Armstrong Ceiling Systems
LEED Credit Summary
LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationallyrecognised
green building certification system. Developed by the U.S Green
Building Council, LEED provides building owners and operators with a framework
for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design,
construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
LEED promotes sustainable building and development practices through a suite
of rating systems that recognise projects that implement strategies for better
environmental and health performance.
LEED uses a straightforward scoring system (credits) which are supported by
evidence-based science and research.
The following LEED credit summary has been developed by Armstrong Ceiling
Systems to support the design, specification and installation of Armstrong
suspended ceiling systems in a wide range of buildings.
Supporting evidence is contained in Appendix 1, Armstrong Products –
Environmental Performance Table and Appendix 2, Armstrong Products –
Absorption Attenuation Comparison Table. These appendices cover the full range
of Armstrong suspended ceiling systems.
Reflectance Ceilings: Brinjac
Engineering 2006
Intent: Achieve increasing levels of
energy performance above the baseline
standard to reduce environmental and
economic impacts associated with
excessive energy use.
How Armstrong can help:
Armstrong range of mineral fibre and
metal ceiling tiles achieve high levels of
light reflectance. High light reflectance
ceilings enhance indirect lighting by
improving overall lighting uniformity
returning up to 90% of the light back
into the space, compared with 75% with
standard ceilings*. A light reflectance of
90% and more allows 20% cost savings
with indirect lighting, and can yield total
building energy savings of up to 11%.
Canopies installed in the work place can
improve the light reflection over a working
space and provide better comfort for the
end user.
The TechZone Ceiling System combines
high light reflectance ceilings with indirect
lighting and can contribute to EA Credit 1.
recycled
Intent: To divert construction and
demolition debris from disposal in landfills
and incineration facilities. Redirect
recyclable recovered resources back to
the manufacturing process and reusable
materials to appropriate sites.
How Armstrong can help:
Armstrong provide a comprehensive
post-consumer mineral fibre ceiling tile
take-back scheme in the UK and France.
We offer a programme for refurbishment/
strip out projects to recover ceiling tiles
at the end of their life. And, we offer an
Off-Cut recycling programme that diverts
waste during the installation process from
going to landfill.
The ceiling tiles are 100% recycled into
the mix and are processed into new
ceiling tiles.
Full details of the take back scheme
are available at
MATERIAL AND RESOURCES
Intent: To increase demand for building
products that incorporate recycled
content materials, thereby reducing
impacts resulting from extraction and
processing of virgin materials.
How Armstrong can help:
A significant proportion of our ceiling
tiles are produced using recycled raw
materials, including slag mineral wool,
other recycled mineral wools, recycled
paper and recycled ceiling tiles. These
recycled contents, typically between 30%
and 60%, are indicated on all Armstrong’s
published literature in accordance with
EN ISO 14021: 2001.
Appendix 1, Armstrong Products
Environmental Performance Table
includes the recycled content for our full
product range.
QUALITY PLAN
(During construction
and before
occupancy)
LEED for Schools
Intent: To reduce indoor air quality (IAQ)
problems resulting from construction or
renovation and promote the comfort and
well-being of construction workers and
building occupants.
How Armstrong can help:
All Armstrong ceiling tiles have low or
zero VOC emission levels.
Appendix 1, Armstrong Products
Environmental Performance Table
provides the results of the tests for each
tile.
INDOOR ENVIRONMENT QUALITY
Intent: To reduce the quantity of indoor
air contaminants that are odorous,
irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and
well-being of installers and occupants.
How Armstrong can help:
All Armstrong ceiling tiles have low or
zero VOC emission levels and therefore
can comply with an Indoor Air Quality
Management Plan which commits to
using low or zero VOC finishes.
All Armstrong tiles have either been
tested by a third party and comply with
the requirements of EN 13964:2004
unless they are exempt from testing
(e.g metal or wooden ceiling tiles).
Armstrong has achieved the M1
classification under the Finnish Emission
Classification of Building Materials
scheme.
Appendix 1, Armstrong Products
Environmental Performance Table provides
the results of the tests for each tile.
DAYLIGHT AND
VIEWS
LEED NC, Schools,
CS, CI
Intent: To provide the building occupants
with a connection between indoor spaces
and the outdoors through the introduction
of daylight and views into the regularly
occupied areas of the building occupied
areas of the building.
How Armstrong can help:
Armstrong high light reflectance ceilings
can aid in extending daylighting into the
space. A typical acoustical ceiling reflects
just 75% of the light striking the surface,
while a high light reflectance ceiling is
engineered to reflect up to 90% of the
light striking the surface.
Recent independent studies have shown
a 10 - 15% daylighting effectiveness
increase.
A separate study concluded that a high
light reflectance ceilings could achieve
the LEED credit with up to 12% less
glazing than with a standard ceiling with a
light reflection of 75%.
