

Ir Professor Ko has been actively serving the local community. He is a<br />

governing council member of Construction Industry Institute, <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong><br />

and a council member of the <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> Institution of Science. He was the<br />

President of the <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> Society of <strong>The</strong>oretical and Applied Mechanics<br />

and the President of the <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> Association for the Advancement of<br />

Science and Technology.<br />
