19 Current Challenges • Only short chain (< C20), non-branched hydrocarbons are economical feedstocks for fuel production. • Current oil extraction methods cause fatal damages to the cell growth of most, if not all, algae. • Lack of efficient and economical refinery methods for the isolation of the suitable fuel feedstocks from the “alphabet soup” of hydrocarbons from algae. • Current commercial catalysts (e.g. NaOMe) for biodiesel production cannot handle the impurities, such as free fatty acids and lipid phosphoric acids, of algae oil.
