Vision:<br />

We envision our community involved in supporting all parents,<br />

caregivers and children <strong>from</strong> pre-conception <strong>to</strong> age six <strong>to</strong> enhance their<br />

potential.<br />

Mission:<br />

The Early Childhood Development committee’s mission is <strong>to</strong> build<br />

community partnerships dedicated <strong>to</strong> healthy child development through<br />

strong communication, the coordinated delivery of a continuum of<br />

preventative and specific services in a timely manner, based on ongoing<br />

data collection and analysis.

appointment. Prenatal programs are accessed by individual clients or on a referral<br />

basis. Referrals are accepted <strong>from</strong> physicians, Ministry for <strong>Children</strong> and Families,<br />

or any other community agency or service. Postnatal visiting services extended <strong>to</strong><br />

all new moms and babes in the region <strong>to</strong> all persons of any age who are <strong>with</strong>in the<br />

Shuswap Healthiest Babies Possible<br />

This program offers nutritional counselling and outreach support for At-Risk pregnant<br />

women and new mothers in Salmon Arm, Sicamous, and Enderby. The program is based at<br />

the Shuswap Family Resource and Referral Centre in Salmon Arm. In Enderby and<br />

Sicamous the program runs <strong>from</strong> the health unit is these communities. Food vouchers,<br />

vitamin/mineral supplements, lunch at a weekly drop-in, practical cooking skills at a<br />

Community Kitchen Program are all part of the services provided. The staff includes<br />

Nutrition Coordina<strong>to</strong>r Caroline Huisken, and two nutrition outreach workers.<br />

This is a support and referral program dedicated <strong>to</strong> enhancing and promoting quality,<br />

availability and accessibility of childcare for children. Childcare providers receive support in<br />

the way of childcare information (i.e. safety, programming, nutrition), equipment and<br />

resources, training, newsletters and supportive visits. <strong>Parents</strong> receive referrals <strong>to</strong> childcare<br />

centres that match their needs for care, location and schedules. The program provides<br />

Kids Club is a licensed daycare for children ages 5 – 12 <strong>years</strong>. During the<br />

school year this program picks children up at school and brings them <strong>to</strong> the<br />

Boys and Girls Club Monday <strong>to</strong> Friday. The program provides a variety of<br />

activities including games, crafts, sports, science, music, theme days, and<br />

special events using indoor and outdoor facilities and field<br />

trips. The children are involved in program and meal planning.<br />

Kids Club becomes a splashing good time in the summer <strong>with</strong> an<br />

all day “Summer Splashes” program. <strong>Children</strong> arrive at 8:00 am<br />

ready for an action-packed day of beaches, water slides, hikes,<br />

CCBC Ski League is a program operated by the Sovereign<br />

Lake Nordic Club for children 3 <strong>to</strong> 13 <strong>years</strong> of age <strong>with</strong> the<br />

emphasis on fun, participation, skill development and safety.<br />

The objective of the program is <strong>to</strong> provide the opportunity for<br />

children <strong>to</strong> move though the sport at their ‘speed’ based on<br />

their ability, skills and interests.<br />

To accomplish this, the program is designed <strong>to</strong> help children develop excellent ski technique<br />

through the ‘Rabbit Badge Program’. Colourful badges are awarded for a series of technique<br />

The Family Support Worker<br />

The Family Support Worker works <strong>with</strong> families whose children may be exhibiting some<br />

initial sexual behaviour problems. The focus is <strong>to</strong> educate and support parents and others<br />

involved <strong>with</strong> the child <strong>to</strong> deal <strong>with</strong> these difficult issues. This program also provides<br />

education support and some initial counselling services <strong>to</strong> families and children dealing <strong>with</strong><br />

third Thursday of the month. The box includes approximately $20.00 worth of fruit and<br />

This service is designed <strong>to</strong> assist the public in finding the appropriate lawyer. Call the<br />

Lawyer Referral Service and explain briefly your situation and an opera<strong>to</strong>r will then provide<br />

you <strong>with</strong> the name and phone number of a lawyer. You arrange an appointment <strong>with</strong> that<br />

lawyer and mention that the Lawyer Referral Service referred you. The lawyer will give you<br />

up <strong>to</strong> a half hour interview for $10 (taxes included). The lawyer will tell you whether or not<br />

you have a legal problem. Then, if you and the lawyer agree, you may hire the lawyer <strong>to</strong><br />

help you at the normal fees. But, if you decide not <strong>to</strong> hire the lawyer and wish <strong>to</strong> consult<br />

someone else, or if you are satisfied that you don’t need any further help, it won’t cost you<br />

more than $10 for those first 30 minutes.<br />
