<strong>Pierce</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Dillion</strong> <strong>back</strong> on top at Rodeo Austin

Carlee <strong>Pierce</strong> got a boost with a $8,794 victory at the 

$27,500-added Rodeo Austin, held March 9-21. She <strong>and</strong> her great 

horse Rare <strong>Dillion</strong>, won the finals with the fastest time of the rodeo 

en route to the average win. 

“I drew up in the second set at Austin,” said the two-time 

Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier from Stephenville, Texas. 

“I knew the times were going to get as faster as it went along. My 

time wasn’t as fast as I had hoped, but I still placed. I came <strong>back</strong> 

<strong>and</strong> had a really good run the second go. I knew at least that would 

stay pretty strong <strong>and</strong> place in the top five—which it did. We came 

home <strong>and</strong> relaxed a little bit before the short round. <strong>Dillion</strong> went in 

there <strong>and</strong> made a super-fast run.” 

<strong>Pierce</strong> wanted to thank the Rodeo Austin committee for all their 

hard work. 

“I really like Austin’s rodeo,” she said. “The committee is always 

really friendly <strong>and</strong> helpful. The parking is always really good. They 

don’t get upset if we pull up onto the grass <strong>and</strong> let our horses stay 

in their own pens. We don’t have to stall them if we don’t want to. I 

just really like Rodeo Austin. I look forward to it every year.” 

The Austin victory capped off a modest winter building run for 

<strong>Pierce</strong>. 

“I’ve had a good winter if you look at my money won, but it 

didn’t go as well as I had planned,” said <strong>Pierce</strong>, who is sponsored by 

Boyd Gaming, Stephenville Truck & Trailer, Formula 707, Relentless 

<strong>and</strong> Cactus, Outlaw Equine <strong>and</strong> Cowgirl Tuff. “<strong>Dillion</strong> had 

gotten stone bruised during Fort Worth, so he didn’t get to run the 

second round or Finals there, <strong>and</strong> he didn’t get to run at San Antone. 

I didn’t get to place or win like I did at those two rodeos last 

year, but I’ve won enough that I’m happy. I’m in the st<strong>and</strong>ings good 

early enough in the season that I should be alright.” 

<strong>Pierce</strong> also stayed busy with a new Western Store—Br<strong>and</strong>ed P in 

Stephenville—<strong>and</strong> her three children—Kale, 15, Makala, 13, <strong>and</strong> 

Jacy, 6—<strong>and</strong> their activities. 

“Whenever I’m home I feel like we’re really busy now,” she said. 

Makala has been following in her mother’s footsteps. She qualified 

for the Texas Wrangler Junior High Finals Rodeo. 

“She’s done really well,” said <strong>Pierce</strong>, who was more excited to talk 

about her daughter’s upcoming finals than her Rodeo Austin win. 

“It makes you proud when they go out there <strong>and</strong> do good. I was so 

excited. It tells me that she’s really dedicated <strong>and</strong> spends a lot time 

riding <strong>and</strong> learning.” 

<strong>Pierce</strong> even put her on her young A Streak Of Fling mare— 

Streakin Easy April—when Makala’s horse got hurt. 

“We were a little concerned doing that because they’re both

young,” she said. “She went out <strong>and</strong> won both rounds at her Finals. 

She had only been on her two other times, ever. We’re excited for 

State.” 

Between now <strong>and</strong> the State Finals, <strong>Pierce</strong> has the RAM National 

Circuit Finals in Oklahoma City <strong>and</strong> a host of rodeos. <strong>Pierce</strong> will 

split her time between the West Coast rodeos <strong>and</strong> Texas Spring 

rodeos. 

“I’m going to go to Log<strong>and</strong>ale <strong>and</strong> some of the bigger California 

rodeos,” she explained. “I’m not taking <strong>Dillion</strong> <strong>and</strong> am just taking 

a couple of young horse. I’ll fly <strong>back</strong> to Texas to ride <strong>Dillion</strong> at 

Corpus (Christi) <strong>and</strong> Lufkin. I’m in that made-for-TV deal, so I’ll fly 

<strong>back</strong> to Redding, Calif., for it. After that, we’ll just hit some Texas 

rodeos before we head out for the summer.” 

<strong>Pierce</strong> is dedicating herself to mastering her heard of talented 

horses that she has by hauling more of her young ones with her this 

year. However, <strong>Dillion</strong> will continue to be her top priority. 

“He’s not a very forgiving horse,” said <strong>Pierce</strong>. “You have to be in 

<strong>Dillion</strong>’s time zone. When we have had those bad runs, it’s usually 

something that I’ve done <strong>and</strong> I have to go correct myself. When 

he does hit barrels, it’s because I’m not where I need to be at that 

second.”

Jackson Hall Memorial Barrel Event 

This year marks the first year of the Jackson Hall Memorial Barrel 

Event. The event has $20,000 in Added Money <strong>and</strong> comes to 

the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, OK from April 4-7, 2013. 

The event will feature the a 4 Year Old Futurity, Open 5D Barrel 

Races, a 5 Yr Old Futurity, <strong>and</strong> Derby. 

The pre-entries closed for Open Classes on March 22nd, but late 

online or mail in entries will be accepted until March 27th. After 

March 27th, you can enter at the show with no late fee but it will be 

on a Cash Only basis. 

Everyone entered in the pre-entry receives a chance to win a $100 

gift card. The event will offer a variety of vendors <strong>and</strong> great shopping, 

concessions will be available, <strong>and</strong> the webcast will be live on 

www.visworks.com. 

The dress code will be long sleeve shirt, hat, boots <strong>and</strong> a Coggins 

will be required on all entered horses. 5% of the proceeds from 

this event will go to the American Lung Association. For more

Film Visits Silver Spur Productions 

This past weekend, part of the film crew of the upcoming film, 

Valley Inn, visited the Silver Spur barrel race produced by Jennifer 

& Richard Roberts <strong>and</strong> Ginger & Ray Johnson in Shawnee, OK 

shooting B-Roll for the upcoming production. 

The plot of the film, Valley Inn, includes a lead character who 

is a 17 year old barrel racer <strong>and</strong> comes from a barrel racing “Dynasty”.

New Rodeo Committees Website 

The Association of Rodeo Committees (ARC) has launched a 

new website (www.rodeocommittees.org) to keep its members <strong>and</strong> 

others in the rodeo industry better informed about the ARC’s initiatives. 

The ARC was organized in 1979 to ensure that rodeo committees 

<strong>and</strong> producers (who have substantial investment <strong>and</strong> financial risk 

in sponsorship of Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association-sanctioned 

rodeos) are provided an effective, influential, <strong>and</strong> independent 

voice in the management <strong>and</strong> evolution of the sport of professional 

rodeo. 

“ARC exists to help promote rodeo committees <strong>and</strong> their efforts, 

<strong>and</strong> this site serves that purpose,” said Gary Williams, ARC’s Chairman 

of the Board <strong>and</strong> also the committee chairman for La Fiesta 

de los Vaqueros in Tucson

Pay It Forward; with Jill Moody

Grey’s Anatomy fans correct me if I am wrong but I remember 

watching an episode where Meredith’s mother asks her, “How can 

you live like this?” to which Meredith replies, “Live like what? We’re 

all just living”. That dialog brings to mind a question that almost 

everyone asks when being introduced to someone, “Where are you 

from?” Is anyone really interested in the answer to that question or 

is it just a conversation starter? 

We politely exchange information about where we were born <strong>and</strong> 

raised, where we went to college, what we do for a living, if we are 

married, do we have children, etc. You know the drill. For me, most 

of those first few questions are ancient history <strong>and</strong> I can recite the 

answers in my sleep. Does anyone really care? 

My answer to the question of, “Where do you live?” intrigues 

people the most. I live where I am. I am living here; in the spot 

where I am breathing, sitting, st<strong>and</strong>ing, sleeping, or riding my horse. 

I live wherever in the world I happen to be at that moment. At this 

moment I am living in my camper parked in my friend’s <strong>back</strong>yard in 

Henderson, NV, complete with six horses penned outside my window 

<strong>and</strong> three dogs on my couch. Later this afternoon I hope to be 

living at the Boulder City Horseman’s Association arena riding those 

six horses. In the meantime, I will be living somewhere between 

here <strong>and</strong> there. 

I consider myself lucky to live where I am; to be able to pack up 

<strong>and</strong> live in one state over; to live horse<strong>back</strong> in the desert at sunrise 

<strong>and</strong> in the mountains at sunset; to live on my horse barrel racing at 

the rodeo in three different towns in one day (yes, you can actually 

do that!). Some people have called this kind of a lifestyle “living in 

the moment”. But, <strong>and</strong> there is always a “but”, the privilege of living 

in the moment also comes with its sacrifices. 

I have given up the American dream of 2.5 children <strong>and</strong> the 

white picket fence <strong>and</strong> while I might not have the responsibilities 

that require me to “live” in the same house, in the same city, day 

after day I still have to eat, feed my animals, pay my taxes, <strong>and</strong> take 

care of all of the baggage that comes with living. 

I am fortunate enough to have a huge support system of friends 

<strong>and</strong> family who have allowed me to live in my moment while 

sharing in their moment. I also share their yards, arenas, washing 

machines, mailboxes, pets, <strong>and</strong> kids. So, in the course of the next 

conversation when the subject turns to where you live, try being a 

little more imaginative <strong>and</strong> respond with something like; “I live here 

where my feet are planted <strong>and</strong> in a moment I will take a step <strong>and</strong> be 

living there.” See where the conversation goes after you blurt out 

that response! 

Jill Moody is a multiple NFR Qualifier, finishing #2 in 2010 WPRA 

NFR World St<strong>and</strong>ings. She is a 2-time NFR Avearage Champion & 

average Record Holder in 10 rounds at the NFR. Moody made 10 runs in 

138.26 earning over $133,000. 

Jill is a multiple futurity champion, Badl<strong>and</strong>s Circuit Champion <strong>and</strong> owns 

multiple amateur association finals championships in the Dakotas. Jill was 

also named the 2007 Female Athlete of the Year by the South Dakota Sports 

Writers Association.

A Notable Performance for Schuster at LA State Finals 

About Notable Bully: Notable Bully has always been a consistent 

one to watch for. As far <strong>back</strong> as I can remember, he was was 

trained <strong>and</strong> owned by Matt Boice <strong>and</strong> campaigned by Matt <strong>and</strong> 

Cody Bauserman. He was sold to several top owners over the years 

including Circle G in Ohio <strong>and</strong> Brad Wagner. Edwin bought him in 

2007, before we started dating <strong>and</strong> then I started riding him once 

we were a couple. I did buy him from Edwin in 2009. Cathy <strong>and</strong> 

Morgan Grant bought him from me later that year after Cathy had 

borrowed him from us for the Canadian NFR. Her horse was unable 

to go, <strong>and</strong> she picked Notable Bully up along the way. Never 

riding him, before she ran strong right there against a tough field 

that included Brittany Pozzi <strong>and</strong> Lindsay Sears. This past summer 

Morgan contacted me to let me know that they were going to sell 

him. I called everyone I knew advising them to buy him. No one 

seemed too interested. Someone even said, “If he is so great, why 

don’t you buy him <strong>back</strong>?!?!?!” Well, this past December at OKC 

(BFA in Oklahoma City, OK), Morgan, Edwin <strong>and</strong> I were sitting in 

the st<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Cathy went to the concession st<strong>and</strong>. In a few minutes, 

Edwin struck a deal with Morgan <strong>and</strong> the deal was done. Took 

less than a minute tops! It happened so fast!!!! Cathy walked <strong>back</strong> up 

<strong>and</strong> Morgan said, “Cathy I just sold your horse!” 

Notable Bully consistently drew checks with me just about everywhere 

we went when I owned him before <strong>and</strong> he picked up right

where we left off. Placing just about every single run entered, he 

started getting <strong>back</strong> to the top in February. Running the fastest time 

of the day Sunday at the LG Pro Classic in the youth with Regan 

Henning, then he won the first go of the Open in Unadilla with me 

<strong>and</strong> placed in the other two rounds. From there, he had a couple 

weeks off getting rested for Diamonds <strong>and</strong> Dirt, where we placed, 

getting a check in the 1D in one of the most elite open races of the 

year. From there we went to the this race, theLouisiana State NBHA 

Championships, <strong>and</strong> dominated the record number breaking field 

by almost a full 3 tenths both days. 

When Notable Bully has a good first barrel he WINS! When he 

doesn’t he places. That is the beauty of him. When he <strong>and</strong> I are a 

team, we are pretty consistent. I wasn’t so sure he would have such 

a good first barrel that second day. I was right, but for the wrong 

reason. No he did not have as good of a first barrel on the second 

day, IT WAS BETTER! And when he was into that turn, I said to 

myself.... OH YEAH! IT’S ON! WATCH OUT! When the clock 

stopped it was the fastest time by three tenths <strong>and</strong> he just put three 

tenths on his own time from the day before! 

BRR: You have several top horses, how do you prepare to ride each 

one in the way they need to be ridden? 

Schuster: I try to prepare each horse as its own. Fortunately for 

me, I have some exceptional mounts <strong>and</strong> with these kind of horses, 

you do your homework at home <strong>and</strong> at a race when you stay out of 

their way, your lessons at home payoff! 

BRR: This spring you are going to rodeos as well as the Open 4Ds. 

What differences are there <strong>and</strong> how do you prepare differently for 

each? 

Schuster: I am limiting my Open 4D’s this year <strong>and</strong> trying to focus 

more on rodeos. While there is a difference, I personally am green 

to most of the rodeos I will be going to. So, each run I really will 

have to be paying attention while actually in my run. I feel this 

will be beneficial for me as a rider, because I will really be “riding 

smarter” during a run. Learning how to place my horse <strong>and</strong> not 

over ride. Since most rodeo ground is less than ideal, I will have to 

really watch <strong>and</strong> not ask my horses as hard as I would in a 4d or 

open barrel race. I will be “riding smart”. I am loving it! It is going 

to make me a smarter <strong>and</strong> better rider. Any of us can go flying 

down the alley at a barrel race with good ground. It takes a different 

type of rider that can “ride smart” <strong>and</strong> win!

Steffes <strong>and</strong> Sky High Guy Reunite for a Shootout Championship

Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Nikki Steffes, Vale, S.D., 

reunited with Bill <strong>and</strong> Deb Myers Sky High Guy for a $5,000-victory 

at the Super Shootout, held March 23 at Rodeo Austin. 

The Shootout featured teams of four—a bare<strong>back</strong> rider, a saddle 

bronc rider, a bull rider <strong>and</strong> barrel racer—from the premier rodeos 

across the country. Steffes represented the Fort Worth Stock Show 

as last year’s champion barrel racer. She was competing against Sue 

Smith, Mary Walker, Brittany Pozzi, Lindsay Sears, Christy Loflin, 

R<strong>and</strong>a Kellogg, Sammi Bessert, Carlee <strong>Pierce</strong> <strong>and</strong> Angie Meadors. 

With Rodeo Austin being only Sky’s second rodeo, the gelding 

had settled in by the Super Shootout. 

“Houston was his first rodeo <strong>and</strong> Austin was his second,” said 

Steffes, who is sponsored by Bismarck Ranch, Wyoming Custom 

Tack Saddle Pads, Rock N Roll Cowgirl, DeTye Vet Supply, South 

Grove Tack, Nichols Equine, Inc., <strong>and</strong> American Hat Co. “Houston 

is an overwhelming place. There’s 75,000 people there, but they’re 

far away, <strong>and</strong> the barrels are in the middle (of the arena) away from 

the fences, it wasn’t as overwhelming as Austin, where the people 

are right there. The first round (at Austin) he went in there looking 

around but by the second round he was a little better <strong>and</strong> by the 

Shootout he was awesome. So, he’s h<strong>and</strong>led the transition to the 

rodeo scene really well.” 

Steffes first rode Sky, a 2004 gelding by Frenchmans Guy out of 

Fleeting Pie, by Pie In The Sky, as a 4-year-old futurity horse when 

he was still a stallion. Unfortunately, an illness had left Sky subfertile 

<strong>and</strong> after trying to st<strong>and</strong> him at stud the Myers chose to geld 

him. 

“It’s been five years since I’d ridden him but he still has that same 

feel,” said Steffes. “He’s just a neat horse. He’s such a good-minded 

horse. Nothing really bothers him; he just goes out there <strong>and</strong> does 

his job every time. He tries really hard. 

“I love everything about him. His personality is neat; he’s a very loving 

horse. He’s a kind horse <strong>and</strong> very willing to do anything for you. 

I mean, how many other horses could go to Houston <strong>and</strong> Austin 

<strong>and</strong> do what he’s done. I won almost $3,000 on him at Houston <strong>and</strong> 

$7,000 at the Shootout.” 

Steffes is quick to point out the generosity of others like Bill <strong>and</strong> 

Deb Myers, as well as, Bryon <strong>and</strong> Mary Walker for helping her turn 

around a dismal winter after losing her last year’s rides. 

“It’s been a long winter for me,” she said. “Thankfully, Mary <strong>and</strong> 

Bryon Walker encouraged me to come down here <strong>and</strong> bring my 

colts. Mary let me ride her awesome new horse, Tonka, at a few 

rodeos. I was about ready to pack up my stuff <strong>and</strong> go to dental 

school. Then Deb let me take Sky <strong>and</strong> picked my confidence up, so 

I’m very thankful to her.” 

Steffes future travel plans change from day to day. As for her longterm 

future, she has a tough decision to make—rodeo or go to 

dental school.

“They’d given me a two-year deferral <strong>and</strong> I haven’t taken another 

one this year,” she said. “They gave me the opportunity to go 

chase my dreams <strong>and</strong> I made the NFR, but I haven’t even asked for 

another because I need to make the decision—either go or don’t go. 

Be a dentist or be a barrel racer. 

“It’s a tough decision but I’m very thankful that I went to college 

<strong>and</strong> did what I did to have that as a <strong>back</strong>up.” 

Time will tell whether Steffes heads <strong>back</strong> to the NFR or goes on to 

be Dr. Steffes!

McDonald Dominates At Shamrock Showdown 

After a dominating performance last weekend at the Shamrock 

Showdown by Fame Fling N Bling <strong>and</strong> rider Sarah McDonald, the 

Barrel Racing Report caught up with her for a few questions. 

BRR: At this show, you won all 3 days, what qualities does Fame 

Fling N Bling possess that allows her to be that consistent? 

McDonald: Bling is consistent because she enjoys what she does 

<strong>and</strong> runs hard every time. She has a lot of speed which allows her 

to make a mistake <strong>and</strong> still win. 

BRR: How do you prepare her for a big race? 

McDonald: I exercise her at home but never on the barrels. At the 

shows I try not to get on her too early because she warms up really 

fast. I lope a couple of circles <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong> walk her. 

BRR: What are your future plans for her <strong>and</strong> yourself? 

McDonald: In the future I want to take care of her <strong>and</strong> keep her 

healthy. She means a lot to me <strong>and</strong> we are getting embryo babies 

out of her. Maybe we will try to run at some different places <strong>and</strong> 

maybe rodeos when I get done with the nursing program. She is 

only 6. 

BRR: What is different about Fame Fling N Bling than the other 

horses you have ridden before? 

McDonald: Bling is different from the other horses I have ran 

because she has such speed <strong>and</strong> has such a personality. It’s like 

she focuses <strong>and</strong> know when it is time for her to perform. She is a 

natural athlete. Her turning style is very unique, I have not had one 

before who could get down so low!

Headin’ For Home 

The Easter season is here. Keep in mind what Easter is really 

about <strong>and</strong> don’t get caught up in the world’s view of Easter 

as just a fun time, new clothes, big dinners, colored eggs 

<strong>and</strong> Easter baskets full of chocolate bunnies. The devil will try to 

distract you from the real meaning of Easter. 

Remember God sent His Son in the form of a God-man to live 

on earth for a time, suffer a cruel death <strong>and</strong> take punishment that 

mankind deserved. But, remember, He rose from the grave on the 

third day! Easter Sunday is actually Resurrection Sunday. 

Nowadays, we have all sorts of gadgets to help us find our way. 

But, the only GPS we need is Jesus Christ. GPS could st<strong>and</strong> for 

Gospel Plan of Salvation. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth <strong>and</strong> 

the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 

14:6) Don’t trust in yourself <strong>and</strong> a few good deeds to get you into 

Heaven when you die–<strong>and</strong> death will come to all of us. 

Turn to Jesus <strong>and</strong> trust in Him alone <strong>and</strong> the promises of God. 

Jesus came so we can have an abundant life now <strong>and</strong> a wonderful 

future in eternity. It tells us in Romans 10:9 that if we confess with
